TRL MAGAZINE SEPT 2016 #1

Page 1

Chantel Sawyer (Atkins) (CEO/Owner) I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host. The radio’s success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. I’m incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy! Be sure to go to www.therhythm iclounge.com to see the profiles for the great talent displayed in this issue and take a look at our new magazine site at http://w w w .trlm agazine.com Thanks for the support, and happy reading!

Kevin Resnover Kevin has been playing the bass guitar since he was 13 years old, and now as a 35 year-old musician, his resume continues to grow as he adds other genres of music to create a melodic future for himself. With gospel roots, Resnover started playing the bass guitar for his church youth choir as a teenager. In sixth grade, he was already playing cello in the school orchestra and moved on to play the upright bass in the high school jazz ensemble. Upon high school graduation, he continued with his gospel beginnings and played the bass guitar at church in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. While playing at church, Kevin became one of the well-known bass players in the city's gospel circuit, with opportunities to back artists such as the late Andre Crouch, Bishop Paul Morton, Dorinda Clark, Marvin Sapp, and Detrick Hatton. A fan of Chic Corea, Robert Glasper, Doobie Powell, Kevin enjoys the neo-soul movement and jazz, which are evident in his latest project, Healing Virtues. Releasing his first album in 2014, Kevin put together a stylish Christmas album remixing a few holiday favorites and overlaying his bass playing with music he arranged and produced. With an immediate family blessed with musical talent, Kevin describes his bass playing as "eclectic" and thinks of himself as a musical outsider. These days, the Indy native enjoys playing with his cover band out of Austin, Texas. As a musical epicenter, Austin has afforded him opportunities to play on the famed 6th street, as well as weddings and private events in the capitol city. He has made his home in San Antonio, Texas since leaving Berklee College of Music in 2010 and has enjoyed opening for old school singers and musicians like Keith Sweat, the Ojays, and Full Force in the home of the Alamo. With the strong South Texas and Hispanic heritage in San Antonio, Kevin has been able to mix his bass playlist with country, Cuban jazz, R&B, and looks forward to an opportunity to add a Tejano band to his growing resume.

The Rhythmic Lounge: Please introduce yourself and give the readers a brief background for those who aren’t familiar with you! Kevin Resnover: I'm a bassist, composer, arranger and an upcoming artist who enjoys creating original tunes. I also work with cover bands playing gospel, soul, jazz, Latin and country music. TRL: You call yourself a “musical outsider.” Would you say that gives you an immediate advantage or disadvantage? KR: Being an "musical outsider" for me just means that I was not one of those cool guys that could "name drop" other musicians and that had the "know it all" attitude like most musicians i would meet who could play all the oldest and latest tunes. I always kind of did my own thing and then learned about the musical background history and fun facts later in life. I think being an "outsider" is both an advantage and disadvantage in that most people want to hear the type of music that’s most palatable to them. On the other hand, having the ability to create your own vibe gives new life and options for the listeners. I feel when you're organic, true to your heart and commit to making the best possible music that you can, listeners respond positively. TRL: What has been your most memorable accomplishment so far in your career? KR: I've played in lots of variety bands and have backed amateurs as while as professional artist. Nothing has been better than creating original songs with fellow musicians and finishing my own musical projects. It’s been very therapeutic, and I feel it gives glory to God when we do exactly what He's placed in us to do. TRL: What advice would you give to an aspiring entertainer who is struggling with the choice of standing out amongst the rest and taking the easier road by following the norm? KR: I would tell them to first seek God for direction since He's the giver of our gifts. Then to never ever give up on your dreams. Every time that I tried quitting, it seemed like an opportunity or inspiration was just around the corner. Those days will come. Don't tell everyone your dreams because not everyone can handle it. Most people will try and discourage you, but surround your self with other creative like-minded people who can inspire and help to guide you in right direction. Finally, I would say that although you may hear that its hard to sell and make good money musically today, (which this maybe true in some ways) , that its also a lot easier today for Independent musicians to own/sell their music, plus be seen and heard by potentially millions with the help of the internet without you even leaving your home. Having multiple streams of income from other opportunities is definitely a plus, but the ball is really in our court now! TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention? KR: Yes I would like readers to know that if you enjoy nice Jazz, Soul, Neo soul, and Experimental music then come check me out on www.Kevinbassmusic.com You can download my new single, Coincidence, free and also take a listen to my new album, Healing Virtues.

The Rhythmic Lounge: Please introduce yourself and give the readers a brief background for those who aren’t familiar with you! Dale J. Evans: My name is Dale J. Evans. I'm a Christian artist, native to Indianapolis, IN. In 2014 I was signed to TyscotLOUD, which is the rap division of the legendary Tyscot Records. I've also had numerous songs placed on 2 of the Holy Hip Hop Cd's, volumes 9 and 10. I'm now the president of my on indie label, Kingdom Way Central Music Group LLC, which is distributed through Warner Music Group. TRL: You had a love and talent for music from a very young age! Who were some of your musical influences growing up? DJE: I would have to say that my first inspiration in music was my mother Linda Fay. She didn't have a very loud and powerful voice but it was very smooth and beautiful. She wouldn't sing in public to often but I can remember the influence she had on the room when she did. It gave me chills. Some of my other influences was artist like Marvin Gay, Shalamar, Slick Rick, Ghetto Boys, Sam Cook, LL Cool J, Run DMC, Pac, Biggie etc... TRL: When some hear the term “Rapper” they don’t necessarily associate the term “Gospel” with that. How were you able to take a talent that isn’t usually considered “clean” and “Christlike” and make it so? DJE: When most hear the term "Rapper" they automatically think of the freedom to expression, articulate or communicate relevant information. Now if Joe Blow can take money, sex, drugs, and violence, and find the freedom to express, articulate or communicate that as relevant information, then surely I can take the need for God, healing, restoration and salvation in a non-corny way, and deliver that as relevant information. There's really no difference. TRL: Coming from a singing and rapping background, was it difficult to be taken seriously at first when you became a Pastor? DJE: No not at all and let me start by saying that there are different types of pastors. I just happen to be a pastor of a evangelical music ministry that goes into prisons, communities, detention centers, group homes, and shelters; although our pulpit is on the move the platform is still the same and no less significant than the churches you see on the corners in your neighborhood. TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention? DJE: Yes, we do have a lot of projects that are in the works right now. I have a new single and video set to release on (ITunes, Amazon Music and Google Play) 09.23.16 titled "No One Greater", and two more singles shortly after that. Then I'll be dropping the whole cd "Soul Therapy". We also have other up and coming artist from KWC Music Group such as " Wallace, God's Light, D'Vine Wordz, Mr. Testimony, Pastor C. and D. Daniels that will be releasing great music this year. We'll also be continuing The Accountability Tour in several prison systems. We've already done concerts in 5 prisons this year. Eventually we'll be branching out into communities all over the nation making an effort to advance the Kingdom of God.

Kimberly Kent

Indianapolis, IN

Entrepreneur(|(Indie(Artist(|(Mother(|(Wife|(Worshipper

Greetings, I am Kimberly Michelle Kent, a minister of the Word in song, and I've been strategically created for "The Journey" of worship both unto God and as a lifestyle. My desire is that you never end your journey of worship and high praise unto the LORD. It is my prayer that "The Journey" will be an asset in your life, drawing you closer to our Heavenly Father; soaking in His presence, embracing your healing, and increasing your faith. I invite you to share your journey experience with me as I share mine with you. The Rhythmic Lounge: Please introduce yourself and give the readers a brief background for those who aren’t familiar with you! Kimberly Kent: Native of Indianapolis Indiana the industrious mother of 10 children and 2 grandchildren. Married for 12 years to Samuel Kent, III. I come from a musical family and remember my mother singing me to sleep at 3 years of age. This sparked a fire in my heart that could only be expressed through music. Early in life I began to sing in several local churches. My craft evolved more as I learned to play several musical instruments: the viola, violin and piano. I also directed several local church choirs and am currently the Director of Worship at my home church, Justified by Faith under the leadership of Pastor Jeffrey McGhee.

18

www.therhythmiclounge.com

TRL: Who were your musical/spiritual influences growing up? KK: I know it is common to say I started singing in church. I wasn’t allowed to listen to certain types of music growing up so I learned to value gospel music as my musical outlet. From Sandi Patti, to John P. Kee, Mississippi Mass and so on. As I grew up I began to appreciate some secular artist; Boyz to Men, Whitney Houston, Envogue, Toni Braxton, Babyface, Celine Dion etc. My taste in music has matured and I now enjoy and respect all musical genres. TRL: Your debut CD “The Journey” was released about 3 months ago! How did the title come about? KK: For the longest time God has had a calling on my life. And subsequently I have learned that when God calls you to do something he is very intentional in His plan. It will all come together. As long as I can remember I have always sung in church and taught music or directed: from church choirs to singing with a group. My aspiration was to have someone write a song just for me, but that never happened so I continued to sing as background in a gospel group. In 2013 I had major throat surgery for the second time on my vocal cords and was told that I may never sing again. And that if I chose to sing I would not be able to hold notes or project my voice. Still God had a plan for my life. After a recovery period I was able to sing but there was something missing. So I began writing my feelings down when I came across the scripture Romans 8:28. I called my best friend and she talked to me about hiding behind others and staying in the box that others had put me in. I needed to walk in the authority that God had given to me. After praying I turned in my resignation from the gospel group August 19, 2015 and began “My Journey”, whose mission statement is as follows: I am a minister of the Word in song, and I've been strategically created to walk this ‘Journey’ of worship both to God and in my lifestyle. My prayer is that you never end your journey of worship and high praise unto the LORD and that "The Journey" will be an asset in your life, drawing you closer to our Heavenly Father; soaking in His presence, embracing your healing, and increasing your faith. I invite you to share your journey experience with me as I share mine with you. My desired outcome is to spread the gospel message to all. My greatest success in this journey will be the opportunity to travel not only in Indiana but throughout the world spreading the gospel message in song. TRL: Do you have any upcoming events that you’d like to mention to our readers? KK: I have several conferences coming up, please feel free to go to my Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter page and follow me! Also you can become a fan of “The Journey” at Jango.com.

Goldenboy Chicago, Illinois My name is Jalen Dear, also known as Goldenboy! I am an 18 year old sound engineer, producer, rapper, and CEO of a soon to come music label. I lived on the south side of Chicago the majority of my life and I have a 6-year relationship with music. The fact that I learned everything by myself with no help at all keeps pushing me to do more with music. But first, I have to give thanks for my pops passing down his FL Studio to me at the age of 11 years old. My father is a producer as well. Really that’s where it started on the producing side. When it comes down to rapping and writing songs I got to give thanks to my brother Gibron Lastname, whom is also an artist from Montgomery, Alabama. Living in Chicago has its ups and downs but that’s how us Chicagoans get stronger. Prior to moving to Chicago, I was born in Three Rivers, Michigan. I express reality through my music. The sound, lyrics, and flow all represent my life and what evolves around it. The Rhythmic Lounge: Please introduce yourself and give the readers a brief background for those who aren’t familiar with you! Goldenboy: My name is Goldenboy. I am a rapper & producer from Chicago. I started out making beats for various artist in Chicago before going into rapping. My father is also a producer, that's where the music comes from in my blood. I was born September 22nd, 1998, shout out to all the virgos out there as well too. I was born in Three Rivers, Michigan, that's like a small town not too many people heard of. I moved to Chicago at the age of 7 I believe. It wasn't the happiest day of my life but I didn't expect to know what I know now living here in Chicago. So it has some pros. TRL: You were exposed to music and entertainment at a very young age…only 11 years old at the time. Do you feel like you have an advantage over other artist’s your age who didn’t have that early exposure? Goldenboy: I feel like I have a major advantage. Not only do I rap and make beats but I also know mixing and mastering. So not all the time do I have to buy time in a professional studio. Most of the time I record and mix out of my home studio. TRL: How has living in the Southside of Chicago shaped you as an artist? Goldenboy: Living in Chicago shaped me as an artist in various ways. It makes my music versatile, not every song is the same, you know? I create songs on things that I've experienced. If you were to live in Chicago I promise you that you will experience a lot of things you wouldn't experience anywhere else. Chicago is a very special place. TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention? Goldenboy: In October, i have a EP dropping. I will be dropping a couple of tracks prior to my EP. I also have a couple video shoots coming as well. If any readers want to be connected with me follow me on twitter @GoldboyMusic. Everything far as me & music will be posted there. Crystall Babii Brooklyn, NY

I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and was always very active. I did tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and karate. At the age of 7, I started getting into a lot of pageants and during my second year doing it, I was first runner up in the national America miss competition out of 900 girls. At the Age of 10, my family and I moved out to Hagerstown, Md. It was very different from what I was used to but I tried to get adjust to it. I started to cheer for Platinum Elite! I cheered for about a year and then got into the sport of basketball. After my middle school years I took basketball more seriously when I got to high school and I was one of the best. I got first all-team player and 3rd for most points scored in the tri-state area. Coming up to my senior year, I got very close to my music and started pushing for my music to be bigger than what I really thought it would be. Now music is going to be a career that I make sure I continue to pursue! http://ateamrecords.weebly.com/! https://www.facebook.com/crystallbabii/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel

The Rhythmic Lounge: Please introduce yourself and give the readers a brief background for those who aren’t familiar with you! Crystall Babii: Hello everyone it's Crystal McLeod my artist name is "Crystall Babii" For those who don't know me my turn up day is August 17 1996. I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and relocated from Brooklyn to Maryland at the age of 10. TRL: Who are your biggest musical influences? CB: Nobody would ever guess but Michael Jackson is a big inspiration when it comes to my music when I had talent shows I would always perform a song of his he was different. TRL: Brooklyn is such a music mecca, especially when it comes to hip-hop. How did growing up there influence your love for music, and was there an instant effect on you when you left and moved to Maryland? CB: Growing up in Brooklyn didn't really influence my music career. It was where I'm from you know, I was always active participating in jazz, ballet, tap, hip-hop and modeling dancing. I was first runner up in the Miss National American pageant. I was placed second out of 90 some girls. I got into music when i moved to Maryland. That's what influenced my music career, there weren’t much dance classes and if there were it didn't fit what I was looking for. So I started writing my music in high school when I realized that I could actually sing Maryland brought out a side of me I didn't know I really had. I will always rep the BK but i got made love for the DMV. TRL: Have you considered expanding your talent into other areas of music, such as songwriting or producing? CB: Yes I do plan on expanding my music in other areas when it comes to songwriting I would definitely love to make hits for other music artist. TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention? CB: Right now I’m working on the release of my mixtape. It’s really different from other artist mixtape. I told Songs that i like and did a remix. So many people like the songs so much i had to give my fans something to listen to. The next big project is my album i can't wait..It’s going to be fire. A lot of people know who i am but a lot don't. When this album drop i feel like everyone will know who's Crystall Babii is. I'm doing a show in Florida in Orlando area it's on the 18th of November it a celebrity basketball game for the Classic FAMU. !

Larry Luve

Born on August 31, 1974 and raised in a small town in Georgia called Millen which is the county of Jenkins that hold a population of about 3,492 people. I’m known to friends and family as Larry “Luve” but my biological name is Larry Wright Jr. I grew up in poverty, which was a struggle for me because I was surrounded by the activities of the street life. There were drugs, prostitution, violence, and alcohol bootlegging etc. around me. Although I live in this type of environment, I refused to become a product of my environment so I found other ways to entertainment myself. I began writing poetry at the age of 8 years old because I didn’t have a lot of material things growing up which allowed me to be creative and just write about the things going on around me. I still can remember winning 1st place in a poetry contest in elementary school in which I wrote about “the Ghetto”. I used poetry and music to escape from the madness that surrounded me at that time. My love for music began to grow as I got older and can still remember my very first tape that was giving to me by my mother. She bought me a Run D.M.C. cassette tape for Christmas and a boom box that I couldn’t even carry. I would walk around with my Kangoo hat on listening to “walk this way” and my favorite “Run’s House” all day long. I also was a major fan of Melle Mel, 2 Live Crew, Slick Rick, KRS One, Kilo, Too Short, Mc. Shy D, Africa Bambaataa, and more. I then began to transform my poetry into rap lyrics and would use instrumentals from artists to create my own songs. As a teenager, I met up with a childhood friend of mine by the name of Earl B.K.A. “Prince Magnetic” who was at the time our hometown D.J. Believe me when I say that this guy owned every 12inch album that was on the market back in the late 80’s such as “The Get Fresh Crew” and “Eric B/rakim” I Ant No Joke”. We would be in his room making and looping beats from some of the best in the rap game. “Prince” had a homemade studio with two turntables, a mixer, an equalizer, one big speaker, and an amp and let’s just say that his mom use to hate to see me come because she knew it was about to be noisy. We formed a rap label called Mini Stiles Records in which we would copyright our songs by mailing them to ourselves so it would have the stamp on it. We would go around having M.C. battles and talent shows for the local talent in our town. After graduating in 1994 from Jenkins County High school in my hometown of Millen Ga, I wanted to learn more about music so I attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, Ga. It was a major step toward pursuing my lifelong dream to become an M.C. I learned hands-on-training at (AIA) and the knowledge/skills I would need to know in the music industry. Being in Atlanta at that time in the mid 90’s was great for me because it was known for being one of the hottest cities around for music. There were companies such as So-So Def, La face, Rowdy, and Def Jam South etc. After completing my studies at (AIA), I moved back home where years later I committed a felony, which landed me in prison for 10 years back in 2002. I was released in 2012 and from then to now I haven’t looked back since. I attended this online college and graduated on July 05, 2015 with an associate’s degree in science, and continuing for a Bachelor degree in business. I feel like “I already know everything about the street life why not learn about something that I don’t know.” I am now currently an intern at Lg Music Publishing Company under the CEO/Founder Ms. Renita Holyfield who has not only been a mentor of mine but also a true friend. All I ever wanted to do was become an M.C. and be recognized for my lyrical gift. I could care less about fame; all I want is for people to remember my name. Respect!

Album Reviews enRapture – Beauty Of The Lamb by Ross Guity

Rating:

★★★

There's nothing in the world like the art of incredible live instrumentation, and bringing it in their own unique way with a classic throwback twist are Soul/Funk outfit 'enRAPTURE' out of the Hoosier state of Indiana led by brothers Thomas and Eric Cheatham. 'In The Morning,' an enjoyable, head-nodding track with spiritual overtones, and the soulful funk vibe of 'Never Find Us' are all-around impressive original compositions that should connect very well with the 'grown folk' demographic here in late 2016 and beyond. Look out for their full-length project titled 'Beauty Of The Lamb' in the very near future from this very talented and sonically-creative band.

Michael Egleton - Behind These Walls by Ross Guity !

Rating: ★

★★★

Veteran award-winning music creator and Akron, Ohio representative Michael Egleton brings the fire with 'Behind These Walls,' a powerfully smooth, jazzy, emotionally soulful song that will surely connect with the ladies and gents involved in relationships where there is a whole lot of insecurity and not a whole lot of communication. Egleton's bluesy vocals was beautifully complemented by the superb contribution on the track by renowned jazz sax-man Bob Esterle, and in my opinion is his best work to date. WWW.MICHAELEGLETON.COM
