This book is based upon an antique doll collection auctioned by Theriault’s of Annapolis, Maryland. Design: Travis Hammond Photography: Gerald Nelson Senior Conservator: Terry Lanford

In 1879, Louisa May Alcott, at the age of 47, a self-described “spinster”, became the foster mother of her infant namesake niece, Lulu. Louisa, the author of Little Women, one of the most widely-read novels of all times, who had become wealthy from the success of this book after her own childhood of abject poverty, indulged Lulu with every extravagance including a vast collection of dolls and had even penned a volume of children stories, titled Lulu’s Library.
Is it any wonder, then, that Louisa, with her own love of dolls, would indulge Lulu, her only niece and her charge, with a bounty of the luxury playthings she had never owned? Of Lulu’s first birthday in 1880 Louisa wrote “Gave my baby two kisses when she woke, and escorted her down to find a new chair decked with ribbons, and a doll’s carriage tied with pink; toys, pictures, flowers, and a cake, with a red and a blue candle.” Louisa died at the young age of 56 when Lulu was only nine. Lulu’s Swiss father insisted that the nine-year-old return to his native Switzerland and accounts tell that Lulu was forced to abandon “the vast collection of dolls” that lived in her Boston home. Lulu lived in Europe until the age of 95. It is not known what happened to the dolls.
Lulu Alcott in Boston at the age of 3.
In Louisa’s own childhood dolls had been makeshift and simple. In 1839 her mother wrote “My Dear Little Girl, Will you accept this doll from me on your seventh birthday. She will be a quiet playmate for my active Louisa…” Despite her mother’s pensive note, dolls became more than a quiet playmate for the energetic and ambitious Louisa. Later Louisa reminisced “…at twelve I set up as a doll’s dressmaker, with my sign out and wonderful models in my window. All the children employed me, and my turbans were the rage at one time, to the great dismay of the neighbors’ hens, who were hotly hunted down, that I might tweak out their downiest feathers to adorn the dolls’ headgear”.
None of the fine antique dolls offered at this auction are known to have ever belonged to Lulu. Nevertheless, because she, as well as Louisa May Alcott whose writings have stirred and motivated hundreds of thousands of young girls for the past century and a half, were both keepers of dolls during their time, this book is dedicated to them. x
