Welcome!
Thomas J. Hall, Chair, Board of Trustees and Chris Askin, CSPG, CFRE, President and CEO
Not Your Father’s Oldsmobile! Perhaps you remember that old car commercial. If you do, then you can draw a pretty good comparison to the changes that have taken place at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. The Community Foundation is not reinventing itself from the ground up because we have, to continue the car analogy, a terrific frame and suspension and we handle well in Nevada, on and off road. We did recently redesign, or “rebrand,” ourselves to reflect our growing scope of work in the community and throughout northern Nevada. So how did our brand change? New logo, new colors and fonts, but the real benefit is clear messages that convey who we are and what we do. You can see the extent of these changes at nevadafund.org; here is a sampling.
Together, we can infuse a circle of change within our community. We facilitate philanthropic solutions, connect you with the right causes and serve as your expert on giving. Imagine the good we can foster and the difference we can make with your charitable investment.
2
In order to bring about change in the community, we’ve changed ourselves and accomplished much this year.
o We moved into a new spacious modern office with a large community meeting room. o You’N-I, the Community Foundation’s community-wide initiative to help youth who are experiencing homelessness, is developing new resources. o The Community Foundation helped put together funding to create “the YOU,” a downtown resource center for youth. o The Community Foundation Board has boldly approved making local impact investments that will generate a social benefit to our community. o We’re venturing east to help rural Nevada communities build their philanthropy. As the community is growing new opportunities, so is the Community Foundation. Three new themes decorate our new office walls to guide us daily.
Care
Our enthusiasm for what’s imaginable is infectious.
Connect We bring the right people together with the best intentions on serving our community fostering even bigger opportunities for those involved.
Engage We are actively involved as a solutions-minded partner, seeking results that are beneficial to all. The Community Foundation has always been all about action and results, and that has not changed. Planning and talking matter, but planning is not effective without implementation. The true engagement of donors, service providers, and those in need is revealed in the strong collaboration that brings about a circle of change—of positive results and impact. As you read through this annual report you’ll notice the changes and the stories of impact. We are grateful for your continued support and, together, we are your Community Foundation of Western Nevada. Thomas J. Hall Chair, Board of Trustees

Services Make the Difference to the Bingham Family Fund The Community Foundation connects fundholders to their charitable passions and helps them engage in satisfying and powerful giving without the cost or work of a private foundation. Dave and Jan Bingham are savvy grantmakers. Working closely with Tracy Turner, Community Foundation Chief Philanthropy Officer and the nonprofit organizations they support, the Binghams make gifts that have a profound impact on many lives. The couple’s commitment has been pivotal in preserving acres and acres of beautiful Sierra land for the birds, the animals and forest, and for all of us — forever. Bingham fund grants have modernized elementary school classrooms in Douglas county and, by doing so, helped create a community that attracts families and sustainable business.
Bold Grants Given Wisely
Dave is excited by “science that inspires” and, through the Bingham Charitable fund, was one of the earliest donors for the Perlan project. His vital support came when the pressurized sailplane that will fly to the edges of outer space was just a vision.
8
Jan and Dave Bingham.
The Bingham fund grant helped top scientists work until Airbus stepped up as a major sponsor to help take the Perlan project to the launch pad. Tracy worked closely with the Binghams and the International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF) to give a major grant to support medical research into this rare type of bone marrow cancer. IWMF published an in-depth article in the medical foundation’s magazine about the due diligence and research performed on the Binghams’ behalf to make sure the grant would have the impact they desired. 10% of the Bingham’s grant will support member services and 90% of the grant will support two cutting-edge medical research projects for five years. The Binghams, research partners in the true sense of the word, will be acknowledged in scientific journals reporting the research outcomes. Recently Jan accompanied Tracy and Community Foundation staff on local site visits. She learned about key grant opportunities that could make a decisive difference in the lives of unaccompanied, runaway and homeless youth in Reno. What are you interested in accomplishing? With the philanthropic service team working for you the sky is the limit. 9

We work together to infuse change and create results.
When You Have a Fund, You Have a Staff The Community Foundation takes care of the administration and operations of high level charitable giving so you can focus on the joy. A fund is also an ideal alternative to reduce operational and investment management costs.
If you are thinking about establishing a private foundation, consider a fund with the Community Foundation instead.
Resourceful and Efficient Let the Community Foundation handle the details so you can focus on giving. Several options available to you include: o Convert a private foundation into a named donor advised fund. o Donate the private foundation’s required 5% payout to the Community Fund, to the Partnership Grant Fund, or to a designated fund at the Community Foundation. o Establish a Supporting Organization within the Community Foundation.
Professional Team We are a results-oriented organization and are committed to bringing you excellent service, professionalism, and knowledge.
True Anonymity is Possible We take your best interests to heart to meet your goals. Our team will make sure you get the recognition you desire or, if you wish, you can remain completely anonymous. Our priority is to help you make a meaningful difference.

A Place at the Table for those who Stand Up for Community
When working on community-wide issues, it is vital that we create a place for people to speak freely and think creatively. Equally important is that the Community Foundation office is a place for staff to listen to those affected, to those who are willing to fund, and to those who have unique knowledge and perspectives about community challenges and opportunities for positive change. 14
It is vital that we create a place to speak freely and think creatively.
The Community Foundation’s spacious conference room in our new office allows us to invite nonprofits, government representatives, and donors to meet and discuss the big issues that affect our community.

Everybody Can Be A Philanthropist Younger than typical Legacy fundholders Julia Ratti and James Cavanaugh created their estate plan as part of “responsible family financial planning. Family considerations were top of mind to the couple, followed by a percentage bequest to the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation will administer their fund and make sure that grants are sent to their favorite local charities exactly as they have instructed. Julia is a respected community leader, present city councilmember of the City of Sparks and an advisor for the Girl Scouts USA. She demonstrates skillful leadership and does not shy away from advocating for the betterment of the community. James is the Executive Director for Western Industrial Nevada (WIN), a man who loves the Nevada outdoors and who primarily defines himself as a musician. He plans to play guitar and sing as long as he lives. Julia grew up in Sparks very near to where they now live just north of Downtown Sparks on G Street. The couple care deeply for their handsome rescue pit bull mix, Gus, and enjoy camping, hiking, community events, and working on vintage Airstream trailer projects. James and Julia take responsibility and show the love they have for their community in their everyday activities. Their Legacy bequest is a fulfilling way to continue to reach out and help while inspiring generous actions for generations to come. How do you feel about your Nevada community? Do you take your place alongside your neighbors and contribute to its welfare? Consider following the example set by James and Julia and create a bequest to the Community Foundation in your will or trust. It is the opportunity of a lifetime. 20

The power of endowment is time. We have no way of knowing what challenges our children and grandchildren will be faced with 50 years from now, but the Community Fund will always be relevant, important to our region and, most of all, available when needed.
Lead. People will follow your example. You have contributed much to build this community. So has the Community Foundation. As the Community Foundation’s work grows along with awareness of its impact, more people will give. Your gift to the Community Fund will be magnified and replicated by neighbors, friends and maybe even family as we use it for good.
Without your support an opportunity for positive change is lost. Your gift to the Community Fund is a gift from one generation to the next. Through leadership and philanthropy we can help create the community where our grandchildren will want to live. 24

Youth Network Initiative

Homeless Youth in Washoe County Schools Imagine being young and alone and living on the streets or surfing couch to couch in Reno. Perhaps you have aged out of foster care and have no family; perhaps you are a runaway and feel safer on the streets than home. Did you drop out of school and now can’t get a job? Maybe you are a victim of sex trafficking, a drug user or are overwhelmed by circumstances and don’t see a way out. This year by leading the Youth Network Initiative (You’N-I) the Community Foundation learned just how hard it is to be young and alone. Our lessons came through activities that involved many people throughout the community.
The HomeStretch In January the Community Foundation hosted a public screening of the powerful documentary, The HomeStretch, that followed three homeless teens in Chicago as they strived to change their lives.
28
This is Homelessness In March, Initiatives Director Nick Tscheekar participated with other activists for the homeless by living on the streets for 48 hours. #Thisishomelessness was covered by the news and opened up the community’s eyes to the suffering in our midsts. The 48th hour culminated with the opening of the Eddy House YOUth Resource center in downtown Reno. By June they were offering comfort services to 185 different young people per week. The Community Foundation is now working on a project that will connect mentoring programs with each other and with new mentors.
Homelessness is a growing problem. 3,409 school children were homeless in 2013. This number grew to 3,550 in 2014. 29
‘‘
Youth homelessness is not an unsolvable
problem. We can offer alternatives to a drug-ruled life on the streets. Rather than paying to punish young people existing on the margins of our community, we can provide work force education, treatment and preventative social support services. These options are more cost-effective than jail. It costs Washoe County approximately

For six weeks October 1 – November 15, 2015 The Community Foundation is leading a fundraiser called Streetsmart 4 Youth. Restaurants throughout Reno will ask diners if they would care to donate $1.00 per check to help the charities that work with homeless youth. One hundred percent of proceeds will go to the following organizations:
Children’s Cabinet Sierra Association of Foster Families RISE The Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality Planned Parenthood Eddy House YOUth Resource Center As we look back over the year, real accomplishments and deep connections HUNGRY, TIRED, LOST stand out. Are You,
YOUNG and or
ALONE?
One of them is RenoYouthNetwork.com (RYN), an online searchable database to help people find available services for youth ages 12-24 in Washoe County. Your FREE online go-to guide! It is publicized to high school and middle school students as well as local service providers, and on posters that can be seen by homeless youth throughout town. RenoYouthNetwork.com

We are Bound Together All corners of the planet are connected by goodwill and support when fundholders recommend grants to nonprofits like Zawadisha; Conservation Foundation Trust Arusha, Tanzania; Heifer International; and Hela Bima World. National nonprofit organizations and alma maters such as Stanford University, the Air Force Association, American Civil Liberties Union, and Smithsonian Natural History Museum received grants from Community Foundation donor advised funds. In our neighborhood or in the far corners of the state, Nevada’s charities large and small are the Community Foundation of Western Nevada partners, receiving grants, working with us on projects and initiatives and serving our communities.

John R. Stockman Scholarship
The Serendipity Scholarship came about because of a chance meeting in an airport bar between a committed teacher and a generous anonymous donor. The real impact of this gift is that the culture of the school is changing. The student body, which had limited the vision for their lives, now sees their potential mirrored in the kids who made it. Optimism is growing.
