Chantel Atkins (CEO/Owner) I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host.

The radio’s success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. I’m incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy!

The multi-instrumentalist, Ron Handy, was born and reared in Montgomery, Alabama. He began playing guitar in grade school. In junior and senior high school, Ron began to concentrate primarily on Alto Saxophone and he participated in various county and state honor bands. During high school, Ron not only played in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands, but he also arranged and composed music for these bands. This pivotal period in his life influenced Ron’s decision to pursue a career in music.

After high school graduation, Ron enrolled in college at Alabama State University, where he earned a music degree with honors. Presently, Ron is employed at Alabama State University in the Department of Music. Ron has been the recipient of the ASU President’s Excellence Award and he was inducted into the Lanier High School Hall of Fame (his high school alma mater) for creative musicianship and service to the community. He has also received numerous other awards for music and for community service.

A versatile musician with a love for different genres of music, Ron Handy has played gospel, classical, jazz and pop/R&B extensively. He has served as the musical director and/or woodwind/keyboard player for many theatrical productions including: “The Wiz”; “Dreamgirls”; “Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope”; “Purlie”; “Ain’t Misbehavin’; “The Meeting” and many others. Ron has been featured on both local and national television, along with local and international radio. He has been featured on CNN and he was the “Artist of the Week” on the international radio program “Jazz From The City,” hosted by renowned jazz DJ Ken “Spider” Webb. Ron Handy has produced and performed on numerous recordings over the years. He has worked as a studio musician and engineer, as well as producer and arranger for several recording projects, including television theme songs and commercial jingles. Ron has released his own CDs, which include smooth jazz “covers” of the R&B group Jodeci’s “Forever My Lady” and jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves’ “Come In.” He has also recorded smooth jazz versions of other pop/R&B hits, including Brian McKnight’s “The Only One For Me”.

Being a spiritual person who loves to give honor and praise to God, Ron released a CD of gospel favorites titled “Sign Me Up,” which has received heavy rotation and acclaim from radio stations and listeners alike. Gospel and “smooth jazz” stations also embraced a CD single titled “He’s Worthy”.

Despite maintaining a demanding professional career, Ron enjoys taking the time to visit schools and churches to perform and talk to young people about music, life and career goals.

Throughout the years, Ron has been blessed to perform for wide and diverse audiences. His versatility has allowed him to become one of the most sought after musicians in the southeast. Having been given the gift of music, Ron Handy thanks God and considers it a privilege and an honor to be able to share his music with others. !

The Rhythmic Lounge: Was there an "aha" moment that made you say, "I want to be a musician"?

Ron Handy: Coming from a musical household where everyone in the house played an instrument and/or sang definitely had an impact on me, but my “aha” moment came when I was in high school. I had a wonderful band director, Farrell Duncombe, who saw some potential in me and allowed me to go as far as I wanted to go under his guidance. I was the saxophone section leader and, as a teenager, was allowed to arrange musical selections and conduct them in rehearsals.

The fire within me was raging once I stood in front of the band for the first time to conduct my very first marching band arrangement (laughs). Honestly, it didn’t turn out that great but Mr. Duncombe encouraged me to keep at it. I was so determined to practice that Mr. Duncombe asked the school principal if I could have a key to the band room. I think he was tired of me “bugging” him (laughs). His request was granted and I was able to practice in the band room at any time. I loved it and my desire to be a good musician (along with being a responsible young man) was of “high priority.”

TRL: You play several instruments! How did that come about?

RH: Wow! That’s a good question! As I stated earlier, my family had instruments around the house all the time and it sparked my interest to see how each one operated. Several years ago I worked with John Gibbs, a fantastic musician who owns a music store here in Montgomery. Whenever I was in the store I would watch customers come in to purchase different instruments. To my surprise and amazement, John would demonstrate each instrument that was requested. I don’t mean “tinker” with it (smile). He could “really” play every instrument that he put his hands on…WELL (laughs). It was great for me to see a person do that and he was gracious enough to show me some techniques on different instruments. I was getting into multi-track recording at the time and I had to lay all of the tracks myself. Whew! During those days I didn’t have digital recorders to work with, so everything went to tape. It really helped my musicianship because I had to literally “perform” every part in its entirety. I continue to work like that now because I get a better feel for the music by actually “playing” the parts separately.”

TRL: Why was going to college and getting a degree in music important to you?

RH: First of all, both of my parents are retired educators and going to college was always stressed to me, along with my siblings, as a way to position ourselves for a better life. I was so into music in high school that my mind was made up about having music as a major. I really wanted to learn everything that I could about music and possibly teach one day. My saxophone instructor in college, Dr. Laurence Hayes, played a major role in convincing me to soak up all of the knowledge that I could from him. Believe me, he had a wealth of knowledge and I was encouraged to go beyond my musical barriers. The music was so difficult that I would spend 4 to 6 hours a day working on various exercises. I once asked, “Why are you giving me such difficult pieces to learn?” I soon found out that he was planning to retire and I am now in his old office at Alabama State University. Talk about irony (smile). Attending college and getting a degree in music has been extremely beneficial to me. I owe a major debt of gratitude to all of my former teachers for the seeds that they’ve sown in me. May God bless them all!

TRL: You've performed numerous times as a solo act. How challenging is that?

RH: That’s a great question! The solo act came about as the result of my maturing as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. I owe a lot of my decision to perform solo to Dr. George Shaw, a Long Beach, California based musician/producer/educator whom I met several years ago. He literally took me under his wing and instructed me on the “ins” and “outs” of studio recording. He’s a guru when it comes to studio gear and he’s an awesome trumpet player. Well, I had a performance coming up for a festival and was working so hard that I didn’t have time to pull a band together for rehearsals. I was about to cancel the engagement when Dr. Shaw says, “Do it yourself!” His statement changed everything for me and I began to perform with or without a band. I spent a great deal of time learning several tunes on a variety of instruments to enhance my “live” performances. Performing live with a band is wonderful and I enjoy that aspect tremendously. The challenge of performing “live” on a “track date” concert is that it requires a lot more energy. Since I’m performing the instrumental parts on the tracks, I always think about my energy level and which instrument(s) I will be playing “live” to keep things fresh and interesting. It’s truly a challenge, but I enjoy it!

TRL: Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio?

RH: Yes I do remember the first time I heard a selection that I’d recorded in the studio on the radio (laughs). Back in the day, I was always working on stuff (smile). A good friend of mine and music business mentor, Steve Myers, would always ask me… “Are you working on some material?” I would always say “yes” and he would tell me to get it to him as soon as I was done. After several months of asking the same question and getting the same answer from me, I reluctantly gave Steve a tape to check out over the weekend. I didn’t think it was ready, but he took it and returned it to me on the following Monday. He told me he liked it and I said “thanks, but I’ll finish it soon”. To my surprise, I was driving and listening to our campus radio station (WVAS FM 90.7) when I heard one of my selections on the radio. You see, Steve Myers was the station manager at the time and he’d copied the tape and put it on the air. I guess he was tired of “waiting on me” and decided I was ready (Laughs). As I think about it, I’m glad he did that. I would probably still be “getting ready” today (smile)! Thanks, Steve!

TRL: How did the interesting concept of the "Killing Me Softly" video on YouTube come about?

RH: The “Killing Me Softly” track and video came about very quickly. The vocalist that I work with, Christina Mims, has always loved that song and wanted to perform it. I laid the instrumental tracks for her to rehearse with. She liked it and went on the computer to make sure she had all of the lyrics correct. We were not really intending to “record” the song at that time. It was really just a “fun” thing. She looked over the lyrics for a few minutes and said…”Hey, I want to lay some vocal tracks over what you’ve done.” She proceeded to lay the lead and the harmony tracks in one take each… top to bottom. Wow! As we were listening back to the performance Darrick Long (an ASU student) walked into my office and said… “I really like that and I have an idea.” Darrick takes his iPhone out of his pocket and says…”let’s make a video”! The footage on the iPhone was shot right then. As we listened to the lyrics of this great Charles Fox – Norman Gimbel composition, Darrick (along with his twin brother Eric) had a concept to convey a unique message through the video. The world recently commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March and State Senator Quinton Ross played the video for visiting dignitaries during their visit to Montgomery. The video was met with a rousing ovation of approval and we are all very proud to have been a part of it. We’ve received many positive emails and texts from around the world from those who have viewed the video on YouTube! Christina (a gifted vocalist) and Darrick (who also designed my website) are truly talented individuals and I love working with them. Thank you, TRL!

She has over 9 years’ experience in the construction industry overseeing residential home improvement projects, she has completed numerous training and acquired certifications ranging from OSHA training to Construction Business Management. LaTarsha is a loving and devoted mother of six children and grandmother of four.

She’s been featured in Clayton County local newspaper and graced the front page of a local newspaper in Lubbock Texas. In Addition: she became a featured story on AOL Black Voices. She has appeared on The Debra Gatlin Show, The Ordinary People Show who are doing extraordinary things, and Joe the Gravedigger Show about helping others in the community who were facing difficult challenges.

She was presented with the award of “Women Who Inspire” at annual women conference hosted by WEOP in “2008” and was nominated for the Humanitarian Essential Piece Award in”2011” from Ga. Alliance to End Homelessness. She’s an inspiring speaker and she answered the call to preach the Word of God, after accepting her call into ministry in “2005”. She was ordained into the office of Pastor in February “2013”. She is a member of the Junior League of Atlanta, and she was also nominated to be included in the 2014 edition of Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

She is an emerging leader in the city of Atlanta. She has an A.A. degree in Biblical Education, a B.A degree in Leadership and Administration a MBA degree and now she is pursuing a Master’s of Divinity degree from Beulah Heights University as well. She is a newly published author of the book “I’m Free to Be Me”.

Michael Karr

Musician Michael Karr is one of those rare instances of humble musical genius. I spoke with Michael over the phone recently to talk with him about what inspired the music from his latest album entitled “Think It Over” on which he is the sole instrumentalist on all the cuts with one exception, the vocals sung by the late Izzy Rivera. A very warm and soft-spoken individual, it is through his music that Michael finds his best expression I believe. Inspired by his father a multi-instrumental musician who took him everywhere as a child and exposing him to various musical settings, he began his voyage through music at the tender age of eleven on his first recording dates with the Pittsburg Youth Symphony as a soloist. His ability and talent recognized by Trombonist Randy Purcell earned him a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University. After completing his education and receiving two Bachelors degrees by age 19, he began playing and touring nationally and in Europe.

Playing with a veritable who’s who of musical groups and artist, a list of which would go beyond the scope of this article, suffice it to say he has earned the respect of many great and talented musicians over the course of his career. Equally talented on both piano and trumpet, he is also an arranger, lyricist, composer, engineer, and producer. Having been signed to various labels during his career and producing a top ten hit on Billboards R&B charts with Stanley Fields cover of “You, Me & He” on the 3C label. It is the women in his life that have most inspired him, as is the case with his daughter after whom the track “Sarina (Sarah)” on his latest album is named. A resident musician in many notable jazz venues throughout New York City, and almost every club east of the Rockies – from after hours clubs, stadiums, and two Presidential Inaugural Balls. He is the leader of Michael’s Karrtet™, which features the musicianship of Ron Affif, Victor Jones, John Benitez, Randy Johnston, Alex Blake, and Essiet O. Essiet. My dad who was a draftsman, had an unique and inspiring way to channel the energies of a hyper little girl, he would hand me a huge piece of drawing paper and some pencils so i could draw while he worked on his current project. Since, i cannot remember a time without a pad or lose paper and pencil as my constant companion.

Though i did not have any formal art instruction until high school. I was exposed to arts with books and material and crafts, with my mom who designed and made craft ideas from mini Santa's to fancy embroideries. The art and creativity was a big part of my childhood.

After starting another art course, the demands and rewards of motherhood saw to it that it was put on the back burner but always simmering. When i wasn't doing art, i was always doing some kind of creative activity from model building to crochet, designing my own patterns. in time, when circumstance allowed, i went back to school. One diploma at Academy of Learning for Pc Support Specialist, then the second at Niagara College For Graphic Fundamentals And Fine Arts.

My influences range from Neolithic to 19th century impressionist art on up to present day. You will see i have taken to the impressionist period and can see the influences in many pieces of my work. Little incidents in just living an ordinary life spark a creative drive to a new painting or piece that emerges from that speck of inspiration. The past 4-5 years has been both a blossoming of output on a mooded commercial success. The critical acclaim spurs my creative drive to continuously push back the boundaries of my art.

I cannot know where my art will take me but i do aspire to exhibit in places like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver as well as stepping out of Canada to enter the international art world with a first stop to New York City. My ultimate goal is to become an internationally known artist.

Verbalz is a Brooklyn NY native and rising star on the music scene. A.K.A. Brooklyn's Own, he's a true lover of all genres of music.

The Rhythmic Lounge: When did you first realize that you had musical talent and would pursue a career as an artist?

Verbalz: I first analyzed I had talent at 14 years old, I wasn't sure I wanted to pursue it as a career until 17 years of age, I use to write lyrics while sitting up in the crack house, I began rapping about my then current lifestyle.

TRL: Growing up in New York, Brooklyn specifically, how was the music scene and was it easy and inviting for you as you developed as an artist?

Verbalz!

Verbalz: The music scene was vigorous, very competitive and you had to prove you could spit amongst the elite. I would say for me it was easy, inviting and everything else...lol nah, for real tho it’s just what I love to do. I lived a street life so the hostile environment never fazes me.

TRL: Describe your creative process when writing music, getting ready for performances and shooting videos!

Verbalz: When writing music, I have to be in the mood, all my creative juices have to be flowing. I tend to write several songs at once though, so basically when I get stuck on one instead of completely stopping. I select another beat and begin writing something fresh. For performances I recite lyrics over while performing privately in a mirror, also use rehearsal studios. As far as video's goes I or either I and the producer writes up a treatment if needed or if not we freestyle it.

TRL: Who are your musical influences?

Verbalz: Honestly, I am my first influence.

This is what makes me original; however, I am also influenced by Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, 50 Cent, 2pac, Biggie, Jay Z, Nas, Lauren Hill, Adele and a few others. Basically I listed whom I listen to as my other influences.

TRL: What can we look forward to from you throughout the remainder of 2015?

Cassandra launched her ep on the 28th August 2014 at Brixtons Hootananny where she delivered an outstanding set wowwing the audience and leaving her name on everyones lips.....which led to popular demand that she be added to the line up at late notice to Sanchez and Etana show at the Troxy November 23rd 2014.

In 2015 she has travelled up and down the country being booked to headline her own shows. She also has releases in house music with london based duo Ed Case & Dan Genal (State Unknown) with tracks 'Need 2 Know' & 'Giving Out Your Love' which have had airplay on mainstream radio.

Cassandra's song with Flawless Order was played as an entrance song to the fight where Mitchell Smith won the world title which was aired on Sky's Boxnation and is due for release.

Joe Leonard & The Southern Soul Band Joe Leonard learned how to play the bass guitar at the age of 4, playing with his dad, while neighbors watched him the windows. His interest didn’t stop there. While playing for the church, Joe also learned to play drums and the organ.

Though born in Port Lavaca, Texas, his family relocated to Detroit while Joe was still young. This proved to be beneficial in the young musician’s life. This move allowed Joe to spend countless hours in the presence of such Motown greats as Kicker Womack, Ben Baber (Jazz organist) Ronnie Sandelin, Jimmy Sterling (former Chairman of the Board) drummer, Norma Jean Bell, Shields of Faith (Gospel Quartet) Roosevelt Leaks and a host of others. Joe turned that exposure to such great artists into motivation. The Mark May Band (long running opening act for the renowned Allman Brothers) was a driving force behind where he is today. Mark provided encouragement and coaching. With May, Joe learned to express what he felt through his instrument.

Joe has been afforded the opportunity to share the stage with Kicker Womack, Ben Baber, Ronnie Sandelin, Billy “Soul” Bonds (Scat Kat Kitty Kitty), Lady Aubrey, Georgi’O Green, Kenne Wayne, Andre Lee, and Jimmy Sterling.

Joe Leonard and The Southern Soul Band (formerly known as The Blues Dudes) was formed in June 2012. Their debut CD, On The Way Up (released in 2013), featured such hits as Black Cat Bone and Come Here Baby.

Now, Joe Leonard and The Southern Soul Band are back with their second CD, Mystery Lady, which was released on July 6, 2014. This anxiously awaited CD includes the newly released single, Let Me Talk To You Baby.

MATT LANDE LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR NEW “GLOW” ALBUM Recording Artist’s Album to Raise Funds for Cancer; Song Honors Friends He Lost Matt Lande, an alternative recording artist from Portland, has launched a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds to complete his new album, “Glow". The album contains the song “Looking Down,” which honors two friends of Lande’s who passed away from cancer, late last year. The song was written to help raise funds for cancer research and to help families of cancer patients. The proceeds of the Indigogo campaign will be used for mixing, mastering, and promotion of the album.

Lande has been compared to the smooth vocalist, Darren Hayes (Savage Garden) but with some extra edge. Fans of Matt are found to also be fans of 30 Seconds to Mars, Coldplay, Muse, HIM and David Cook.

The Rhythmic Lounge: For those who aren’t familiar with you, please tell us in your own words...who is Cardye and what is it that you want people to understand about what you do?

Cardye: I want to celebrate relationships in a new light! I feel that R&B has strayed away from its roots.

The genre used to speak of unconditional love and the pursuit of it! I want to bring back the qualities of love that are easily forgotten, or tainted by one hitter quitters. I want to showcase the sexy side of relationships by pulling from real experiences. It's not all pretty, maybe a little grungy at times, like the guitar! But at the end of the day, you know where you want to be. I speak for the man that is sure of himself and knows what he wants out of life! Overall, spreading great music and love!

TRL: What level of influence did growing up in North Carolina have on your pursuit in music and entertainment?

Cardye: I believe North Carolina is one of the biggest melting pots of the country! Many people from the Deep South, Mid West, and North all seem to gather to this state (The middle ground). So I was exposed to a lot of musical genres. From Bluegrass to Gospel, then back around to R&B and Hip Hop! The vast numbers of musicians here also influenced me to get out and grab my own instruments! I've met more musicians here then inspiring artists!

TRL: You are not the average 2015 R&B artist. What truly sets you apart?

Cardye: I would have to say my original sound and lyrics! The music is what reaches the listener. I want to connect with my listeners like no one else. I tend to write more about real life situations and experiences that people can relate to. At the end of the day, it's just you and your significant other. If I can help set the mood, or give you something to ride to while you're going out! Mission accomplished!

I want to create memories. That's what sets me apart!

TRL: Have you ever considered expanding your talent into other areas of music and entertainment, such as producing etc?

Cardye: I'm always trying to push myself! I am a true guitarist at heart, so production was always in the picture! Being a part of the entire creative process is what I crave as an artist! I was blessed enough to do some guitar work on Trey Songs album "Chapter 5" Interlude 4 U. I see more opportunities like this in the future...God willing!

TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention?

Cardye: I'm really excited about this year in general! I took some time off to have my daughter and now It's time to get back to work! I've already released a single this year under my label Urban Sexy Entertainment called Wants & Needs. I'll be dropping another single mid August! This will lead up to an event presented by U.S.E. called The Raleigh Stand Up Concert! This event has a great roster of up and coming artist from North Carolina! After that, we are looking to release a full EP in the late fall!
