The Estate Collection of Ron and Mary Ellen Connor Foreword from Stuart Holbrook

It was nearly eight years ago that I received a card in the mail congratulating me on the birth of my daughter, Kinley. I expected that this card from Ron and Mary Ellen Connor would be one of many words, because as those who have come to know and love Ron over the years will tell you, he had a way with words! Even his own daughter, Eileen, recounts the time she fell asleep on the sofa and woke an hour later to the exclamation from Ron “... and that, in essence, is the story of how electricity was invented!” He never realized she had been sleeping through this entire speech of which she still has no idea how it even began. Given Ron Connor’s propensity for words, the note he sent me was actually surprising in that it was simple and contained the most minimal of messages: 4

“Dear Stuart, Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. As one who has raised five wonderful children I have only the following advice…give her wings.”

Ron was a man of many words. But he was also a man of the most perfectly articulated sentiments. This was one of the many qualities that he and Mary Ellen showed me over the years, as we became friends through collecting. Whether an hourlong story about electricity or a simple sentence regarding fatherhood, his words were always expressive and, well, just right. Ronnoc Connor – and, yes he knew his first name was actually his last name spelled backwards - never fought the urge to let one thing lead to another. It started with clocks. Years ago, upon

leaving an antique shop, he caught sight of a lovely old example that, though in need of repair, was perfect for a niche in the Connor home, then in Park Ridge, Illinois. Ron became fascinated with that clock owing to his engineering background and love of learning ‘how things work’. And, of course, to find even more clocks to study the variations they contained. We all know this story too well, the origins of every collection. And that’s when one thing led to another. Ron also loved music - and even sang in the glee club. As such he found a perfect combination of mechanics and music in the collecting of music boxes for which he delved right in with passion and curiosity. And that led to another. Owing to his wife’s interest in dolls, Ron became intrigued by musical automata and mechanical dolls. A perfect complement and a combined interest for them both - it became a new passion which they could enjoy together and was the hallmark of their collections.

Yet, it led to even one more fascination. The dolls of Jumeau. Ron and Mary Ellen noticed that the finest automata utilized bisque heads by the firm of Jumeau and thus began their intense appreciation for this “roi du poupée”. They sought every model and in every size, always aiming for the most original examples as a view of their remarkable collection will attest. As Ron might say, to paraphrase his electricity story, “...and that, in essence, is the story of how our collection began.”

(though he never stopped collecting in her absence and found it a soothing way to continue the work they started together). One of his wishes was that the collection that brought them so much joy over the years should be offered to other collectors, hopefully to inspire everyone through their collecting vision of “one thing leads to another” and what that means in the happy life of a collector. It is that collection of automata, music boxes and Jumeau bébés that is offered in this catalog. x

About Pierre-François Jumeau From a foreword to The Jumeau Book, written by Jacqueline Grenier, great-granddaughter of Pierre François Jumeau “In my mind’s eye I see his portrait hanging in the living room between two windows with stiff red satin ropes: his large, light blue eyes observe you with intensity, his face expresses invincible energy. He was stubborn and unyielding, yet just. His grandchildren used to say that when he corrected behavior he spoke sharply, concisely and with discrimination; his tone was authoritarian. His best friend a large Pyrenees dog named Balarias. PierreFrançois was creative and decisive, an administrator and an exporter, with a genius for interior decorating, beauty and elegance: he was designated as an “Artistic Manufacturer” at the World’s Fair of 1849. He was a levelheaded artist, asked reasonable prices for what he made, and feared no competition.” 8

Pressed bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, grey glass inset eyes with spiral threading and darker blue outer rims, thick dark eyeliner, delicately-painted lashes and brows, mauve eye shadow, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with pale outlined lips, separately-applied pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, kid poupée body with gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers and toes, beautifully costumed in pale rose silk gown with lace trim, matching ruffled bonnet, undergarments, leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Pierre-François Jumeau, circa 1875, the grand size and superb quality of the poupée indicates its likely creation for exhibition purposes. Value Points: very rare size enhanced by splendid modeling and delicatelycomplexioned bisque with softest blush enhancing the cheeks, chin, eyelids, and ear lobes, very sturdy original body. $7500/9500

2. Very Beautiful French Bisque Poupée with Expressive Features 20” (51 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, original blonde mohair wig with elaborate coiffure, cork pate, French kid poupée body with gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees, stitched and separated fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 5. Comments: French, circa 1875. Value Points: very beautiful face, bisque, and painting of features, sturdy original body, original wig, and wearing exquisite antique rose silk and lace gown, undergarments, fancy tall boots, woven bonnet with silk flowers, turquoise brooch and earrings, and carrying wooden-handled parasol with silk and tulle cover. $3500/4500

3. Delicately Featured French Bisque Portrait Bébé by Emile Jumeau 25” (64 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with very plump cheeks, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, mauveblushed eye shadow, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with shaded and outlined lips, separately-modeled pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists, lovely antique costume and bonnet. Condition: generally excellent, original body finish, albeit light rubs on finger tips. Marks: 12 (head) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1878, a transitional portrait facial model used for both bébé and poupée models for a very short period of time. Value Points: beautiful doll with very delicate and gentle features enhanced by finest bisque and painting, original body and body finish. $5500/7500

4. All-Original French Bisque Musical Automaton “Troubadour Playing the Mandolin” by Roullet et Decamps 17” (48 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered base with ebony wooden feet is a bisque headed troubadour having blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, open mouth, outlined lips, four teeth, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig in flowing curls over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing original elaborate purple velvet costume with rich gilt trim, and holding a wooden mandolin. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau 2. Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, the model appeared in their original catalog as #369 described as “Persan jouant la mandoline”. Value Points: fine original condition with charming presentation, costume, and movements, the automaton is all-original. $4000/7500

5. French Bisque Bébé Jumeau in Outstanding Original Couturier Asian Costume and Head-dress 19” (48 cm.) Bisque socket head, amber brown glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, lushlypainted lashes, brush-stroked and feathered brows, rose-blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth, pierced ears, black mohair wig with queue over cork pate, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 8 (and artist checkmarks, head) Bébé Jumeau Depose (body). Comments: Jumeau, circa 1888, under commission, a select group of bébés were created and costumed by Jumeau in authentic and elaborate Asian costumes. Value Points: few models are known to exist of the series, this example with gorgeous eyes, fine bisque, original body and body finish, and wearing gorgeous original Asian silk and velvet costume with gilt thread trim, elaborate head-dress with silk and beaded flowers, earrings, necklace, undergarments, socks, and signed Jumeau shoes. $6000/8000

The first exotic bébés were presented by Jumeau in 1885 and remained an important luxury line for that firm until the end of the century. 13

6. Very Rare Earliest Period French Bisque Bébé EJ in Size 11 24” (61 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head with very full cheeks, strong throat, brown glass paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted delicate lashes, mauve blushed eye shadow, delicately feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with defined space between the outlined lips, separately modeled pierced ears, (frail) original lambswool wig over cork pate (additional antique blonde mohair wig). French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with plump lower arms, straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent, flake at right pierced ear hole. Marks: EJ 11 (head) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1880, the earliest period of his signature bébé was made for a very short period only. Value Points: rare large early bébé with gorgeous sculpting, finest quality bisque and painting, original body with original finish, included is antique velvet and silk dress, leather shoes, and antique blonde mohair wig. $8500/11,500

23” (58 cm.) Seated daintily upon a wooden stool on a red velvet -covered platform is a bisque-head lady with blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes and brows, rose blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair hand-tied wig over cork pate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing original rose silk dress with elaborate petal and bead appliques and lace trim, with matching pom-pom trimmed slippers and hat. When wound, music plays, the lady moves her head up and down in a nodding fashion, then side-to-side, while moving the mandolin up and down in her left hand, and strumming the keys with her right; meaning her right leg moves up and down in time to the music. Condition: generally excellent, music and movements function wonderfully. Marks: 8 (head) L.B. (key). L. Lambert Fabricant ...(original gilt lettered red label on back along with colorful tune label). Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1890, one of the luxury pieces from his collection, with costume created in his own atelier under the direction of his wife. Value Points: all original automaton with gorgeous Jumeau bisque head, luxury original couturier costume, superb movements and music with gorgeous sound, and with rare original labels. This actual automata appears in The Jumeau Book, p.384. $8000/12,000

9. French Musical Automaton “Elegant Lady at Her Piano” by Gustave Vichy

8. Early French Porcelain Poupée with Rare Body, Porcelain Arms, and Original Costume 14” (36 cm.) Porcelain shoulder head with very-lightly-tinted complexion and blushed cheeks, cobalt blue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted fringe lashes, delicately-feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth, unpierced ears, blonde lambswool wig over cork pate, firmly-stuffed kid body with gusset-jointing at hips, wooden ball-jointing at knees, dowel-jointing at shoulders of upper kid-over-wooden arms, porcelain arms from above the elbows, curled fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, attributed to Blampoix, circa 1860. Value Points:

18” (46 cm.) A velvet-covered wooden stage presents a vignette of an elegant lady posed on a stool at her piano, ready for her performance. The lady has a bisque poupée head attributed to Gaultier, blue glass eyes, closed mouth, nicely painted features, pierced ears, blonde mohair flowing curls, carton torso and legs, metal hands, and is exquisitely costumed in silk and lace. The piano is of fine rosewood with ebonized finish borders and sides, bone and ebony springtension keys, and features shaped columns, ormolu two-arm candle holders and side handles, music sheet, and porcelain vase with silk flowers. When wound, the lady pianist moves in a realistic manner, turning and nodding her head as if alternating between reading the sheet music and watching her hands on the keys, while her forearms move sideways across the keyboard, and, independently up and down as her hands approach the keys. Meanwhile four operatic tunes emanate from a 52-note Swiss movement. The rear of the piano contains an access panel by which the mechanism may be viewed in action. Condition: generally excellent, well-functioning. Comments: Gustave Vichy, Paris, circa 1878, an early model from the illustrious firm, possibly created for, and exhibited at, the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris where Vichy exhibited his automata for the first time. Value Points: wonderfullypreserved luxury automaton whose fine quality of woods and piano keys enhance the realistic and complicated movements. $12,000/15,000

10. Beautiful French Bisque Bébé E.J., Size 5, with Gorgeous Antique Costume and Shoes 13” (33 cm.) Pressed bisque socket head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, brush-stroked brows with feathered detail, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose E 5 J (and artist checkmarks, on head) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1884. Value Points: beautiful wide-eyed bébé has shy, yet dramatic expression, finest quality of bisque, original body and body finish, fine antique silk costume comprising dress, undergarments, socks, French signed shoes, and woven bonnet with maroon silk ribbon band. $3500/4500

11. Rare and Pristine Grand-Sized French Bisque Bébé Jumeau, Size 16, with Original Costume and Box 33” (84 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark painted eye liner, lushly painted dark lashes, wide brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with defined space between the shaded and outlined lips, dimpled chin and lip corners, separately sculpted pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 16 (head, and artist check marks) Bébé Jumeau Diplome d’honneur (body label). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1886. Value Points: pristine unplayed with and all-original condition of the rare large size 16 bébé, having original beautiful soft mohair wig with ribbon, Jumeau earrings, Jumeau chemise with Bébé Jumeau gold lettered label, and her original size 16 Bébé Jumeau box. The bébé has flawless creamy bisque which enhances her unusual expression, and outstanding original body and body finish. $12,000/15,000

In the 1890s famous Parisian department stores commissioned bébés by Jumeau for their exclusive sales; the bébés were marked with initials to indicate that store, such as “D”, “B.L.” or “P”.

Pressed bisque swivel head on bisque shoulder plate, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, beautifully painted lashes and brows accented by rose blushed eye shadow, accented nostrils, closed mouth with heart-shaped upper lips, separately modeled pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French kid gusset-jointed body with shapely torso, gussetjointed limbs, stitched and separated fingers, wearing original wedding gown of fine Alencon lace with four scalloped-edge tiers at the front, fitted top with lace overlay, extended lace train, undergarments, silk slippers, fine tulle veil with wax orange blossom coronet, double strand of pearls and pearl earrings. Posed upon an acrobatic balancing bar is a bisque head doll with sculpted hair and painted facial features, loosely-jointed wooden limbs, wearing a fine silk theatrical costume, and seated on either side are bisquehead musicians with sculpted hair and painted features, one a lady harpist with silk gown and the other a gentleman mandolin player. 17. Outstanding Grand-Sized French Musical Automaton with Bébé Triste, Toy Theatre and Pup in Basket by Gustav Vichy 30” (76 cm.) Standing upon a flat wooden base with bronze velvet cover is a bisque-head bébé with brown glass paperweight eyes, closed mouth, painted features, extended length brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, composition lower arms, wears a maroon velvet and ivory silk dress with lace and ribbon trim, maroon velvet shoes, and lavish straw bonnet. A wicker basket decorated with green silk ribbons is attached to the side of her torso, and hiding under the basket lid is a white pup. A toy theatre is attached to the other side of her torso, decorated with rose and yellow silk draperies, a red silk curtain, and gilt metal ormolu decorations; inside the theatre is an acrobat. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Marks: 12 (head) G.V. (key). Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885, the bébé model is the rare Jumeau Triste by Emile Jumeau. When wound seven movements occur: the girl turns to the left, the curtain arises, and the acrobat performs a complicates series of movements including tumbling, reversals, and balancing, and then the curtain comes down; she then turns to the right and blows kisses, the lid of the puppy basket arises and the puppy waves a friendly greeting with one paw. Meanwhile three musical tunes (Le Petit Bleu Valse, La Cour et la Main [word illegible], and La Princess de la Canaries, listed on the underside of the theatre) merrily play. The automaton was offered in the 1884 Paris department store catalog of Au Louvre at the extraordinary price of 290 francs, about ten times the cost of a luxury doll in the same catalog, and was also distributed by G. Baker Troll of Geneva, shown in an 1880s photograph of their showroom. Only one other example is known to exist at this time, but not having the Bébé Triste head. After her father’s death at her age of 3, her mother remarried an Episcopal minister, Joseph Hutcheson, and the entire family traveled to France where the children were entered in school, and the couple traveled throughout France seeking a chateau to remove to America. They did, and the chateau was dismantled, packed and transported back to Rhode Island, occupying an entire ship. Upon its arrival in Rhode Island, the chateau was re-designed into the famed Villa Sera under the guidance of the famous architect, Charles Platt, noted for his insistence on integrating landscape into building design (www.beyondthegildedage.com/2012/02/ villasera.html). Also brought back from France with the Waterman family was Suzanne’s doll, purchased for her at the famed Parisian doll shop of Au Nain Bleu, along with the doll’s original trunk and extensive

trousseau; this doll was cherished by Suzanne throughout her entire life, and passed on to family members until its acquisition by Carolyn Guise in 1982 where it has remained until this present time. A bisque-headed couple are posed in each others arms, in formal dance position, each with blue glass eyes, beautifully painted facial features, carton torso, paper mache legs and metal hands on man, bisque forearms on woman. Each doll has its original white mohair wig in very elaborate coiffure, and is wearing its original blue and ivory cream silk ballroom costume in the 1790 style, the woman with original pearl necklace and earrings, and silk floral arrangement in hair. The woman fits upon a metal cone “skirt” that contains mechanism, and is hidden by her silk skirt. When wound, the dolls twirl about, pause, reverse, repeat, and meanwhile the entire piece glides along on three wheeledbase. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. bisque heads perfect, some restoration to woman’s fingers. Jules and, in 1959. finally to Noel. Arranged upon a red velvet covered wooden base is an elegant lady seated at a piano-harp. She has a bisque portrait head with brown paperweight inset eyes, thick dark eyeliner, painted lashes, rose-blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with beautifully-shaped outlined lips, separately-modeled pierced ears, paper mache shoulder plate designed to allow “breathing”, carton torso and legs in seated pose with glued-on stockings and heeled shoes. bisque forearms with exquisite hands, wearing elaborate and elegant silk and lace costume with pearl jewelry. The piano-harp is painted pale yellow with goldleaf painted carved borders and decorative painted colorful flowers, and has surmounting harp and sheet music rack. When the automaton is wound and lever released, the lady moves her hands across the top of the keyboard as though performing, turns her head, and “breathes” as though in awe of her own beautiful music. 26. Swiss Music Box “Britania” by B.H. Abrahams of Fine Cabinet Woods 26” (66 cm.) x 17”w. x 10”d. Styled as a miniature double-door armoire with surmounting clock and finials, the cabinet is made of fine fruitwoods and walnut veneer which are enhanced by inlay and painted designs on the doors. The double comb mechanism plays a 9” diameter music disc (eight included). Very good unrestored condition, lacking winding crank. Swiss, Barnett Henry Abrahams of Ste-Croix, circa 1900. Prior to 1895, Abrahams was a British agent for fancy goods stores in London, specializing in the importation of musical boxes. In 1895 he established the B.H. Abrahams Company in Ste-Croix, now producing his own music boxes but continuing the emphasis on placing musical movements into functional objects such as tables, cigar cabinets, or, as in this case, miniature armoires. $2500/3500

27. Very Rare Swiss Music Box with Dancing Dolls Designed for Presentation at Railroad Stations by Auguste Lassueur 26” (66 cm.) h. x 35”w. x 18”d. A large wooden case features a stagefront with theatre curtain which disguises the performance hidden behind it. After coins are inserted, the double-comb, 8-tune, sublime harmonie cylinder mechanism starts playing. Quickly, the curtain rises to reveal five bisque dolls which twirl merrily around, the movements accentuated by drum and bells percussion instruments.There is a coin-drawer below for collection of the coins. Excellent condition of both cabinet, mechanism and music, well-functioning actions and with wonderful sound. Ex-collection of Paul Gendre of Paris from which it was acquired by Ron Connor. Railroad travel was well established thoughout Switzerland by the late 19th century, and, much like the scene in today’s airport terminals, activities were introduced to railroad stations that would simultaneously entertain the waiting passengers and also make a tidy profit. Auguste Lassueur of Ste-Croix, Switzerland, hit upon the notion of placing coin-operated mechanical music boxes in the waiting rooms on the Jura-Simplon Railway Co. in Switzerland. He commissioned works from several music box makers in Ste-Croix, most notably Alfred Junod-Turin. 28. French Animated Monkey Musicians on Reed-Playing Organ by Thibouville-Lamy 28â&#x20AC;? (71 cm.) h. x 17â&#x20AC;?. x 12â&#x20AC;?. Two highly-animated be-wigged monkey musicians with paper mache heads, glass eyes, moving upper and lower lips of painted kidskin, very characterized features, painted wooden lower limbs and clothed in 18th century style aristocratic costumes are posed seated atop a rosewood cabinet while playing the violin and large cello, with wooden music racks at their feet. The cabinet contains an eightair, hand-driven, reed-playing barrel organ. When wound, they play the

instruments in a lively animated fashion, with movement of head, lips and arms. Condition: mechanism and music function well, the cabinet and monkeys are structurally excellent. Comments: Thibouville-Lamy, France, circa 1875. the firm originated as makers of musical instruments in 1790 and later added barrel organs to their trade, drawing upon the works of artisans of Mirecourt, France where that artisan trade was centered. It is speculated that the monkey figures were supplied by Theroude. Value Points: well-preserved and delightful automaton with fascinating historical background. $5000/7000

29. American CoinOperated “Regina Corona” Music Box with 61 Original Discs 68” (173 cm.) h. x 25”w. c 21”d. The fine oak cabinet with detailed carving is designed to hold a selection of up to twelve 15 ½” musical discs in a movable carriage. By turning the dial at the right side of the cabinet, a user can select a favorite tune, and after inserting a 5 cent piece, the disc raises from the storage rack and plays. After the tune is played, the disc returns to its slot in storage rack below. The clear glass front door allowed the public to watch the amazing clockwork mechanism while the performance took place. This particular Regina model features the acoustically advantageous piano sounding board. There is a hidden coin drawer which also kept safe the original winding crank. The cabinet rests on four cast iron cabriole legs. Excellent condition, working and sounding very well. Included are an impressive array of 61 original 15 ½” Regina music discs. American, Regina Music Box Company of Rahway, New Jersey, circa 1900, the model is often known as “the first jukebox”. $8000/12,000

39. French Musical Automaton “Organ Grinder with Dancing Doll” by Gustav Vichy with Au Paradis des Enfants Medallion 23” (58 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden platform is a bisque-head man with highly-characterized distinctive sculpting, brown glass eyes, closed mouth with two rows of sculpted teeth, outlined lips, sculpted moustache, painted lashes and brows, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, metal hands, wearing rich red and pale aqua silk costume with feathered hat. The man stands behind a finely-made cabinet-model wooden organ with stenciled gold outlines and yellow curtains upon which is posed a small china doll in silk costume. When wound, the organ grinder turns his head side-to-side and in a nodding circular motion, turns the organ wheel with his right arm in a complicated manner as though flexing his arm muscles; while he turns the organ wheel the doll dances about and music plays. Condition: generally excellent, music and motion function well.

38. Rare French Mechanical Pull Toy Depicting Lord of the Manor Walking His Dogs 14” (36 cm.) overall. 12”l. 11” man. Standing upon a wooden platform with metal spoked wheels and a hidden mechanical movement is a bisque head man with richly-sculpted brown hair and full beard, painted brown outlined eyes, accented nostrils, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with center accent line, wooden block torso, wire upper arms and legs, wooden lower limbs, painted boots, original silk and velvet gentleman’s walking costume. Posed at the feet of the man are two paper mache dogs. The man and the dogs are attached to the mechanism in the base by hidden metal rods, and when the toy is pulled along the man nods his head vigorously as though calling to the dogs, and tugs at their leashes, while the dogs jump up and down in an eager manner. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1870, the maker remains a mystery. Value Points: very rare early pull-toy with most appealing vignette of country gentleman walking his dogs, the gentleman with superb bisque head, distinctive sculpting, and rich enhancing glaze on hair and beard. $3500/4500

47. Extremely Rare Swiss/American New Century Disc Music Box 12” (30 cm.) x 27”w. x 23”d. A grand mahogany-cased table model disc music box which plays an 18 ½” zinc metal disc, utilizing four 78 tooth combs to create music arrangements and harmonies not possible on nearly any other type of music box. Further, what sets this model apart is not only the use of four combs, but also the making and tuning of two of the four combs in what is known as “Octavo” and which results in yet another layering of the sublime harmonie effect. The music box is in excellent original condition, and includes 16 original zinc music discs and original winding handle. Swiss/American, New Century Music Box, 7000 series, made by Paillard Cie of Ste-Croix, Switzerland in partnership with Synphonion Mfg Co of New Jersey to whom the movements were exported, assembled, cased and marketed in America for a short-lived production period of only three years (1902-1905). On April 20, 1885, Emile Jumeau deposed a model which was his first registered bébé face. The rare model was made for one or two years only. 59

When wound, the lady turns her head from side to side and nods up and down, then taps her right hand and the right hand flower opens to reveal its surprise, a brown faced monkey with glass-eyes, who turns his head from side to side and opens and closes his hinged mouth; she then taps her left hand and the other flower opens, revealing its surprise, a pair of all bisque dolls that twirl and dance about.. Two tunes play. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 8 (head) (with Lambert classic winding key). Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Comments: Leopold Lambert, circa 1880, a similar smaller model, classic face, was shown in the Lambert catalog as “Bouquetiere, No.7”. This larger size with portrait face was an earlier deluxe model, likely made on special commission. In fine wooden cabinet featuring inlays with musical and floral marquetry designs on the lid and at the front, the music box features a centrally located 20 note reed organ section in addition to drum, bells and castanette percussive instruments. 57. American Disc Music Box by Regina with Base Cabinet with 24 Original Discs 44” (112 cm.) h. x 32”w. x 24”d. The mahogany-cased table model music box is designed with turned corner columns and matching disc storage cabinet with double door front and slide-out disc storage shelf at the right side (storage cabinet is lacking lower door lock and few interior divider panels). The music box, style number 28, has a full bedplate, double comb mechanism, winding crank and 24 very good original 20 ¾” diameter discs. It bears the serial number of 31989 indicating 1899 as the bear of production. Included is a matching disc storage cabinet which allows the music box to become self-standing. The music box is in excellent original condition with strong sound, lacking one tooth on upper comb. 58. Swiss Disc Music Box “Stella Orchestral Grand” by Mermod Freres 78” (198 cm.) h. x 36”w. x 20”d. Having original deep red mahogany finish wooden case with lockable double door front and viewing glass, the mechanism has a very large ornate cast iron bedplate and massive double combs, designed to project a very loud and resonant sound quality, and uses the grand 25 11/16” diameter music disc. It also has the Mermod Freres patented projection-less design enabling the discs to easily slide in and out of the storage area in the lower portion of the upright cabinet. Included is the original winding crank and 12 excellent original music discs. Excellent overall condition, original finish on cabinet albeit lacking top pediment, original condition of mechanism. Swiss, Mermod Freres of Ste-Croix, circa 1900, their Orchestral Grand model was their largest and musically most impressive music box with a bold strong sound. The music box plays 18 ¾” discs, and has a double-comb movement, with zither attachment, deeply recessed into the case. The original front-winding crank is included, as are 11 original discs. The Carolyn Guise Collection of Martha Chase Dolls Living in Rhode Island during her collecting days, Carolyn Guise became fascinated by the dolls that were created in a backyard studio of her own home state. They were the 82

dolls of Martha Jenks Chase of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, who in the 1890s, turned her seamstress talents into the making of cloth dolls that would encourage childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagination and nurture their natural urge

to play without fear of damaging their play object. Over the ensuing decades Martha Chase dolls were produced in her backyard building called, simply, the Dollsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; House. These included play dolls, historical dolls, and

storybook dolls, and rare examples of these were sought and acquired by the late Carolyn Guise, many bearing award winning ribbons. That collection, the product of her keen and discerning collectorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye, are offered here. 83

Comments: Thomas Edison introduced his model of a “Talking Doll” in 1890, based upon the mechanical system of his table top phonographs, and utilizing bisque heads and body parts from Germany; the doll was sold in luxury stores such as Schwarz’ Toy Bazaar, whose advertising noted that the doll “recited in a childish voice one of a number of well-known nursery rhymes” utilizing a wax cylinder placed in the mechanism. The doll never reached the popularity of the somewhat similar Loiret phonograph doll of France which was marketed by Jumeau; less than 500 of the completed Edison dolls were ever sold. When wound, two mechanisms operate in synchronism: the girl lifts her head and then lifts her left arm to open the door of the cage, while, in perfect timing, the mouse timidly emerges from the cage, pauses, the girl lifts her right arm as though about to chase the mouse who then whirls around and scurries back into the cage. Music plays throughout. Marks: M (doll) (also pencil inscription “souris [mouse] inside the box). Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well.
