“WITH JUST ONE APPLE” A CATALOGED MARQUIS AUCTION OF FINE ANTIQUE DOLLS Paul Cezanne, the celebrated French PostImpressionist artist wrote, “With an apple I will astonish Paris”. And that he did. In the smaller world of dolls, one might also bestow that praise on Emile Jumeau who throughout his decades-long reign of the French doll world continued to astonish all with his imaginative designs. Notable among the Jumeau designs was the Series Fantastique introduced in 1892, coincidentally during the very peak of the Cezanne era, and notable among the models of that series was the virtually neverfound 218, portrait of an astonished child. It is that rare doll that highlights Theriault’s eagerly-awaited annual Summer Marquis auction to be conducted July 10 and 11 in Annapolis Maryland at Theriault’s studio gallery. Two important private collections are headlined at the July Marquis auctions. Saturday will center on Part I of the Luann Guleserian Collection. Over several decades the very private California collector sought the rare and unusual of French and German bisque. Her dolls range from the stunningly beautiful bébé by Thuillier which years ago appeared on the cover of a Theriault’s catalog to the beloved early Simon and Halbig series such as “Wendy” and model 128. Small dolls were her favorites and collectors will be thrilled at the number of petite cabinet size dolls to be offered ranging from rare Steiner bébés to gorgeous Bru bébés in sizes 1 and 2. The Saturday auction also includes a wonderful collection of Galluba and Hoffman bathing beauties, wooden-bodied French poupées including the very rare marked Lily, all-bisque mignonettes, fine early wooden and paper mache
dolls, American cloth, alluring automata, and unusual rarities such as a remarkable salesman’s sample barber chair and rarest of teddy bears including 28” Steiff center-seam, Steiff Petsy, and Jopi musical bear. The fun continues on Sunday, July 11 with a plenitude of more wonderful French and German dolls, and features the private collection of well-known Texas collection, Mary Lu Stallings. In addition to her fine antique dolls, she seriously collected the dolls from her own childhood remembrance, particularly the celebrity dolls of the 1930s as well as the entire Patsy and Skippy family of which the auction offers remarkable little-known examples. Too, there are dolls from Dewees Cochran studio, the soughtafter Cissy fashion doll by Madame Alexander, Lenci, more Steiff rarities, French toys, miniature rooms, and all the surprises you’ve come to expect at a Theriault’s Marquis auction. Both days promise wonderful childhood treasures, 1780-1950, that will keep collectors wide-eyed and entertained. A special inclusion in the July Marquis auction is the early miniature glassware collection of Cynthia Mangee, many of which pieces were photographed in the book, Toy Glass, by Doris Lechler. The “Series” Bébés of Jules Steiner in the July Marquis Auction It is fair to say that the 1880s were the halcyon days of the classic French bébé. The bébé had proven its mettle in the market and the poupée lady doll had lost favor, now bowing to this new child doll. The major dollmakers such as Jumeau, Bru and Schmitt paid homage, too, feeding the public demand with a plenitude of exquisite dolls. Their dolls were costumed each season with the finest au courant styles, their bodies evolved to allow facile child play, and while the facial model of these firms evolved a bit with new styles of painting (pale or creamy or rosy), and eye colors and wig styles and costumes, each firm’s basic bébé model remained constant. With one exception. Those were the bébés of the Jules Steiner firm during the 1880s, created during the Jules Achille Bourgoin ownership/ management era. Those were the bébés marked “Sie” (series) and a letter marking A, B, C, D, E, F, or G, sometimes along with the red ink script signature of Monsieur Bourgoin. Each of these models is unique. Each is quite rare. And they are, simply put, compelling and beautiful.

10” example, also size 3/0, is the elusive Series G. The model was described by Dorothy McGonagle in her book The Dolls of Jules Steiner as the “most compelling and most sublime” of the Steiner dolls, and this example offered is surely so. A larger 19” example of the Series G is also offered wearing her very fine original blue silk dress. The Series E model is especially charming, notable for her very large eyes and gentle smile, acquired by Luann Guleserian from Theriault’s auction of the Puppen and Spielzeug Museum of Vienna. The model is described by McGonagle as “one of the more whimsically appealing faces found on Jules Steiner’s bébés” and that she is. And finally, there is the Series B, with equally compelling eyes and a most captivating expression. Each of the “series” model bébés from the Jules Steiner firm is a precious treasure, not only rarely found, as it seems that few were produced during their 1880s decade of production, but also captivating in expression and of very fine quality. The Very Rare Model 218 from Jumeau’s “Series Fantastique” About 1890 the salon pieces of French automaton maker, Leopold Lambert, were in high demand. And while many clients were content with the pretty classic bébé who daintily powdered her face while admiring her image, Lambert saw the opportunity of presenting automaton with an expressive face that more clearly fit with the mechanical action. How about a child who has just broken her favorite doll? Shouldn’t she be crying? (Clark #18) Or a baker exhibiting his playful kitten hidden under a brioche? A mischievous smile surely accentuated that action! (Clark #170). But where could he find the models that evinced such expression? Where else but his fellow entrepreneur Emile Jumeau? And thus, the art character models of Jumeau began their life. These automaton heads included various exotic persons as well as laughing, crying and whistling children. And there the Lambert/Jumeau story takes a twist. The Jumeau Book by François Theimer and Florence Theriault writes of this: “So pleased was Jumeau with this sculptural project that the decision was made to also produce the characters in bébé form…So successful was his endeavor that character bébé models were then added to the line that were first made as automaton heads”. Putting his design team to work, Jumeau reworked the shape of the neck into the classic “light-bulb” shape of the bébé head, rather than the straight-sided neck needed by Lambert. He worked to create a variation in size although petite or

grand sizes were never presented. The bébés were offered in sizes 9,10,11,12, and 13 only, with the exception of models 203 and 211 which were also produced in size 8. Jumeau called these bébés “Series Fantastique”. Yet, sadly, these wonderful dolls failed on the marketplace. Perhaps they were too expressive for a clientele that wanted an idealistically pretty doll for their child. Perhaps it was their expense; the 1899 inventory of the Jumeau firm cites their price which was nine times the price of his standard bébé. At any rate, the bébés appear to have only been presented on special commission or as exhibition models during the short 8 years of their existence.
