BE MORE Kurt A. Mische, President & CEO

Happy 2014! At the start of this New Year, many of us will take the opportunity to re-evaluate our estate plans to insure that our wishes are reflected in our wills and living trusts. For example, events like weddings and births may prompt changes in our plans; so may changes in tax laws, acquisition or sale of property or other assets. Moving from one state to another may trigger changes. Certainly a death or divorce may cause us to rethink and restructure our plans. Each year, KNPB is honored by many people who choose to make a bequest to the station in their estate plans. These dedicated viewers understand the importance of providing the high quality commercial free public television they enjoy for the next generation. The following language may be helpful to your attorney should you decide to give to KNPB in this way: “I give and bequeath to KNPB Channel 5 Inc. Reno, Nevada the sum of $(specific amount.) This bequest is unrestricted and the station management or other governing body may use and expend the same for the benefit of KNPB-TV in any manner it deems appropriate.” You may also leave a percentage of your estate or a percentage of your estate after the payment of debts. You may designate that your bequest be used to fund a specific program like NOVA, Nature, Masterpiece, PBS Newshour or a specific genre of program, like news, music, or children’s programs. There are some other options available to you as well, depending on your situation. These options may help you leave a bequest to KNPB and reduce your estate taxes at the same time. Since all of our situations are different, you should consult with an estate planning attorney for the proper legal advice. So as the New Year begins, remember to take some time to make sure your will and trust reflect your current situation and desires. We offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to those who have made room in their hearts and their estate plans for KNPB.

“When I look at our stations around the country, there are a handful of stations that are truly extraordinary—I would say almost legendary. And KNPB happens to be one of those.” – Paula Kerger, President & CEO of PBS 12 January 2014
