BE MORE Kurt A. Mische, President & CEO

Paying Dues At KNPB you will hear us speak often about the importance of giving to support the work we do in and for our community. During a recent presentation to a local civic club, some in the audience were surprised to hear my explanation of all the costs we face in order to bring your favorite programs to you. As we launch our March on-air membership drive, let me share that explanation with you as well. Unlike the commercial networks, PBS is a non-profit membership organization — meaning that member stations like KNPB must pay dues in order to belong. Paying these dues means we can broadcast great programs like Downton Abbey, Antiques Roadshow, PBS NewsHour, Sesame Street and all the rest. Each PBS station’s annual dues are calculated using a formula that includes market size, viewership, the amount of money stations raise on their own, activities in the community, and a host of other factors. Based on this formula, KNPB’s dues to PBS are $655,000 this fiscal year — an increase of 15% from two years ago. But these dues do not pay for all of our viewers’ favorites. For example, the British comedies cost an additional $15,000. Those fees are paid to the BBC. Lawrence Welk costs another $6,600. We also must pay extra for the rights to broadcast KNPB-Create and KNPB V’Me on our digital channels. That puts our annual programming costs over $682,000 this year! In addition to these expenses, KNPB has the same costs that any other business has…utilities, salaries, benefits, supplies, insurance, building maintenance, and of course, equipment. With our system of 33 translators and transmitters that send our signal over a 75,000 square mile area in central and northern Nevada and northeastern California, we run up quite an electric and maintenance bill. Here’s the good news! This year, KNPB will raise 80% of its 3.9 million dollar budget from local donors, foundations, companies, estate gifts, vehicle donations and production work. Only 20% of our funding comes from governmental sources. We then re-invest 85 cents out of every dollar raised to buy, produce, and broadcast your favorite programs and provide important services to our area. KNPB practices responsible stewardship of the dollars you invest in us. So you see why activities like our March membership campaign are so important! Thank you for all you do to support your public television station. And thank you for your patience while we do some on-air fundraising to encourage others to do the same!

“When I look at our stations around the country, there are a handful of stations that are truly extraordinary—I would say almost legendary. And KNPB happens to be one of those.” – Paula Kerger, President & CEO of PBS 12 March 2014
