formats; we moved conferences, meetings, open houses to virtual formats; we even created policies to guide how we interact and what we expect from each other.

At the same time, we had to make significant adjustments to our spaces and how we used our facilities. We changed the configuration of our buildings; we changed the buildings we use; and we re-imagined the outdoor spaces on our campuses. To support the health of our faculty and staff, we made adjustments based on who could be on campus and who needed to work from home; and we constructed new team structures to ensure the safety of each single cohort within the structure of a whole school.

All of our planning and all of our preparation, while thoughtful and well managed, still could not ease the fear and anxiety that existed within our country and certainly within our community. The stress and uncertainty of the pandemic left families worried and concerned for their health and their economic wellbeing. Families made difficult decisions as they wrestled with the uncertainty of what another semester of online learning might look like for their child, and how long our nation might be sheltered in home quarantine. Like many businesses across the country, Roeper felt this intense economic uncertainty on the bottom line of our budget as families made the decision to withdraw for a year for a variety of home learning options. School retention rates dropped to below 80% as school tuition revenue and camp tuition revenue declined. The reality of being a tuition dependent school hit our financial model hard. Like many of our families who are savers, it is in these rough times when we are grateful for the sound planning from stronger economic times.

Thanks to strong leadership from our Board’s past and current Finance Committee, the School was prepared to weather the economic challenge through the use of our reserve funds and our approved application for a Small Business Administration PPP Loan from the federal government. The reserved funds were raised over a series of years during stronger economic times, and the PPP loan made it possible to maintain our staffing at a time when preserving jobs was essential to the program and most importantly to the care and wellbeing of our faculty and staff.

We began this school year confronting experiences that were unique to our most seasoned faculty members. The idea that school could simultaneously be in-person and virtual seemed like a concept inconsistent with the relationally based understanding of a Roeper education, and yet through the professionalism and creativity of our faculty we brought to life a plan that kept students safe and offered families choice during the pandemic.

Reflecting on this past year and the state of the school requires that we first take the time to reflect on the state of education. Yes, it is critical to remember what we did together to sustain our school during the pandemic, but we must also look at the full landscape and see that we are in an industry that is being reset. As Independent School Consultant, Ian Symmonds, reminded a group of School Heads this winter, “We’ve experienced 10 years of change to our industry in less than a year; no wonder we’re exhausted.” The use of technology, the reimagining of how we use time, and the critical focus on social and emotional wellbeing of children have landed with great force during the pandemic. Layered on top of all of this structural change is the understanding laid bare of the systemic inequality and lack of access to sound teaching and learning in our country. And so, the important question is, what have we learned during this time of deep challenge? What will we keep from our COVID school experiences? What must change, and what is going to stick?

We know that place-based teaching and learning isn’t going away, but neither is online learning.

Within The Roeper School, we have the opportunity to come out of this moment of exceptional challenge stronger than how we entered. Not necessarily bigger, or wealthier — though both would be great — but stronger. More aligned with our core values, more aware of the impact that this moment has had on our profession, more deeply committed to extending our philosophical tenets beyond the walls of our buildings.

During this year of amazing change, we adjusted our practices, policies and programs to respond to the health and safety needs of our community. We adjusted schedules, the frequency of our meetings, the amount of content we taught, our homeroom/ advisory program, how we group, how we mix; we added and suspended programs and activities; we moved programs and performances to virtual

We continue to support the needs of gifted learners, learn all we can about technology integration, provide our faculty with important professional development, and seek ways to engage the community in our philosophy.

As the 2020/21 school year began, and our teachers had the opportunity to implement the sound plan constructed by our COVID Task Forces, the School was able to demonstrate to the Roeper community and beyond the soundness of our safety protocols and our ability to deliver a Roeper education, five days a week, to all of our students. The design of our program gave families the opportunity to choose month by month whether to be in-person or to participate in our Roeper Home Learning Program (RHLP).

While public schools around us struggled to meet the in-person needs of their students, Roeper students were engaged in active learning on both campuses from the very beginning of the school year.

By mid-year we reached a significant turning point in our admissions cycle and added 31 new students to our program — a record number of new additions to start the second semester. Additionally, we had 103 families in February and 65 families in March join us for our new family open houses. The message to the community was clear, Roeper had a plan that was mission-aligned, in-person, and meeting the health and safety needs of families. Students were in school and able to enjoy learning.

The strength of the School’s responses to the pandemic has been our faculty and staff. As always, it is the people in our School that make the difference in each child’s experience. We continue to support the needs of gifted learners, learn all that we can about technology integration, provide our faculty with important professional development, and seek ways to engage the community in our philosophy. And still, it is the relationship between teacher and student that makes all the difference. Our commitment to health and wellness has only deepened as we understand with more clarity the social and emotional needs of our children and the mental health challenges they face during COVID. The humanistic spirit that George and Annemarie imparted to us lives with love and intensity in these most trying days.

One area that echoes the Roepers’ vision for the School is our strategic focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ). The School has long been a proponent of SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity), helping students, teachers,

parents, and now Board members better understand their essential work in becoming more culturally competent and aware of bias. In support of our DEIJ work the School has also developed a Multicultural Leadership Team to work across divisions on program, policy, and planning. We want to ensure that diversity work is everyone’s work not just the task of the Director of Diversity. We have also made great strides at the board level by establishing a standing board committee for DEIJ. The committee is charged with ensuring that the board has a DEIJ lens in all of its work at each committee and examines itself and the polices it creates for the School. One of the first acts of the DEIJ Committee is the development of an Anti-Racism Resolution that will be shared with the community in the coming months.

At the School level, we are engaging in an institution-wide DEIJ audit similar in depth to the accreditation work we do to assess our mission congruence and need for growth. We will begin with a self-study to establish a preliminary inventory of what we already do, and then establish a survey, focus groups, and sub-committees to help us address the need for policy, program, and practices. The audit will help us construct dashboards so that we have ongoing measurements of standing and progress. This is not a one-time effort, but rather a process that will continue year to year to help us nurture our commitment to social justice. We will be asking ourselves hard questions, but we do not see the process as a “gotcha” moment. Instead, we are committed to the learning and growing that comes from looking in the mirror and understanding where we need to do better. With the guidance of Alison Park from Blink Consulting, we will spend this year and next on this mission-aligned focus.

I know it can be easy for families to view a tuition- based independent school like Roeper as something in their lives that is transactional. The family writes a tuition check, the school provides a product. It is a consumer-driven model similar to some of the online classes or certificate programs we have become familiar with over the last few years. Except, schools like Roeper aren’t producing products — children are not products. Education is not a mechanical process churning out things.

Teaching and learning is organic; it is transformational. Roeper is not about consumerism and

consumption; it is about community-building, relationships, and trust-building. Our programs are about people and centered on raising good humans, not merely providing the certificate of completion to move on to the next step.

The pandemic has taught us about a new currency that our community sees with clarity and values with a fresh perspective. They see our strength in addressing the ever-changing needs within the pandemic and they know we are nimble in our responsiveness. Families know that we prioritize the safety of our children and the broader community, that the interdependent agreements we make with one another keep us all safe. Parents know that Roeper is their home; it is relational; and there is strength in the community we have formed. Our

flexibility and ability to adapt and evolve with the needs of society have kept our doors open and our program thriving while schools around us have struggled mightily.

Our families know that excellence at Roeper is not measured merely by grades, test scores, college admissions, and advanced level classes — although, in truth, Roeper is successful in each of these areas. No, our families know that excellence at Roeper is measured by the difference that each of our graduates makes. Alums who leave our doors with a philosophy that guides their life’s journey with compassion, empathy, and an embrace of social justice. When Roeperians hold fast to these teachings, how can the state of our school be anything but strong? F

FROM THE CHAIR

One of the core tenets of the Roeper Philosophy is “to prepare this future generation to deal with the unknown.” Nothing could have been more relevant to the work we did in 2020.

Last year was filled with unknowns facing us each and every day. In response, the Board took an unusual role in the day-to-day operations of the school. The Board’s work must always be focused on preserving the mission, philosophy, and core values of the school with an eye toward long-term strategy and development. It is the board’s job to help build the school for our children’s children. But in 2020, what is normally operational, became strategic, impacting the long-term health and success of the school.

In the spring of 2020, the Board led the group of planning task forces charged with developing Roeper’s plan for this extraordinary school year. We convened several groups: Steering, to lead and coordinate

the effort; Wellness, focusing on mental and physical health; Campus Operations; Teaching and Program; Personnel; Finance and Legal; and Communications. Each of these task forces included all constituencies of our community. Faculty, staff, administration, trustees, parents, and students were represented and fully participated in the planning process. The task forces developed plans for a variety of program delivery models from completely remote learning to various hybrid models to in-person-only learning.

The whole time, we were all focused on how to deliver a Roeper education in this unprecedented time.

We considered our mission, how we could care for the social and emotional needs of our students, and how to protect the physical safety of students, faculty, staff, and families. And this planning occurred in a landscape of unknowns. Every day we learned new information about the virus and grappled with new legal and medical requirements.

As we do at Roeper, we asked for the community’s engagement. We surveyed the community, held multiple town halls, and shared draft plans for feedback.

Ultimately, we created a plan that allowed our students to return to campus and our faculty to do what they do best – educate and inspire our kids to think as individuals and engage as a community. Our faculty re-worked how they teach, developing new teaching methods as the school year evolved and they learned from each other and the students what worked best. The dedication, commitment, and creativity of our faculty is unmatched — and this year we saw just how far they could go. Not only have the faculty inspired our children, they have inspired the entire community with their tireless efforts to support our students.

2020 was a year like no other. While I long for a return to “normal” and more time in the physical presence of family and friends, I am thankful for all we learned. Not just how to use Zoom or which face masks fit best, but the most important lesson. We learned that when pushed beyond our limits, this community comes together. We support and care for one another and give each other grace. We are, indeed, prepared for the unknown. F

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Roeper’s financial position continued to be strong during the 2019/2020 school year. Due to our strong finances, David Feldman, the faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees continued to devote resources toward enhancing Roeper’s near-term and long-term finances as outlined in our strategic plan. From a financial perspective, there are several key sub-elements of the strategic plan that are critical for Roeper’s long-term sustainability: Support and Attract Great Faculty and Staff — Roeper’s longevity is due to the strength of the faculty and administration. Retention of our talented teachers and staff is vital to Roeper’s long-term success. We are pleased to share that during the 2019/2020 school year, salaries were increased by approximately 3% and are at the benchmark salaries of other Midwestern independent schools.

Invest in best-in-class facilities — Over the past several years significant investment was made in the Birmingham campus to improve the learning environment. Phase II of the capital campaign continued during the year.

The full working kitchen was put into service at the beginning of the school year and has been met with a great response from all community members. The Development team continues to work to raise the funds to finish the learning resource space on the second floor.

Grow the endowment — Roeper’s endowment, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased 2.3% to just under $8 million as a result of donations and prudent investment management. By continuing to grow the endowment, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable.

Support the Mission through Increased Financial Aid — While financial strength is important to the long-term viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success. George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels. As a result of an improving financial position, Roeper was able to continue to provide more than $3 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community. Financial aid is a critical element of Roeper’s financial model, as more than 32% of Roeper’s net tuition revenue comes from families that receive financial aid.

The end of the 2019/2020 school year saw the onset of the pandemic causing significant impacts on the school’s operation, including no in-person classes or summer camp. While these events had a great impact the school’s finances and operations, many years of sound financial decisions between school leadership and the Finance Committee allowed Roeper to manage through the challenges.

Roeper’s financial strength underpinned the school’s ability to successfully plan and implement a pandemic model for the school.

The continued financial stewardship of Dave Fluent, David Feldman and the Finance Committee will allow Roeper to keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families. F

There is no question that this past year was different. It was different for the obvious reasons — virtual learning, face masks and face shields, social distancing, etc. But what became most evident during a year of constant disruption is that we are all in this together, and we can now see more clearly how truly interdependent we are. We couldn’t have made it through this year without you. We couldn’t have done it without all of us.

A MATTER OF EQUITY Maybe the most important thing we have to do with our children is to make them ready to adapt themselves to change.

— George Roeper (1963) When COVID-19 arrived in Michigan last March, we were deep in the throes of building out A Matter of Equity, our public-private partnership between The Roeper Institute, The Roeper School and Detroit Public Schools Community District, designed to build the knowledge and practice base of DPSCD and Roeper teachers in meeting the needs of low-income and culturally diverse gifted and talented children. After completing a two-week intensive summer training in 2019 led by the incredible team of experts assembled by the Center for Gifted Education at William and Mary, the academic year found our inaugural cohort gathering for a series of weekend workshops to refine their skill set, learn advanced methods, and prepare to grow their leadership capacity by assisting the CFGE team in the planned expansion to a second cohort in the summer of 2020.

With the advent of COVID-19, our Cohort 1 teachers faced a whole new set of unexpected challenges as DPSCD attempted to grapple with pandemic education, including how to feed a majority Title I student population and offer remote learning when so many students lacked equipment and access to the internet. Our Matter of Equity team knew we had to reorient our project delivery model and timetable around the new reality and needs of our teachers. In the words of George Roeper, we had to apply our collective gifts and capacity to “revising what is known, exploring the unknown and constructing new forms”.

I am pleased to report that our team rose to that challenge — and then some. After surveying our cohort, we developed a “Pick Your Own Continued Learning Path”: an eight-module rich remote learning summer-fall plan which included group and individual assignments and synchronous and asynchronous sessions, designed to reinforce skills and knowledge from earlier learning and provide opportunity for advanced professional development in gifted education. We also designed a highly successful four-part series of Fall Saturday Workshops where the cohort came together (by Zoom of course!) for an intimate opportunity to learn from some of the most respected national experts in the field of gifted

education. In a revised form of scaling up the project, William and Mary is developing a rich digital library of resources that will be available to all DPSCD and Roeper educators free of charge.

Finally, with the continued support from William and Mary and our own exceptional Roeper counselors, we are developing a set of summer 2021 workshops for DPSCD school counselors who are often in the spaces and places where a foundational knowledge on recognizing gifted and talented children and their special needs could make a significant impact in meeting those needs.

The host of complex, existential issues magnified during this past year — from public health to public discourse health — underscore better than any case we could have articulated — how the nurturing and full development of our gifted and talented children is a matter of equity and of profound national importance. Our project’s adaptation models the critical thinking and problem-solving and creative collaboration that is at the heart of the pedagogy and instructional practices we are helping our teachers develop for not just their gifted and talented students, but all of their students. Amidst this robust activity, our Board of Directors has begun planning for the next phase of The Roeper Institute. As I look to observing nearly 60 years as a proud member of the Roeper community, I am delighted to share that as of July 1, 2021, Roeper community member extraordinaire, Sarah Miller, will be assuming the role of Associate Director of The Roeper Institute. Sarah holds a Master’s Degree in Social Justice from Marygrove College and has done extensive work in the DEI field, including co-creating and co-leading Roeper’s White AntiRacism Allyship Group. Sarah and her husband, Kenny, are the very proud parents of Roeper

alumna Alexa ‘20, and Elyse ‘24. Sarah is that rare combination of “visionary” and “doer” and “empowerer of others.” I cannot wait to see how The Roeper Institute will evolve under the shared guidance of Sarah and our dedicated Board of Directors.

GOLF OUTING 2020 The in-person outing was cancelled due to COVID-19. To maintain the tradition, we decided to go virtual with the help of Lincoln Hills Golf Course. We offered several sponsorship and participation levels. From simply joining the raffle to being an Eagle sponsor, we felt we offered the entire community an opportunity to support Roeper Athletics. Participants were given a voucher for golf and lunch and entered a raffle that was drawn live on Zoom. We were able to cultivate prize donors and utilize some items left over from the 2019 outing. All participant received something from a Roeper Athletics travel coffee mug to passes to this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. Sponsors received recognition on the video board at the C.C.B and in the program of the soccer districts and a plaque on the “get in the game” board in the gym. Gross proceeds were $7,300, and we are waiting for the plaques to come in for final net numbers. We hope to continue those incentives in the future to greater utilize the tools we already possess.
