The Hanne Büktas Vision Choose an adjective. Discerning. Curious. Encompassing. Reflective. Each of those words describes the vision of the extraordinary Viennese collector, Hanne Büktas. Collectors are familiar already with her vision in the three preceding auctions of her specialized collections conducted by Theriault’s, including the 2010 auction, Echoes of Remembered Rooms, the 2013 auction Ensemble, French Poupées and Their Trousseaux; and the 2014 auction, Antique Needlework Tools and Sewing Accessories. Now, in this present offering, Lady Fancies, the astute collector continues to present, through antique objects, a perspective of women and their changing roles in society through the 19th and early 20th century as seen in the female half-doll figures. Too, her historian’s mind has been coupled with the precise eye of an artist, insisting upon quality and originality in the works she acquired, and always seeking to recognize interrelationships between pieces. Thus, she sought not only a half-doll, itself, but also other forms in which that same half-doll may have been presented by its maker. A half-doll might be a figure designed for attachment to a tea cozy or it might be a full body porcelain statue, or designed to be atop a porcelain dresser box serving as its handle, or be a lamp or a candy box decoration.
t
Nearly a half century in its study, acquisition and care, it is Hanne Büktas’ pleasure to offer these rare and beautiful pieces that they can continue to be cherished by today’s collectors.
Introduction
It was 1908 and the Munich Arts and Crafts Guild had just opened its exhibition doors. The public was awestruck at the new art dolls portraying realistic childhood expressions that were shown by such artists as Marion Kaulitz and even such commercial firms as Kammer and Reinhardt, and to this day these 1908 art dolls continue to command among the highest interest and prices of antique dolls.
But few collectors are aware that something else was also introduced for the very first time at the 1908 Munich exhibition. Named the “tea lady” or “tee puppen”, it was a waist-up porcelain figure of a lady attached to a wire frame that was richly costumed in fine fabric, and it was designed to fancifully cover the tea pot at the ladies’ afternoon socials. The figures themselves were elegant works
One of the largest sizes created of half-dolls is the 10” lady at the back row, left, with elaborately-detailed hair decoration and a butterfly posed on her hand. The lady in the lower row, center, holds an extraordinary bounty of Dresden flowers atop her head; each petal of each flower was applied separately in the creation of this masterpiece. The other four examples illustrate more variations in decoration with Dresden petals.

of porcelain art, made by many of the same fine porcelain firms, such as the Dressel & Kister firm, Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrick, and Royal Bavarian Porcelain Manufacturer in Nymphenburg, Bavaria, that created other decorative figurines for the parlor.
Lot 1. Known as the Nymphenburg Lady, the model was presented at the 1908 Munich Arts and Crafts Exhibition and is considered the premiere “tea lady” doll, a pivotal object in doll history.
It is likely that the production of half-dolls was, at first, merely a profitable off-shoot for many of these porcelain firms. After all, the same porcelain models that were earlier made as full figurine
statues for the parlor could also be altered into a waist-up form with holes at the waist, designed to be sewn to wire tea cozy frames, pincushions or such. That is why it is possible today to find the very same porcelain models in a variety of forms: full figures, half-doll, trinket box, or more. Quickly, following their 1908 introduction, the tea lady dolls became such a rage that articles appeared in numerous magazines concerning Lot 52 and 53. The stunning porcelain figure of Marie Antoinette ideas for dressing the by Ernst Bohne Sohne was created in several forms, using the dolls and by the time same waist-up details, such as this full figurine and the exact of the 1920 Leipzig model as a half-dolls.
The 1920s saw the introduction of stylized flapper figures. Generally presented as a single figure, some rare examples featured pairs in flirtatious, theatrical or amusing poses. Each of the examples shown here were designed for use as powder puffs; the heads served as handles for the puff which appeared as a skirt, and the bases each had a hidden tray upon which the puff rested when not in use.
By 1920, the half-doll movement had metamorphosed into a myriad of objects.

trend, noting “The reform of the toy doll has created a strong reaction even among adults. It is not merely that the doll became a collector’s object…but it became fashionable…The tea cozy dolls in particular, the fashion for which raged for several years, gave the greatest scope in this direction.”
shawls and bonnets that revealed nary a bit of flesh except their face and hands. In the late 1920s and 1930s, the ladies, whether nude or clothed, were highly influenced by the Art Déco and Art Moderne movements, becoming more stylized in their pose and decoration, sometimes to the point of utter exaggeration. From 1910 to the 1930s children were also a popular theme, some in Dickensian costume of great artistic detail and, later, some whimsical wide-eyed, sometimes googly-eyed, urchins. In each era, half-dolls were inspired by popular culture including theatrical performers, royalty, or subjects of famous paintings. Partly this was because of a ready market for objects related to these familiar subjects, and partly because images of these people were more available for the porcelain designer to emulate. Other themes were reflective of changing trends. During the post WWI years, ladies with cigarettes began to appear. The modestly-posed ankle-crossed Edwardian ladies became the knee-crossed flapper of the 1920s with lazily draped arms and saucily turned head, and then again, changed in the 1930s, becoming the long-limbed,
The half-doll craze continued into the 1920s and 1930s, and although its The 1920s gave rise to audacious styles that were delightfully given sculpted life in basic purpose to models such as this 5-6-inch sextet ranging from the naked flapper with top serve as a focal hat, to the mysterious half-robed woman with fur-collared white shawl center for functional and lavish jewelry. objects remained Spring fair a reporter wrote of the “New Tea and constant, the design themes of the porcelain figures Decorative Dolls”, declaring that “Without doubt, themselves evolved. About 1908 there were the tea dolls have made progress. Today we find them dainty and proper ladies, arms posed elegantly or more and more as room decorations, and their modestly away, ability to be arranged and decorated has still not as well as the reached a foreseeable end.” By this time, the tea cozy flowing and lady dolls had metamorphosed into a myriad of sensuous ladies objects. Many other porcelain firms had entered inspired by the the market. Dressel and Kister, for example, offered Art Nouveau assembly “kits” for the lady of the house to create movement. the skirts for their tea cozies, while other firms During the quickly suggested their use as covers for the “new” 1920s, a curious gooseneck telephone that now existed in many double standard homes. Still other half-dolls began to appear atop appeared. There pincushions, trinket boxes, bonbonnieres, even was, on the one whisk brooms, fans, and other accessories. And no hand, a line of longer were the dolls only “half ”, but also appeared sensually-posed in other constructions, such as the two-part doll ladies, often with a powder puff attached to the base of the halfnude or semidoll which rested upon separate legs with an upper clothed, and, plate for the puff to rest upon: voila, the powder on the other puff became the “skirt”. hand, ladies in The lady doll figures created as half-dolls were also presented as full figures with the 18th century attached utility purposes. Each of the 1920s ladies shown here are attached to a chair or In the 1932 book, Dolls and Puppets, by Max von style, costumed in platform which is actually a trinket box. The woman forms the lid of the box, and also Boehn, the author wrote retrospectively of the sculpted gowns, functions as the handle.

dynamically striding lady of purpose. The bicycleriding sportswoman of the 1900 era became the skier of the 1930s. The Japonism movement in the early 1900s created interest in Eastern theme subjects. Even non-people objects became used as half-dolls; most popular in this category were animals, birds, and flowers. A study of department store and gift store catalogs of the era indicates that half-dolls were included in the novelty category of goods. So it is not surprising that today’s collectors edge into related genre including bathing beauty dolls, full-figural trinket boxes which separate at the waist for access to the hollow interior, and even vases, figurines, lamps, clocks and other objects suitable for a lady’s dressing table or the parlor vitrine. It is, also, not unreasonable to position the half-dolls genre within the wider scope of other fashionable dolls of the 1920s and 1930s, such as the salon or boudoir dolls, that were never intended as child play, and were largely designed as decorative objects. The heyday of German and French half-doll production was from 1908 until the second World War, although half-dolls continued to be produced to some smaller extent for longer. For example, the Hertwig firm of Germany continued production until 1953 when they were taken over by the East Germany government. Too, post-WWII, Japanese porcelain firms had begun production and exportation of half-dolls, albeit mostly of a simplistic dime-store quality. Along the way, the original purpose of the tea cozy lady became blurred. After all, how many covers for teapots could one home have? Whether the idea originated with collectors themselves, or whether the porcelain firms or stores began to promote the notion, it became popular to simply collect the figurines themselves, placing them on display on a lady’s dressing table amidst perfume bottles and brushes, or in a dainty vitrine in the parlor. And then, as usually happens, one thing led to another. Why not also collect the full-doll example of the same half-doll? Why not collect variations of painting? Why not collect candy boxes or sewing boxes with full or half-dolls decorations? And what
Bathing beauty ladies, often in somewhat ribald poses, were apt depictions of the changing society as less than two decades earlier a woman would not even appear at a beachside in less than full-body covering. about bathing beauties, wedding cake toppers, bottle stoppers? What about porcelain vignettes which incorporated the models found also as halfdolls? Ah, delightfully, the collecting possibilities are endless! Until the 1970s, there was little published attention paid to the subject of half-dolls. Pioneer doll authors such as Janet Johl and Clara Fawcett, writing in the 1950s, made no mention of them as half-dolls although a careful reading of their works finds reference to “costume dolls” which may have been half-dolls. Then, in 1974, Frieda Marion produced her slim little book, China Half-Figures called Pincushion Dolls in which she proclaimed

“produced to ornament utilitarian objects, the charming half-figures, rich in a variety of design, were neither children’s playthings nor decorative figurines, but had a life of their own”. She wrote later that she was astounded at the popular response to her book, and, beginning a collaboration with Norma Werner, five years later published the 608 page landmark book, The Encyclopedia of Half-Dolls, which remained the only go-to reference work on the subject until the early 2000s when Shona and Marc Lorrin presented their four volume series, The Half-dolls, which breathed new knowledge into this collecting genre. x - Florence Theriault, April 2019

The Celebrity Dolls of the Half-Doll World Imagine yourself in another time before the world of the internet has made images of famous people available to everyone, everywhere, anytime. In that time, you would have heard of the beautiful Queen in a far-away land, you would imagine how splendid could be the graceful ballerina or the dramatic actress in that year’s theatre presentations. But what did they really look like? The opportunity to see them in person was remote, and only if you were very fortunate could you visit
museums to see their portraits or own books with portrait engravings or photographs to feed your curiosity.
It is true that for centuries, busts and statues had been sculpted of famous people of porcelain, wood and wax. Later, porcelain firms created superb portraits in both doll and full-porcelain-body form. Though few were actually identified by the subject’s name, collectors today can easily recognize the images of these celebrities such as Queen Victoria.
But it took the popularity of the half-doll in the earliest decade of the 1900s to bring the notion of portrait celebrity doll to full blossom. Then, half-doll portraits were created to such exactitude as to belie argument that “oh, they just sort of look like so-and-so”. In some cases, most notably in the inventory descriptions of the Goebel firm of Germany, certain half-dolls were even described in company records with the name of the person they represented, usually a luminary in the world of royalty, theatre, and later,
Princess de Lamballe from the Court of Marie Antoinette. Her garland of flowers on elaborately-sculpted hair was considered her signature look, as seen here in an oil painting by Louis-Edouard Rioult and half-doll by Dressel & Kister.

film. Unfortunately for today’s collectors wishing to confirm the subject of a particular halfdoll, and despite the obvious lucrative purse potential that would have existed, the notion of brand licensing did not exist until the 1920s, thus leaving little documentary evidence to prove identification. Yet the quest to identify the subject of any particular halfdoll, whether historical or popular culture, continues.
Guyta was a performer at the Folies Bergere in Paris and appeared in promotional posters exactly as depicted in this half-doll, according to information shared by Shona & Marc Lorrin in The Half-Doll, Vol. 1.
Oil paintings of the beloved Empress Eugenie of France feature her strong aquiline nose, as does this half-doll from the Goebel Historic Series of 1910 which named this model as Empress Eugenie.
Madame Mole-Raymond, the famed French actress of the late 1700s was portrayed in semi-profile in the 18th century portrait by the French painter, Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun. In 1910 the image was re-created in an imaginative half-doll with the arms posed to allow an actual fur muff to be added as shown in the painting.
An intriguing half-doll with distinctive personality and throat and hair ornaments. It is uncertain who she portrays but likely answers include Queen Maria Carolina of Naples or the beloved Prussian Queen Elisabeth, wife of King Wilhelm. Marie Antoinette, the half-doll created by Ernst Bohne Sohne, inspired by the 1783 portrait painting of the Queen in lavish white feathered bonnet by Vigee-LeBrun.
The 18th century Parisian ballerina known as La Camargo famously introduced the ballet slipper as a replacement for heeled dancing shoes, made further famous in an oil painting by Nicolas Lancret, c. 1730, and created by Dressel & Kister as a half-doll with muslin torso and porcelain legs with ballet slippers.
Although not identified as the early silent film star Louise “Lulu Brooks, the halfdoll bears an uncanny resemblance including the unusual slit cut of her bangs.
