4. Grodnertal Wooden Doll as “The Doll Peddler” 10” (25 cm.) The carved wooden doll with painted black hair and facial features, large blue eyes, defined nose, jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, wearing antique peddler costume. Condition: generally excellent, glass dome is repaired. Comments: Grodnertal, circa 1880. Value Points: the peddler lady holds a wooden tray that offers more than 35 tiny porcelain and wooden dolls; the doll is preserved on wooden base under glass dome. $800/1200
5. English Doll Costumes with Queen Victoria Provenance 19” (48 cm.) x 16” frame. 9”h. costumes. Presented under glass in a wooden frame are two white cotton hand-stitched doll garments, each with ink-lettered note, one indicating “5 yrs and 2 months” and the other “5 yrs and 5 months”. An old type-written paper under the glass indicates that the costumes were “handsewn by Queen Victoria” at these young ages. Excellent condition. Mid1800s. $300/500

6. Early Miniature Slant Front Chippendale Desk 6” (15 cm.) h. x 5 ½”w. x 3”d. Of very fine burled cherrywood, the desk features a slant drop front with keyhole (key not included), which hinges open to reveal six tiny drawers and a tiny niche, above three full width drawers, and with bracket feet. 7. Fine Early English Wooden Doll from the Lord and Lady Clapham Series 16” (41 cm.) One piece carved wooden head and torso, well-sculpted facial features with defined chin and cheek bones, elongated throat, painted pale complexion, two black upper glancing eyes painted with two tiny eye dots in each, painted single line brows with “dot” fringe, closed mouth with primlyset lips, rouged cheeks, pronounced beauty spots, remnants of hair wig sewn to linen cap, wasp-waist, linen upper arms, carved wooden lower arms with separately-carved fingers, wooden legs with dowel-jointing at hips and knees. Condition: original finish with some light nose scuffing, limbs rubbed. Comments: English, late 1600s. A series of dolls with remarkably similar expressions and construction and decorative details were accomplished, likely by the same English craftsman, and likely on commission for British aristocracy. Other dolls from this series include Lord and Lady Clapham at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Lady Elton from the Estrid Faurholt book (featured on the cover of her 1967 Book of Dolls and Dollhouses, and later featured in the Legoland Museum of Antique Dolls). Value Points: an extremely rare find, the remarkable doll has original finish, and is wearing elements of her original costume including soutache embroidered petticoat with coin pocket, tacked-on socks and silk twill slippers. $8000/11,000

Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisqueheaded doll with a blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, lushly-painted lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing bronze-silk dress with ribbon trim, matching shoes, lace-edged matching bonnet, holding a feathered-edged fan in her right hand, and a miniature book of Fables in her left hand. When wound, she turns her head side to side, and alternately fans herself, and then lifts her book as though reading, while music plays. 11. All-Original French Musical Automaton “Little Girl with Basket of Flowers and Surprise” by Leopold Lambert 19” (48 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque head doll with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted lashes, dark eyeliner, rose-blushed eye shadow, brushstroked and feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing original gold silk dress with elaborate trims, matching silk cap and slippers, and with an attached wicker lidded basket connected to her internal mechanism by a metal rod to her torso. She appears to hold the basket, and when wound, music plays, and she turns her head side to side, and alternately blows kisses with her right hand, and lifts the basket lid with her left hand, revealing a nest of flowers and a little bird which flits back and forth. The gilded bronze cabinet with elaborately sculpted legs and back decorative railing centered by a figural winged cherub, has a hinged lid which opens to an interior compartment, and with enamel porcelain scene on the lid depicting a man in 18th century style costume who is pushing a winter sleigh with swan head, in which is riding a woman in fur-trimmed winter wear. When wound, music plays, and the little girl turns her head side to side, nods, lifts a little bouquet of flowers toward her face, and, periodically, the feathered bird flits back and forth. 110. The Dentzel’s Children’s Carousel from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art 56” (142 cm.) h. x 92” diam. The child’s sized carousel features four fiberglass animal rides including dog, rabbit, horse and pig, each with elaborate merry accessories, arranged upon a base with four metal rods, speakers, cassette player and motor, and with a centerpose of mirrored glass. There are six “star” stanchions of metal and wood, a “fish ring” catch with metal rings, and a canvas top with lights. The base measures 16” x 86”, the center post is 73”h. x 12” diam., and the top is 40” x 92” diam. The total weight is 600 lbs.

The carousel was first exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in December 1974 as part of the “Carousel Christmas” exhibition, a loan from Marion and William Dentzel, he being the grandson of Gustav A. Dentzel, the carousel maker from Kreuznach, Germany who came to American in the mid-1860s. The carousel, produced by the Dentzel firm in the mid-1900s, remained at the Museum after 1974, only brought out for the Christmas exhibition year after year until 2000. A remarkable carousel, in desirable child size, with delightful animals, and with provenance from the Dentzel family and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Comments: the American inventor, Thomas Edison, presented his phonograph about 1890, and to inspire its widespread use, he encouraged its use in a wide myriad of objects; a “talking doll” was one of these objects and for that purpose Edison used German bisque doll heads and limbs; in this present case, a bisque head by Bahr and Proschild.
