Half-Dolls –
Studies in Fashion History or Fantasy? So this is how they arranged their coiffures? So these are the costume colors that were popular? So this is the way that costumes were trimmed or draped? It is not unreasonable to suggest that a study in the design of half-dolls can be useful as a study in the history of fashion. Or were these dolls just a flight of decorative fancy, images of costumes that never were? The truth lies somewhere in between and, once accepting that premise, they can be useful tools in understanding what people wore and how they wore them. In a study of fashion, half-dolls curiously seem to have skipped a century, as the most successful models presented
Lot 15.1 and 103. Among the more stark of the 1920 style coiffures is this known as the Lulu bob, a dramatic difference from the voluminous coiffures of the 18th century style ladies.
Lot 4,13, and 14. Flapper half-doll ladies of the 1920s are notable for slouching poses, hands on hips which would have been considered decidedly unladylike in the past, and fitted cloche caps which form an ensemble with jackets.
3
costume of the late 18th century and then, leaving the 19th century behind, moved abruptly into the modish mood of the 1920s. Keeping that in mind, here are some ways in which half-dolls of the late 18th century and the early 20th century reflected fashion moods.
Lot 131 and 78. The exuberant bonnets of 18th century ladies varied greatly from the snug fitted hats of the 1920s.
Lot 76 and 172. While the flapper lady half-doll was often accessorized by gloves and small purses, the 18th century ladies more daintily held objects such as fans.
4
The Colors. The half-dolls in 18th century costume are notable for rich burgundies, yellow and purple contrasted by delicate rose and egg-shell blue. Few costumes are monochromatic, their colors are not subtle, and dramatic colorful gilt and floral painted designs dramatize each. In contrast, the 20th century fashionable half-dolls are usually monochromatic in soft pastels of pink, blue and aqua, or in dramatic counterpoints of black and white. The Coiffures. The elaborate high-style coiffure of the Marie Antoinette court was the style de rigeur of the 18th century costumed half-doll, usually very formalized or, in some notable cases with flowing curls at the back of the head. The coiffure style change of the 1920s flapper was dramatic and striking featuring short bobbed hair, sometimes straight cut in Lulu fashion, sometimes in wavy marcelled curls. The Decorative Accents. The variation in headwear between the two periods is especially notable. Half-dolls in 18th century garb were crowned with widebrimmed bonnets lavishly appointed with high plumed feathers, artisticallywrapped ribbons, ruffles and garlands of flowers. Even those without bonnets were generally adorned with clusters or coronets of flowers. As for the flapper era half-doll, they were often bareheaded, or, if hatted, with fitted cloche
which stylishly matched the ensemble. Ladies of the 18th century court halfdolls were often posed with a fan, flower or love letter, while the modish 20th century woman might have gloved hands, hold a stylish small purse, or compact and lipstick. The Drape and Pose. Perhaps in no other manner did the 18th century-style half-dolls differ from their 20th century sisters than in the pose of the body and the draping of the costumes. While the 18th century-style half-doll boasted a voluptuous figure, with arms extended in a graceful and elegant manner, and head held demurely, the 20th century half-doll lady was slender-bodied, her angular face accentuated by languorous hands-on-hip posing. Accepting that the costumes, coiffures and postures of half-dolls are a tad unrealistic, it is certain that they also provide valuable clues to the popular fashion trends of their times, clues that are no less true than the idealized images in fashion journals or mannequins in store windows. This Volume II of Lady Fancies provides vivid proof of that statement. x
Lot 166 and 196. With her head tilted modestly and shaded by a wide-brimmed bonnet, the 18th century lady daintily displays her lovely necklace, a contrast to the saucy red-haired flapper with elaborate body jewelry who teasingly holds up her purple halter. Lot 314 and 48. The ladies of the 18th century court were elaborately madeup and coiffed by their attendants, but this all changed in the 20th century as reflected in half-doll design.
Lot 32 and 303. Where have all the flowers gone? A plethora of flowers in the form of garlands, bouquet and little accents abounded on half-dolls representing the 18th century, but in the halfdolls representing early 20th century, they had all but disappeared as shown in this contrast of two half-doll children.
