THE STORY ACT ONE
R R
It’s the holiday season and the year is 1776. Families and friends are gathering in Philadelphia for the annual tree lighting party at the Olde City Tavern Inn. Abby and her little brother Richard join the rest of the Stockton family and guests of the Inn, along with Benjamin Franklin and his friend Johnny, a young cadet.
The Olde City Tavern is the center of business and society where anyone and everyone meet. Thomas Jefferson is writing about freedom, George Washington arrives just in time to partake in the feast, and there is lovely music and dancing in the hall. Ben presents Abby with the most magnificent gift, an enchanted Nutcracker.
r
Ben summons his newest invention, life-size dancing dolls, as entertainment for the guests. Suddenly, a group of carousing cadets join the party. Exhausted from dancing, they then disappear into the night. Ben sprinkles magic dust into the air, and Lady Liberty and her Stars and Starlets appear. The families and partygoers retire for the evening, leaving Abby where she has fallen asleep with her Nutcracker. The Dew Drop Fairy and her Dream Fairies appear and cast a spell on the Tavern and everyone in it.
Suddenly, Red Coat Mice emerge taking a keen interest in the sleeping Abby and her Nutcracker. The clock strikes 12 and Abby awakens, just as the mice are ready to kidnap her and her Nutcracker. Ben Franklin comes to her rescue and frightens away the mice with magical lightning. Ben consoles Abby as the magic continues: the Christmas tree grows, as do the Toy Soldiers led by a life-size Nutcracker who is revealed as Johnny, and leads the Toy Soldiers in a mighty battle against the Red Coat Mice.
When the red-caped, General Mouse Howe appears, things start to look grim, until Abby joins the battle to help and General Mouse Howe is defeated. Abby and Johnny are transported to the Land of Snow and greeted by the Snow Princess and her Prince. After a beautiful dance, Abby and Johnny continue on in a magic sleigh through swirling snow to the Land of Toys and Sweets.

R R ACT TWO
Upon arrival in the Land of Toys and Sweets, Abby and Johnny are greeted by Ben Franklin who opens the gates for them with a magical key. This reveals mountains of cake topped with whipped cream and candy, sweetly glazed flowers and butter cream frosting as far as the eye can see. The Dew Drop Fairy and Toy Angels glide to welcome the children. Dancers from around the world delightfully perform as they present the children with delicious sweets from their lands.
The vivacious Spanish Chocolate Turron, the quiet and powerful Prince and Princess of Persia, the charming Chinese Dragon Candy, the energetic English Toffee, the jumping Russian Pashkas, and the Waltz of the Fairies all join in the festivities.
The Candy Cavalier escorts the Sugar Plum Fairy to center stage and the captivating pair dance lighter than air, completing Abby and Johnny’s perfect evening. All join in a glorious Grande Finale to freedom. Abby and Johnny live happily ever after.

ROCK ACADEMICS FOR GRADES 7-12
Rock Academics is an in-house academic program for
grades seven through twelve, which attracts a dedicated, diverse community of exceptional young dancers. Rock Academics provides academic flexibility and dual preparation for student’s artistic careers and futures in higher education.
Our highly motivated students move forward at a pace suited to their individual abilities; students can earn middle school, high school, and college credits, critical to young artists who often spend their college years in professional companies. Individual auditions followed by tours may be scheduled by calling the Headmaster of Rock Academics, Nicole DiGironimo Ph.D. at 215-551-7010 ext. 1134
RockREACH is a multifaceted community outreach program
which makes dance more accessible to underserved urban youth in the greater Philadelphia region. Our three-part initiative enhances the lives of economically disadvantaged youths and offers them a safe space to explore, grow, and express themselves through creative outlets. Rock Alumna, Wan Ting Zhao, current San Francisco Ballet Company Member performing at a 2010 RockREACH Dynamics of Dance Assembly
RESIDENCIES Rock Reach has multiple residencies with schools throughout Philadelphia that offer high-quality, weekly instruction in a variety of dance forms. CITY DANCE SCHOLARSHIPS City Dance is a scholarship program that is open to students ages 6 to 11 years throughout the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area who, due to financial limitations, are unable to explore and develop their talent for ballet. DYNAMICS OF DANCE ASSEMBLY Participating schools with Rock Reach and its residencies are given an assembly during which The Rock School’s exceptionally talented international community of dancers demonstrate and perform for the school. This assembly allows The Rock School’s dancers to interact directly with the students in Philadelphia schools. For more information please email: rockreach@therockschool.org 44
