A Tribute to the Lady I

have always been in awe of the extraordinary body of work created by Madame Alexander. But once I determined to part with my collection and began the process of bringing these treasures out from the boxes and closets where they had been primarily stored for preservation sake, I was visibly reminded at how beautiful the dolls are, from the carving of the classic Margaret face mold to the exquisite fabrics and trims, all in the proper scale. Madame’s insistence on quality and details have proven the test of time with collectors.

made products to America, Madame recruited her three step-sisters to help make cloth dolls for sale at their father’s doll hospital and antique store to keep his business viable. In her twenties, she changed her name to “Beatrice,” a more romanticsounding name, yet, ever the practical woman too, she focused on creating her simple cloth dolls to gain financial footing in the hard-knuckle business world. Ultimately, she was so successful that her husband, Philip Behrman, had to quit his job at a men’s hat store to take over as president of the Alexander Doll Company, as it was not socially acceptable that a woman could be in charge of such a successful business. Meanwhile, she turned her attention to the product line. She needed to determine what the market wanted, what was missing in the market and what she wanted to produce. Madame reflected on her own life and realized that what she wanted was to broaden the education of young girls. Soon, thereafter, dolls exhibiting the arts and literature appeared. In another example, many say that the Red Cross Nurse was one of Madame’s first cloth dolls. Why had Madame chosen the Red Cross Nurse? It was the war effort and the Red Cross Nurse was a woman of action, determination and resilience, the type of woman that she admired.

But my biggest admiration of Madame Alexander is for her entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity to succeed in spite of the barriers created by society and the business world to which she aspired. Bertha Alexander Behrman was born in 1895. Her father died when she was a toddler. Her mother, Hannah Pepper, remarried to Maurice Alexander and added three more daughters to the family. Even in the beginning, Madame lived in unaccustomed circumstances. She was a very talented artist and won awards in school at Washington Irving High School in New York. Her plans were to go to Paris and study art, but family financial reversals prevented her from going. So she did what most young girls did at the time, marry and have children. Yet, while Madame proceeded on that traditional path, she yearned for something more.

Madame was at the right place at the right time for pushing the societal norms. Who would be better prepared to address what young mothers wanted for their daughters than a mother with artistic ability and desire to expand the horizons of young girls? When

Madame entered the business world, she was determined that no one was going to hold her back. Learning from her step-father the insights from running a business and experiencing the effects first hand when negative financial reversals happen, Madame knew she had to do more to compete than anyone else. In pondering how to maintain a market image and brand, Madame chose quality, cuttingedge style and creativity. She leveraged off the publicity of movie and cartoon features to create her dolls. She quickly adapted to the industry and started trademarking doll names and concepts to keep the competition at bay. When Ideal Doll Company secured the rights to Shirley Temple dolls, whose popularity was overwhelming, Madame moved swiftly to secure the US rights to the Dionne Quintuplets. She read “Gone with the Wind” in one sitting and then immediately contacted Margaret Mitchell to secure the rights to produce Scarlett O’Hara dolls, even prior to the movie rights being secured by MGM. Scarlett became a staple in the Alexander line for decades. Madame identified with the tenacity and determination of Scarlett because, in many senses, she had lived those same experiences in her life. After World War II, changes in manufacturing began to be explored. Dow Chemical partnered with Madame to create new materials in doll production. It was her financial success in the 1930s and early 1940s that allowed the Alexander firm to absorb the initial startup costs and revamping of this revolutionary manufacturing process. Further, the postwar years opened up new clothing styles and fabrics which fell right into Madame’s love of fashion designing. This revolution in fashion is most visible by noting the dramatic change in Princess Margaret Rose fashions between 1949 and 1950. The first hard plastic dolls had the look of a streamlined Godey fashions but, soon after, became light and airy chiffon fashions. The public demanded more, and

Madame supplied them. The so-called pink brides were cutting-edge fashion. Innovation after innovation was created with the Glamour Girls and Shadow series. Walking dolls and changes in wigs quickly followed. The public applauded the introduction of Alexander-Kins in 1953 and then, with the appearance of Cissy in 1955, Madame hit her stride with the creation of truly high society fashion. Madame’s secret was shopping in the New York fashion district for left-over runs of high-quality fabrics that first showed up in the Cissy fashions and later in costumes for Elise, Cissette and AlexanderKins. No fabric was wasted. In 1953, the Coronation dolls and exhibit at A&S department store was a pinnacle, not only of superb dolls, but also of publicity. Gaining national recognition on television was a major marketing coup for the Alexander Doll Company. Always thinking of how to better compete in the doll industry, Madame also developed her own Movietoon news reel to promote her dolls in theaters. Madame Alexander never abandoned her dual role as ambassador of beautiful dolls and as a leader in promoting the rightful place of women in industry and the arts. Her struggles were surely wearisome, but faltering was not an option. There is a well-known photograph in Playthings Magazine of a benefit dinner given a retiring male executive in the toy industry. The dining room is full of men executives and sitting there right in the middle of the room is Madame Alexander. She is the only woman in the mist of all the men and her presence is striking. I hope you enjoy viewing this collection of beautiful and rare dolls from the golden age of the Alexander firm. 8. Exceptional “Story Princess” Doll in Original Box, Exclusive for ZCMI Department Store of Salt Lake City, 1948 15” (38 cm.) Cascading curled floss brunette wig with a floral headpiece. Wearing tagged multitiered white organdy ruffled gown, attached slip, and matching panties, long ribbed knit white stockings, white side-strap shoes with floral detail and Story Princess wand attached by blue satin ribbon. Near mint condition. Alexander, 1948, the model was based on the Arlene Dalton Chapin character of “Story Princess” for KSL radio program and later for a children’s TV program based in New York City. This particular variation was a 1000 doll custom store order from ZCMI of Salt Lake City and includes her custom gold store booklet and original store gold box with Alexander Doll Company label on inside of the box lid. $1800/2200

oll research may be fascinating way to pass your time. But exacting research on a “non-exacting” subject can be frustrating. How do you become an “expert” when subject matter can be “random” at times? Such is our struggle in documenting Madame Alexander dolls. Listening to the judges in the MADC convention competition room, I always pause when someone states, “that doll always came with white shoes on that outfit.” I could just imagine Madame and her sewing staff laughing. Because, although Alexander collectors view Madame’s dolls in exact terms as to fabric and choice of shoes and hats, it’s important to remember that Madame was in the business of doll manufacturing. She didn’t get paid until the dolls were shipped! So when a little Alexanderkins was waiting on those white shoes and none were available, someone in the dressing department would put on some black shoes and away the little Alexanderkins went! Even in her catalogs, Madame stated that fabrics might change from those shown. For so many years, Madame’s dolls were in such demand that no store really questioned the merchandise they received. The stores were just glad to get a shipment! Department store buyers were never the one who were sticklers over the details unless someone complained or the doll didn’t sell well.

I want to pay tribute to all those authors who struggle to give some structure to our Madame Alexander doll documentation. I respect their efforts and the vast majority of their work gave us a standard to compare our present findings as more examples are available to compare and study. I am so grateful to Pat Smith and all her efforts to document Madame Alexander dolls. Yes, some of the pictures aren’t so good and they are black and white, but I don’t know how many times I have to refer back to Pat Smith because she is the only available source. One of the latest books that I was thrilled to get was “The Cissy Files” written and edited by Kiley Shaw and the members of Project Cissy. I loved the book and the beautiful pictures, and as a box and catalog guru, I’ve enjoyed matching the dolls in my mind with their catalog numbers. Also, a whole new world opened up to me when I started researching Playthings Magazine at the New York City library. Playthings Magazine is another source to triangulate with the various books to gain insight and some refinements in Madame Alexander doll documentation. My gratitude goes to Ann Bergin for documenting the correct names of the 1951 Mystery Dolls based upon comments on the back of photographs in the Alexander Doll Company archives; this was first reported in Issue 4 of the 2016 Review. Thanks is also extended to Bruce deArmond who found and published in the Review the missing back page from the 1960 Alexander catalog reprints showing the six Cissy Portraits of that year. Now for the first time, these dolls can be known with their correct names. Since these dolls were manufactured late in the Cissy period, 1955-1962, they are much more intricately designed since the dolls were targeted specifically for the doll collector market by this time.

THE MISSING “E” BOXES – From years of research and having a large collection of Alexander dolls that are mint in box, I’ve been able to see the evolution of Alexander dolls over the years just from the boxes and labels. Dating the dolls is easier when you can recognize the labels, wrist tags and boxes as they change. Looking at a mintin-box doll, it becomes somewhat obvious where a particular doll should fit for the date of manufacture. For example, an important clue in researching the early hard plastic models is the missing “e” in the Alexander weave boxes from 1948 to 1953. We know that along with the introduction of hard plastic dolls in 1948, Alexander had a major change in its boxes, labels and wrist tags. The boxes for the hard plastic dolls were covered in a new paper design that I call the “Alexander Weave” print, as the words “Madame Alexander” are printed in a lattice work pattern in pink and green ink with a flower and three leaf design disbursed among the open spaces. This lattice work style was used from 1948 into the 1980’s although the box construction changed periodically. But there was one unusual feature of the 1948 – 1953 boxes - the “e” in “Madame” is missing in both the box pattern design and the box label! Curiously, during this same time, the “e” is present on the wrist tags and clothes tags. It is unusual for Madame to miss such a detail but the missing “e” was also common in her advertising during the 1930’s and 1940’s. One thing we do know is that Madame Alexander didn’t throw anything away, but kept using all her materials until she ran out and then ordered more. Therefore, we note from our box and label research that the “e” started re-appearing on the boxes and labels in

1953, primarily with the production run of the coronation dolls which would have been early in the 1953 doll production. FASHIONS OF THE CENTURY DOLLS – PRODUCED IN 1951 Now, let’s use that knowledge and date when the Fashions of the Century dolls were produced. Luckily, I have two Fashions of the Century dolls both in their original boxes, #6023 and #6018. Both boxes have the missing “e” in the weave and label. Therefore, the dolls could not be produced in 1954 as shown in Pat Smith’s first book. In addition, if the dolls were produced in 1953 or 1954, they would probably be walkerstyle dolls since that was the dominate style for those years. Still more clues to dating the Fashions of the Century dolls concerns their wigs. The first hard plastic dolls used floss wigs which were essentially woven mohair wigs; for example, the first Little Women produced in 1948 and 1949 had floss wigs. 1950 is a transition year with most of the dolls still having floss wigs. But if you look at the Fashions of the Century doll’s wig, you will see that it is a blend of silk and cotton which was the same as used on Cinderella of 1951. Lia Sargent confirms, based on her discussions with Al Weintraub, Alexander’s production manager from 1946 – 1986, that the Fashions of the Century dolls were conceived and designed as a commemoration of the Mid-Century Exposition in 1950 and manufactured in 1951. Since we don’t have absolute research anchors during these periods, it is harder to track changes in materials and molds definitively, but these clues are so important in a path toward dating our dolls year by year. 1951 was a big year since this is the year that the Mystery Dolls were produced and the Alexander Doll Company first won the Fashion Academy Gold Medal Award. The Fashion Academy Gold Medal seal, appearing as a wrist seal tag or box seal, is also a key to identifying when dolls were produced. The use of seals began during 1951 and continued through early 1954. The Fashion Academy organization closed during 1954. Details about other Alexander dolls are important based on continuing study with new research tools; research should always be based on “state of the art” information with thanks to past scholars for their work based on materials available to them at the time. Here are a few updated facts and dating hints for our doll research. MARY MARTIN DOLLS – FROM “SOUTH PACIFIC” Pat Smith, in her 1978 book, incorrectly attributed the first Mary Martin doll in the white dress with either red or green velvet ribbons from the film Show Boat. Now, with access to

in 1955. It is such a spectacular doll that surely some collector has found it in some store’s catalog as an Alexander special. Another example is Cissy in the black wool suit with the pink flower hat having box label number #2119. I have dated her in 1957 which is the number sequence for that year. This is also true with Alexanderkins. Madame, for some reason, changed her catalog numbers from year to year even if the doll was the same. An excellent example is my completely original 1954 first year Little Women Alexanderkins that were all purchased at the same time, even with the same store price tag on their boxes. And each box is labeled #587 which conforms to the sequence numbers of the other first issue 1954 dolls. Then, the same set appeared in 1955 on the cover of that year’s catalog pamphlet with the number of #479! Because I have the original boxes, I have documentation that the dolls in my collection are the sought-after first year issue. Cissy dolls from the 1960 Alexander catalog.

the back cover of Playthings Magazine of May, 1950, we can see that the correct attribution should be South Pacific which was the long-running musical on Broadway at the time. GREEN STRING OF 1951 – Another interesting dating hint is Madame Alexander’s use of green string for a period of time during the early hard plastic period. In my research, every time I find green sting used to tie on wrist tags, the dolls were produced in 1951. But not all wrist tags were tied with the green string; some still were tied with pink string. I wonder why? The Mary Martin dolls were all generally tied with green string since most of the dolls were actually produced or shipped in 1951. Most of the Posey Pets of 1951 also were tied with green string. So the next time you see thick green string tying on a wrist tag, check other features along with this clue and see if the doll is from 1951.

I would love to build an inventory of catalog number of dolls during the 1947 to 1951 where we don’t have Alexander catalogs. Developing that database would answer a lot of questions as to what dolls were produced each year. Of course, the problem occurs that many dolls during this time were produced over multiple years. I know the confusion I have dating my three 21” McGuffey Anas in the red and black velvet coats and bonnets and the five other 14” McGuffey Anas in various costumes. Traditional research knowledge dates the first 21” doll in 1949. However, my 21” McGuffey Ana in black velvet comes with her fashion academy medallion wrist tag which would date her in 1951. Therefore, the doll in limited numbers from 1949 through 1951. Maybe she came in a different color each year?

TOP HAT FOR GROOM OR WINSTON CHURCHILL – I was always told that if a Groom had a top hat, then it was Winston Churchill. But, my two mint in box Grooms both have top hats, and I have been at a lost to find a doll labeled Winston Churchill with or without a top hat. It appears that Grooms came with and without top hats.

Remember that 21” hard plastic Margaret and Maggie faced dolls were produced in very limited numbers due to their expense, and for only six years, 1947-1952. So when you see a 21” hard plastic Margaret and Maggie doll, you already know that the doll is RARE even before you get to costume or hair style. In 1953, when Alexander introduced a 25” Winnie, the last of any large Margaret and Maggie-faced hard plastic dolls were closed out. In my opinion, Margaret-faced dolls are the utmost classic of the golden age Alexander hard plastic dolls followed closely by the iconic Cissy dolls.

Catalog numbers are important, I have found, because you can often date a doll according to the sequence of the catalog numbers, especially for those dolls not shown in the Alexander catalogs. This is especially true for Cissy dolls. I can report that the rare and unusual Cissy in the Red Brocade ¾ length dress with a feather hat is numbered #2096. With that number, I have dated the doll

I hope these research refinements help collectors improve their research process that we can build on in the future. Many of these research techniques can be used with other Alexander categories of dolls. I hope this article will challenge each collector to more critically examine and review their collections for those hidden gems that add so much to our knowledge of Alexander dolls. x
