You Renew, Sustain and Transform You are the Foundation Working together in a very down to earth manner our fundholders, Board members, referring professionals, grantees and volunteers make some pie-in-the-sky things happen. Fundholders: You are acting on your dreams and creating a better Nevada through your gifts. You recommended nearly $6 million in gifts in 2010. We love to work with you and your optimism is contagious. Grantees: You can do more with a buck than anyone should have to. Your resourcefulness and commitment to your mission inspire giving. The result of your work encourages loyalty from our fundholders and even more generosity when you need it most.
4
Donors: Many of you found us through memorial gifts. You use our convenient website to make gifts honoring those you love. We are here forever, in the good times and bad. Let our first introduction not be our last conversation. Referring professionals: You are changing the world. Each time you discuss giving with your clients, with each charitable bequest you encourage, you help your clients be their best, and you and our region are transformed as well. Volunteers: The hours you log, the meetings you attend, the mountains of applications you read make us humble. Thank you for creating the vision and engine that drive the Foundation.
Together we give and we work to create the Nevada of our dreams.

Norma Webster, Chair, Board of Trustees and Chris Askin, CSPG, CFRE, President and CEO Last year was a year of transformation as the Community Foundation of Western Nevada helped fundholders, like you, make grants that changed lives and impacted our region in powerful ways. By the end of the year, the Foundation passed the $50 million mark in total grants awarded since qualifying as a non-profit in 1998. Thanks to you, literally thousands of grants to hundreds of charities are having a cumulative impact that can be seen and felt. Each of us can delight in the opening of the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum through a culmination of gifts by a combination of fundholders who gave the needed early and sustained support. It was a year of new alliances and partnerships with charities and organizations and donors. NV Energy entrusted the Foundation to administer its far reaching Powerful Partnership Scholarship program and established the SAFE endowment to help people in need pay their power bills. 6
Major projects funded by donors in the school districts, particularly in Douglas County, began to take shape as students were given access to new technologies. New scholarships were established, and the Foundation began to work in earnest with existing foundations and organizations to help them achieve their philanthropic goals. During the year, the Foundation worked with twelve families who have generously committed more than $24 million in future contributions through their estate. We are reaching out to our community in new ways. By receiving unusual assets such as real property and leaseholds, the Foundation is helping to structure charitable gifts in ways that are cost effective and efficient. We are bringing you free estate planning classes, “It’s Your Estate,” a new cooperative arrangement with a dozen local charities. Through our website, you can explore potential gift arrangements, look at illustrations, and download template documents, all in the privacy of your home or office. This year fundholders can access their charitable funds online, recommend grants, and research community needs, all with the support of our staff who are just a call or an email away. We are humbled by your generosity and honored to be a trusted partner of both you and your professional advisors. There is no end to the good we can do, together, as we work to transform the region and our quality of life.

From Creative Spark to Open Doors — You Did It Three fundholders tell you why making capital gifts to the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum through the Community Foundation is satisfying. From Phil and Jennifer Satre, Satre Family Fund: It was easy to fall in love with the concept of the Nevada Discovery Museum. The museum promises be a place where children can learn by doing and, as a result, develop a love of knowledge and desire for further exploration. We love knowing that our grandchildren and all the community’s children have the fruit of our collective imagination and philanthropy to share. As with other gifts we have made, the Community Foundation made our multi-year donation effortless. Having grandchildren with whom we share this playground for the mind is icing on the cake! From Gary and Sher Muhonen, the Muhonen Fund: The Nevada Discovery Museum is a powerful way to spark curiosity and creativity in our children. It is a wonderful addition to our community that will impact thousands of kids every year. The Community Foundation helped us by monitoring the Museum’s progress and releasing the funds as milestones were reached. This process worked very well for us, and it was great having the Community Foundation working with the Museum to maximize the outcome of our donation. It’s often hard to get the first donors on board. We felt that making the donation through the Community Foundation would add visibility and credibility to the Museum. 8
Jennifer Satre supports the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum for her granddaughter, Molly, and all of our western Nevada children.
From Ranson and Norma Webster, the Norma and Ranson Webster Foundation: The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum was a terrific opportunity for us to put our fund to work and be part of creating a cultural and educational venue that is of lasting value. A museum of this caliber is one we can all be proud of and support. It was important to us that the facility be built and opened without the weight of an overwhelming mortgage. By working through the Community Foundation on our capital gift to the Nevada Discovery Museum, we felt confident that our grant priorities were recognized. 9
Fundholders Doug and Cindy Petersen.
Fundholder’s Gifts Transform Lives, Including Their Own What started out as “grant in the mail” has become an avocation and means to a very full and happy life. Doug and Cindy Petersen moved to Gardnerville from South Lake Tahoe six years ago with Cindy’s mother, Sylvia Mitchell. Cindy began volunteering with the Young at Heart group at the Senior Center, initially to encourage her reluctant mother to branch out and make some local friends. Sylvia is now the life of the party at the Senior Center. Her busy days revolve around her friends, activities and volunteer work at the center. 10
The Senior Center in Gardnerville hums with activity and conversation during the “Soup Hour.”
The Petersens make sustaining gifts to the Soup Program which passes out warm, nourishing bowls of soup each weekday, an hour before lunch is served, to encourage patrons to come early and socialize before the noon meal served by the county. Seniors from all walks of life and income levels can be found in the dining room catching up on the latest town news, playing cards or telling jokes while enjoying a bowl of soup together. Doug and Cindy Petersen are modest people unaccustomed to being called influential. But their generous and outgoing personalities, important financial support and willingness to commit long hours to the senior programs they love, influence and motivate the small community of Gardnerville to involve and support the senior population. These days both generations of the Petersen family spend most of their time at the Center volunteering and helping seniors in some way. The building vibrates and hums with happy, active people reflecting the spirit in the hearts and smiles on the Petersen’s faces.
Sylvia Mitchell Serves soup at the Douglas County Senior Center at least three days a week in addition to her other involvement with Young at Heart.

Just How Good Will You Feel? Your Scholarship Fund is Your Personal Legacy
One look at Nadine Stegelmeyer’s face will tell you how meaningful it is to help Shelby Fowlkes through college. Nadine had planned to endow her fund, The Eugene F. and Nadine G. Stegelmeyer Scholarship, through an estate gift. Instead she decided to begin the scholarship now so she could have the fun and enjoyment of meeting “her” scholars and encouraging them on their path in education and teaching. Shelby is attending the University of Nevada, Reno. 12
Fundholder Kim Becker enjoyed connecting with Daniel Hansen and his family at the 2011 Scholarship Ice Cream Social. Kim Becker established the Jack and Jane Becker Memorial Scholarship to honor her parents. Kim’s father was a physician in Reno. Daniel is studying medicine at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and is pictured with his wife, Ali, and youngest son. Brian and Nancy Kennedy had an idea to create an unusual “fill in the funding hole” scholarship in order to help families say “yes!” when their child is accepted to one of the 20 finest schools in the nation. Thanks to the Kennedy Foundation Scholarship, Michaela Wright, pictured here with Nancy Kennedy, will be attending Georgetown University without the burden of student loans or an overwhelming work schedule. “Meeting and interviewing our applicants, and choosing one, was extremely rewarding. Michaela Wright, our first recipient, is a perfect candidate. She is a wonderful student, earning early acceptance at GU, an athlete, a leader and has an excellent work ethic. We are thrilled to help her achieve her goals.” – Brian and Nancy Kennedy

Partnership Grant Program
HAWC Community Health Center’s 2010 Partnership Grant provided eye exams and glasses to 90 homeless children and adults.
Connecting us through a common mission of effective good works that enrich community life, charitable organizations across northern Nevada were awarded Partnership grants. The 25 organizations (opposite) applied for and won a $5,000 grant for a total of $100,000. Support for the Partnership Grant program came from combined donations from Foundation fundholders.

Legacy Society Learned to ski at Sky Tavern? Endow a gift so your great grandchildren will too! Improve a library you love or train teachers to teach your favorite subject. Maintain the city rose garden or a park near your home or support the purchase of open space. It is your life’s gift, your passion, your legacy, and we can help you make it happen. Your bequest will influence the future of our community. Include a percentage of your estate to benefit a cause or organization you feel passionate about. This may well be the single largest gift you will ever make in your lifetime and will affect generations. We appreciate the Legacy Society members’ willingness to add their names to this list. By doing so we are able to include them at Foundation events and to thank them personally. We hope their commitment will inspire you to join with them and build a better future. It is the opportunity of your lifetime.

The Community Fund – A Good Option for Your Bequest Together you and your neighbors, and perhaps your family before you, have built this community. Now we can all do something profound to sustain it and help the people who will live here after us. You can help create a place where your grandchildren will want to live. Think of your community as one of your heirs. Leave five percent of your estate to the Community Fund. Together your gift, when combined over time with your neighbors’ and friends’ gifts, will grow to a deep and unending resource to meet pressing community needs. Your gift will make it possible to really help in times of crisis. Your gift will address the deep problems that take time and money to change. We cannot know what challenges our grandchildren will face. We do know that a gift to the Community Fund will always be relevant, important to our region and, most of all, available when needed. Raymond C. Rude Foundation The Rude Foundation Fund was established to support competitive springboard diving across the globe. The late Ray Rude made the first aluminum diving board in 1949 out of an aircraft wing panel for a friend who needed a diving board for his pool party. The Duraflex diving board was first used in Olympic competition in 1960. Since 1960, Duraflex diving boards have been the only diving board used in the Olympics and all major international competitions. Rude started the Duraflex Corporation in Sparks, Nevada, now run by his daughter.

Chantal Claire Hager Memorial Foundation Chantal Claire Hager passed away unexpectedly at the age of 19. Chantal planned to be a psychologist in order to help others deal with challenges in their lives. Her deep care for others was matched by how deeply her feelings could be hurt, something understood by those who knew her well. During the last few years, Chantal very much wanted to, but never could, overcome the eating disorder that took her life. In her memory, the law firm of Hager and Hearne has established The “Chantal Claire Hager Charitable Foundation in order to educate young people and parents about the devastating impact of anorexia and bulimia on families.
