ighly featured in this auction are dolls from the Private Collection and Museum of Judene Hansen of Lake Worth, Florida. An adventuresome and fearless collector, with a vibrant personality and a flawless eye for the unique, she has gathered over the past 20 years,

the best of the best from the world of antique and vintage dolls, always insisting on originality and pristine condition. Her dolls, she has said, enigmatically, are “a statement of who she is, who she wants to be, and who she never was”. When Judene Hansen opened Dream Doll Gallery and More in West Palm Beach, her vision extended beyond a shop offering contemporary dolls and bears. Her mission has been to encourage new collectors by featuring museum showcases of vintage and antique dolls, insisting enthusiastically that every collector should have an opportunity to see and learn about classic dolls even while beginning their collecting with new dolls. Her mission has thrived. Dream Doll Gallery has become a mecca for doll lovers throughout South Florida and beyond. Yet her generosity of spirit has extended beyond the doll world. Judene is notable in the encouragement of contemporary doll artists. At various charity auctions over a period of years she has been an avid bidder for one-of-a-kind artist dolls by both highly-acclaimed and upcoming artists, with all proceeds going to charity benefit. Notable among these charities has been CAAF (Children Affected by AIDS Foundation) who count her as among their most loyal supporters. These one-of-a-kind dolls will continue to be featured in her Florida museum and shop. Still few of the collectors who visited her shop or saw her enthusiastic bidding at charity auctions knew that in her home she had established a world-class museum of antique dolls. French dolls from Bru, Schmitt, Steiner, and Jumeau graced her cabinets, French pouées with luscious trousseaus, fine mid-19th century dolls with rare features, and always, always, the best of class enhanced by beautiful costumes and presentations. It is this antique collection, along with singular fashion rarities from mid-20th century American firms, that is offered at this auction. Note: Dream Doll Gallery and More, both the shop and museum, remains open in West Palm Beach. On display in the Museum is Judene Hansen’s world-class collection of vintage and one-of-a-kind Barbies. In addition to the Alexander dolls presented in this catalog, an auction of her other rare and vintage Alexander dolls will take place later in 2012.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Jules Steiner, circa 1877, his earliest period bisque composition-bodied bébé. 9. French Inlay Wooden Chest with Bronze Trim and Marble Top 12” (30 cm.) x 10”. The wooden chest with gracefully-curved bombe sides and front has two drawers, inlay panels on drawer fronts and sides with inlay-marquetry borders, elaborate bronze trim on the feet, apron, side columns and drawer pulls, and a curved marble-top. Excellent condition. French, 19th century, the quality of workmanship and materials suggests its production as a maitrise model. $600/900

When keywound, she daintily plays the piano, flitting her fingers across the keys in a realistic manner, turning her head side to side, occasionally nodding as though in time to the music, and now and then pausing for effect, while music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1880, deluxe models as this were offered in the finest Parisian decorative arts stores such as Giroux & Cie. Value Points: the luxury quality of the rare piece is indicated by its materials such as fine exotic woods of the piano ornamented with elaborate gilt ormolu and bone piano keys, and the inclusion of the threetune music box with original paper tune label on the piano back. 14. Very Rare Grand-sized German All-Bisque Glass-eyed Kewpie 18” (46 cm.) Bisque swivel head with flat-cut neck socket that fits to specially-modeled neck of torso, modeled brown topknot, forelock, and side curls, blue glass inset googly eyes in upward-glancing pose, painted short curly lashes, one-stroke brows, button-shaped nose, closed mouth with impish smile, one-piece torso and legs with chubby tummy, modeled blue wings, loop-jointed arms with starfish-shaped hands. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, circa 1912, an exhibition model of the beloved Kewpie, likely a special commission. 18. Extremely Rare German Bisque Googly, 318, with Original Lamp Bonnet 11â&#x20AC;? (28 cm.) doll. 15â&#x20AC;? including bonnet. Bisque socket head with plump facial shape, blue glass inset googly eyes, painted short curly lashes, feathered brows, button-shaped nose, closed mouth with dainty impish smile, brunette mohair wig, unusual cut of crown designed to accommodate a small night-light bulb which would be covered by the oversized woven bonnet, five-piece paper mache toddler body, antique costume, posed on original wooden platform with hidden electric cord running through her body and leg. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Heubach Koppelsdorf 318.7/0 Germany A.H. Schalkau DRGM (head) DRGM 333 (base). Comments: Heubach Koppelsdorf for Albin Hess, the unique novelty character lamp was registered in 1922 and the character head was registered by Hess in 1923; the unique over-sized bonnet was designed specifically to accommodate the light bulb. An article about the doll appears in German Doll Studies by Cieslik, page 270. Value Points: extremely rare googly model, made especially rare and choice be its original unique bonnet and with original stamped base. $3500/4500

An oval oil-painted porcelain depicts a young child seated on draped green velvet, lovingly gazing at the bisque poupée she is holding. Details of painting include embroidered ruffles on the girl’s dress, blue hair bow, and exquisitely detailed gown and bonnet of the poupée. These new movements make available to the dolls a modest sense of superiority as if to say ‘Go ahead Huret doll, see if you can do the same’. Condition: generally excellent, some typical restoration to body joints, bisque head and hands perfect. Marks: Huret 54 Boulv. Haussman Paris (kid torso band). Comments: Huret, circa late 1870s, this particular gutta-percha-bodied bébé presumes a very specific moment of history, positioned between the end of Huret’s gutta-percha-bodied poupée (about 1875/1880) and the beginning of Huret’s wooden-bodied bébé (about 1880). It may rightly be considered the very first of the Huret bébés, and it is not likely to have been made for more than one or two years in extremely limited numbers; only one or two other examples are known to exist. Its specific size is notable: although the doll is the exact height (18”, 45 cm) of the earlier Huret poupée, its proportions are that of a child (9 1/2” head circumference, 10” waist, 12” hips, and legs are torso scaled to match at 7 1/2” each - exactly like a child’s body would be). Even the superb bisque hands were sculpted with the plump roundedness of a child’s hand. Value Points: the rarity of the doll, its uniquely sculpted face, hands and body, is enhanced by its great beauty and quality of bisque and painting. The doll wears her original purple velvet and silk twill costume, muslin undergarments with lace trim, stockings, bonnet and original boots stamped “Huret a Paris”, and is preserved in an early box that is likely Huret original. Provenance: the bébé was first offered by Theriault’s from its original French family estate in 1996 when it was acquired by noted collector Elaine Shallenberger, and was later sold at the Shallenberger estate auction in 1999. It has been in its present owner’s collection since that time. The actual doll is photographed in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer and The Huret Book by Theimer. $30,000/40,000

Each of six all-hard-plastic dolls has socket head, sleep eyes, closed mouth, and five-piece body, with variations (as described for each below) of facial model, hair color and coiffure, painting of facial features including lips and eye shading, and costume and hair ornamentation. Background: at the end of the WWI era, Madame Alexander

looked to invigorate the doll world with new designs - in materials, in models, and in fashion. To accomplish this, she enlisted the aid of designers and moguls in the New York fashion industry who astutely determined that the flip of that coin would benefit them as well. This path, in fact, was not new. It was exactly the path that the French fashion industry had undertaken earlier in the 20th century when French artists such as Marque and Prevost-Huret had joined forces with Parisian couturiers to create artistic dolls in extraordinary costumes, to the benefit of both. The illustrious dolls that issued from the Alexander studios in the late 1940s and early 1950s have been described as “paeans to past perfection” (Madame Alexander Dolls, An American Legend). “The Godey Ladies”, “The Fashions of a Century”, and, most notably the six extraordinary ladies known only as “The Mystery Dolls” were created during that time. All are highly desirable if found today, but do not compare with “The Mystery Doll Series” of 1951. The series never appeared in the Alexander catalogs, and it is likely that they were only made in the same limited numbers as the prized bisque French Marque doll of 1915. The reason is understandable. Each face is hand-painted to the highest of artistic standards and each is ornamented with luxury details such as a rhinestone beauty mark or hand-cut lashes with geometric detail. The coiffures are meticulous, of distinctive hand-dyed colors, with highly-stylized arrangements ornamented with jewels, lace or flowers. It is not known if the fabrics used in the construction were antique, but they are, surely, from the finest fabric houses of the world comprising hand-woven lace, softest silk satins, and the daintiest of fabric flowers.

A letter accompanying her 1952 Fashion Academy Award read, "Accenting fine fabrics and meticulous workmanship with the newest in fashion trends, you have imbued dolls' clothes with all the loveliness and smartness that might well characterize a leading couturier's collection". Each of the dolls in this set owns its original gold wrist award. “The Mystery Series” of six portrait dolls are known by collectors as Champs-Elysee, Victorian Bride, Lady with Rhinestone Beauty Mark (or Judy), Deborah Ballerina, Pink Champagne (or Arlene Dahl) and Kathryn Grayson. Presumably, these were not names used by the Alexander doll firm in 1951, but they are somewhat useful in identifying the dolls to collectors today. As rare as the individual dolls might be - and that is exceptionally rare - this set is unique: it is the only complete set of six known to exist intact from one original owner. When the dolls first surfaced in 2003, the original owner noted that her grandfather had been in the New York fashion industry and had bought the dolls for her as a special gift. They had been in her possession since 1951 and she wished to have them remain together. The set was acquired by Judene Hansen and has been featured in her West Palm Beach, Florida doll museum since that time. $60,000/90,000

A faux-rosewood base with black ebony finish displays a wooden white chair upon which is seated a paper-mache clown with highly-characterized facial expression, uptilted long nose, painted white complexion, clown decorations, open mouth in beaming smile, painted teeth, brown fleecy wig, carton torso, carton legs in seated pose with hip hinging, wearing a silk and cotton costume and holding a violin and bow in his hands. When wound, the clown turns his head from sideto-side while his eyes roll up and down as though blinking, and his right arm strums the violin; his hinged hips are designed to allow his feet to tap in time to the music which is wound separately. At that time, her father worked in offices at the Plaza Hotel, near FAO Schwarz where the children’s books were sold and each time a new Miss Flora McFlimsey book was published it was added to her book shelf. Years later, Linda relates “I decided to write Mariana a letter, sharing with her that I did not like to read until I discovered her books. Well, Mariana wrote me back! We became friends! .... Spending time with her was incredibly special to me. She was so modest and humble, like Flora”. During the coming year, Linda determined that the books must be reprinted, and began a dedicated drive to that end. The anecdotal details of that project are outlined in hand-written correspondence

166. Very Rare and Beautiful French Bisque Double-Face Bébé by Leon Casimir Bru 12” (30 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, the head with two different faces that are alternately revealed by pivoting the wig and bonnet back and forward. One face depicts a pretty plump-faced child with painted brilliant blue eyes, dark upper eyeliner, painted lashes, closed mouth with two rows of painted tiny teeth; and the other features a crying child with painted features, squinting eyes with black upper eyeliner, painted lashes, scowling expression, closed mouth modeled as though open and wailing. The wig is attached to a carton hood that pivots back and forward. The bébé has classic Bru kid bébé body with gusset-jointing, bisque forearms and separately-sculpted fingers, and is wearing a beautiful maroon sateen dress, fancy bonnet, undergarments, socks, red leather shoes, and also owns original bébé pique night wear. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, circa 1880, the model was an adaptation of the earlier double-face poupée deposed by Bru, and was only made for a very few short years. Arranged upon an ebony wooden base is an elaborate arrangement of gilt-ormolu decorations and mirrors, that center a coral velvet tufted cushion. Resting upon the cushion is a bridal coronet of silk flowers, glass pearls and wax orange blossoms, and the arrangement is covered by an original glass dome. The “globe de mariage” was a French tradition of newly-wed couples, symbolizing their hopes of a blissful future, prominent throughout the 19th century in provincial towns and cities. Circa 1890. When wound, he performs a series of elaborate and convoluted acrobatic maneuvers including balancing on the back of a chair with one hand, and standing upside down balanced on the backs of two chairs; there are ten animations and music. 249. Exclusive Automaton “The Clown Conjuror with Six Secrets” in the Vichy Lineage by Michel Bertrand 38” (97 cm.) Standing upon a wooden base with a fringed burgundy velvet floor is a paper mache clown with painted clown features, glass eyes, and smiling expression, costumed by multi-colored silk and velvet costume. He stands behind a green-velvet-draped pedestal table holding a red conjuring cup and a white magic wand. When wound, he nods his head, moves his lips as though speaking to an audience, then waves his wand and raises and lowers the red conjuring cup to reveal, in sequence, six different objects: mouse, jewelry, flowers, goldfish, dice and bird in a cage. The complicated movements are achieved by eight hidden cams, and there is a six-tune antique musical movement. Condition: generally excellent. movements and music function well. Comments: created by Michel Bertrand of Switzerland, 1993, under special commission, inspired by an earlier piece in the Vichy inventory. Bertrand was the final successor to the Vichy firm and incorporated many of the original Vichy parts into his works, such as this example.
