FLAMENCO TRADITIONS FROM SPAIN
Raíz de 4 honors the art of Flamenco by delving into its most primitive roots, evoking the convergence of cultures and the folklore of Spain. The work expresses the purest styles of Flamenco, some of which are romances, martinetes, fandangos and soleares, conveyed through inspired and moving performances by a cast of distinguished dance and musical artists. Song (cante), dance (baile), guitar (guitarra), and percussion (percusión) seamlessly transmit a genuine love for this art form and take the audience on an intensely authentic and

CONTEMPORARY THEATER FROM MEXICO CITY
This Mexico City based theatre ensemble has created a suite of works that explore contemporary ideas of democracy in the 21st Century, and blends them with narrative collages from Mexican history and contemporary life. The solo work, Tijuana, is the staged result of an anthropological theatre experiment undertaken by Lagartijas ensemble member Gabino Rodríguez, in which he abandoned his life in Mexico City to work on an assembly line in a Tijuana factory on the U.S. border. Passing under a false identity for six months, he earned the legal minimum wage to explore how the current day Mexican working class survives. The performance

CONTEMPORARY DANCE FROM NEW YORK CITY
Created and choreographed by Yin Mei, an artist of the Chinese diaspora who has been part of the New York dance scene since the 1990s, this new dance theater piece for five dancers melds themes from the iconic Chinese literary work, The Peony Pavilion, and Yin Mei’s own life experience as a teenage government dancer during the Chinese Revolution. Highly visual and referencing a dense collection of letters she wrote to her family over two decades, the work is a dance painting that occupies the space between truth and dreams. A special book discussion of The Peony Pavilion by Tang Xianzu will be held JAN 10, 10:30 AM as part of the Literati Book Club at The Ringling Art Library.

This remarkable theatre work intersects addiction, religion and the law in a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. As a timely exploration of the American criminal justice system, this multidimensional play blurs the line between hip-hop and dramatic performance. Dahlak Brathwaite (writer/performer) weaves through the autobiographical and the fictional, music and monologue, to examine his place in what appears to be a cultural rite of passage as a young, black male. In this work, Brathwaite maximizes his abilities as musician, actor, poet, and educator within the transformational space of the theatre. Since launching into the national spoken word scene by winning the Brave New Voices international poetry slam (as now seen on HBO), Dahlak has been featured on radio and television, and continues to appear live on national stages. While in Sarasota, Brathwaite will be leading a workshop with Second Chance Last Opportunity. Companhia Urbana de Dança is here to teach us a little about the international soul of hip-hop, and brings the dancers' individual identities, testimonials, and attitudes to the stage with an upbeat, Afro-Brazilian accent. Firmly positioned in the leading urban dance scene in Brazil, choreographer Sonia Destri Lie’s boldly original mix of contemporary Brazilian dance and hip-hop infuses both forms with new rigor: meditative one moment, explosive the next. Located in the true heart of street dance, Destri strips it of its easy tricks, finding its original emotional depth, expressive range, and poetic integrity with a Brazilian sensibility. FLAMENCO INNOVATIONS FROM SPAIN
Eduardo Guerrero is a master performer and director at the vanguard of new flamenco. Sought after for his progressive style and technical precision, his work is as incendiary as it is exacting. Desplante is a modest homage to mining songs from the eastern coast of Spain, developed in the mining mountain region of Cartagena-La Unión. Rooted in an important art and musical lineage of mostly Andalusian miners, the minera form traditionally transmitted the historical plight of working in the mines. Guerrero has worked with Flamenco luminaries such as Eva la Yerbabuena and Rocio Molina, and his contemporary aesthetics, refined technique, and profound knowledge of the Flamenco essence places him among the greatest names on the international dance scene.

ANIMATION/SHADOW PUPPETRY FROM SO-CAL
Creations by Miwa Matreyek are multimedia live performance works combining projected animation and the artist’s own shadow silhouette, as she interacts with the fantastical world of the video, merging film and theater to create a unique kind of spectacle. This World Made Itself is a visually and musically rich journey through the history of the earth, from the universe’s epic beginnings to the complex world of humanity. The piece is at once semi-scientific (like flipping through a children’s encyclopedia), and emotional, surreal, and dream-like. Her newest work, Infinitely Yours, tries to visualize and physicalize all of the bad news about climate change tumbling into our news feeds. The shadows and animation lead viewers through a web of connections between humans and climate change, from plastics in the oceans to toxins in our food and air, extinctions, the breakdown of natural systems (rising sea levels, massive storms, wildfires), to climate migration and conflict. While in Sarasota, the masterful Matreyek will conduct a workshop with local design and film students.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM | SPOTLIGHT FLORIDA! We know that artists need space and time to work, and that institutional support for creative endeavors is an investment in the performance of tomorrow. As an incubator of new creative projects by living artists of all disciplines, the Art of Performance hosts artist residencies, in which choreographers, composers, circus artists, theatre makers and other practitioners can test ideas, and experiment with new artistic language. As a public museum committed to access, inspiration and innovative ideas, we make limited space and time available to individual artists and projects through a growing creative residency program. Spotlight Florida! is an initiative that honors performance makers creating and residing in Florida. Each season, The Ringling will support or present a project by a Florida performing artist. This support may take the form of studio time, public presenting of finished work or a full commission of a new performance piece. Artist in residence activities and on site workshops with visiting artists take place in The Ringling’s Perret Performance Studio in the Kotler-Coville Glass Pavilion.
