Embracing Placelessness This season we are pleased to present contemporary artists who address issues of identity and place by creating narratives using photography, sculpture, drawing, and installation. In each exhibition, there is a unique sense of placelessness that begs the question—how do we confront our identities in this state of flux? In Familiarity in the Foreign, artist Lindsay Lauckner Gundlock uses photography taken while traveling to explore the idea of finding a new “hometown” in a different country. Her images are quiet and reflective, showing a personal connection to her journey. jerm IX uses photography to document his exploration of the now vacant building that was once home to the supermarket chain Knob Hill Farms. As both an urban explorer and street/graffiti artist, jerm ix confronts issues of personal memory and abandonment as he reconciles place and identity.
experiences and perceptions of Eastern and Western customs. Addressing difficult narratives through imagination, vibrant colours and floral motifs, this exhibition unifies Dhaliwal’s past to create a unique sense of place, straddling two identities. Employing immersive multimedia installations, Lucie Chan and Jérôme Havre explore the transient nature of human connections and communities. The works amplify personal relationships and situations of social transformation. The artists challenge the way we perceive identity and ask us to reflect on the politics of location.
Sarindar Dhaliwal’s installations are rooted in memories and dreams, often addressing her childhood jerm IX, Knob Hill Farms (detail), 2011, digital print Page 4 | Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016
Curator’s Choice The six-foot long table is scratched and dented, cup rings scattered around its top, as well as blobs of ink in the open drawer. An exquisite array of coloured books are placed on this well-worn table. The books are bound with green leather plates with gold lettering. The narrative runs like the words on a page, from left to right requiring not just a shift of the viewer’s eye, but of her body, as well, in order to

read the sentence that starts with “Once upon a time” and ends with “this work represents a resolution of sorts; a coming home to the place where all the narratives she has written began.” the green fairy storybook is about Sarindar Dhaliwal’s desire to read and her love of colour. It is also about relationships, the immigrant experience and the development of an artist. - Linda Jansma, Senior Curator Read the full article on our blog!
Volunteer Profile Armand Ali is a Grade 12 Co-Op student from Ajax High School who has been working with our curatorial team this winter. We were looking for a new work from our collection to hang in our elevator lobby space, and asked Armand to select one from the vault. He chose Arnaud Maggs’ Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours, 2005, due to his interest in colour theory and patterns. Read more about Armand on our blog! Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016 | Page 5
Lindsay Lauckner Gundlock, Coin Operated Binoculars (detail), 2015, Digital C-Print, 2015
Lindsay Lauckner Gundlock: Familiarity in the Foreign April 30 - June 5 Opening at RMG Fridays: May 6, 7-10pm “ Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground.” - Judith Thurman This ongoing series was shaped during the continuing travels of Lindsay Lauckner Gundlock. The photographs were taken during cross-continental road trips in a family-filled car, to explorations of a new “hometown” in a different country. The images represent the quiet moments that she found among the chaos of travel, as well as the pieces of a place that she grasped onto, and that in return, etched themselves onto her.
Page 6 | Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016
Gundlock earned a BFA in Visual Arts from York University and has been a recipient of both Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council grants. Her previous work centred around the idea of home and tales of the occupants that lived within the walls. - Curated by Linda Jansma Gundlock was the CIBC Wood Gundy Emerging Artist winner of RMG Exposed 2015. Her photograph Coin Operated Binoculars will be displayed in the CORE21 window space in downtown Oshawa until August.
jerm IX, Knob Hill Farms (detail), 2011, digital print
jerm IX: The Singing Alarm June 1 - August 21 Tour at RMG Fridays: August 5, 7-10pm Peterborough-based artist jerm IX , describes himself as a street artist, lyricist, poet, photographer and urban explorer. The photographs featured in this exhibition were originally posted on his blog series entitled Abandonment Issues— where he documents his urban explorations through photography and poetry. As both an urban explorer and street/graffiti artist, jerm IX treads carefully in the middle. These two identities are not compatible or related, as urban explorers are not interested in tagging their locations. jerm IX explores the vacant building that was once home to the supermarket chain Knob Hill Farms, which operated at the Front Street and First Avenue Oshawa location from 1983-2001. The original
sections of the building date back to 1872, when it was the Ontario Malleable Iron Company, an iron foundry that was in operation until 1977. Not only does jerm IX explore the modern additions built for Knob Hill, but the interior of the original iron foundry. The exhibition begins with a selection of Thomas Bouckley Collection images to give historical context to jerm IX’s photographs, but the focus is on a rare glimpse of the interior of this large, vacant, structure. jerm IX ’s romantic interaction and the resulting photographs are an homage to the history this building holds for the community. - Curated by Sonya Jones Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016 | Page 7

Lucie Chan and Jérôme Havre: Liminal May 21 - September 11 Opening and Curator’s Talk: May 29 from 1-3pm Contemporary artists Lucie Chan and Jérôme Havre employ immersive multi-media installations to explore the transient nature of human connections, communities and territories in an era of cosmopolitanism. Both artists address liminality and space (both psychological and physical) through visual and spatial play bringing to light relationships between people and environments, particularly within situations of social transformation. The liminal, which is defined as a space of the “in-between” defies categorization and allows for the exploration of states of being between past and future identities and further into notions of transculturalism and cultural fluidity. Page 8 | Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016
Tour at RMG Fridays: June 3, 7-10pm Lucie Chan assembles multifigure ink, watercolour and pencil drawings with digital prints and animated video to create composite structures that suggest suspended states of being. Jérôme Havre’s scenographic environments include sculpture, photographic imagery and wall paintings to explore speculative ways of engaging with diverse audiences and reflect on perceptions of “otherness”. The artists’ works in Liminal propose an investigation of the changing notions of selfhood and challenge the way our identities are forged through alterations related to mind/body, conscious/unconscious and location/displacement. - Curated by Pamela Edmonds

Sarindar Dhaliwal: The Radcliffe Line and Other Geographies May 28 - August 21 Opening and Artist’s Talk: May 29 from 1-3pm Toronto-based artist Sarindar Dhaliwal was born in the Punjab, India, and raised in London, UK, before moving to Canada in 1968. Working in a range of media that includes installation, video, photography, and drawing, she weaves compelling narratives that explore issues of culture, migration, and identity. Rooted in memories and dreams, Dhaliwal’s work reflects on the dissonance of the immigrant experience, often addressing her childhood experience and perceptions of Eastern and Western customs. Drawing out the themes of personal identity and familial relationships that appear throughout her practice, this exhibition brings together monumental works from Dhaliwal’s oeuvre of the last twenty years, contextualizing her recent interdisciplinary body of work
Tour at RMG Fridays: July 8, 7-10pm exploring the history and ongoing consequences of the 1947 partition of India. Addressing difficult personal and collective narratives in lush, visually-stunning works that employ vibrant colours and floral motifs, Dhaliwal’s thought-provoking work responds to colonial histories with a critical approach that maintains reverence for wonder and imagination so that, as the artist describes, she may return beauty to the world. - Curated by Marcie Bronson Organized and circulated by Rodman Hall Art Centre/Brock University in collaboration with The Robert McLaughlin Gallery and The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford

York Wilson (Canadian, 1907 - 1984), Don Quixote (detail), 1972, collage on canvas. Gift of Denis DesOrmeaux, 1992
York Wilson: A Legacy June 11 - September 25 In 2014, the RMG was given the rare opportunity of choosing paintings for its permanent collection from a large body of work by the estate of abstract painter, York Wilson. Works by Wilson had been collected by the RMG from as early as the first gift of Monument by Alexandra Luke in 1967, and includes paintings, collages, prints and drawings. The offer was an occasion to “fill in the gaps.” We now have a collection of fifteen works by Wilson that range in date from 1955 to 1980. This exhibition is a celebration of those works and York Wilson as an artist in the foreground of the development of abstraction in Canada in the 20th century. Communications theorist Marshall McLuhan wrote of Wilson: “York Page 10 | Modern + Beyond Issue 18 | Summer 2016
Wilson is a key figure in relating us to both the old visual world of realism and to the new resonating world of touch and echo and pattern.” The selection of work from the RMG collection ranges from early forays into abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and experiments with pattern and collage. The unifying strength of Wilson’s oeuvre is his superb facility with both design and colour and an inherent energy throughout his practice. While Wilson’s contribution is less-well known today, this exhibition is confirmation of the importance of his work to Canadian art history. - Curated by Linda Jansma
