“Christmas” Doll, Model 133, by Kling

14” (36 cm.) Bisque socket head with flattened solid dome, blue glass inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, lightly feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accent line between the solemn lips, pierced ears, blonde lambswool wig, composition shoulderplate and original muslin stitch-jointed torso, composition and wooden jointed arms, composition lower legs, painted black heels. Condition: generally excellent, finish on arms lightly retouched. Marks: 133. Comments: C.F. Kling, circa 1875. Value Points: lovely bisque complemented by gentle expression, original body and lace and silk costume, pencil inscribed on the torso “Dec 25, 1877”. $800/1100

2. Petite Sonneberg Bisque Closed Mouth Doll, Model 117, in the French Look-Alike Manner

12” (30 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head, large pale blue glass inset eyes with spiral threading and darker iris rims, dark eyeliner, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with accent details, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, Sonneberg composition and wooden fully-jointed body with straight wrists, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 117. Comments: Sonneberg, mystery maker, the doll closely resembles the early portrait bébés by Jumeau whose market it sought to capture, circa 1880. Value Points: beautiful face enhanced by splendid eyes. original body and body finish. $700/900

3. German All-Bisque Bye-Lo Baby, Wigged Variation

6” (15 cm.) All-bisque with one-piece bisque head and torso, brown glass sleep eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with center accent line, brunette mohair bobbed wig, loop-jointed bent bisque arms and legs, bare feet. Condition:

generally excellent. Marks: 16/10 copr by Grace S. Putnam Germany (incised). Comments: Bye-Lo Baby, circa 1925, designed by Grace Putnam and made in Germany. Value Points: rarer wigged variation, with original Bye-lo baby paper label on front torso, and wonderful antique costume. $400/500

4. German All-Bisque Bye-Lo with Swivel Head

6” (15 cm.) Solid domed bisque swivel head, painted brown baby hair with slight modeling detail, tiny blue glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, tinted brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, loop-jointed bisque arms and legs, bare feet. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 6-15. Comments: Bye-lo designed by Grace Putnam, produced in Germany for Borgfeldt, circa 1925. Value Points: rarer swivel head variation of the model, with glass eyes, antique costume. $300/400

5. Large Neapolitan Angel with Carved Wooden Wings

14” (36 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head turned to the side and gazing upward, sculpted brown curly hair, enamel eyes, parted lips with tiny painted teeth and tongue tip, tow-wrapped armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs to above the knees, bare feet, attached wooden wings having carved detail of feathering. Condition: generally excellent, costume delicate, thumb chipped, original finish. Comments: Neapolitan, attributed to Nicola Ingaldo, mid/late 1700s. $800/1100

Including 2 ½” needle case in the shape of decorative box with lithographed images of children and mirrored lid, opening to interior with fold-out needle envelopes; 1” wide pocket watch labeled France, with gilt chain; gilt chain necklace with coral beads and tassels; 3” wide purse with embossed gilt frame, silk cover, and red leather interior; leather folio which unwraps to toiletries; and 3 ½” box with gilt lettering Handkerchiefs containing one original tied-in hankie. 17” (43 cm.) All wooden screen with arched crescent top has inlay wooden marquetry suggesting an open fan with scalloped edging, and is centered by a leather panel with oil-painted flowers and leave. Excellent condition. French, circa 1875. $400/500

13” (30 cm.) Polychromed terra cotta head turned to the side and gazing upward, sculpted brown curly hair, enamel eyes, parted lips with tiny painted teeth and tongue tip, tow-wrapped armature body, carved wooden lower arms and legs to above the knees, bare feet, wire-framed gown, attached wooden wings (12” span) having carved detail of feathering, original cream/ ochre finish. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Neapolitan, attributed to Nicola Ingaldo, mid/late 1700s, his works were recorded in the inventory of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies.

Important Early Italian Wooden Poupard with Original Wooden Cradle

18” (46 cm.) doll. 20” cradle. The carved wooden onepiece poupard with gesso and polychrome finish has exceptional detail of carving, including incised brush marks on hair, defined ears, well-defined eye sockets with painted brown eyes, carved open mouth, tinted brows; and with body shaped as though wrapped in a bunting. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Italian, 1700s. Value Points: exceptionally fine state of original preservation, with richly carved and painted costume details and facial features; the doll is presented in original wooden cradle with original paint; a note included in the cradle indicates provenance from the Bodmer Collection. $5500/7500

15. Grand European Wooden Carved Doll with Outstanding Sculpting and Costume

36” (91 cm.) including crown and base. 30” doll. All wooden carved doll with oval shaped face and elongated throat, brown sculpted hair with deeply-incised combmarks gathered in a chignon at the back of head, partly sculpted ears, heavily-modeled eyelids over brown enameled eyes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with defined philtrum; the head, torso and hands are carved as one unit, blue painted torso having tunic shape, carved definition of toes, jointing at elbows, expressive uniquelysculpted fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: European, 1700s. Value Points: very fine sculpting of face, hair, fingers and feet, with original embroidered tapestry gown and (detachable) silver metallic crown, on gilt painted wooden base. $6000/8000

16. Three 19th Century Tapestry Purses

5” (13 cm.) -7”w. Each has elaborately detailed woven tapestry scene, one with woven inscription “Hommage a Antoine Watteau Peintre 1684-1721” and with elaborate faux-ruby stones accenting the gilt frame, another with scenes of seven frolicking cherubs in garden setting, with gilt frame, and the third with elaborate symbols including urns, dancing ladies, gardens and garden walls, with gilt frame accented with brown mosaic inlays. Excellent condition. Mid-1800s. $400/600

15” (38 cm.) One-piece carved wooden child posed seated with head tilted to the side, right arm uplifted and left arm resting on arm of chair, feet posed on foot rest, brown enamel eyes in well-defined eye sockets, defined upper eyeliner, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth in shy smile, defined teeth, blonde fleecy curls peeking from under attached brocade cap. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Obergammerau region of Germany, late 1700s. Value Points: wonderful presence, the child has original very fine painted finish,

expressive facial features and body pose, early costume, and is posed seated in original well-carved wooden child’s chair with wheeled base and playful glass marbles. $6500/8500

18. Early European Parade Doll with Wooden Articulated Body and Superb Costume

25” (64 cm.) Solid domed shoulderhead with painted complexion over gesso, small brown enamel inset eyes in well-detailed sockets, tinted brows and nostrils, closed mouth, blushed cheeks and well-defined chin tip, fleece blonde wig in elaborate coiled coiffure under gilt metallic crown, wooden body with metal pin in back torso allowing posing changes, jointing at shoulders, modeled bent arms, expressively posed fingers, crude pin jointing at hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent, some retouch to hands. Comments: European, the doll was used in ceremonial parades and as exhibition display, early 1800s. Value Points: rare to find, especially in this fine condition, the doll is wearing original (some frailty) dress of metallic woven fabric, coarsely-woven undergarments, padded leggings with gold braid wrap, and carries a garland of flowers and silk ribbon. $4500/6500 16.

22” (56 cm.) Pale pressed bisque socket head with very plump rounded facial modeling, large blue glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose blushed eyeshadow, multi-feathered brows, small rounded nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with accent line between the lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body with loose-ball-jointing, and distinctive metal hands, well costumed in antique velvet suit, white shirt with Buster Brown collar, socks, leather shoes, velvet cap. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Petit & Dumoutier, circa 1882.

Value Points: very rare model in fine large size with outstanding bisque and modeling, dramatic eyes that contrast the very pale bisque, original rare body. Ex-Lucy Morgan Collection. $6000/8000

French Bisque Brown-Eyed Bébé, Size 10, by Leon

27” (69 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate with modeled bosom and shoulderblades, large brown glass enamel inset eyes, thick eyeliner, dark painted lashes, brushstroked and multi-feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with modeled space and well-defined tongue tip between the shaded lips, defined philtrum and dimpled chin, pierced ears, brunette extended-length mohair, kid body with scalloped collarette and gusset-jointed legs, hinged kid-over-wooden upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent, faint hairline on backside of left arm, body is excellent and very sturdy with few patches at hip joints. Marks: Bru Jne 10 (head) Bru Jne N.10 (shoulderplate).

Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1884. 17” (43 cm.) Amber-tinted bisque socket head, brown glass sleep eyes in half moon shape, dark eyeliner, painted dark curly lashes, black brushstroked brows with feathered details, accented nostrils, open mouth with richly-outlined lips, two porcelain upper teeth, tongue, black mohair bobbed wig over plaster pate, amber-tinted composition baby body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: L made in Germany 12 JDK 243. Comments: Kestner, circa 1912, their portrait of Asian baby in original Gump’s costume; Gump’s, the luxury San Francisco store, commissioned a small number of the dolls which they costumed

in their own studios using finest Chinese silks, embroideries and accessories. Value Points: superb original condition of the rare doll with finest bisque and painting, multi-layered original costume including slippers and cap. Included is a wooden straightback chip-carved chair with flowers and vines, and original brown finish that is decorated with red and green details, 19th century. $2200/2800

French AmberTinted Bisque Poupée Depicting Asian Lady by Gaultier in Superb Costume

17” (43 cm.) Amber-tinted bisque swivel head on amber-tinted bisque shoulderplate, small brown glass inset eyes with dark eyeliner, painted lashes, black feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with pale outlined lips, unpierced ears, very firmly-stuffed kid poupée body with shapely torso, gusset-jointing at hips and knees, amber-tinted bisque arms to above the elbows. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F. 4

G. Comments: Gaultier, circa 1865, few Gaultier models from this era bear the maker’s initials, this and the uniqueness of the Asian model indicate a special commission doll, probably for the 1867 Paris International Exposition. Value Points: very rare doll with gorgeous complexion and painting, rare signature, very sturdy original body whose rare bisque arms have matching amber-tinted complexion, and outstanding original Asian costume including attached headdress and silk shoes for bound feet. $6000/8000

25” (64 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, short feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, open mouth with outlined lips, two porcelain upper teeth, tongue, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, composition baby body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Q made in Germany 20 237 JDK Jr. Ges Gesch N 1070. Comments: Kestner, circa 1914, earliest variation of the Hilda model. Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, open mouth, shaded and outlined lips, two porcelain upper teeth, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, composition and wooden ball-jointed toddler body with side-hip jointing. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: O made in Germany 18 237 JDK n 1914 c. Hilda ges gesch 1070. Comments: Kestner, circa 1915, their trademark model Hilda. Value Points: especially fine modeling with quality of bisque on the larger Hilda with toddler body having superb antique costume. $1800/2400

21” (53 cm.) Bisque socket head with very plump face, small blue glass sleep eyes, painted eyeliner, curly lashes, incised eyeliner, short feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined shaded lips and well-defined tongue tip and two beaded upper teeth, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, composition and wooden chubby toddler body with side-hip jointing, antique sailor dress and middy, undergarments, socks and shoes. Condition: generally excellent, original body and body finish albeit finish rubbed on left hand. Marks: M made in Germany 16 JDK 220. Comments: Kestner, circa 1915. Value Points: rare to find model with outstanding quality of modeling, especially laughter crinkles and dimples around the mouth and eye corners, original wig, pate, body, great costume. $1600/2200

27. Early Shadowbox Vignette Featuring Winged Angel

24” (61 cm.) x 16” case. 9” angel. A wooden framed shadowbox room with constricted and painted architectural details including fireplace and mantel, painting, wall of books, large window with silk draperies, parquet flooring, and various furnishings. In one corner is posed an angel with carved wooden wings and silk costume, and in the other is a lady seated at small table upon which are arranged various papers and songs. Excellent condition. Early 1800s, a very fine presentation of imaginative and artistic detail. $1200/1500

28. Early German Carved Wooden Hawker with Hinged Action

8” (20 cm.) The carved wooden figure of a man with carved painted costume, bare feet, sculpted hair, is posed upon a wooden platform, with wooden peddler basket attached to his back, in which is preserved a little wooden doll head. When the basket is pushed forward and back, the man’s mouth opens and closes as though “peddling”. Excellent condition. Germany, early 1800s. $500/700

29. Early English Wooden Doll with Dramatically Large Eyes and Early Costume

18” (46 cm.) All wooden doll with one-piece carved head and torso, oval-shaped head with elongated throat, very large enamel glass inset eyes, tiny dot-painted lashes and brows, well shaped nose, firmly shaped lips of closed mouth, modeled bosom, remains of original brunette hair wig, cloth upper arms, wooden lower arms, wooden legs with jointing at hips and knees. Condition: very good, original finish with some darkening, lower arms not original. Comments: English, early 18th century. Value Points: gentle presence attains personality with grand size of eyes, fine original blush on cheeks, and wearing (frail) original costume including wonderful early quilted petticoat, silk shoes, cap and with early pincushion ball on chain. $14,000/18,000

A velvet-covered wooden stage presents a vignette of an elegant lady posed on a stool at her piano, ready for her performance; the lady with bisque swivel head, blue glass eyes, closed mouth, nicely painted features, pierced ears, blonde mohair flowing curls, carton torso and legs, metal hands, is exquisitely costumed in silk and lace. The piano is of fine rosewood with ebonized finish borders and sides, bone and ebony spring-tension keys, and features shaped columns, ormolu two-arm candleholders and side handles, and gilt metal urn with silk flowers. When wound, the lady pianist is designed to move in a realistic manner, turning and nodding her head, and watching her hands on the keys, while her forearms move

sideways across the keyboard, and, independently up and down as her hands approach the keys; meanwhile music plays, four operatic tunes emanate from a 52-note Swiss movement. 13” (33 cm.) x 9” box. A firm-sided box with ogee-shaping is richly covered with padded ivory silk and hand-painted floral accents, and is surmounted by a silkcovered cornucopia with pleated top edge that frames a bisque doll head that is mounted therein; the doll has brown glass eyes, open mouth, two porcelain teeth, and lively expression. The box lid hinges open for its original use as a luxury candy box, and in a hidden compartment is contained a music box which operates from key wind on the underside. Each is allcloth doll with swivel head, hand-pressed and painted complexion, facial features, short brown painted curly hair, pale blue eyes, painted red upper lashes, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, muslin body with discjointing at shoulders and hips. Condition: generally excellent (one wooden shoe missing). Comments: attributed to Bing, who in 1921 created his Kruse-like dolls in an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Kruse dolls; a 1925 lawsuit precluded any further production making the dolls quite rare. Value Points: well-preserved little dolls in fine unplayed with condition, wearing original costumes in fresh bright colors. $400/500
