You Are the Foundation
Who Are Our Partners? Our partners are our fundholders, grantees, donors, referring professionals and volunteers. Working together we are creating a stronger Foundation and making our part of the world a better place. Fundholders: You recommended a record $13 million in grants in 2009. You walk into the office and offer your vision of a better future. You are paying it forward, paying it back, honoring a loved one, making sense of tragedy. You are the Foundation. Grantees: Together we have met, planned and dreamed. Your ideas are inspiring generosity and collaboration. Your work is saving the way of life we cherish in western Nevada. You are the Foundation.
4
Donors: Whether you are sending a check, giving through a payroll deduction or adding us to your will, you are putting your money where your heart is. You are taking action to make a difference. Our work depends on you. You are the Foundation. Referring professionals: You are estate planners, attorneys, financial managers, and accountants. Each time you refer a client to the Foundation you become part of the good we accomplish together. You are the Foundation. Volunteers: Some of you are board members; some are fundholders as well. Some of you spend countless hours reading scholarship applications or mountains of grant applications. You guide us. You give us courage. You bring your perspective and enthusiasm to the table. You are the Foundation.
Thank you for creating some kind of wonderful. 5
Norma Webster, Chair, Board of Trustees and Chris Askin, CSPG, CFRE, President and CEO 2009 was a great year for the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. We saw a tremendous recovery from the economic downturn of 2008 as our invested assets came roaring back with investment returns of 25-27%. We asked donors to help the community during the great time of need, and they responded with $13 million in grants‌ almost tripling grants made in 2008. In fact, our Community Foundation is ranked third, out of 700 community foundations nationwide, for having given away the greatest percentage of our assets. Grants grants grants‌ that was the theme in 2009. Over 600 grants benefitted more than 200 charities. We saw an increase in grants targeted to meet specific community needs, and the Community Partnership Grant Program, highlighted on pages 14-15, had a tremendous impact. We are so proud of the good work this program is supporting, financed by 6
fundholders at the Foundation and friends in the community. The stories on pages 8-13 highlight three of the grants and the impact they made. Join us in building this program by making a contribution. Our gifts pooled together and strategically awarded will have the biggest effect. Scholarship awards from the Community Foundation continue to grow with 91 students receiving scholarships this year. Dozens of scholarship selection committees convene each year to review the applications and select the winners. Many students receive multi-year scholarships, so now we get to celebrate those who are graduating each year. Helping students attend college – and watching their success – is one of the most rewarding experiences our fundholders can have. We have also seen a tremendous increase in the number of referrals from professional advisors to the Foundation to work with residents on estate gifts. We feel honored to become a trusted member of a client’s advisory team and reward their confidence in us with excellent service, now and when their gift is received. Although many of these generous donors wish to remain anonymous, we recognize those who are willing to let their decision become public by becoming members of our Legacy Society, which is highlighted on page 16. 2010 has already been an active year for us. We hope you will join us as we strive to make a difference in the place we call home.

Crisis Call Center Text Messaging System Grant
Two years of Community Partnership Grant funding helped give the Crisis Call Center the means to develop a first in the nation innovative text messaging crisis intervention. Text messaging is how teens “talk with one another. By introducing a text intervention system, the Crisis Call Center is creating a way for teens to get through their difficult times in a format they are comfortable using. This innovative service is leading the way in how crisis intervention is approached, and the Crisis Call Center is working with other call centers around the nation to provide this service to all parts of the country. The Crisis Call Center embodies the values of partnership as they link and work with police departments and the United Way, take after hours calls for Child Protective Services, Elder Protective Services and Safe Embrace, and now collaborate with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Advocacy Resource Center. Fundholders, because you supported the

Forging Ahead Side by Side
The Community Partnership Grant program, supported by fundholders and community contributions, granted the Tahoe Rim Trail Association funds to help bring in Amanda Schwantes, Americorps Volunteer, to be the Trails Program Manager. Amanda joined AmeriCorps after graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in Environmental Science and Chemistry. She spent her college summers doing trail work in New Hampshire, environmental research in Costa Rica, and restoration work in the Smoky Mountains. Now, as an AmeriCorps volunteer, she has added to these environmental experiences by working for a local nonprofit, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA). As their Trails Program Manager, she coordinates over 500 volunteers to build and maintain trails. These volunteers spend over 7,500 hours scouting, building, and maintaining the 165-mile

Tahoe Rim Trail. Without the financial backing from the Community Foundation, the TRTA would not have an AmeriCorps volunteer and thus the support necessary for the trail work volunteer program. Amanda loves working with volunteers in the field, instructing youngsters on how to take out roots with a Pulaski and sharing in their excitement after hauling a huge root out of the ground. A certain satisfaction comes from using your hands and simple tools to construct a rock wall or other trail structure from only the natural materials found on site. Amanda works to ensure that each volunteer has an enjoyable experience so that our volunteer trail builders will continue to give back to the Tahoe Rim Trail and their community. She states, “From this experience, I have gained confidence, leadership experience, significant insight into the nonprofit world and, of course, a life long love of volunteering.

Powerful, Simple, Effective
HAWC Grant for Digital X-Ray
The HAWC medical clinic serves low-income and uninsured residents of our region. Their large waiting room is alive with people of all ages—young parents with babies lining the walls, grandmothers, and injured or ill people sitting in the large banks of seats. The room hums with a symphony of languages from around the globe. HAWC is equipped to deal with its large volume of patients thanks, in part, to a 3-year Community Partnership Grant (CPG) that helped purchase a digital X-ray processor. The aim of the CPG program is to substantially help organizations sustain and grow in ways that are overlooked or under appreciated by traditional donors. Technology equipment upgrades may not be on the top of donors’ minds but can help an organization accomplish its mission. Fast, simple and efficient, the digital software creates a viewable X-ray image on a computer monitor in about a minute; the image is then saved to a disc for the patient’s use. Every digital X-ray image saves HAWC $1 over film images, and this year alone 6,294 images were taken. A typical X-ray
12
Grant Profiles
set of images and CD cost a patient at HAWC $50—just 10% of the cost of the typical emergency room X-ray. Dr. Mylan Anderson expects that HAWC will serve an even larger client list as more people are becoming unemployed or losing their insurance benefits.
Mylan Anderson, M.D.

Community Partnership Grant Program
This, the third year of the Community Partnership Grant program, brings together contributions from fundholders as well as donors outside the Foundation. The efforts of our tremendous volunteer selection committee and participation from our nonprofit partners work to strengthen our community. We gratefully acknowledge a significant gift from the Ronald L. Olson Foundation to support the Community Partnership Grant Program. The Partnership Grants in 2009 totaled $145,948 for previous multi-year grants and 21 new grants to regional organizations. This is quite simply our—your— Foundation’s resource for building a better community. Organizations that have their nonprofit status in our region for at least five years are invited to apply for a Community Partnership Grant. Updated information about the program’s specific focus and grant criteria, along with the request for proposal, are posted on our website in February.

Legacy Society
Begin a family charitable endowment with your estate gift. Your chosen heirs will have the responsibility and the great satisfaction of expressing your family values by recommending grants. This priceless experience will change not only their lives and their children’s lives, it will help re-create the community. Your legacy of caring will live on through their decisions. If you choose to leave a gift to a nonprofit’s endowment at the Foundation or to a cause you care about, for example, caring for the City’s rose gardens, the Community Foundation will follow your directives and make sure the gift is used exactly as you intend, forever. We appreciate Legacy Society members’ willingness to add their names to this list. By doing so we are able to include them at Foundation events and to thank them personally. We hope their actions will inspire you, too, to join with them and build a better future. It is the opportunity of your lifetime.

Chris Askin 775-333-5499 18
The Community Fund – A Good Option for Your Bequest Together you and your neighbors, and perhaps your family before you, have built this community. Now we can all do something profound to sustain it and help the people who will live here after us. You can help create a place where your grandchildren will want to live. Think of your community as one of your heirs. Leave 5 percent of your estate to the Community Fund. Together your gift, when combined over time with your neighbors’ and friends’ gifts, will grow to a deep and unending resource to meet pressing community needs. Your gift will make it possible to really help in times of crisis. Your gift will address the deep problems that take time and money to change. We cannot know what challenges our grandchildren will face. We do know that a gift to the Community Fund will always be relevant, important to our region and, most of all, available when needed.

Thomas Vetica Memorial Fund Thomas Vetica lived a lifelong commitment to social justice. Through his position as a community builder with housing and urban development, he built partnerships to provide housing for less fortunate members of our northern Nevada community. He was devoted to the idea that through partnership, education, respect of culture and diversity we could achieve real solutions to social problems plaguing our community and our world. To support his legacy, the Thomas Vetica Memorial Fund is established to be used for grants to homeless service providers working with the Reno Area Alliance for the Homeless.

Washoe County Senior Services Compassionate grants in 2008 and again in 2009 from a donor advised fund allowed Washoe County Senior Services to offer the Case Aid Project. This project provided help for seniors at high risk for nursing home placement. Without local family support many seniors have difficulty managing the routine tasks of daily living. Scheduling medical appointments, transportation, remembering their doctor’s instructions and managing finances become overwhelming and health problems ensue. The extra attention, visits and proactive interventions from the Case Aid worker led to a decrease in crisis and addressed a gap in service recognized by seniors, social workers and medical professionals. This grant not only extended the safety and length of life for our senior neighbors but enhanced life’s livability.

City of Reno Charitable Fund K-9 Unit Support In Reno six officers and six dogs are partners who bring out the best in each other while protecting us. Five German Shepherds are trained to detect drugs, protect their handler, search buildings and open areas, apprehend suspects, search for article and evidence, and track. One Labrador Retriever is a specialist, used only for detecting explosives. You can support the Reno Police Department K-9 Unit. Give to the City of Reno Charitable fund. Your donation pays for more dogs, training for handlers and dogs, educational classes for trainers and handlers, and badly needed equipment which (because they are dogs and do not treat the equipment with respect) does not have a very long life.

Alan G. Bain – Initiative in Science or Math “I’ve spent my most enjoyable times designing, fabricating, modeling and studying. I have had a shop of some kind since I was 9 years old, starting with a converted wood shed, and have worked on projects since before then. My goal with this award program is to reward curiosity and interest in something out of the ordinary in either science or math. I hope this award for doing a bang-up job on whatever project you accomplished will cause your chest to grow by at least five inches. This mathematics and science project award is designed to catch young people who have not limited themselves to what is expected. Churchill County High School students 9-12th grade may be eligible.” For more information on the Alan G. Bain Initiative in Science or Math, check our website nevadafund.org/scholarships.

I was one of the recipients of the Phil and Jennifer Satre Harrah’s Employee Scholarship during the 2005-2009 academic years. I am extremely grateful for the tremendous gift you gave. I recently graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana, Magna Cum Laude with a 3.7 grade average. I majored in Mathematics with a minor in Chemistry – pre-med emphasis. If it were not for the gift you gave, I would not have been able to attend Centenary. It is amazing that you give the gift of an education to students every year. One day I hope to follow in your footsteps and help students I believe in. Naomi Will
