Introduction It was 1851 in Paris and Adelaide Huret had just registered her design for a new style of doll body, a body able to be articulated and to be dressed and undressed and dressed again, thus inspiring, too, a whole new world of doll fashion. No longer was doll making to be simply artisanal, homemade or left-over models of little people made for exhibitions or parades. Dollmaking, and its sister world of doll fashion, had become its own industry. During the next 15 years more than 35 separate deposes were registered in Paris concerning the doll — mostly, its body, its construction and its materials. How could the doll’s body be articulated for realistic movements? Could the head to attached in such a manner as to allow it to nod? Could the doll sit or simply stand? Could the eyes sleep? Could they have real lashes? Could they cry or even speak? How would a wig be attached? And what material would be most durable (i.e. playable), most affordable, and most artistic, all at the same time? These were real concerns and they were addressed seriously, imaginatively, and prodigiously. It can truly be said that this short period was the golden age of the French doll. Now fast forward 100 years. It is New York in the post WWII era. A time of new energies, new ideas, and the ambition to propel these ideas forward. Fashion was, pardon the pun, back in style. New materials — specifically, plastic — developed for wartime purposes were ready to be put to a more peaceful use. And certain dollmakers, such as Madame Alexander, were ready to re-introduce the world of high fashion to dolls. While today’s collectors focus on the haute couture of the American 1950s dolls, it is worthwhile to also pay attention to the new forms (the doll bodies and movements) that allowed these fashion to really take shape. Yet were these forms really new? Or were innovations such as the twist ‘n turn waist
of Barbie, the high-heel feet of Elise or Cissette, the bendable or walking legs of Ginny, or the comb-able hair of Miss Revlon — actually re-invented designs of the very concepts that had appeared in French fashionable dolls more than a century before? And was it simply the material — plastic now rather than wood or gutta percha or metal or kid — that was new? In a second way, the 1950s golden age of the American doll echoed the 1860s golden age of the French doll. Curiously, neither of these decades was overly concerned with the head model. In France, for example, only one or two of the 35 registered deposes approached the subject of the head model. And in America, the facial models of each firm — the Cissy’s, the Ginny’s, the Barbies — remained consistent year after year, altering their appearance by coiffure or style of painting. The facial model of Barbie, for example, remained constant for its first eight years of production, not unlike the classic face of the French Gaultier poupée a century earlier. It is easy to understand why the two century-apart decades paralleled each other in the quest for perfect body style and lack of paramount interest in the facial model. It is because, in both cases, it was all about the costume. The fashion, the style, the haute couture were of paramount importance. Collectors of the fashion dolls (whether the dolls are ladies or children) from either era are correct to admire the meticulous care that went into the selection of fabrics, design, accessories, and the very way the costume “sat” upon the doll body. These exquisite dolls, whether of the 1860s or the 1950s, are truly miniature historical fashion models, and the true doll connoisseur acknowledges this. x
