STATE OF THE SCHOOL

In discussing the State of the School, it is important to understand that The Roeper School is run with reflective and professional care, that our governance model is strategic, and our financial oversight is responsible. We are very proud of the success of our students, their love of learning, their passion for inquiry, and the mentoring relationships they construct with our faculty. Our teachers are second to none — thoughtful, engaging, and themselves life-long learners.

The success that we experience as a school is like that of a great jazz band — different members of our organization playing different instruments, but working collaboratively to live the philosophy, and playing together in an amazing blend of music.

Like the jazz band, community members know when we are not in sync, when we don’t collaborate well, communicate clearly, or work toward common goals. And still, through good will, and strong dedicated effort we work, we practice, we learn, and we grow — together!

Recently I brought together our Admissions Department, Development Department and our Marketing and Communications Team into a new collaborative group called the Advancement Team.

This cross-departmental partnership is a strategic example of coordinating our communication, keeping focused on our mission, and making sure our messaging to our internal and external community is clear. We see in the classroom the way team teaching and interdisciplinary curriculum creates a stronger learning environment, and so we are applying these same lessons to the business side of our operations.

Like the Business Office and our academic program, Advancement is a critical part of our strategic operations. Making sure families have the appropriate information they need, communicating the activities and needs of our community, and ensuring that we continue to retain families through commencement form the collaborative efforts of this team. We want to make sure that people in the community, and those considering joining the community, have the information they need to help us thrive as a school.

Setting priorities for a school like Roeper is done in partnership with our Board of Trustees. We work very hard as a team to think strategically about the challenges and opportunities that might present themselves in the near and distant future.

We work very hard to care for the resources of the school, to ensure our students and families have a successful and enriching experience as Roeperians.

At the top of this list is the care and well-being of our faculty and staff. We know that the relationships between teachers and students are at the core of what makes a Roeper education meaningful.

While it is beginning to fade into history, we know the most recent recession landed heavily on teacher and staff wages and benefits. As the recovery took shape, our board and financial team made it our priority to ensure that our faculty and staff received a salary and benefits package that reflected our deep respect for the work they do. As I shared with

When we think of the operations of a school, most of us focus on the relationship between teachers and students; some will talk about the development of curriculum; and in this community, most people will discuss the philosophy that exists as the underpinning guide for the operations. Yet all of us know at a much deeper level that the operation of the school is dependent on a much larger group of systems and structures. Roeper’s annual operation budget is around $17 million, and it takes a strong, dedicated and thoughtful team of professionals to ensure that this fine institution will be here not just for our current families, but for generations to come.

As part of this strategic planning process, the Board contracted with Marc Frankel and Judy Schectman, consultants from Triangle Associates in St. Louis, to help facilitate our discussions and planning process. Marc and Judy are independent school professionals who have worked with schools like Roeper for almost 30 years. Thanks to their guidance, we engaged in a series of focus group meetings, a community survey, and a retreat attended by 60 community members.

The process gathered the thoughts, ideas, and reflections of our community, and has helped us shape a document that will guide how we invest our resources as Roeper begins its next 75 years.

Led by Board Chair-Designate Ashley Lowe, the Strategic Planning Committee of the Board is working to draft the document and share it with the community next fall.

In the process of gathering survey data, and holding face to face conversations, you shared with us some very important insights that are already guiding the development of our plan. You asked some critical questions:

How do we build a One School ethos on two campuses and in three divisions?

What does it mean to serve a gifted population at Roeper?

What are the best methods for us to employ to recruit, nurture, and sustain our faculty?

How does Roeper shift from a financial model that is tuitiondependent?

Our community spent a great deal of time constructing the last plan, and most importantly to me as an incoming head, the plan reflected a consensus of what you said was important. It included guidance on what the Roeper community said was the way we should move forward with deploying our resources.

Over the last six years, I have worked with the community to bring that document to life. Together, we have articulated our Core Tenets, published our Educational Statement of Purpose, revised our Mission Statement, and expanded our instruction on the Roeper history, philosophy, and what it means to be gifted. We have worked diligently to strengthen our financial model by creating and regularly updating a five-year financial plan, we have benchmarked faculty salaries and benefits, strengthened our growth and review process, mapped our curriculum, and engaged in new forms of electronic communication. We made strategic decisions around our master campus plan, and invested in the infrastructure of our Birmingham Campus, culminating with the construction of the new Naas Learning Commons. At the same time, we developed a new partnership with Ultimate Soccer to support our athletic program, and strengthened our technological infrastructure on both campuses.

Our strategic plan led to partnerships with the E.E. Ford Foundation, the Malone Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and Student Shoulder to Shoulder. We celebrated our 75th Anniversary with new and expanded outreach to our alumni community, and we re-invigorated the Roeper Institute by hosting a Symposium with the Damon

As we begin the work of our next strategic plan, it is also important to note that our last plan was not a dusty document that sat on a shelf.

One of the goals I set when I joined the community was to use the strategic document developed by the Board to set my annual

We know that gifted students are in all schools, and access to programs like we offer at Roeper is not possible for all gifted students.

So how can we make a difference?

How can we share resources and learn from each other?

Thanks to the good discussions begun in our A Matter of Equity Symposium last year, the E.E. Ford Foundation has named Roeper a finalist for a matching $250,000 grant to help fund this three-year project.

Our last strategic plan was more than a series of bullet points on a list; it was more than a binder on a shelf or computer file that never got re-opened.

Our strategic plan was an action plan that we as a community decided to bring to life. As we complete that plan and construct the next, let me highlight three final pieces of the plan that we have realized this year.

I want to take a moment to offer my most sincere thanks to Buck Baker, Chair of our Board of Trustees.

It has been my privilege to have Buck as my partner in shepherding our school.

Our partnership with the Malone Foundation produced our membership in the Malone Schools Online Network, a set of video conferencingbased, high level, high school seminar classes in real time that has expanded our Upper School course book. This year nine Roeper students participated in our pilot year of participation, taking classes in math, humanities and computer science. Next year, Roeper faculty members Dan Jacobs and Andrew Blechman will expand our participation in the program and offer new classes to the network as we continue to be full and engaged partners in this consortium of schools.

We have started our fund raising to complete the Designing for the Difference Capital Campaign.

Our thoughtful and generous community has transformed the Birmingham Campus by adding an additional 9,000 square feet of space to the area that was our courtyard. Our Learning Commons, Library, and Café make a difference in the lives of every community member on our Birmingham Campus today and for years to come. Phase II of our project will include the addition of a fullservice kitchen offering students made to order food from 7:30am to 4:30pm; a quiet study space and faculty room; and the renovation of our main offices. This $1.2 million project will, like the Phase I portion of the project, be paid for by philanthropic gifts from members of the Roeper community.

Through the leadership of the Roeper Institute, The Roeper School is engaging in a public/private partnership with Detroit Public Schools to bring a three-week summer professional development opportunity to faculty in DPS and Roeper. The program will help teachers learn how to identify gifted students in the mainstream classroom, and what new methods and tools teachers can employ to support gifted students. We know that gifted students are in all schools, and access to programs like we offer at Roeper is not possible for all gifted students. So how can we make a difference? How can we share resources and learn from each other?

I could not have asked for a more engaged and thoughtful partner. Buck has been a mentor, a friend, and the leader Roeper has needed these past four years on the Board. He’s an alumni parent, so I know he will not be too far from us, but I hope you will join me in offering a very special thank you to Buck for his service, his guidance, and his care — he is a true Roeperian! A TRIPLE THANK YOU FROM THE CHAIR This concludes my tenth and final year on the Board, and my fourth and final year as Chair. Given that, I want to use my space here to express my deep thanks to the entire Roeper community — parents, students, faculty, administrative and leadership staff for three things.

First, thank you for what you made possible and what you did over the past 10 years: With your vital involvement and engagement, the School has accomplished a great many things, including but not limited to: • increasing enrollment by 15%; • completing the broadest and deepest Capital Campaign in the history of the school; • completing the Children’s Library and the Naas Learning Commons; these two learning and community spaces have already shown the capacity to literally change the way every student learns, every day, for decades to come; • increased its endowment by 100%, and its reserves by a significant amount; • made important advances in its internal and external communications, structure and processes, advances that significantly improve the school’s ability to engage seamlessly and continuously with families and students throughout the full length of their relationship with the school; • dramatically advanced its use of technology in teaching and learning; and • lastly, but MOST importantly, the School continued to live, and live up to, its unique Philosophy and Mission.

Second, thank you for what I learned in partnering with you: Working with you has helped me to better understand the issues we are facing as a society. It has helped me to understand how those issues are affecting the people I’m closest to and care most about — that’s you. And it has helped me to reshape and reaffirm my own personal commitments to our shared philosophy.

Third, thank you for the sheer fun of it all.

The best part of all of this is that this kind of work is inherently social; you can’t do these types of things alone. And for every meeting, every coffee, every basketball game, every film, and every other kind of event, I thank you. They were all a kind of reward in and of themselves; they were all fun.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW As Roeper successfully celebrated its 75th Anniversary, our solid financial position continued to improve.

Our ISACS review complimented us on our progress on the school’s finances and acknowledged we still have further work to do. Due to our stronger finances, David Feldman, in conjunction with the faculty, administration and Board of Trustees, devoted additional resources toward meeting the goals of our strategic plan.

Continue to Support and Attract Great Faculty and Staff — Roeper’s longevity is due to the strength of the faculty and administration. Retention of our talented teachers and staff is vital to Roeper’s long-term success. We are pleased to share that during the 2016/2017 school year, teacher salaries were increased by 5% and approximate the benchmark salaries of other Midwestern independent schools.

The Finance Committee has worked closely with the school’s leadership to establish the annual budget and to make sound financial decisions to not only benefit this year, but to also keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families.

Improve Facilities by Addressing Deferred Maintenance Needs and Major Improvements to the Birmingham Campus — With the completion of Phase 1 of the Birmingham campus courtyard project in 2016/2017, the administration and especially the development team worked tirelessly to raise more than $4 million to help fund this project. At the same time, we also invested in the ongoing maintenance of all our facilities to ensure we have properly maintained buildings and grounds for our students and staff.

Continue to Strengthen our Financial Model — Roeper’s endowment, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased 5.8% to more than $7 million as a result of donations and prudent investment management. By continuing to grow the endowment, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable.

Support the Mission through Increased Financial Aid — While financial strength is important to the longterm viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success. George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels. As a result of an improving financial position, Roeper was able to continue to provide more than $2.2 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community. Financial aid is a critical element of Roper’s financial model as more than 35% of Roeper’s tuition revenue comes from families who receive financial aid.

David Feldman and Dave Fluent provide Roeper with strong financial stewardship. Their leadership has resulted in an improved financial position over the past several years. The Finance Committee has worked closely with the school’s leadership to establish the annual budget and to make sound financial decisions to not only benefit this year, but to also keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families. The Roeper School is appreciative of the many donors who have supported the Roeper Annual Fund year after year. As you review the annual fund donor list within this Annual Report, note that each name listed in bold represents an individual or family who has contributed to the Roeper Annual Fund for five or more consecutive years. We are incredibly grateful to these longtime supporters and equally grateful for the many new donors whose gifts are vital to the daily workings of The Roeper School.

A strong Roeper School depends on a strong Annual Fund.

As is the case with most independent schools, Roeper solicits charitable gifts through our Annual Fund to help fill the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of operating the school. Tuition is intentionally set lower in an effort to help more families afford our school and avoid outpricing some of our most promising students. Each gift to the Roeper Annual Fund, at any level, helps us reach the goal needed to sustain our program and maintain our position as a worldwide leader in gifted education with one of the most diverse student populations in Michigan. In short, a strong Roeper School depends on a strong Annual Fund.

As a single group, current parents continue to be the Annual Fund’s greatest supporters. However, it is important to acknowledge that Roeper alumni and alumni parents account for nearly half of all Annual Fund donors. Alumni have always been enthusiastic supporters of the School, but alumniinspired contests, like the recent matching gift challenge from a 1983 alumna, have increased our alumni participation even more.

As Roeper matures in age and welcomes a new graduating class into its alumni family each year, we move closer towards an independent school model in which significant portions of Annual Fund donors are alumni families. Growing support from Roeper alumni is not only vital for sustaining the school, but also serves as an invaluable endorsement of the Roeper education they received.

It is through the generous support of our farreaching Roeper community that The Roeper School is able to continue to make a real, lasting impact on students and the world. Therefore, it is my honor to take this opportunity to thank each one of you. Thank you! F

ROEPER’S MAKE-A-SPLASH PROGRAM

The Roeper School has continued the commitment of community outreach for important projects that align with our mission and philosophy. The USA Swimming Foundation Make-A-Splash program is among our most valued and celebrated equity and justice projects, and we are committed to sustaining its viability through our own operation budget allocations. We see evidence of the continuing need in the growing numbers of participants. This year we celebrated our eighth year anniversary of The Roeper School Make-ASplash program.

Our Roeper School MakeA-Splash program directly benefits children who would not otherwise receive the opportunity to learn to swim by providing group swim instructions, swim equipment and, in some cases, transportation to our pool site.

The Roeper School was honored to be named a Make-A-Splash Local partner in 2010. We have had the distinguished honor of receiving the USA Swimming Foundation Make-A-Splash grant of $10,500 in 2013 and $5,000 in 2016, and a new award of $5,000 for 2018! Our Roeper MakeA-Splash program runs concurrently with our Roeper Summer Day Camp program — which operates four sessions in the summer. Each session is two weeks in duration. Some children sign up for the full eight weeks; some sign up for a two-week session. During this program, group swim lessons are offered for five days, one hour in length. These group swim lessons are offered at the cost of $60 for campers. Those students who qualify as Make-A-Splash participants are offered swim lessons scholarships so that they receive the same swim instruction for $10 for the five-day lessons. In 2017, The Roeper School was delighted to have 136 children who qualified to be sponsored as a Roeper Make-A-Splash participants to our expanding group of nearly 300 new swimmers! Our school’s philosophy and mission statement demands that we continue to commit to achieve a diversity of race, culture, economics and physical well-being for all of the students and families in our community. Our founders, George and Annemarie Roeper, were devout anti-racist and social justice activists. Diversity was central to George and Annemarie Roeper as educators and humanitarians, and the importance of interdependence is also core to the Roeper philosophy.

Increased access remains a central goal of our outreach efforts, and we are delighted to share that our participants hail from four counties in the region — Oakland, Wayne, Macomb and Washtenaw. This remarkable representation also provides increased cultural and geographic mindfulness for our swimmers and their families.

All of our swim instructors are certified lifeguards.

We follow the guidelines of having 6:1 student: teacher ratios — often lower. In addition to our certified swim instructors, we have many student volunteers assisting the instructors. These students are on swim teams at their respective schools, and they are required to attend our swim instructor’s orientation.

Since our beginning in 2010 our number of participants has grown exponentially. We have an outdoor pool complex, so our program operates only in the summer. In 2010 we began our program with approximately 50 students participating in the Make-A-Splash program. In 2015, we had 152 Make-A-Splash participants.

We sponsor all of the qualified Make-A-Splash participants.

Our Roeper School Make-A-Splash program directly benefits children who would not otherwise receive the opportunity to learn to swim by providing group swim instructions, swim equipment and, in some cases, transportation to our pool site. Our program quantifies and identifies participants by requiring participants’ parents/guardians to fill out an application.

Included on the application is income level and number of children in the household. We ask families if they qualify for free or reduced lunch programs at their home schools and use the government guidelines to help determine need.

We also ask for race/ethnicity, to further ascertain that we have an inclusive group of participants.

We use the aforementioned criteria to select scholarship recipients.

We have reached beyond our doors to our neighboring swimming communities — such as high school swim teams and swim clubs — to assist as volunteers to work in our program. Each year this number increases and fosters a win-win situation. The children in the program gravitated to youth instructors and made tremendous progress.

The volunteers were committed and dedicated to these children, and it was wonderful to see the mutual exchange of appreciation and joy.

To date, the Make-A-Splash program at The Roeper School has served over 600 participants. F

Middle/Upper School World Language Instructor

CHINESE STUDY — PATHWAY TO GLOBAL COMPETENCE The Chinese language program at Roeper continues to grow steadily both in the number of students participating and the depth of the program. In numbers from the last full school year, 33 Middle and Upper School students took Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Mandarin language study classes in 2016/17, while two seniors conducted independent study projects.

Roeper is one of approximately 100 schools in the country, and one of three in Michigan, that is a member of the Asia Society Confucius Classrooms Network. Schools are selected through a competitive application process designed to identify exemplary language programs in schools committed to

The curriculum is focused on functional proficiency in Chinese through listening and reading skills, as well as oral and writing skills. In addition to language study, the students are immersed in Chinese culture, which has been more deeply integrated into the language curriculum. While there are not Chinese language classes in the Lower School at this time, the Middle and Upper School students advance their proficiency by connecting with Lower School students on cultural topics, including an annual Chinese New Year celebration with Stage III. Technology is playing a more active role in the learning process. Students at all levels are more familiar with using Quizlet to practice learned vocabulary and submitting oral or writing assignments online by using voice recording devices and Chinese word processing software.

The Confucius Classrooms program provides funding for professional development, travel to conferences, classroom materials, and more. Funding in 2016/17 supported teacher professional development, a Chinese class field trip, a Chinatown tour in Chicago for the entire 8th grade, and classroom supplies and teaching materials. One of the goals of Asia Society is to continuously advance the pedagogy of teaching Chinese, and a monthly newsletter from its Chinese Learning Initiative Team shares the newest trends in the field. Strong support from Roeper parents and the other academic departments also help expand the capacity and progress of Roeper’s Chinese program.

To become citizens of the world, as George and Annemarie urged, requires empathy, study, experience and commitment. Thanks to the support of the Confucius Classrooms Network, Roeper is better able to fulfill its ability to educate students to understand and engage intelligently with China, one of the oldest and largest civilations with whom we share this earth. THE ROEPER GOLF OUTING From its inception 22 years ago, the Roeper Golf Outing has become a time-honored tradition, serving as the major fundraiser for the Roeper Athletic Department in support of our student athletes. Having raised $15,000 in 2017, it’s no wonder that we get excited about this event. From monsoons to amazing sun-filled days, we’ve weathered a variety of conditions over the years, always with a focus on ensuring that golfers of all abilities have a great time, and that our deserving athletes come away the winners.

In countless ways — small and large — the generosity of community members plays a vital and essential role in meeting The Roeper School mission. We appreciate the everyday considerations of your “time, talent and treasure” and honor the extraordinary gestures that place us among your philanthropic priorities and legacy interests.

As with all institutions of a “certain age,” and those experiencing a wonderful trajectory of facility and endowment growth, we have spent some considerable attention honoring a thoughtful posture of donor recognition. Fortunately for us, the Roeper philosophy is the compass that guides our considerations. It reaffirms that all of us are obligated to act and that by extension — all are greatly valued.

For example, Annemarie Roeper offered this response to a Roeper 6th grader’s question: “What do you think is the secret to being a good leader and what can you do to improve as a leader?”

I believe that the question is not the most relevant one to ask. Perhaps you should ask what needs to be done, fixed or accomplished, and how you should undertake what needs to be done rather than focusing on being a leader for the sake of being a leader. Sometimes one needs to be a leader, and sometimes a follower, and sometimes a collaborator, depending on which role accomplishes the goal of making the situation or community better. Focusing on what is beyond one’s self usually is the best path to finding oneself and finding one’s proper role in the community.

The honor of acknowledging each wonderful donation and every caring deed creates a meaningful and lasting opportunity to extend our gratitude for all of the roles that Annemarie suggests make the community better.
