School Programming 2018-2019 at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery
Taking on BIG ideas through art! Students develop opinions and share their personal responses through a selection of artworks and themes. Our students are always doing, talking, moving and making more than they are asked to sit and listen. Our NEW 2018-19 Workshops: • Are truly cross-curricular using our 21st Century Learning approach • Are differentiated in content for your grade • Are dynamic, interactive, connected and loved!
“What was most valuable was that they can express their “truth”, ideas, and opinions through critically examining and creating art, we loved this, thank you!”
21st Century Learning! Our programing is developed and delivered around our philosophy: Our 21st Century Learning model through the arts; the 4 C’s Creativity Collaboration Critical Thinking Communication and our 5th C…Curiosity The arts teach: • that problems can have more than one solution • there are many ways to see and interpret the world • complex forms of problem solving; situations are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity • that the limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition. • depth over breadth & the ability to leap across disciplines

Kinship: Indigenous ways of knowing (Grades 1-2 & 3-5) October-December, 2018 Half day: Grades 1-2 | Full day: Grades 3-5* Includes studio
Through the worldview of Indigenous peoples, we take an interpersonal approach to understanding and relating to the world around us. The artworks search for the human relationships with natural elements, broadening students’ perception of influences in their lives. Students will use movement, sound, poetry and some mindful exercises. Grades 3-5: We take a deeper look at collective identity; how we benefit from an enhanced understanding of cultures, which are strongly influenced by stories & language. *In the studio: We draw inspiration from the unification of Starlings to make a layered response using an involved selection of mixed media to create a visually stunning artwork that represents an appreciation of the natural world. Curriculum connections: Fine Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies, History, Drama, Music
Media Frenzy (Grades 6-8)
October-December, 2018 | Full day only Includes studio Remember Ebola, SARS and the movie Outbreak? The artists use tech & textiles to video and sculpture in our exhibition Public Notice to probe the media panic that follows such health scares. Today any outbreaks are non-stop news, students will explore how fear can trump empathy and understanding and think critically about information they consume and create. Students will distinguish fact from opinion, recognising how media can sometimes be used to give fear the last word. In the studio: We use ink, painting, fabric & textile techniques to create an individualised banner representing growing media distortion, and how our views can become fabricated by media frenzies around events. Curriculum connections: Fine Arts: elements and principles of design; Language Arts; Drama, Digital Literacy

In the studio: We feel our way through pastel and watercolour techniques to complete an artwork that will express different emotions, which are personal and unique. Curriculum connections: Fine Arts: elements and principles of design; Language Arts; Social Studies; Drama, Music

This workshop takes some risks and opens the door to discussion and interactives around, sadness & grief, hope, loyalty, tech rage and mindful stress reduction. Inspired by our artworks, students will build emotional intelligence through individual and collaborative activities including visual literacy, game-play and drama. In the studio: Students will create a triptych that expresses how emotions are open to interpretation and can have a positive or negative outcome. Using printmaking and drawing techniques, as well as literacy, students will work responsively to music.
