July 14: “Love, Shirley Temple”
July 15: “Among Friends”
A long-lost collection revealed — hidden in plain sight! For 80 years, the one-of-a-kind objects belonging to the childhood of beloved Shirley Temple have been carefully preserved in special vaults of her own home. “I’m saving history” must have been the thought of Shirley’s mother, Gertrude, and then, later, Shirley herself.
The rarest German bisque art characters, gorgeous French bébés and their costumes, French poupées and trousseaux, American cloth and paper mache folk dolls of the highest order, many bearing blue ribbon presentation awards, were among the treasures sought and perfectly preserved by the prescient North Carolina couple. Coupling good taste with a passion for the curious and unique, the Welkers assembled a perfectly blended selection of antique childhood treasures.

THE BILLIE AND PAIGE WELKER COLLECTION | JULY 15, 2015
T
he noted collection of Billie and Paige Welker takes center stage at Theriault’s July 15 auction of antique dolls at The Little Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri. The rarest German bisque art characters, gorgeous French bebes and their costumes, French poupees and trousseaux, American cloth and paper mache folk dolls of the highest order, many bearing blue ribbon presentation awards, were among the treasures sought and perfectly preserved by the prescient North Carolina couple. Coupling good taste with a passion for the curious and unique, the Welkers assembled a perfectly blended selection of antique childhood dolls. Disparate yet harmonious genres are united by common threads of rarity and artistry. The tearful-eyed Leo Moss boy seems in accord with Kammer and Reinhardt’s 107 wistful lad from across the waters, while the bisque mystery lady with pronounced nose, her beautiful complexion belying the age she represents, surely would enjoy an afternoon social with the distinguished lady doll created by Leo Moss. There are the elegant and refined (French bebes by Thuillier, Schmitt, Bru, and Halopeau) and there are the down-home but equally artistic dolls of Maggie and Bessie Pfohl, Izannah Walker, and Martha Chase. Also to be offered at the auction is the Mary Sicard collection of Door of Hope dolls, the rarest of the rare from that group, a delightful collection of early handmade paper dolls, and a wonderful illustrated voluminous correspondence from Rose O’Neill to a family friend, and a plethora of other rare and singular objects so sought after by collectors attending Theriault’s annual summer auction. x

Theriault’s Marquis | July 14-15, 2015 | Antique Doll Auctions
Build Your Antique Doll Collection with the Theriault’s knows that bidding on a doll is scary. So 45 years ago they introduced a program in which the value of rare dolls would be assured to the winning bidder.
Theriault’s classic “Gold Horse” tag appears on the wrist of every doll designated with the guarantee.
This program, unique in the auction industry and unique in the doll world, guarantees the hammer price of any doll that carries the award. So collectors can bid and buy with confidence. Still other collectors see the program as a great way to evolve their existing collection, trading in one or two Gold Horse dolls they already own toward the purchase of another Gold Horse doll they now wish to bid on and buy. We invite you to contact Theriault’s for full details about the program, and look inside the front pages or enclosed with every auction catalog to see which dolls bear the honorary designation for that auction. Love, Shirley Temple Film Costumes, Dolls, Memorabilia, 1928-1940, from the Personal Family Archives of Shirley Temple at Auction
Tuesday, July 14, 2015 Special Auction Starting Time 10AM

here are few figures in the history of film that evoke as many emotions as Shirley Temple. Not just for just those who grew up with her movies, but with multiple generations for whom this dimpled darling with 56 curls brought hope, cheer, and laughter. Shirley was more than a star, she was also a beacon of light of whom even FDR stated, “As long as America has Shirley Temple, our country will be all right.” For decades, collectors wondered whatever had became of the memorabilia from Shirley Temple’s young film life. Where were Shirley’s film costumes - the red and white polka dot dress she wore in her iconic tap dance of “Stand Up and Cheer”, the plaid dress that immortalized the song “The Good Ship Lollipop”, and the Heidi costumes, oh those Heidi costumes - and where were those hundreds of dolls sent to her by adoring fans worldwide? What of the child-size racing car given to her by Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, the autograph books filled with personal inscriptions from celebrities,

her diamond-studded Police Chief badge, the Steinway baby grand piano gifted to her by the Steinway family, and all the other mementos of a remarkable childhood? They were there, right there, in a private reserve in the home of Shirley Temple. Hidden in plain sight. Cared for, cherished, perfectly preserved, first by her mother, Gertrude Temple, and then by her. Waiting for you and for others to continue their stewardship. This was Shirley’s wish, that through the loving care of her fans, these mementos would travel worldwide, just as her films had. So that someday, any day, tomorrow, twenty years from now, a person might open a cabinet, or come around a corner, see the object, and think, “Yes, I remember Shirley.” The auction catalog includes memorabilia and objects from her childhood years, 1928-1940, and with nearly 600 lots, ranging from the truly unique and rare to simple everyday objects, there is a possibility for every collector to own

Previewing the Auction You are invited to a full-day preview on Monday, July 13 from 12:00PM to 8:00PM. Browse the nearly 600 objects in the auction, view videos, meet fellow collectors, and listen to your favorite Shirley Temple songs performed on Shirley’s own Steinway baby grand piano.
If You Are Attending the “Love, Shirley Temple” Auction The auction will be conducted at The Little Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri.
