Introduction W

hen we decided to place our collection at auction, one of my key objectives was to create a pictorial research book for collectors while preserving a record of the beauty and depth of the collection from the early 1930’s through the 1970’s. Now with this concluding auction, I believe that we have created three outstanding research catalogs and reference books for collectors. I want to personally thank Theriault’s for documenting the legacy created by Madame Alexander. In this third auction, collectors will see some of the same doll models as in the two previous auctions, yet all of them are different. For example, at one time, I had four 1958 Cissy in the Pink Camellia Gown, model 2283. But they were all different. All four had the same dress and stole but each had a varying hairdo with differing flower placement in the hair. One had a more extensive hairdo with curls drawn back into a gold snood at the nape of the neck; my conclusion was that this doll was a first issue, but Madame concluded that it took too long to fix the hair in this arrangement. Therefore, modifications were made to streamline the process. Although she allowed the factory hair stylists to use their creativity to outdo the other stylists, it needed to be within Madame’s time limit. I suggest that collectors say that this or that doll “traditionally” came with a certain color shoe, or coiffure style, or pattern of fabric, but then explore variations which may be entirely original. After all, if the variations are original, the dolls are very special and rare. The first production run of a doll would been meticulously planned with all of the trims and accessories in stock. By the second run, all the materials might still be in stock, but by the third

production issue, changes would probably occur as some supplies – a piece of trim, a certain fabric pattern - would need to be substituted. So I am never surprised when I find changes in the same doll model number. That is what makes collecting so much fun! I hope that these catalogs help collectors research and study various dolls to be able to notice the variations and where questions need to be asked. So how does a collector become more educated? It takes time and a lot of experience looking at dolls at doll shows, MADC competition exhibits and working with other collectors. Having so many dolls in our collection, we had a large number of opportunities to examine Alexander dolls. You can learn a lot by just looking at several examples of the same model side by side. That is when you can learn about how the eyelashes were painted, the wigs glued on the heads and how the dresses were sewn. A collector needs to understand how Madame Alexander dolls evolved over time so that you can put each doll in a historical context of when the doll was produced. Make your own chart of the vintages of Madame Alexander dolls and take a picture of it so that you can carry it on your phone to look at it if the need arises. Whenever you create a hard and fast rule, be careful. There are so many exceptions. Regular production dolls are beautiful but variations are exceptional! I hope you will continue to enjoy the three volumes that constituted our collection, and that these books might be helpful to you as you choose and build your own collection of the beautiful dolls of Madame Alexander. - Rodney Waller

odney Waller, the inveterate collector of the works of Madame Alexander has generously shared his collection with other admirers of the work of this legendary American dollmaker. When first speaking with Theriaultâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about auctioning his dolls, Rodney had one important criteria: that each doll receive its special place in our award-winning catalogs so collectors, whether bidding or not, could gaze and study and dream. In working with Rodney, I have come to have a particular regard for his vision which is a fruitful blend of historic accuracy and respect for the artistic eye of Madame Alexander. Woe to me if I mis-labeled a model number, but, never fear, because Rodney has always been there to verify and clarify in his inimitable helpful way. And woe to those who do not respect the artistry of these dolls, for Rodney is always ready to point our their amazing virtues, be it the use of luxury fabrics and trims, the experimental use of materials, the extraordinary detail of coiffure. In Rodneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writing, this respect for the works of Madame Alexander is resoundingly clear. There is something else, also, which I have observed over this past year of working with him. That is his admiration for the way in which Madame confronted the special struggles of a woman in the business world. Over and over he describes the problems she encountered, and the fortitude and good will she brought to the fray. It made me admire the woman even more, but it also gave me a special admiration for Rodney for his awareness of this and insistence that others also be aware. This catalog completes the three-volume set of The Rodney Waller Collection of Madame Alexander Dolls. I want to thank Rodney for allowing us to participate in the presentation of his collection. And I have only one wish. That he continue in his research and writing about this signature American company, and, perhaps, along the way, even find another doll or two. 8” (20 cm.) Blonde curly hair, straight-leg walking-style body. Wearing ivory satin gown with crisp tulle overskirt, taffeta panties, socks, side-snap ivory shoes, stiffened net cap with lace ruffle, and carrying little bouquet. 3. Wendy Bride in Ivory Satin Gown with Rhinestone Bodice, 1952 18” (46 cm.) All hard plastic, Margaret face, blonde hair with defined centerpart, her hair pulled back into two pronounced vertical side loops and nape curls. Wearing luxurious ivory satin gown with leg-omutton sleeves, sweetheart neckline and bodice stuffed with rhinestones, along with lace edged tulle veil, floral coronet, slip attached to dress, taffeta panties, stockings, ivory satin front-snap shoes, and carrying bouquet and curler box. The gown is tagged “Madame Alexander, All Rights Reserved, New York, U.S.A.” and she has original Fashion Award wrist tag and original “Wendy” booklet. Excellent condition. 4. “Everybody Loves a Bride” in Ivory Duchess Satin Gown, 1952 18” (46 cm.) All hard plastic, dark brunette hair with curled bangs and sides of hair gathered back into a long pageboy curl at her nape. Wearing rich ivory satin wedding gown with heavily-embroidered lace work at the bodice trimmed with tiny rhinestones, lace-edged undulating veil with floral coronet and matching bouquet, taffeta petticoat and panties, net stockings, garter, cream satin shoes, and carrying original curler case. The gown is tagged “Madame Alexander, All Rights Reserved, New York, USA”. Excellent condition, small holes in veil tulle, with early box (model number is not legible). All composition with brown sleep eyes, real lashes, dark eyeshadow, uniquely painted side lashes and brushstroked brows, red lips of closed mouth, brunette mohair wig in elaborate original coiffure, five-piece body. Wearing ivory/silver long gown with fitted bosom which opens in robe-like fashion at the front, trimmed with double rows of black lace, magenta silk ribbons, and ruffled gilt-accented lace cuffs, cutwork-edged petticoat and pantalets, stockings, black shoes with double ankle straps, elaborate woven bonnet with turned-up side trimmed with an extravagant cluster of pink and red roses and leaves, with satin streamers and black tulle veil, pearl earrings, black lace fingerless gloves, black bead necklace. A TIMELINE OF MADAME ALEXANDER DOLLS By Rodney Waller

Maurice Alexander, the stepfather of the young girl Bertha who would become Madame (Beatrice) Alexander, had apprenticed with a firm in his native Germany in the repair of Dresden figurines and other porcelain items. After immigrating to the US in 1890, he worked with a toy importer, Foulds & Freure, Inc. setting up a business selling new toys and dolls along with selling and repairing antique porcelain and dolls. In 1895, Maurice established his doll hospital which is the same year that Bertha Alexander was born to her widowed mother, Hannah Pepper. After Maurice and Hannah married, the family lived above the doll hospital on Grand Street on the Lower East Side, in the heart of New York’s teeming immigrant community. This melting pot of different cultures and languages along with extreme poverty was the everyday life of Bertha Alexander. She later recounted numerous occasions of seeing the fashionable ladies of New York society and their tearful daughters coming to the doll hospital to repair their broken porcelain dolls. These memories aroused two objectives in her – one, to make a doll that did not break and, two, to better her life to parallel the social status of the ladies who visited her father’s store. Beatrice Alexander loved the luxury items repaired in her father’s store, and it was more than happenchance that in her later years, she surrounded herself with Dresden china pieces and cut glassware. During WWI era, 1914-1918, it was nigh impossible to receive porcelain repair supplies from Germany, so Beatrice and her three step-sisters Rose, Florence and Jean joined forces to create cloth dolls to save her parent’s business. She had graduated from high school with honors and was married a few weeks later on June 30, 1912 to Philip Behrman, and in 1915 and 1918 she bore two daughters, the later who died in infancy in the 1919 Spanish flu epidemic. The first cloth dolls that Beatrice (who had now changed her

name from Bertha) and her three sisters produced around the family’s kitchen table were a baby doll and a Red Cross nurse, to support the theme of the war effort. These dolls of muslin stuffed with excelsior were successful in saving her parent’s business. After WWI concluded, the four sisters continued their “kitchen” manufacturing process, enlisting neighbors who wanted to earn money. Although the original cloth dolls were flat-faced with painted or sewn-on features, the young Beatrice had begun to experiment with a process to add actual nose and cheeks to the face. Using buckram material as a mask, Madame created and continued to improve the “mask” approach where the back of the head was then sewn to the mask. The mohair floss hair or yarn was then glued to the back of head and hair arranged into a final set. Many biographers have drawn parallels to Madame Lenci of Italy with her cloth creation which were coming to the market at the same time in 1919 and, in fact, some scholars suggest that Madame chose to use “Madame Alexander” in her business affairs similar to Madame Lenci. However, it was also common during this time for various doll makers to use the Madame appendage, such as Madame Hendren Dolls. In 1923 with a $1,600 loan, the operations moved from the family’s kitchen table to a studio in downtown Manhattan with better supplies and more laborers. Her sisters were still part of the core group of creating an enterprise, although Beatrice’s specific role was creating ideas for dolls and developing shop accounts to sell their products. In some of the early references to the Company, Playthings Magazine would refer to it as the “sisters.” This is when Madame came face-to-face with business men to negotiate sales and in purchasing supplies. As she needed working capital, Madame was forced to talk to men bankers and convince them to loan money to “a woman” who, by her very nature, was deemed to be a bad credit risk, sometimes toting along her daughter Mildred to add more leverage in the discussions.

This was the beginnings of Madame Alexander dolls from the family’s kitchen table in 1914 to establishing the Alexander Doll Company in 1923. In 1925, Madame convinced her husband, Philip, to quit his steady job with a weekly paycheck at the Adam’s Hat Company in the personnel department to join her and help run and expand the company. The copyright of the novel, Alice in Wonderland, had expired by 1930, whereupon, Madame immediately trademarked the name in hopes of capturing the market on Alice in Wonderland dolls. She apparently was successful. Alice had been made since the late 1920’s as flat-faced with painted features; one example has a red straw hat with matching trim to the bodice of her red dress which is tagged Alice in Wonderland with the 1930 trademark. However, in 1933, an ad in Playthings Magazine for the Madame Alexander Alice doll depicted a re-trademarked version with fully mastered molded features in either muslin or silk base; this coincided with the release of the Paramount movie. TIMELINE OF LATER CLOTH DOLLS, 1951-1953 Posey Pets were manufactured in 1951 with their flower-eyes and noses rather than have been previously dated in the 1940’s, as indicated by their first appearance in Playthings Magazine in January - February 1951 issue. The big news in 1933 were “The Three Little Pigs” from Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony series, the first Walt Disney-authorized exclusive for Madame Alexander. This now required that she create the actual doll, with composition molds to be constructed exclusively for her and with bodies marked “Madame Alexander” to guard against piracy. This was a major change in the Madame Alexander business.

In 1934, Madame was able to step in and take over Tony Sarg Marionettes. Tony Sarg was the world’s premier marionette master and puppeteer. This brought a tremendous amount of publicity and public attention to Madame Alexander. Tony Sarg Marionette Clubs were formed nationwide and large department stores had in store performances leading up to Christmas. TIMELINE OF COMPOSITION BETTY FAMILY DOLLS 1931 - 1942 With all of Madame’s success, the Alexander Doll Company needed its own “name recognized” dolls with exclusive molds used only for Alexander. Philip was charged with the responsibility of sourcing these facilities and calculating how much production was needed to then satisfy the Company’s anticipated Christmas orders. Madame named her Branded Doll “Betty.” The first Betty dolls looked like Ideal’s Patsy with molded hair. The first Little Betty was introduced at Toy Fair 1931 in a 13” size. As the line expanded, Madame created a propriety Betty face mold in 1935 with varying sizes -- Betty, Tiny Betty and Little Betty sizes. Each size had a wide array of styles and some styles were made in all sizes. A product insert found in several Tiny Betty boxes shows products being offered by Madame Alexander and research

continues concerning the effective date of this insert. The “Fiction Dolls”, shown on page 2 of the insert, appear to be Tiny Betty dolls, but all of those dolls were probably not available in 1940 when the “Butch” doll trademark was filed and which is also included in the insert under “Famous Character Dolls”. The “Dolls of the Week” dolls that are shown are referred to as “Wendy Ann,” generally made in 1936-1938. The Little Betty set of “Dolls of the Week” were also made in 1936-1938. On the fourth or back page, the “Doll of the Month Club” were Tiny Betty dolls which were made in 1939-1940. It is likely that any of the dolls in this insert could be ordered by a retail store if requested. Also, this may have been a handout item that the Alexander Doll Company had at their booth at the New York World’s Fair which was held from May 1939 to October 1940 or that were offered by the Macy’s toy area of the World’s Fair; several Little Betty dolls have been located with the Macy’s World Fair label on the box. If this brochure reflects dolls available in 1940, then some of the dolls were offered longer than indicated in the materials above. It is interesting to note that there are some Tiny Betty and Little Betty dolls not in the list that had been offered in prior years. TIMELINE OF COMPOSITION DIONNE QUINTS 1935-1941 Madame Alexander secured the US rights to make the Dionne Quintuplets in early 1935 from the Canadian government who had taken control of the Quints. Head molds needed to be made along with the necessary body parts very quickly and the first ads appeared in mid-1935.

The first dolls produced were the 7 ½” with painted eyes and bent baby legs, the 10 ½” dolls using the Three Little Pigs bodies, the 17 ½” and 23” composition dolls with cloth bodies and composition arms and legs and the So-Lite cloth Dionnes. The 7 ½” dolls came as a set, dressed in diapers and sleep shirts, in a white bed (but without their names on the foot board). The wooden kiddie cars and Merry-Go-Round were also available.

The Wendy Ann face mold that collectors generally attribute to the petite 11” with the swivel hips and sharply bent right arm was introduced to the public in October 1938 Playthings Magazine as “a little girl modelled like any little girl of seven or eight years old. She has a slender body that is willowy and full of grace as any modern little girl should be.” Madame used the face mold and variations of it during most of the composition era, but as the mold adapted to other sizes the face appeared different. By March 1936 the Nurse was added along with the furniture – crib, playpen, high chair, low chair and tricycle and Ferris Wheel. Now, the bed with the five Quints had their names on the foot board and the bed covering was pink. Dr. Dafoe was put on the market in mid-1936. The backstory of his face mold is intriguing. Madame Alexander had originally contracted to create a Spanky doll from the Hal Roach Studio’s “Our Gang” series, and an existing photograph shows Spanky posing with the prototype of this doll which has the head used on the Dr. Dafoe doll! The Spanky contract was signed in October 1934, but the letter agreement is marked “Cancelled.” The Spanky doll was never made, and with that cancellation, the Spanky prototype head became the Dr. Dafoe head in 1936. (The Dafoe head was also used for a Priest, Minister and Doctor in 1937’s line and is seen in other photographs as a possible Tom Sawyer and a Little Boy). In late 1936, the Quint-O-Bile, swan rocker, Lawn Swing and various baskets with assortment of extra clothes were available. The Dionnes So-Lites came in three sizes 12”, 18” and 24”. The composition Dionnes came in four sizes – 11”, 15”, 17”, and 20” with a variety of clothing. By the end of 1936, the Dionnes had morphed to straight legs replacing the bending baby legs. Madame trademarked four names to cover the Dionnes -- TM 374-269 Quins, TM 374-271 Quinties, TM 374-272 Quintuplets, TM 374-274 Qunits. A number of character dolls were produced during the height of the composition period. Although Madame pulled her inspiration from classic novels and poetry such as McGuffey Ana, she found that the public was more influenced by the movies. The May 12, 1937 British coronation turned the two little English princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret, into Temple-like popularity worldwide. Without any licensing, Madame jumped on getting a princess doll (Betty) quickly in the market, and later contracted with the most famous doll sculptor, Bernard Lipfert, to create the Princess Elizabeth face mold which she also use extensively to portray other “little girls”. Further, it seems that Madame did not have exclusive rights to the Lipfert face mold since Knickerbocker’s Snow White appears to have also used the same mold or one similar As Madame wanted her dolls to enrich the learning of little girls; it was only natural that characters from the McGuffey Readers were transformed into Madame Alexander dolls, namely McGuffey Ana and Flora McFlimsy. McGuffey Ana dolls came in five sizes during their production and was endorsed by Good Housekeeping and Parents Magazine. Madame did not use the “e” in McFlimsey in the 1940s but did the 1950s. Although Jeannie Walker was not the first walking doll (indeed, walking dolls had been common in the industry since the 1920s), Madame patented the walking mechanism in 1943 to preserve her rights in the future. Madame created new packaging in 1940 to give the line an updated look. The “Alexander bow box” was trademarked in 1940 and used as a covering paper to her boxes until the emergence of the hard plastic dolls in 1947. Beginning in 1939, manufacturers and department stores began to order greater supplies than necessary to be prepared when and if the US entered the war and materials became restricted. Therefore, 1941 and 1942 were building years for the industry. By the time 1943 rolled around, Madame was producing very few doll models – mainly the military dolls, Jeannie Walker, Sonja Henie and the SoLite cloth dolls. Although a 1942-1943 Alexander Catalog was produced, most of the production was in 1942.

TIMELINE OF COMPOSITION GONE WITH THE WIND DOLLS, 1936-1946

Gone with the Wind and Scarlett O’Hara dolls are almost synonymous with Madame Alexander who was totally absorbed with the drama and conflict depicted in the 1936 Gone with the Wind novel by Margaret Mitchell. She immediately sought rights to produce Scarlett dolls. It appears that the rights she secured were through Macmillan, the publishers of the novel, or Margaret Mitchell since the hang tag with Scarlett on the front states that she had obtained the rights from the copyright owner. Although Madame ultimately obtained rights from MGM to duplicate costumes from the GWTW movie, initially the rights were obtained from Macmillan or Margaret Mitchell. Essentially, if Madame had a doll size, there was a Scarlett in that size. Differing sizes allowed Madame to create different price points with each increasing size doll. The most expensive dolls that Madame created from the novel were Scarlett and Melanie 21” dolls in the 1946 composition portrait series. The first Scarlett doll was, likely, an 11” doll with black human hair tagged “Fiction Doll” which arrived on the market by the 1936 Christmas season in limited numbers. Although the movie rights were sold by Macmillan by the end of July 1936, there was not a lot of time between the book release in early July and sale of the movie rights. Magic Skin Baby Dolls were all the rage in 1941. Madame’s trademark material was called Lov-Le’-Tex. Actually, excluding the three brides in the composition portraits Sets, Madame had always had a bride doll in the line since 1935 when she presented a Tiny Betty bride (note: the above listing does not list the Tiny Betty and Little Betty Brides and Bridesmaids as they appear in those sections separately). The Scarlett O’Hara That Madame Alexander Knew By Rodney Waller

December 15, 1939 was the premier of the film, “Gone with the Wind”. So, in December 2019, movie enthusiasts will mark the 80th anniversary of this legendary film. Madame Alexander collectors will also mark the anniversary since the movie has had a significant impact on the Alexander Doll Company line over the years with its perennial assortment of Scarlett O’Hara dolls and her family members in the production line. Madame started reading the book after breakfast on a Saturday morning and did not come from her room until Sunday, having stayed up all night reading. “She asked Dorothy (her housekeeper) to make her a pot of tea and some toast, and she never put the book down. She barely stopped to eat”. After reading the novel from cover to cover, Madame was convinced that she had to get the rights to transform Scarlett O’Hara into a doll. On that Monday, Madame started in her studio designing the first Scarlett O’Hara doll. MacMillan Publisher’s official printing date of Gone with The Wind was May 1936 although advertising was delayed until June 30, 1936 because the Book of the Month Club had selected it as its July featured selection. It is likely that Madame obtained a copy of the novel during July 1936. The first printing was 10,000 copies, quickly followed by a second printing

of 25,000 copies; growing to 100,000 over a threemonth period. The book was priced at $3.00 which was astounding for that time. In the 1930’s Madame Alexander had already established an arrangement with MacMillan Publishers with the Alice in Wonderland book tie-in, and it is likely that she used her existing MacMillan connections to gain direct access to Margaret Mitchell. There is no known documentation, but Madame reportedly met directly with Margaret Mitchell to obtain the rights to make Scarlett O’Hara dolls. Certainly, some arrangement was made since Madame made Scarlett dolls well before the premier of the movie in late 1939. Likely, the first pre-film Scarlett O’Hara doll was the 11” composition doll with black human hair, costumed in a lace-edged green taffeta jacket, green and white horizontal stripe skirt with a ruffle at the hem and green taffeta bonnet presented in late 1936 or early 1937. The doll was tagged “Fiction Doll /Scarlett/ Madame Alexander New York”. The clothes tag did not say “All rights reserved” or “Rights Pending” as was typical on Madame’s clothes tags. Although Madame borrowed some costume designs from the movie in her later production years and ultimately obtained rights from MGM-Selznick, the 137

Scarlett O’Hara that Madame identified with in the 1936 – 1942 years came directly from the pages of Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone with The Wind. Notably, the 11” composition doll head used on this doll appears to have been developed solely for the Scarlett doll as it did not appear in Alexander’s regular production line. The face was most likely actually sculpted by Madame Alexander herself to achieve the heart shaped face as described in the novel. Most collectors forget that Madame’s artistic pursuits were primarily in sculpture. This sculpting talent was most assuredly encouraged, if not trained, by her stepfather, Maurice, who was skilled in repairing Dresden figures and other decorative art objects. This artistic talent had won her a scholarship for further study in Paris when she was sixteen and just a junior in high school, although a bank failure had prevented her from pursuing this dream. Ultimately Madame used a variety of doll bodies and heads to produce 10”, 11”, 13”, 14”, 16”, 17”, 18” and 21” composition Scarlett O’Hara dolls, primarily with Wendy Ann faces. Madame’s design concepts of Scarlett’s costumes would be interesting to see since she was competing with Walter Plunkett who designed the costumes for the movie. Because Margaret Mitchell was so fond of green and red, both designers used these colors predominantly in their designs. The white rectangular “Scarlett O’Hara Doll” wrist tag with film illustration of Scarlett and Tara on the front, appearing just prior to the movie debut and lasting through 1940, states on the back “Scarlett O’Hara from the Gone with the Wind by Madame Alexander by Special Permission of the Copyright Owners / All Rights Reserved”. Madame trademarked the name Scarlett, but the question remains still: who was the copyright owner – Margaret Mitchell, MacMillan or MGM? In a note from Madame cited in Volume I of Pat Smith’s Madame Alexander’s Collector Dolls,

Madame stated that she submitted her concept for Scarlett O’Hara dolls to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and three days later, received a contract from the studio. However, there is no time context given in the Pat Smith note as to when Madame got the MGM contract. Did Madame get the go-ahead rights from MacMillan to do the “Fiction Doll” and later get MGM’s agreement? Due to the different clothes tags used, it was likely a two-step process. Madame’s reference to getting MGM’s permission in three days seems improbable in the 1930’s, even if it was hand delivered in New York City to an MGM office. People ask what gives the book its universal appeal. Perhaps this is the answer: Margaret Mitchell wrote about real people in real situations and made them come alive. She gave readers characters they could care about. And more than any other, there was the character of Scarlett, who determined that no matter what tragedies befell her – death, war, or poverty – she would triumph. Scarlett was a survivor and a winner, to whom people of all ages and walks of life seemed able to relate. Again, this was still a time of America recovering from the desolation of the Depression. People were looking for hope and redemption. Scarlett delivered both. It was this Scarlett that Madame identified with. Scarlett O’Hara from the pages of the novel WAS Madame Alexander in a parallel life. There are so many aspects of Scarlett from the novel that defined Scarlett’s life that similarly defined Madame’s life. Overall, Scarlett struggled to keep her family alive when the entire world seemed to be against her – war, carpetbaggers, poverty and a land scarred with death and destruction. In Madame’s world, she also felt all the cards were stacked against her. Her day-to-day society told her she didn’t belong in business, being creative or not. Women belonged at home with children, not in business, just like Scarlett did not belong in the general store and sawmill. Madame had already been forced to give up her dreams of studying in Paris after graduation from high school. Then 138

the pressures of the times forced her to conform to the expectations of society – marriage, just a few weeks after graduation, and then children. All of her artistic aspirations were set aside until World War I threatened her family’s well-being and Madame conceived of the idea of making cloth dolls to sell in her father’s shop. Just as the Civil War had forced Scarlett as the oldest child into becoming the champion for the family’s survival, Beatrice Alexander was forced as the oldest child into saving her family’s business and well-being. Scarlett had moved from wealth to poverty but was determined to regain her position in society. Madame was determined to raise her standing in society, to be like the ladies who brought their damaged fine art objects for repair. Death seemed to be in every chapter of GWTW. Death had not spared Madame Alexander’s life either. Her father and the older children died just before her mother, Hannah Pepper, had migrated from Russia to the US to escape vicious extinction programs. Hannah was pregnant with Bertha, Madame’s given name, when Hannah arrived in America. After she married, Madame changed her name from Bertha to Beatrice, since it was “more sophisticated”. This creation of sophisticated names also has parallels in the novel. Bonnie Blue’s actual name in the novel was Eugenie Victoria Butler, named after two queens. Scarlett’s second child with Frank Kennedy was named Ella Lorena; “Ella for her grandmother Ellen, and Lorena because it was the most fashionable name of the day for girls”. (This second child was not included in the movie). Scarlett, as presented in the novel, led a more difficult life than in the movie which glamorized her. Madame, too, understood the trials of being a mother with small children and having to support the entire extended family. Madame was already married when she undertook this task and was pregnant since her first child was born in 1915 so Madame knew the emotional pain and stress of being pulled in two directions at the same time.

Additional parallels in Madame’s and Scarlett’s lives abound. In Gone with the Wind, Scarlett insisted that Ashley come in to run the sawmill and lumber business because it was “unseemly” in the public eye for Scarlett to be running a business. In real life, Madame urged her husband, Philip, to quit his three jobs to join the doll business as the “head” of the firm; he had been head of personnel at the Adams Hat Company and also selling hats at another store on Saturday and a third one on Sunday. Quitting his job raised the stakes for the family, now the company had to succeed! Movie goers forget that Scarlett at the barbecue was only 16 years old. Therefore, both Scarlett and Madame Alexander married essentially at age 17 to older men. Margaret Mitchell was a fourth-generation Irish immigrant. Scarlett was similarly an Irish immigrant and the novel clearly shows the derogatory language directed at Irish immigrants. Madame similarly was subjected to anti-Semitic attitudes in the business world. This is just another parallel that Madame could see between her life and Scarlett’s. I wonder if Madame and Margaret Mitchell ever met personally? Did she get the rights to Scarlett, a fiction character, directly from MacMillan or did she meet with the author herself? In 1936, Margaret Mitchell would have been 36 years old and Madame was 41; so essentially both women would have been contemporaries. Although Ms. Mitchell was largely known for being a tomboy growing up, I am sure that she was acquainted with Madame Alexander dolls especially from the notoriety of the Dionne Quintuplets starting in 1935. Ms. Mitchell’s mother, May Belle Mitchell, was president of the Atlanta Woman’s Suffrage League in 1915 and a strong suffrage supporter. Each woman was struggling with creating their own identity in world overshadowed by men. The Gone with the Wind novel had an immediate and emotional impact on Madame Alexander; not only on the turmoil of Scarlett fighting off all the obstacles placed in her path, but also in the way 139

each would use their charms to win. In the novel, Scarlett is a southern belle, personally charming with sophisticated social skills, “though not beautiful” as described in the novel. In the American Legend book, Mildred and her grandson, William Birnbaum, recounted that on several occasions Madame would take little Mildred as a child with her to visit local bankers about financial arrangements so that she could get sympathy when negotiating with her male counterparts. Scarlett was known for her tenacity as well as her femininity. Madame also saw those as strong attributes of herself. At conventions, she was notorious for going up to ladies and making comments about how that they needed to keep up their appearance to “keep their husbands interested”. In the American Legend book, Mildred, her daughter noted that her mother “saw herself in Scarlett. I personally couldn’t see it, but she definitely did”. There in the middle of all the male toy executives at a Doll Manufacturers of New York Association banquet sits Madame Alexander. Not on the sides, but in the middle so that all would know that SHE was there and she was doing it

better than anyone else. The picture portrays how outnumbered Madame was in her day to day life in business. Her entrepreneurial spirit created one of the most renowned doll companies in America. Her accomplishments were uncomfortable for a male dominated society. It was so painful, that her husband, Philip, had to quit his job at the hat company to become the “figure head” of the company while Madame created the business. All the salesmen at the Alexander Doll Company during this time were men. Men controlled the financing and factories that she had to work with on a daily basis. At her birthday party given by MADC in Bal Harbor Florida in 1985, she acknowledged a commercial banker in the audience, a friend of her husband, who gave her the first loan to move from the kitchen table to a warehouse facility. She paid back that first $5,000 as soon as she could because he didn’t believe in her vision. “However”, she said, “I kept him as a friend so that he could see how much money he lost by not believing in me”. As Madame always said, “You need to believe in people’s dreams, especially women’s”. x
