Editor’s Note Welcome to the second edition of AB10 - 7, the magazine of Garthdee Community Council! The first edition, supported by Robert Gordon’s University, has been very well received and we have had lots of positive feedback. This second edition has been very kindly sponsored by Vodafone. In this edition, we have articles from a few other groups as well as those in the first edition. Particularly pleased to have an article from the Girl’s Brigade, a very valuable group providing worthwhile activities for young people in our community. If you have any girls interested in joining, I am sure they would be made most welcome. We would love to hear from any other groups in the community that would like to let people know what they do, raise awareness of their group and maybe encourage some more people to come along and join them! At the Community Council meetings (open to all members of the public) we are given statistical information from the Police about issues in the area. One item that stands out and causes concerns for everyone is house break ins/burglary. The reassuring information from the Police is that, although one break in is one too many, instances in Garthdee are relatively low. One of the main points that they raise is that very few criminals bother with breaking in (damaging doors/windows). It takes them too long and the noise can attract attention. Criminals do not bother as there are so many properties where the householder does not lock their doors when they are home. A lot of break ins are where the criminal simply opens the door and grabs what they can that has been left lying around. Many people leave their house or car keys, bags, purses containing contactless cards and cash laying around just inside the door. Some simple steps would make it far more difficult for criminals: Lock your door, even when you are at home. Ensure remote opening/keyless keys and contactless cards are away from the front door to prevent card scammers. I hope when Christmas comes, you can all have a happy, peaceful holiday and hopefully we will be back in the new year!

NIGG COMMUNITY POLICING TEAM Over the last few months, particularly during the school holidays, there was a slight increase in calls regarding antisocial behaviour within the Garthdee area. These calls often related to youths under the influence of alcohol, being abusive to members of the public and causing damage. In a bid to tackle such behaviour, local Officers have been involved in targeted activity, working alongside volunteer Special Constables to increase the availability and visibility of Police in these areas at times the public tell us there are problems. This activity will continue throughout the coming months. As a Policing Team, we are fully aware of how important it is to engage positively with the local youths to not only

deter antisocial and criminal activity, but also to build trust and confidence in our Policing approach. In a bid to support this, two members of the local Community Policing Team, Constables Paul McEwen and Aimee Thom, have started working alongside the staff and pupils at Kaimhill Primary School. The Officers visit frequently, working closely with staff to provide safety advice to pupils, helping them to understand what the Police do, how they can help them and ensure they can feel safe whilst out in their local area. We look forward to building upon this relationship. As we head toward the end of the year and the nights get longer and darker, it is increasingly important to protect your property and make it a less attractive target for criminals. In order to prevent falling victim to a ‘sneak in’ theft from an insecure house, garage, shed or vehicle there is one solution and that is to ensure the windows and doors are locked. That advice although simple, costs nothing and is the most effective way to reduce the opportunities for criminals to commit a crime against your property. Keep your home and belongings safe. Use timer switches on lights and radios to make your home look occupied. Ensure all doors and windows are secure when you leave or go to bed. If possible, use security lighting at the front and rear of your premises and use a good quality lock on any garden sheds or outhouses. Any residents who wish to receive more detailed crime reduction advice the local Policing team would be delighted to help.

GARTHDEE COMMUNITY COUNCIL Welcome to the winter edition of the Community Council news brochure, the AB10 7, and since the summer edition we have been extremely busy representing the community, addressing numerous issues that impact our wider community, supporting individuals who live here to ensure their concerns were raised and their problems resolved. It’s been a period where the importance and existence of the Community Council has been evident and highlighted, we have played a pivotal role in ensuring our communities wishes and views have not been ignored amongst the decision makers of the city.

BUS STOP ON GARTHDEE ROAD. SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME! For several years Garthdee Community Council has argued strongly that the bus stop that was moved into RGU from Garthdee Road must be reinstated, or at very least a compromise position should be found that satisfied both the needs of the students and above all the residents who found it difficult to get off the bus within RGU. There were particular problems faced by the elderly, those with disabilities, the most vulnerable and young people, and Garthdee Community Council maintained the pressure on all concerned to enter negotiations and urged all parties to find a solution to the problem.

Winter 2019

Issue 2 We are delighted to report that an agreement has been reached with the City Council, First Bus, RGU, and the Community Council, with the support of all three local Councillors, that sees an additional stop being positioned to the left as you exit RGU. We know this will have a tremendous impact on the residents who rely upon having this stop in place, and we thank RGU for their financial contribution that ensures this piece of work has now been carried out.

SUCCESS for Garthdee Community Council, and a small piece of justice for local residents! INVESTMENT IN LOCAL FACILITIES. Over the last few decades, every resident of Garthdee has been witness to the constant asset stripping or land sales which have taken place and with very little re-investment coming back to our community. Garthdee Community Council strongly opposes any further developments that doesn’t see significant investment back into our community. In particular, we give our full support to the proposal to invest the lions share of the capital receipts gained from the building on, or sale of, the former bowling site, into an extension at Inchgarth Community Centre for people of all ages to enjoy for generations to come.

FORMER BOWLING CLUB PAVILION BEING KNOCKED DOWN. At the point of writing this article and following a recent fire at the site, the City Council had agreed to knock down the old bowling club pavilion for safety reasons, something which was promised for late September. The Community Council has been liaising with local Councillors on this matter and we expect that by the time this brochure has gone to print, the pavilion will have been taken down and the site secured. Yet another sad episode for this once vibrant, successful, and much loved community asset.

GARTHDEE BEING REPRESENTED AT THE HSCP LEAD GROUP. The Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) exists to bring services from the NHS and the City Council together under one body, with a view to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our citizens is best addressed, while ensuring local organisations and citizens have an opportunity to shape policy and drive resources towards our communities. The chairman of Garthdee Community Council, Paul O’ Connor MBE, will be representing the Community Council and other local organisations on the lead locality group, to ensure Garthdee doesn’t lose out on vital resources, and that our needs are not ignored. Paul said “Historically, the locality group of the HSCP didn’t really meet the needs of our community, and it is for this reason that I stepped away. I just didn’t think that those in power were listening to our views or meeting our aspirations as a community”

GIGABIT ABERDEEN GAINS MOMENTUM A city known for innovation and ground-breaking technology, Aberdeen was a natural choice as the first location in Scotland to benefit from our ‘fibre-to-the-premises’ roll-out in strategic partnership with Vodafone. A private investment from CityFibre of at least £40m has paved the way for the fastest, most reliable full-fibre broadband to neighbourhoods across the south of the city, including Garthdee, Kaimhill, Ruthrieston, Riverside, Kincorth and Tory. A GAME-CHANGER FOR RESIDENTS Offering staggeringly fast upload and download speeds, full fibre is far more reliable than current connectivity options which use constrained copper cables for part of the journey, but full-fibre is about more than just raw speed. The installation of a full fibre network is key to unlocking a brighter future that will transform how we live, work and play. Better connectivity undoubtedly means you can stream all the entertainment you want across multiple devices, and also makes it easier to do things like integrate the latest smart home tech, monitor loved ones’ health remotely and work from home with ease. With an ever-increasing world of smart technology for the home available, full-fibre offers up to an incredible 100mbps of reliable speeds all day and all night – no matter how many of you are online! Work smarter, link your home and office easily, keep communications clear and enjoy uninterrupted video and audio with exceptional download and upload speeds for transferring large quantities of data. A TRANSFORMATIVE INVESTMENT According to a report by economic consultancy Regeneris, Aberdeen homeowners and the wider property market can also expect to reap huge rewards from the roll-out. Up to 3% could be added to the value of local homes, as access to better-connectivity ensures you can stream all the entertainment you want, across multiple devices, integrate the latest smart home tech, monitor loved ones’ health remotely, work from home with ease and much more. Crucially, CityFibre’s network roll-out itself is expected to drive £25m in direct economic growth, providing increased employment across all sectors.

The future is here. Winter 2019

KAIMHILL PRIMARY SCHOOL At Kaimhill we are proud to celebrate the range and diversity of languages spoken. The Kaimhill Young Interpreters Club was established this year to better support international pupils who join the school. A group of pupils, ranging in age and speaking different languages, began to receive training for a leadership role as an interpreter. Responsibilities will include things such as introducing new pupils to school routines in their home language and helping them to settle in the playground. One of their initial aims was to investigate how many languages are spoken across the school. The club shared the number of languages spoken to the whole school during the European Language Day celebration assembly. We suspected there would be quite a few but were surprised to discover that there are 20 different languages spoken by Kaimhill pupils. These include Arabic, Mandarin, Polish, Swedish and Urdu to name just a few. The group also sent home a survey to gather information about languages spoken by the children’s grandparents. An incredible response urged them to begin the process of creating a Language Tree display which will recognise and celebrate diversity in the Kaimhill School Community. Goals for the winter terms include the creation of a digital advent calendar which can be used across the school to teach pupils about these different languages and the unique cultures of each country.

Community Involvement This school year, we have been striving to find ways to lower the cost of the school day. A generous school clothing donation from Sainsbury’s helped to provide school uniform to those in need of it.

Winter 2019

Issue 2 We also have pre-loved uniform in a range of sizes available free of charge from the school office. Please pop into the office to pick some up. Alternatively, if you happen to have any uniform which you no longer require we would be extremely grateful to add this to our collection. Kaimhill pupils have a lot to look forward in the upcoming months. December is a month of singing and dancing as pupils from Nursery to P7 begin to rehearse for Christmas show performances. Keep an eye out on social media for confirmation of show details for each year level. In addition, Primary 7 pupils are organising a variety of fundraising activities to raise money for the annual residential trip to Cromdale in June 2020. Local support is very much appreciated and all are welcome so please take note of any special dates for the diary. You won’t want to miss out on the delicious treats served at the Burns Supper and the P7 Cafe!

GARTHDEE COMMUNITY COUNCIL (cont.) However Paul recently revisited the HSCP locality meetings and noted a change in direction and enthusiasm to really listen to our community and others in the city. He said “I was pleasantly surprised at the willingness and positive attitude at the recent HSCP meeting, where there was a commitment and genuine attempt to take on board the views of our community and its representatives. I will be representing Garthdee at these meetings and playing a key role in ensuring Garthdee’s needs are no longer ignored, and that our many service providers and partners knowledge, experiences, and skills are utilised to maximise the opportunities that now face us, so that where there are opportunities to gain resources, then Garthdee gets its fair share of the pie so that our local issues can be tackled in a more meaningful way.

A WARM INVITATION TO ATTEND OUR MEETINGS. Garthdee Community Council meetings are open to the public and are held the second Tuesday of every month, 7pm at Inchgarth Community Centre. There’s a public forum section of the meeting at the start where we invite members of the community to come to the meeting, raise any issues or concerns that they have, with the opportunity to ask questions of the community councillors, local Councillors, the Police, or to simply listen in to hear all that’s going on in Garthdee. It’s most interesting, and a genuine warm welcome is extended to all! We hope you join us.

PARKING ON PAVEMENTS. We are delighted that the Scottish Government has agreed to bring into law the banning of parking on the pavements. Our community has witnessed a small but significant minority of residents parking in this way, and with this soon to be punishable by a fine, we urge all residents to respect those with disabilities, the elderly, people with sight problems, or children whose safety is of paramount importance.

Kaimhill Out of School CluB The Out of School Club operates from the community hub of Kaimhill Primary School for school aged children during term time on a Monday to Friday basis from 3.00pm-5.55pm. Our aims are to provide affordable out of school care services for school aged children for parents/carers living, working and training in Aberdeen city and to develop a variety of interests for the children attending. The children make their club their own and enjoy Baking, Arts and Crafts, Outdoor games, Gym games, Messy play and much more. “We always keep our club tidy”, “We play games together”. “When we do arts and crafts we do displays – we are working on an Autumn display”. The children have a small snack to keep them going until teatime. There are firm favourites. However, they like to try out new things. “We try things first before we say we don’t like them”, “At snack we help with the dishes”. The club is a friendly place and gives the children an opportunity to chill out after school. “We never fight or argue – we take turns”. You can also join us in the school holidays for activities and outings.

If you are interested in a placement at our club, we can offer a two, three or five day placement. For an application form and current price list please contact alison@communitylinkchildcare.org.uk or telephone 07526167049

Enjoy a free film every month

and learn more about mental health Mental Health Movie Monthly (MHMM) is a free publicfacing initiative in Garthdee, which uses film as a platform to stimulate discussions around mental health. Monthly showings have run consistently since it was founded in 2016 by two Lecturers in Mental Health Nursing from Robert Gordon University (RGU), Dan Warrender and Scott Macpherson.

MHMM has grown to reach many people through its film screenings, presentations and workshops, both locally and internationally. Garthdee residents, or people from further afield, may attend simply to enjoy a film, to discuss mental health as it relates to the film or to increase their knowledge and understanding of mental health issues. “Film is an accessible medium which is embedded in our culture, and it provides the rich seeds of discussion,” said Dan. “Mental health is often inappropriately seen as a taboo subject, and we hope that through our film showings and resulting discussions, we make it okay to have these conversations.”

Scott adds: “Our grand aim is that by encouraging people to talk about mental health, in a once-removed way, we increase the likelihood that people will speak openly about their own mental health.” Screenings take place on RGU’s campus and are always free for the public to attend. Refreshments and a welcoming environment are provided throughout, along with a facilitated discussion around mental health. There is no ‘expert panel’. Instead, everyone who attends is considered an expert on their own experience and are given an equal platform should they choose to use it. Films of any genre, age rating and style are shown to cater to a range of interests. Past screenings have included Frozen, Rambo, Split, It’s a Wonderful Life and also Pinocchio. MHMM’s mission is “to provide free monthly film showings, allowing an inclusive safe space where people can discuss mental health and human experience as equals”. You can keep up-to-date with future showings through MHMM’s Facebook page: RGU Mental Health Movie Monthly.

The next free showing is ‘Elf’ (PG) on Monday 9 December The film will be shown from 5pm to 8.30pm in room N117 of the Sir Ian Wood Building on RGU’s Garthdee Campus. Children are very welcome to attend. There is free parking from 4pm, with First Bus Service numbers 1 and 2 stopping directly outside. 5pm Reception. Doors open with tea, coffee, juice and water available. 5.30pm Film starts. 6.30pm Intermission with sustenance provided.

WASTE & RECYCLING As the seasons change so does the style of the waste and recycling we collect. By the time you read this Holloween will be over but spare a thought for this; if we all, across the UK, cooked the pumpkin flesh we carve then everybody in the country would have a bowl of pumpkin soup or a slice of pumpkin pie. That’s millions of meals in the bin that we’ve paid for. Think about food waste too at Christmas. Here’s a few thoughts on how to save waste and money around seasonal meals; • Portion appropriately for meals to save a mountain of sprouts or an ocean of mash going to the bin. • Freeze leftovers for later if you can • Look online for recipes for your leftovers, saves eating the same meal twice We don’t have details for collections around Christmas and New Year now. They are still to be finalised. If your collection falls on either Christmas or New Year holiday dates there will be changes to your collection. We will put these out on the Council web-site, probably in the local papers too. As always the Household Waste Recycling Centres will be available for surplus waste. Boxes, paper and card, empty bottles (thinking party here) can all be taken there. They are happy to take the bulky polystyrene too, better there than filling your household bin.

Have a great Christmas and New Year. Your Waste and Recycling Teams!!

At the moment Girls’ Brigade Scotland has a publicity campaign going on, which is centred round a BEE, to let people see that “Girls’ Brigade is the place to Be” and each company have their own Bee. Our Bee here is called “Garth-Bee” and he is very much part of the company. Girls are encouraged to look after our Bee, with each in turn taking him home to look after. This give the girls the opportunity to learn how respect, care and be responsible for something. Everybody loves Garth-Bee. This session, with the Bee campaign as well as being invited to talk at assembly at Kaimhill School, we have managed to enrol 15 new members in the Explorer and Junior sections. The is very encouraging We are presently working on our badgework, which includes the Juniors preparing and participating in their own Olympic Games, learning about climate change and how we can all help, and many more activities and topics. We have an excellent Girls’ Brigade company here in Garthdee where the leaders work to ensure the girls have a very positive experience and also learn new skills. I was recently told by that Girls’ Brigade is not just an organisation to join, but it is a family, where you are loved, and where you receive healing. Our company is very much like that, we are one big family, where the leaders not only look out and support the girls, but also help and support each other, where the girls know we are always there to care and look after them and where we can help our girls and families when necessary. Many of our parents came to the company when they were young, and it is always a joy to see that they now encourage their children to come along.

We would love to see even more girls joining Girls’ Brigade. If you are interested please contact me on gbgarthdee@btinternet.com

Financial Redress for Survivors of Historical Child Abuse in Scotland Were you in care as a child before December 2004 and were you abused while in the care of the state in Scotland? A statutory redress scheme has been set by the Scottish Government and will be legalised by March 2021, which will allow every child abused while in care of the state in Scotland to apply for compensation for ‘harm done’. An Advance Payment has been set up for those who are 70 and over, or terminally ill and may not be alive when the above legislation is complete. If you think you are eligible, you can apply now. Phone the Advance Team on 0808 169 9740. They are specially trained to deal with all types of abuse and will help you through the process. They will send you a form which you can fill in, (with their support if needed) and the only evidence for the Advance Scheme now is that you can prove which institution or place you were in care. Future Pathways is another service separate from Government which you can register with. They can provide you with support services, help to recover records and provide psychological trauma support. 0808 164 2005 or Free phone 0800 83 85 87 If you don’t wish to go down any of these routes but wish to give a testament which will help the Scottish Government make recommendations to make things better for children in care in the future, contact the NCF National Confidential Forum. This forum is about understanding and acknowledging your experiences as a child in institutional care in Scotland. You will be treated with dignity and respect, offer specialist advice and guidance regarding your time in care and your identity will be kept confidential.
