The Automata Collection of Gail Cook Foreword by Florence Theriault Featuring the extraordinary collection of French automata from the notable Gail Cook Collection, carefully sought and acquired over 30 years. Her connoisseur’s eye sought rarities with four criteria: rarity (in some cases, only one or two of the remarkable pieces are known to exist), splendid music and imaginative motion; superb presentation of costuming; and a centering bisque doll figure with a gorgeous portrait face. Her goal was remarkably achieved. The collection includes the remarkable 31” “Lady Magician”, “Lady Juggler” and “Lady Shepherdess” with surprise hidden in her market basket by Roullet et Decamps, “Organ Grinder with Dancing Dolls” and “Little Girl with Theatre and Dancing Dog” by Vichy, among other grand size rarities. There is the gorgeous portrait lady reclining on a recamier, a dainty little girl seated with amusing toys, a grand-size waltzing couple, and an elegant society lady who peers through her binoculars. Notable faces among the prestige 19th century automata were the exclusive art character model commissioned from Jumeau. Significant in the collection is the 27” “Whistler” designed with the Jumeau 205 art character face; the automaton, when wound, merrily tilts to and fro whistling “Bicycle Built for Two”, the popular tune introduced in 1892, the same year that the automaton was presented. Other automata in the collection with Jumeau art character faces include the crying girl with broken Polichinelle toy, and the laughing child with birdcage and berries. The collection goes on and on, and is extraordinary in every way. x

3. Very Fine Early Wooden Cabinet with Gilt Decorations and Chintz Lining 23” (58 cm.) h. 11”. l. 6”d. The solid wooden cabinet with glass front door has arched crown, single drawer, and shelved interior. The cabinet is lined with fabric chintz, and has black ebony finish with painted gold frame and drawer, painted gilt floral designs on crown and drawer front, and gilded Chinoiserie scenes on the sides. The shelved interior is filled with folded linens wrapped with blue ribbons and with paper labels, and with porcelain wash pitcher. Excellent condition. French, late 1800s, an especially luxe and well-appointed doll furnishing. $1100/1500

4. French Bisque Poupée by Leon Casimir Bru with All-Wooden Deposed Body 1. Petite French All-Bisque Mignonette Holding Tiny Bonnet Doll 5” (13 cm.) Solid domed bisque swivel head on bisque torso, large cobalt blue enamel eyes, painted lashes, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with richly-painted lips, blonde mohair wig with long mohair braids, peg-jointed bisque arms and legs, painted white stockings and blue two-strap heeled shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1882, the petite mignonettes were presented as “poupées de poche” (pocket dolls). Value Points: especially pretty mignonette has beautiful painting, original wig, costume, and is carrying a little all-bisque miniature with sculpted ruffled-edge bonnet. $600/900

2. Beautiful French Bisque Poupée with Gentle Smiling Expression by Leon Casimir Bru 17” (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate, narrow blue glass inset eyes with darker blue outer rims, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with gently upturned lip corners in enigmatic smile, outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig in elaborate coiffure, cork pate, kid poupée body with square-cut collarette, gussetjointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F (head) G (shoulderplate). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, the distinctive portrait model was deposed by him in 1872 and is considered an apogee of his designs. Value Points: the very beautiful poupée has original very sturdy and clean body, finest quality

Bisque swivel head on kidedged bisque shoulderplate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, ears pierced into head, blonde mohair wig with interwoven ribbon and long braid, cork pate, allwooden body with dowel-jointing at shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles, well-defined fingers and toes, ball-swivel waist. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (illegible letter at back of head). Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1867, the year in which this body model was deposed by Bru, inspired by the classic 18th century mannequin body; this facial model was their premier smiling model. Value Points: rare and beautiful poupée with original wig, perfectly preserved condition of rare body with artistic carving, partial original boutique paper label on torso. Bisque socket head with very plump rounded facial shape, almondshaped blue glass enamel inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over Steiner pate, Steiner composition fully jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 0. Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1875. Value Points: beautiful gentle-faced bébé with most delicate bisque, innocent-looking bright eyes, original wig, pate, body and body finish, lovely antique silk costume, socks, leather shoes with original boutique label, woven bonnet. $4800/5800

6. Extremely Rare and All-Original French Musical Automaton with Bisque Portrait Lady by Roullet et Decamps 22â&#x20AC;? (56 cm.) Standing upon a green velvet-covered base is an elegantly-costumed bisque portrait lady of society, having slender bisque head with well-defined chin and cheeks, elongated throat, blue glass inset eyes, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig, paper mache lady-shaped body and and shapely legs, metal hinged upper arms, bisque forearms. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890. When wound, music plays and a wonderful series of synchronized movements occur, suggesting the high society lady is enjoying a day at the races. As the lady lifts her binoculars to her face, the veil on her bonnet raises; then, as her arm lowers, the veil lowers. Having presumably spotted her winning horse, she excitedly taps her parasol six times on the floor. Value Points: the exquisite portrait bisque face perfectly accentuates the presentation, with very lavish original lace costume, on the extremely rare automaton of which no other models are known to exist. $18,000/25,000

7. French Bisque Bébé Jumeau in Original Jumeau Dress 15” (38 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brushstroked brows, rose-blushed eyeshadow, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair braided wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 6 (head, and artist checkmarks) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1886, Value Points: lovely wide-eyed bébé has original body and body finish, and wears original Jumeau silk dress, with Jumeau earrings, antique undergarments, socks, leather shoes, and woven straw bonnet. $3200/4500

8. Extremely Rare French Bisque Musical Automaton “Elegant Lady Reclining on Recamier” by Lambert

19” (48 cm.) h. seated upright x 24”l. x 12”w. Posed in a refined and elegant manner upon a silk-covered wooden-framed recamier with fringed decorations and velvet pillow, is a bisque-head lady with portrait model face, aquiline nose with upturned tip, blue glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, finelypainted facial details, brunette mohair wig in upswept coiffure, shapely elongated carton torso and slender legs daintily crossed at the ankles, wearing a sheer muslin ruffled overdress on green silk satin, trimmed with red silk ribbons, and with square-cut neckline designed to emphasize her separately modeled shapely bisque bosom. Condition: generally excellent, music and movement function well. Marks: L.B. (key). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1885, with bisque portrait head by Jumeau, the rare automaton is actuated by three brass cams plus two steel stud-cams within the clockwork mechanism. When wound, music plays, and a series of realistic actions occur. Luxuriating on her recamier, the elegant lady, seeming to greet guests, turns and nods her head, appearing to arise, while alternately fanning herself with her right hand, and dabbing her face with the handkerchief held in her left hand. She pauses, and then reclines again, evidently having satisfied the social demands of her high station. Value Points: the intricate movements and artistic presentation of the model indicate its luxury creation, as does the rare portrait Jumeau head and its larger size. Few other models are known to exist. $35,000/45,000 8 detail

9. Pair of Early Miniature Paintings of Lady and Gentleman 2 ½” (6 cm.) x 2” paintings. 6” x 5 ½” frames. The matched portraits, posed facing each other, depict a lady and gentleman, she with elaborate coiffure decorated with a fancy comb, and wearing a low-necked white gown decorated with an orange sash, and with coral necklace and earrings; and he with high-necked shirt with vest, black bow-tie, black fitted jacket with buttons, and having distinctive brushed forward hair and goatee, and shadowed moustache. In matching gilt brass inner frames with wide burled walnut outer frames. Excellent condition. Circa 1820. $600/900

10. Very Fine French Porcelain Poupée by Adelaide Huret with Original Costume 17” (43 cm.) Porcelain shoulder head with pale complexion, blushed detail and glazed finish, painted blue eyes with shaded detail, thick black upper eyeliner, feathered brows, delicately painted lashes, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, un-pierced ears, lambswool wig over cork pate, plump kid poupée body with gussetjointing at the hips and knees, porcelain arms to above the elbows. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Adelaide Huret, one of the earliest models of her landmark doll, circa 1855. Value Points: wonderful example of the beloved doll, with beautiful complexion and painting, wearing original white pique skirt and jacket decorated with red soutache embroidery,

13. 19th Century Lamp with Five-Panel Lithopane Shade 17” (43 cm.) Having original (electrified) glass whale oil base with brass pedestal and marble base, the lamp frame supports a five panel lithograph shade with metal frame, the scenes with various views of childhood. Generally excellent, shade frame needs refitting to base. Circa 1875. $700/900

Pale bisque head with flat-cut neck socket on bisque shoulderplate designed to allow the head to turn realistically side to side (but not completely revolve), brilliant cobalt blue glass eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, unpierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, kid poupée body with gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers. and gold leaf finish, comprising a pedestal tripod table with rose silk cover (some dustiness) having hand-painted details and silk fringe, along with a matching settee, two arm chairs, and two side chairs, each with rose silk upholstery with button tufting and braided edge. Generally excellent. Circa 1880. Along with a pair of brass candlesticks and solid brass figure. $800/1200

16. Early 19th Century Miniature Painting of Gentleman with Book 7” (18 cm.) x 6” frame. 2 ½” x 3 ¼” painting. The painting of a handsome young gentleman with side-parted curly hair and long goatee is wearing a fine silk vest, cravat, jacket, and is posed seated on chair holding a redcovered book in his right hand, and wearing a gold ring on his left hand baby finger. The painting is presented in a deep gold-leaf frame. Generally excellent. Circa 1840. $700/900

17. Very Rare French Bisque Whistling Musical Automaton with Bisque Art Character Head by Jumeau 27” (69 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered pedestal base which contains whistling mechanism is a bisque-head character with highly-stylized features, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brushstroked and feathered brows, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with “O” shaped whistling hole between the shaded lips, separately-modeled pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, composition forearms, antique aqua silk costume with lace collar and cuffs, stockings, black leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and whistling feature function well. Marks: Depose 205 (and artist checkmarks). Comments: attributed to Phalibois, circa 1893, with especially commissioned character head from Jumeau; when wound, the jaunty lad tilts his head side to side while he whistles the tune “Daisy, Daisy, Bicycle Built for Two”; that song, written in 1892, was perfectly suited for this automaton. Value Points: extremely rare automaton is enhanced by the uniquely commissioned art character head, having finest detail of impressed cheek dimples and puckered lips. $25,000/35,000

18. Very Fine Early Miniature “Token of Esteem” with Provenance 4” (10 cm.) x 3 ½”. The firm-sided card stock box has original engraved and embossed decorative paper cover, and is designed with hinge-open lid, front and sides. A round gilt-framed mirror is on the inside lid and the base presents two glass decanters with gold paper decoupage and four goblets. Included is an ink-written note “A token of esteem presented to Amelia Fowler by her Teacher Ruth M. Fowler”. Excellent condition. Mid-1800s. $800/1200

19. Outstanding and Rare All-Original French Bisque Exhibition Bébé by Emile Jumeau 20” (51 cm.) Bisque socket head with lustrous brown complexion, black brushstroked brows with decorative glaze, dark eyeliner, lushly-painted black lashes, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, black mohair wig in elaborate coiffure over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body in matching brown complexion. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 9. Comments: Emile Jumeau, the model appeared in his “bébés de quatre continents” (dolls of four continents) series introduced in 1889, designed to appeal to international visitors to the 1889 International Exposition in Paris. The classic

tete models of Jumeau were created with various complexions to represent different peoples of the world; their ethnicity was accentuated by details such as, on this example, a young East Indian woman, the bindi (red forehead dot) signifying married status, love and prosperity, and by superbly created costumes from the Jumeau atelier. Value Points: extremely rare doll, her rarity enhanced by wonderfully preserved condition, flawless complexion, original elaborate coiffure and headdress, original body and body finish, and outstanding original silk costume with passamenterie and “emerald” jewels. No other examples of this model are known to exist. $22,000/35,000

22. Exceptional French All-Bisque Mignonette with Smiling Expression and Bare Feet 20. Very Rare German All-Bisque Doll by Kestner with Swivel Waist 6 ½” (17 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque two-piece torso with kid-edged swivel waist, brown glass sleep eyes, delicately-painted lashes and arched brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, pin-jointed bisque arms and legs, modeled cupped and folded fingers, painted white above-the-knee stockings with scalloped edge and black ankle boots. Condition: generally excellent, flake at rim of left side leg, Marks: 1 (head and torso). Comments: Kestner, circa 1880. Value Points: rarity factors of the doll include swivel waist, fancy stockings, beautiful sculpting and bisque, and original wig and pate. $1800/2300

21. Miniature Enameled Sedan Chair with Cherubs and Two All-Bisque Dolls 4” (10 cm.) The miniature metal sedan chair with royal blue enameled finish has hinged front door and is decorated with four different raised designs of winged cherubs. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: late 1800s. Value Points: rare little miniature sedan chair

Solid-domed bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque elongated torso, cobaltblue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, accented nostrils, closed mouth with smiling expression, defined space between the outlined lips, brunette human hair, peg-jointed bisque arms and legs, bare feet, lovely antique costume. Condition: generally excellent, small repair on upper right leg. Comments: French, circa 1882. Value Points: an especially beautiful face with rare smiling expression, brilliant cobalt eyes contrast the pale complexion, bare feet. $1200/1800 22.

23. French Bisque Poupée with Rare Body, Dehors Articulation, and Fabulous Original Costume 17” (43 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulderplate with extra Dehors articulation that allows the head to tilt coquettishly sideways and forward, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, rose-blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined lips, ears pierced into head, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, firmly-stuffed plump kid poupée body with gusset-jointing at hips and knees, kid-overwood upper arms to below the jointed elbows, bisque lower arms with sculpted curled fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1867, attributed to Auguste Dehors who deposed his head articulation system in 1866. The Dehors establishment included not only himself but also his wife, Alexandrine Dehors, who was the creator of trousseau and luxury costumes. Value Points: very fine poupée with Dehors neck articulation, rare body in near mint condition, and wearing original luxury costume of brown velvet with mauve silk trim and buttons, black lace edging, matching mauve velvet bonnet, undergarments, black leather shoes signed C.M. and wonderful necessaire box with exquisite detailing. $6500/8500

24. Charming French Bisque Doll as Chauffeur in Candy Box Automobile 11” (28 cm.) A wooden open-top auto with four rubber-wheeled metalspoked tires and metal steering wheel and handles, has a seated bisquehead driver with glass eyes, painted features, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, bisque hands, and is wearing his original brown velvet chauffeur uniform with matching cap and silver medallion trim, black boots. The man separates at midriff to reveal his candy container torso, and the back seat originally opened (now sealed shut) for use as a further candy box. A metal plate at the side of the auto reads “Le Jeune St. Cyr S&O.” Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French,circa 1895. 39. Wooden Napoleonic-Style Wooden Carriage by Fisher 20” (51 cm.) l. 11”h. The elaborately carved wooden royal carriage, an emulation of the Napoleonic parade carriage, is constructed with working doors, steps, upholstered interior, velvet-covered and fringed driver’s seat, and decorative embellishments including winged eagles at each corner of the carriage. The coach has original blue enameled finish with gilt decorations, tassels, and red spoked wheels. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: during the late 1800s, the Fisher company was considered the apogee of carriage makers; in 1908 they opened Fisher Body in Detroit, and later created car body styles for various manufacturers. During the 1930s the Fisher Body Company ran competitions to publicize their designs; one of these competitions concerned building a model of a Napoleonic carriage which was the traditional logo of the company. A Grodnertal wooden doll with painted hair and facial features, jointing at shoulders and hips, has a bone pin extending from one foot for balancing, and two extended ball shaped counterweights to create the balancing effect. The doll poses upon its original elegantly-shaped platform with bone-carved balancing plate. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1850, inspired by the popular acrobatic themes of the early/mid-19th century, the balancing toys were created in both Germany and France. An exceptionally handsome couple, the Marquise and Marquis, are posed as for a formal dance, he with bisque head, brown glass eyes, closed mouth, brunette mohair wig, carton body, legs and hands, and wearing original ivory silk court costume with elaborate soutache embroidery and silk-covered buttons; and she with bisque swivel head on bisque shoulder plate, blue glass eyes, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, carton upper torso, bisque lower arms, and wearing luxurious silk gown and with metal cone-shaped base under the skirt that contains the clockwork mechanism. The man and woman are attached by a rod from torso to torso; she has small gliding wheels on bottom of her base, and he is slightly lifted from the floor so he will glide easily on her support. When wound, music plays and the couple glides and twirls in an elegant waltz-like fashion. Condition: generally excellent, music and movements function well. Marks: G.Vichy Paris (metal plaque on cone). Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1880. The waltzing couple automaton had been made for several decades before this model appeared, most particularly by Theroude about 1850, using dolls with paper mache heads. Value Points: rare grand size of the elegant couple with realistic waltzing movements, achieved by the clever notion of hiding the mechanism under the woman’s skirt. 73. French Musical Automaton “Little Girl with Pet Mouse” by Rambour 17” (43 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered platform behind a velvet-covered table with a painted tin mouse cage is a bisque-head doll with blue glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, wearing pretty antique costume, and holding a baton in one hand and the string to open the mouse cage in the other. When wound, two mechanisms operate in synchronism: the girl lifts her head and then lifts her left arm to open the door of the cage, allowing the mouse to timidly emerge and then whirl around as though to scurry back into the cage. Music plays throughout.

Marks: M (doll). Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Charles Rambour, circa 1895. Rambour acquired the rights to the Bru mechanical “surprise” patents in 1893 and created amusing articles such as this for next seven years. A bisque-head lady with refined portrait modeling is posed standing upon a velvet-covered platform, brown glass paperweight eyes, rich dark eyeliner, painted curly lashes, feathered brows, closed mouth, blonde mohair wig, separate bisque shoulder plate, carton torso and shapely legs, bisque forearms and hands, wearing ivory and patterned rose silk shepherdess gown and matching bonnet. Appearing to be held in her right hand is a woven lidded basket decorated with colorful flowers, in which is hidden a little lamb; the basket is actually attached to her torso by hidden metal rods. When wound, music plays and her head turns as though gazing at her flock of sheep and she lifts the bouquet of flowers she holds in her left hand. Meanwhile the lid of her basket lifts, as though the baby lamb is just awakening. The lamb’s head peeks out, turns side-to-side, and his mouth opens and closes, the shepherdess turns and nods tenderly to the baby lamb, which bleats and tucks back into the basket. The lid closes. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 9 (head). Comments: Jean Roullet, Paris, circa 1880, with commissioned bisque portrait head from Emile Jumeau. The automaton appeared in an early Roullet catalog named “Bergere Watteau” in homage to the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau whose early 18th century romantic paintings had idealized the French countryside. 126. A Family of American Black-Complexioned Wax Dolls by Mary McEwen 11” (28 cm.) Each has hand-sculpted wax head with rich brown complexion, large round brown glass up-glancing eyes, tiny nose, closed mouth, plump cheeks, bald pate, the two larger with original wire-frame body wrapped in cloth and with large sculpted wax hands in expressive pose, and the child with fabric wrapped wire-frame body and leatherette hands and feet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Mary McEwen, circa 1920, the wax artist learned her trade from her husband’s business, McEwen Wax Works, which made wax mannequins for store displays; after her husband’s death, McEwen moved to Seattle, and according to legend, began to create miniature wax people using the same techniques employed in her husband’s business. For about 20 years, she is said to have produced 100s of these small dolls, each individually sculpted and each entirely made by her. Never marketed, the dolls were only later discovered in her estate. The rare dolls are notable for their distinctive, highly personalized expressions. When wound, music plays (two tunes, one of which is Auld Lang Syne), the soldier extends the flowers toward the woman, while his eyes blink and his mouth opens and closes as though beseeching her; meanwhile the nanny vigorously shakes her head side to side as though saying “no, no”, then looks toward the baby and extends the bottle to the baby who excitedly lifts its head. He is wearing his original fancy croupier costume with brocade silk vest, shirt, bow tie, magenta silk jacket with tails, breeches, tights, shoes, top hat and a medallion jewel. When wound, two tunes play sequentially, and the gambling magic tricks ensue; he blinks his eyes open and closed, his mouth opens and closes, and he alternately lifts the cups to reveal ever-changing treasures including rooster, rose, coins, elephant, little doll, “jewels” and die with ever-changing turn. Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden platform is a bisque-head girl with brilliant blue glass paperweight inset eyes, painted features, open mouth, teeth, pierced ears, carton torso and legs, bisque forearms, wearing a lovely lace and silk dress with floral-trimmed lace coiffe. She is holding a metal bowl of sudsy water in one hand, and a bubble pipe in the other. When wound, music plays and she dips the pipe in the sudsy water, and then lifts it to her mouth and appears to blow bubbles. The bubbles actually occur from a bellows system hidden inside her torso which creates a breeze, and, hence, the bubbles. Condition: generally excellent, music and movements function well. The ball gown has an extended train which is held by a black-complexioned page who walks behind. The mechanical works are attached to the page by a metal rod. When wound, the lady glides forward, the page marching briskly behind her, and she turns her head imperiously from side to side and alternately fans herself and lifts her left arm to peer through the lorgnette which she is holding. Condition: dolls and mechanism are excellent, costumes are original albeit her gown is very frail, lorgnette partial. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1875. The early wooden-cased presentation with glass front and assembled with hand-cast iron studs presents a uniquelycostumed paper mache lady set in fanciful surroundings. The doll has shoulderhead, painted black short hair, painted facial features, kid body and is wearing a gown with net overlay that is decorated with metal and gilt paper tinsel and appliques. The doll stands in the center of a

V-roofed alcove and is surrounded by rows of uniquely-constructed cut paper flowers which are dimensionally set away from the back wall by hidden wires, and are of variegated brilliant colors in fanciful designs. The side walls are decorated with colorful snowflake cut-outs. Condition: very good/excellent. Comments: circa 1840, likely American, the case was presented for several decades at the Mary Merritt Doll Museum in Pennsylvania. Arranged in a garden like setting on an ebony wooden base under glass dome, is a beautiful woman seated at her sewing machine, she with bisque portrait head, blue glass inset eyes, well-painted features, closed mouth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, original silk costume and coiffe, carton body, wooden hands in curled pose. The sewing machine has metal frame and wooden table top, movable wheels and treadle, and is arranged with a piece of fabric to be “sewn”. When wound, music plays, and the lady “moves her head, arms and foot and the machine works in splendid imitation of a real sewing machine”, as described in an 1884 advertisement by the Silber and Fleming firm of London. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (original paper tune label “Musique a 2 airs” listing two tunes, illegible writing). Comments: Phalibois, circa 1885, the sewing machine had gradually gained societal acceptance in the mid-1800s, and this automaton is a fascinating glimpse at the newly emerging mechanized world. Arranged upon a velvet-covered demi-lune-shaped platform with braid edging are three bisque shoulderhead dolls depicting two gentlemen of the court and a lady who is tending to an exotic bird. Each has well-painted facial features, mohair wig, padded armature body in expressive body, and bisque hands, and each is costumed in original elaborate silk with hats or coiffe to indicate their aristocratic status. The lady is seated behind her porcelain exotic bird which is perched on a brass tree, one gentleman is seated and the second gentleman appears to lean over his shoulder. A music box is hidden inside the platform which plays a delightful tune when wound. Condition: generally excellent, woman has three broken fingers. A box-shaped base displays a propped up wrist watch whose crystal is being held open by a diligent worker while another watch maker winds the knob back and forth. Three other watch makers perform various moving tasks including one that peeks in and out from the second-hand hole in which he is hiding. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Baranger Studios, the California firm created a series of amusing animated window displays with mechanical works as generic advertising pieces from about 1924 until 1950s, and rented them to jewelers. It is believed that no more than 30 of any model were made. Value Points: the rarity of the mechanical display is enhanced by its wonderful state of preservation, and delightful antics. $5000/7500
