THE TALON || SENIOR ISSUE 2021
TOP TRENDS OF OUR LIFETIMES
2003- Beyonce
2004- ipods
The year marking the births of most of our class is also the year that Beyonce’s solo career took off. Quite a great year, wasn’t it?
2007- iphone
2006- twitter
Apple launched their line of smartphones this year, not knowing that they were revolutionizing technology for the years to come.
Social media is part of the norm today, but 2006? Not so much. Twitter was one of the first large social media platforms, following MySpace a few years prior.
MARIAM HANNA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
2005- digital cameras You would not be able to enter a high school without seeing these in the hands of some students. Digital cameras were all the rage!
Before smartphones held digital music files, there were iPods, the most desired technological devices of the time.
2010- razor scooters
2009- silly bands 2008High school musical
In retrospect, I feel awful for my first grade teacher. I’m sure teaching 30 six year olds running around with shaped rubber bands was not the most enjoyable experience for her.
2012- mustaches
Reruns of the movie that gave us a false perception of how high school would look, in the best way, of course, were constantly being played on our televisions around this time.
2011- TAYLOR SWIFT Taylor went on an international tour this year for her second album, “Speak Now.” Little did we know that ten years later, half of us would be in love with her highness.
2015- the dress Okay, I know the dress is blue and black. But how can you see that? This viral photo still lives in my brain six years later.
2018BIRKENSTOCKS Not only are these sandals super comfy, but they also were a major trend just a few years ago. Actually, they kind of still are.
All I have to say about this most-desired toy of 2010 is that if you had one, I envied you.
One question: Why were mustaches, of all things, the trend? Just why?
2013- Youtube
2014Rainbow loom 2014! The year my sister and I spent hours (not an exaggeration) watcing tutorials on YouTube to make intricate bracelets.
Miranda Sings, Bethany Mota, Zoella- you name the YouTuber, most older Gen-Z-ers have probably heard of them (or spent their young adolescence obsessing over them).
2017- FJALLRAVEN BACKAPCK
2016- HARAMBE In 2016, a little boy climbed into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinati zoo and was dragged by Harambe. A zoo worker shot him to save the boy, and that is when “RIP Harambe” was trending on Twitter.
2019- HYDROFLASK According to the LA Times, Hydroflasks were popular amongst “VSCO girls,” young women who embrace a beachy, easygoing, 1990s-inspired aesthetic.” I just like that they keep my water cold, though.
These were on everyone’s backs- and I mean absolutely everyone. Who knew Sweden specializes in both choclate and backpacks?
2020- tiktok If you did not already have this app downloaded last January, you definitely downloaded it during quarantine. It really took over our phones and lives!
2021- masks I don’t think this one needs an explanation...

I WILL BE READY COLLIN KILPATRICK SPORTS EDITOR
The realization that my time at Rochester high school will be ending soon has been coming at me fast, and it is definitely a bittersweet feeling. High school has been the thing that I have hated to get up for every morning, but in a few weeks it will be what I miss most. My time at Rochester has taught me many things, but most importantly it has taught me to not take anything for granted, and always be prepared for what’s coming next. Coming to RHS as a freshman, I did not know the experiences I would get to have. I never knew how fun Friday night football games would be, or how cool the atmosphere was going to be at the pep assembly. I never knew that my favorite part of Rochester would be playing
on the sports teams, such as basketball, lacrosse, and cross country. I never truly realized how special these experiences were until they were taken away from me. When COVID hit, it was a complete shock that I wouldn’t be able to have those experiences that I’d had in previous years. Because these things were taken away, I learned that you can’t take your experiences for granted, and that you need to take full advantage of what you have, because you never know when it could be taken away from you. Throughout the pandemic, I’ve had to learn to adapt to online learning, and also learn a new in-person learning routine. I’ve had to learn to always know when you’re online or not, and always be ready for the learning to switch from online to in-person. This new style
of learning has taught me to plan ahead and be ready for whatever is thrown at you next. The same thing is true for sports, as games are getting cancelled, and new games scheduled all the time. This lesson of always being prepared is incredibly important, as it will help me look out for things that could possibly be ahead in my life, and allow me to better plan for the future. Putting these two lessons together, my time in high school has taught me to always live in the moment, but also be prepared for the future. These two lessons go together very well, as one is necessary for the other. You cannot live in the moment if you are constantly worried and unprepared for the future. Although the thought of leaving high school is scary, I know that because of the lessons I learned, I will be ready.
