An Introduction by the Collector

ollecting can be additive and time consuming. But, as I always say, it is also “socially acceptable” and even “socially enhancing.” Getting to know other collectors and families dealing with mom’s or grandmother’s doll collection has added so much to our family’s life over the years. Now when we are downsizing, we pass along some outstanding treasures to the next family. We hope that they enrich your family as much as they have ours.

After you review all these composition and cloth dolls, you might ask “What was the focus of my collection?” My focus started out as Alexander hard plastic dolls of the early 1950’s. After being so confused about the uncataloged years of 1947 to 1952, my focus exploded to all the Alexander dolls along the timeline from the late 1920’s to the 1970’s to understand the evolution of the dolls and its boxes, labels, wrist tags and clothes labels. Dealers teasingly accused me of being more interested in the boxes than the dolls sometimes!

In my collecting experience, the motto that has always proven true is “Collect the very best that you can afford.” Buying superior dolls always pays dividends! But buying superior dolls has to be paired with knowledge to know that the doll is superior. So much of my research time always involved understanding what was correct and what was questionable about any doll. If it was questionable, how do I resolve the questions? Experience is built over time and the best way to gain experience and confidence is to read and study auction catalogs and doll exhibits at national doll conventions. There are hundreds of collectors who more than willing to help educate you in building your collection. I hope that this catalog can serve as an educational resource for collecting Alexander dolls. In any education, a collector has to cross reference information between sources to determine any discrepancies. I am so thankful that Theriault’s agreed to use information from Playthings Magazine in the catalog. This research anchors the facts back to a factual source so that all collectors can benefit.

Another focus of my collection was centered on what was happening in the toy industry at the time and how Madame Alexander responded to those competitive forces. Reading Playthings Magazine at the New York City public library was a fascinating past time at night when I was in New York City on business. I had several extended conversations with Madame Alexander about how she ran the company during the early years and through the 1950’s. Blending business, marketing, history with the dolls that she produced, just made them more real to me. Madame was an exceptional person with an innate entrepreneurial mindset who broke the cultural norms of her day and competed in a man’s business world at the top echelons of the toy industry. Madame never took “no” for an answer and positioned her company to be on the cutting edge of fashion with the best quality and design while focused on the education of young ladies to cultivate their appreciation of the arts and expand their future horizons.

Proper research will give you greater confidence to build a better collection. Additional research and knowledge launched a whole new focus to my collection when I determined that only by understanding the Alexander boxes, labels, clothes tags and wrist tags could you really determine the authenticity of the doll. With that understanding, the evolution of Alexander dolls over the years fall into a pattern so that you then can understand changes in wig construction and changes

During the composition doll production years Madame Alexander introduced the Portrait Series, lady dolls with unique handpainted facial details, elaborate coiffures and superb custom costumes featuring construction details that appeared on no other dolls. This is the 1946 Melanie from the series, #115 of this book. Madame considered the Portrait Series to be the apogee of her work, continuing the models into the Golden Years of the 1950s for which the dolls received Fashion Academy awards.

ou’re unlikely to find an Alexander doll enthusiast who does not know the person – or at least the name – of their fellow collector, Rodney Waller. His passion for the dolls, his appreciation for the unique vision of Beatrice Alexander, and his own curious and intellectual mind have made him a veritable force of nature in the collecting, identifying and preserving of these important American dolls.

eatrice Alexander is a name often ignored in the litany of women who created notable cloth dolls in the early 1900s. In America, for example, following on the footsteps of Martha Chase who created cloth dolls until her death in 1925, there was Louise Kampes whose Kamkins doll was all the rage in Atlantic City during the 1920s and Mollye Goldman whose focus was on the stylish or show costumes created for her cloth dolls. Internationally, the cloth dolls of Kathe Kruse in Germany, Lenci in Italy, and Reynal in France are anxiously sought by today’s collectors. The cloth doll, in fact, has become a major collecting genre for antique doll collectors. So why not the cloth dolls made by Madame Alexander made during this same era? Likely, it is because her later dolls of composition and midcentury plastic, the dolls that earned her prestige at the time, and that command highest prices today, are so favored among collectors that her cloth dolls are overlooked. Which, of course, means that these cloth doll “sleepers” are opportunity for today’s collectors seeking budget-limited opportunity. Yet, the initial creations of Alexander were cloth dolls. These original dolls, made about 1923, were handstitched, painted and costumed “Alice in Wonderland,” lots 149-151 by Beatrice and her sisters, drawing upon their knowledge of dolls and fashion garnered from their father’s doll hospital in New York City. Madame Alexander’s own records indicate that the earliest dolls were “Nurse” or “Red Cross Nurse”. Interestingly, her first registered trademark, August 13, 1930, was for

the cloth doll “Alice in Wonderland”; only 25 years earlier Martha Chase had made cloth character dolls, including Alice, inspired by the Lewis Carroll book, and it is possible that the Chase dolls were known to Beatrice through her father’s doll hospital and had served as source to young Beatrice. At any rate, it is definitely known that Beatrice Alexander was a voracious devotee of literature, and the books that had inspired the young Beatrice, “Little Women,” lot 31 who had arrived in America at the age of one year with her immigrant mother, found their way into doll form from the very beginning of her production. Beginning in the early 1930s, and continuing through-out her life, she created imaginative dolls inspired by storybook characters. In addition to Alice in Wonderland, there were the dolls from Charles Dickens’ novels, David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, Christmas Carol and The Old Curiosity Shop. And there were the Little Women, inspired by the beloved novel of Louisa Mae Alcott, which were among the earliest dolls by the firm, and continued without pause for more than 50 years. Early Hollywood film stars served as inspiration for cloth dolls by Madame Alexander. Two important examples were Katherine Hepburn as Babbie from her role in the 1934 film, The Little Minister, whose hand-painted facial expression bears an uncanny, albeit caricaturelike, resemblance to the 142

beloved actress, and Jeanette MacDonald doll inspired by her role in the 1928 silent film, Rose Marie. As the firm developed, the cloth dolls often took whimsical turns. There was Bobby-Q and his schoolmate friend, Susie-Q; Susie-Q and Bobby-Q Norcross greeting cards, while the circa 1930s illustrator of this delightful pair remains unknown, it is intriguing to note that the pair also appeared in a series of greeting cards by Norcross, and playing cards by the Aarco firm. And later there were Susie-Q and Bobby-Q, lot 67 the wonderful Clarabell Clowns, circa 1951, whose imaginative designs and vibrant colors are compelling when preserved in original condition; the clown was inspired by Clarabell Clowns lots 186-188 the children’s TV show, Howdy Doody, which was released in 1947. And there was Little Shaver doll whose compelling story has intertwining threads of

American women entrepreneurship, growth of American fashion industry, doll design and Beatrice Alexander’s perennial fascination and support of the artist community. Elsie Shaver, who came from a southern ante-bellum family in Arkansas, showed early promise as an artist, enrolling in 1915 at the Chicago Institute of Art and then, “Little Shaver,” lot 180 in 1917, moving to New York with her sister, Dorothy, aiming to support themselves with a commission from Marshall Fields to create art for that store’s catalog. Soon, seeking an idea to further support themselves, Dorothy became intrigued by learning of the money earned by Rose O’Neill for transforming her Kewpie illustrations into doll form, and encouraged her artistic sister Elsie to do the same. By 1919, a whimsical series of five dolls named the “Five Little Shavers” came to be, were patented on March 9, 1920 (#125,516) and, then, through a fortuitous meeting with the president of Lord & Taylor who immediately ordered the dolls, came into such demand that the Shaver sisters rented a loft, hired and trained workers and began production with grand success. Yet, curiously, the shop closed after only three or four years. Dorothy became employed by Lord & Taylor, and rose through the ranks to eventually become the store president, the first female to head a major American department store. And Elsie? She resumed her interest in painting and sometime in the late 1930s created a series of paintings for the Bundles for Britain campaign featuring Victorian children which she named “Little Shavers”. The paintings were hailed by art critics, according to a 1942 article in Playthings Magazine. Among the visitors to a private exhibition of the 144

paintings was Madame Alexander who immediately saw their potential as a doll, and set to work on the project. Soon after, Madame Alexander’s ad in Playthings Magazine proclaimed “Introducing the Little Shaver” inspired by Elsie Shaver, and they were proclaimed the first line sellers at F.A.O. Schwarz, Wanamaker, Neiman-Marcus and other luxury stores. The complete story of the Shaver sisters and their relationship to Beatrice Alexander is not established at this time, yet it is known that both Dorothy Shaver and the Madame were major forces in developing the American fashion industry, and a rare and revealing photograph from the Alexander archives, circa 1940, depicts Madame Alexander standing alongside Elsie Shaver with a group of the “new” Little Shaver dolls and an oil painting of Little Shavers by the artist.* And there were also the amusing cloth animals created by Madame Alexander, sometimes presented as “people animals” in costumed standing poses, and sometimes as actual animals, albeit fancifully decorated. Among the first was the velveteen rabbit, Dottie Dumbunnie of 1938 who was quickly followed by the pressed-cloth Beau and Belle rabbit people of 1940. In 1951 the Alexander firm presented her delightful Posey Pets series, some with detailed people costumes, and others, such as a series of black poodles including the long-lashed lady poodle named ZaZa, decorated with jewelry, monocles and

other whimsical accents that seem more aimed at the lady’s boudoir market than child’s play. And always, the beloved baby doll owned a place of stature for Madame Alexander. In the early 1940s, she presented a very soft and lightweight yarn-haired baby doll marketed as So-Lite, and that it was! The doll is very rare to find today. The Dionne Quintuplet Dolls – and How They Saved the Day for Madame Alexander

very doll is made more enjoyable by knowing its back story. Why was it created? Was it a grand success or not so much? What was its competition? What was happening in world events that inspired the doll maker and added (or diminished) to the demand for the doll? Rodney Waller, a pre-eminent collector and researcher of the iconic American doll firm of Alexander, has spent decades pursuing the back stories of that company’s dolls. In this essay, he explores the grand success story of Madame Alexander’s Dionne Quintuplet dolls. No Madame Alexander doll collection is complete without several examples of the Dionne Quintuplets. In fact, without the Dionne dolls, Madame’s company may not even continued through those difficult years of the 1930s Depression. The dolls came about as a response to the popularity of “America’s Little Darling,” Shirley Temple. Ideal Novelty & Toy Co. had obtained the rights to Shirley Temple dolls in 1934 and was a bigger company Dionne Quintuplets in basket, lot 107 with integrated design, molding, manufacturing, distribution and marketing capabilities compared to Madame’s little production shop and showroom on 22nd Street in

New York City. Hollywood was churning out Shirley Temple movies as quickly as they could and almost the entire globe was demanding Shirley Temple dolls. It was truly a David and Goliath situation. Madame has been quoted several times that Shirley Temple almost put her out of business along with the rest of the doll industry. In March 1935, Madame tried to compete with Shirley Temple with her acquisition of the rights to “Little Colonel,” the famous story book, from the heirs of Anne Fellows Johnston, and her subsequent release of a look-alike Shirley doll named “Little Colonel”. But it had little effect. What to do? It was Madame’s entrepreneurial spirit that drove her to be the first to make a deal with the Canadian Guardians of the Dionne’s for the manufacturing rights of Dionne dolls in the United States. The Dionne’s were born in May 1934 and the world followed their struggle to survive their infancy. Madame got to work and, by March 1935, Alexander was advertising the release of the dolls in time for their first birthday. So popular did the Dionne dolls become that, until this day, they hold the record for variation of styles and sizes in the history of the company. They were made in a myriad of sizes, with wigs or modeled hair, with toddler bodies or baby bodies, with painted eyes or sleep eyes, and dozens of costume variations. The Dionne’s were also the only dolls where Madame sold an extensive line of 147

furniture, playthings and accessories specifically designed for this dolls, ranging from cribs and play pens to an actual carousel. Very early in the marketing of the Dionne’s, Madame created a color scheme for each doll. This added color and eye appeal to the displayed dolls but also differentiated between the five children, and thus creating a greater demand for all the dolls. These were still expensive dolls for the time, and while the goal was selling the complete set of five dolls, they were also offered individually in an effort to meet affordability demands; to this end, early marketing efforts were focused on “picking out your favorite.” Ultimately the Canadian Guardians also began dressing the actual children in differing colors but not the same colors as Madame had chosen. The Canadians Guardians came to the same conclusion that the little girls needed to be “colored coded” so that the thousands of tourists coming to Collander, Ontario to see the Dionne’s each day could determine which little girl they were watching a distance away from the extensive “observation buildings.” For nine years, the

girls were placed on display multiple times a day. Even during the peak of the Great Depression, more than 3 million visitors came simply to watch them from behind a glass mirror. As the girls played together, they could only hear—not see—the viewers, all the while having little contact with their parents, despite them living just across the street. Ultimately, the press announced that more Dionne dolls had been sold than Shirley Temple dolls over the years. Profits and notoriety from the Dionne US exclusive rights moved Madame Alexander from Dionne Quintuplets swana “Doll Stylist,” as she shaped rocker, lot 84 advertised herself in the early 1930’s, to an established doll manufacturer. All the stores and national catalogs wanted access to the Dionne doll line. Madame then could bundle her products and require that not only her Dionne line be purchased but also other assortments of her products giving her a broader distribution and consumer exposure of her product line nationwide… and adding to the financial backbone of her company. Madame Alexander was the constant showman and marketing genius. In preparations for Christmas 1937, Madame arranged a nationwide tour of America for Nurse Yvonne Leroux, the nurse of the Dionne’s almost since their birth. Nurse Leroux appeared before crowds in department stores, luncheons held by women’s clubs attended by the mayor and radio stations. Playthings Magazine stated “The Alexander Doll Co. reports that sales for Quintuplet Dolls reach new peaks wherever Miss Leroux has been, and is looking forward to working in close cooperation with stores in the cities still to be visited.” Without the popularity and success of the Dionne Quintuplets, it is likely that the Alexander doll firm might have perished, and, certainly, would not have had the means to later create the experimental and luxury fashion dolls of the 1940s and 1950s. x 148
