HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT… THE RINGLING'S 2022/23 PERFORMANCE SEASON IS HERE! Indulge in the brilliant, lush, and hilarious season of performances at The Ringling’s one and only Historic Asolo Theater (HAT). The HAT is a hidden temple within The Ringling’s walls and we want everyone to experience the rarified elegance and enduring vitality of this unique Italian opera house. As a tip of the hat to the theater’s important role in the local performing arts ecology, this season is dedicated to reintroducing our historic venue to Sarasota as the HAT. A HAT—especially the top hat—is theatrical, symbolic, and of the circus. Just like The Ringling. Hats are a container for stage magic, were an accessory conspicuously worn to the theater, and are prominent as societal style markers, work attire, or blessed sun shade. A HAT is costume, seasonal, and celebratory. It can be wild or elegant, casual or funky, and beautiful or ridiculously formal. We welcome all styles, so put on your flair and finery, and come see what’s on at the HAT! LEFT: Frederick Whitman Glasier (American, 1866 – 1950), Portrait of Charmion, Strong Lady. HATS OFF RELATED PROGRAMMING HATS OFF engages performance lovers of all interests with visiting artists in off-stage forums. These programs allow participants to deepen their understanding of the performance work they see on stage by hearing directly from the artists themselves, and also give visiting artists insight into the Sarasota-Manatee community through less formal conversations. Join the fun! ARTIST TALKS AND WORKSHOPS Less formal than a lecture presentation, Artist Talks are programs where artists and guests can share topics of special interest. Workshops allow artists of all disciplines to share hands on learning and provide practice Photos by Cliff McDonald
sessions for participants. MASTERCLASSES IN MOVEMENT Masterclasses give participants the opportunity to work with guest artists to improve knowledge and technique of dance or movement composition. Look for a diverse range of dance masterclasses, including salsa, contemporary, ballet, and other styles.

ARTIST RESIDENCIES Artist residencies are often less visible, but no less important HAT projects in which choreographers, composers, circus artists, theater makers, and other practitioners can gestate ideas, experiment with new artistic language, and invest in the performance of tomorrow. Artist residencies reinforce the essentials for artistic creation: time, space, and resources to experiment and iterate while prototyping works for public presentations and touring. We offer public programs and conversations with resident artists which illuminate and delight. HAT 2022-2023 ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
Rosie Herrera of Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre (Miami, FL) Leah Verier-Dunn of Moving Ethos (Sarasota, FL) John Heginbotham of Dance Heginbotham (New York, NY) Moira Finucane (Melbourne, Australia)
Join us this season at the HAT’s pre- and post- show hang out in the Benfer Courtyard. Grab a drink, chat with friends, and discuss the performances in a casual, outdoor neighborhood space. See you @ the HAT Lounge!

THE RINGLING’S ART OF PERFORMANCE delivers broad access to provocative and timely performing arts that reflect a wide range of experiences, disciplines, and relevant cultural expressions. The series embodies The Ringling’s values of inclusion, inspiration, and excellence through programs that elevate community engagement, equitable partnerships, and the plural exchange of ideas in tandem with visiting artists. Besides public programs, we support Florida-based, national, and international performance makers in developmental residencies and creative research. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is the State Art Museum of Florida administered by Florida State University. It features an art museum, historic mansion, circus museum, historic theater, conservation laboratory, arboretum, and research library, situated on 66-acres of bayfront property in Sarasota. THE RINGLING’S EQUITY STATEMENT The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art inspires, educates, and entertains through arts and culture, and is a place that encourages creative ideas, innovative thinking, open dialogue, and meaningful exchange. When all people are included and see themselves reflected in our mission, we can transform our communities, our institutions, and our world into better places for everyone. Societal inequities have shaped our field in ways that continue to impact it today, as evidenced by the limited engagement and representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), Latinx and Hispanic people, and other marginalized groups. The Ringling believes that inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) are essential to its mission and vision. In our role as a cultural, educational, and civic leader, we have a moral obligation for our institution to include the diverse perspectives and narratives of people from the local to the global communities. In looking to the future, we need to acknowledge our past as an institution where BIPOC and Latinx and Hispanic people were historically excluded. To this end, we believe that a focus on race equity is critical and serves as a starting point from which to address other forms of inequity. We understand that IDEA work is difficult, but we commit to keep learning, evolving, and improving on our journey to become an anti-racist institution. LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Florida State University acknowledges that its Florida campuses are located on the ancestral and traditional homelands of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the Apalachee, Seminole and Muscogee Nations, the ancient Calusa, Uzita and Tocobaga, and others. We pay respect to the resiliency of their tribal members, past and present, and to all Indigenous peoples. The University honors its unique and collaborative friendship with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, together paying tribute to the Tribe’s great history and rich culture. We encourage all to learn about the significance of Indigenous peoples in this region and throughout the nation. With a collective knowledge of the past, we are inspired to teach, live, and support a future that empowers all individuals.
