he outstanding auction of antique dolls is featured in this

wonderful catalog, “Blithe Heart, Dancing Beneath Wool” which is highlighted by the antique doll collection of Marilyn Bard of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, whose superb portrait Jumeau bébé, shown on the cover, is wearing its original Scottish coarse-woolen costume. It is this beautiful doll that has inspired the auction title from the writings of Edwin Hubbel Chapin, the 19th century American author and orator who wrote “The bosom can ache beneath diamond brooches; and many a blithe heart dances under coarse wool”. Also featured are dolls from the collections of the late Laura Weiner of Washington state, Part I of the collection of the late Marilyn Parsons of Louisiana, and selections from the Swiss collection of Madame X. x

Comments: French, circa 1865, the poupée was presented in the luxury doll store of Simonne on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, an indication of its illustrious pedigree. Of very sturdy paper mache with painted finish to realistically depict an alligator hide, the figure has hinged jaw, ferociously sculpted rows of teeth, bulging glass eyes, sculpted ribs and hide, and sculpted claws. A mechanism within the alligator creates a series of realistic movements: when wound, the alligator moves forward in a complicated slithering manner allowed by the linen-wrapped jointing at the neck and mid-torso and by multiple jointing of the tail, while the jaw opens and closes in a synchronized manner with blinking eyes. She wrote of this in The Fascinating Story of Dolls by Janet Johl (1941), “In the summer of 1920 I landed in New York City...I gave myself six months time to put over my idea. When hand wound at the side, the drum beats rat-a-tat-tat, while the little boy moves his arm, tapping Pierrot on the head, and Pierrot pops up and down. An early 1900s French schoolroom with dolls, furnishings and accessories is presented, comprising nine bisque head dolls including the 16” teacher (SFBJ model 25), and eight students. One 14” student is marked “Dep”, one 15” is SFBJ model 233, and six other 14” students represent various other character models from SFBJ art series, including

3 ½” (9 cm.) x 4 ½” inside dimensions. The elaborately woven cap is decorated with braided blue and ecru wool yarn, blue velour striping, and thick velour tassels. The very firm skull-shaped cap was designed to protect the head of a young child learning to walk. Excellent condition. French, circa 1865, an especially fine example. $300/500
