ON THE COVER The Roeper School is an independent coeducational day school for gifted and talented children preschool through grade 12 and an equal-opportunity institution

Mixed-media mural. This mural was created last fall by Kendra McKenzie’s Stage I class as a part of the Lower School’s study of “Community.” The class read many picture books about murals and community art projects in preparation for and while collaborating on this piece. The mural was created over many weeks using markers, oil pastels, liquid watercolors, chalk, colored and clear tape, and washable paint.

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR 168?

This past September our Board of Trustees approved our new strategic plan. The document includes a strong focus on the health and well-being of our community. I am very proud of the work our teachers and students do together in the classroom every day; the academic experience at Roeper is second to none. At the same time, I am particularly thankful for the work we do to focus on the social and emotional needs of our community.

The new strategic plan keeps this holistic approach in mind as we review ways to help our students and teachers find balance in the school day and beyond. Indeed, our daily schedule is one area where this focus on balance is most crucial.

When I talk with students about their schedules, I remind them that there are only 168 hours in a week. You can claim to give 110%, try to be in more than one place at the same time, multi-task, cram, or avoid sleep, but at the end of the week there are still 168 hours. What do you do with your 168? Better yet, have you sat with your child to map out their daily 24? It can be a powerful exercise for both of you. Eating, sleeping, and play are all essential elements of a healthy 24 — do you make the time?

How do you pace your day? When are you at your most productive? Most efficient? Most creative? Each of us has a rhythm that guides and paces our day — we can feel when we need to eat, take a break, or write that epic novel that has been weaving its way through our consciousness for the last few weeks. As adults, we by and large get to set the pace to our days. Some of us are even fortunate enough to have assistants who pace our schedules for us, think through our week, our month, or even what our year looks like when we are not able to bring such focus to the task.

But what about our students? What do their schedules look like? How do they pace themselves through the day, the week, the month, the semester, or even the school year? With few exceptions, student schedules are determined by the adults who shape them — we set the pace for the day. Then, if you are a Roeper student, often you find yourself overextending that day to take a variety of interesting classes and extracurricular opportunities that seem too interesting to miss.

With ever-expanding schedules comes the need for the required time to prepare, complete homework, and yes, make time to eat well, sleep, and engage socially in non-school activities. The need for strong executive functioning skills is not a new topic; it is a challenge for young people and adults alike. Yet, as the adults who shape the boundaries of these schedules, it is incumbent upon us to ask important questions about the health and well-being of our young people.

How do we construct systems and structures within the school day that acknowledge the need for our young people (and the adults who work with them) to successfully engage in their studies in a meaningful way, at a pace that allows for depth of inquiry, time for reflection, and a healthy lifestyle.

Over the past six months, The Roeper School has been working with a consulting team from Independent School Management (ISM) to review our current practices, talk with different constituency groups, study the schedules on both campuses, and through the lens of health and wellbeing, make recommendations to us on how we can make improvements to better pace the school day, week, semester, and year.

Our strategic plan calls on us to focus on community health. Through this work, we hope to gain the wisdom of outside eyes, and professionals in the independent school community. From the research into our current practices, we hope to gain insight and guidance as we seek to better support our gifted learners in a manner consistent with our philosophy.

On Monday March 18th, Roxanne Higgins, President of ISM, met with faculty and staff during our professional development day. Roxanne shared a series of recommendations that included several different scheduling models for us to consider.

Our strategic plan calls on us to focus on community health.

From the research into our current practices, we hope to gain insight and guidance as we seek to better support our gifted learners in a manner consistent with our philosophy.

Through her work with our school, Roxanne heard our community share eight critical priorities that needed to be present in a Roeper schedule:

As we think strategically about ways to live our philosophy, we know we can also provide a school environment that is healthy and consistent with the progressive teachings that George and Annemarie believed were at the core of our teaching methods.

Over the next 18 months we will be studying the ISM recommendations, transitioning to a new schedule based on the core priorities we shared, and participating in the professional development that is essential for our teachers to be successful in whatever new model we select.

We are committed to being true to our core values and at the same time ensuring that the school environment is healthy for students and faculty.

Thanks to the good work we accomplished in constructing our strategic plan, we are asking important questions about how we spend our 168.

We believe the social and emotional health and well-being of our community must be a priority.

We will continue to do strong work pacing the academic challenges of each Roeper student, and we will help them pace their schedules in ways that are meaningful, appropriate, and healthy. F

DEVELOPING AN ASPIRATIONAL ROADMAP

I am honored to have the opportunity to share with you some reflections on my first year as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Officially, the role of the Board is to focus on the long-term sustainability of the school and to ensure that the school is able to fulfill the role and mission defined by our founders. In doing so, we rely on the School’s Philosophy and its Strategic Plan.

This year we completed and approved our new Strategic Plan — RoeperNext. One of the most important obligations of the Board of Trustees is to think strategically about the needs and resources of the school and to construct a plan that guides us in our work.

The development of this new plan, spanning a full year and including input from all members of the extended Roeper community, was profoundly Roeperian. We were intentionally inclusive and deliberative, allowing time for thoughtful feedback at every step of the process.

We began with focus groups and a survey in which students, alumni, faculty, staff, board members, and parents shared their thoughts about the school, identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement. We then invited a wide crosssection of community members to attend our strategic planning retreat where we discussed big ideas and goals for the school, focusing on the issues raised by the focus groups.

The strategic planning committee, also representing all segments of the Roeper community, developed the concepts discussed at the retreat into a set of strategic initiatives for the school. After receiving feedback on the initiatives from the retreat participants, faculty, students, and the board, this committee worked over the summer of 2018 to incorporate community input and refined the initiatives.

This plan is not a work plan or a to-do list for school administrators. Rather, it is aspirational.

It is a roadmap, designed to keep us focused on our mission and the long-term growth and development of the school, providing a guide to the board and administration on how best to prioritize our resources. This plan reflects where Roeper is as a school, moving into its second 75 years with strong and experienced leadership.

George and Annemarie Roeper keenly understood the transient nature of what the world can demand from an individual. The ideas and systems that have brought this generation to where we are today will not be enough to take this next generation to where they are going — our children must be able “to deal with the unknown future.”

As our School enters its next 75 years, we understand the need to think strategically and maintain the flexibility to adjust to the unknowns we will certainly encounter. This plan reflects the need to strengthen and live our core identity, nurture the relationships that form the center of the Roeper educational experience, and steward the responsibility of providing the resources for future generations of Roeper students.

The Strategic Initiatives:

based teaching and learning of gifted students in a progressive school committed to equity and justice. > Strengthen individual and community health and wellness for a diverse and inclusive school. > Steward the care of future generations of Roeperians through mindful financial planning with a lens toward sustainability, philanthropic action, and accessibility.

We live in exponential times, where innovation and disruption to practices, systems, and markets happen more rapidly each year; this strategic plan is a navigational tool on our journey. We can be sure that the nature of school will certainly evolve as changes make their way into our practices and programs — we will need a compass.

The Roeper Philosophy has, and will continue to be our north star, providing the guidance that helps us hold firm to our core values, providing the ethical framework for how we will direct our lives as individuals, and to engage as a community with compassion for each other and for this world.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW – 2017/2018 Following a very successful 75th anniversary year of celebration, Roeper’s financial position continued to improve in 2017/2018. As we closed the school year under the previous strategic plan, we look to the future with the adoption of the new strategic plan. Due to our stronger finances, David Feldman, the faculty, administration and Board of Trustees devoted additional resources toward enhancing Roeper’s nearterm and long-term finances.

Continue to Support and Attract Great Faculty and Staff — Roeper’s longevity is due to the strength of the faculty and administration. Retention of our talented teachers and staff is vital to Roeper’s long-term success. We are pleased to share that during the 2017/2018 school year, salaries were increased by >2% and are at the benchmark salaries of other Midwestern independent schools.

The Finance Committee has worked closely with the school’s leadership to establish the annual budget and to make sound financial decisions to not only benefit this year but to also keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families.

Improve Facilities by Addressing Deferred Maintenance Needs and Major Improvements to the Birmingham Campus — With the completion of Phase I of the Birmingham campus courtyard project in 2016/2017, the Development team turned its attention to Phase II of the Capital Campaign to finish the improvements to the Birmingham campus. The major components of this campaign include a full, working kitchen, a space devoted to students with twice-exceptional learning requirements and finally long-needed improvements and upgrades to administrative office space. Total cost for these projects is $1.2 million, and the Development team has had good fundraising initial success. At the same time, we also invested in the ongoing maintenance of all our facilities to ensure we have properly maintained buildings and grounds for our students and staff.

Continue to Strengthen our Financial Model — Roeper’s endowment, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased 6.9% to more than $7 million as a result of donations and prudent investment management. By continuing to grow the endowment, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable.

Support the Mission through Increased Financial Aid — While financial strength is important to the longterm viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success. George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels. As a result of an improving financial position, Roeper was able to continue to provide more than $2.2 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community. Financial aid is a critical element of Roper’s financial model as more than 35% of Roeper’s tuition revenue comes from families who receive financial aid.

David Feldman and Dave Fluent provide Roeper with strong financial stewardship. Their leadership has resulted in an improved financial position over the past several years. The Finance Committee has worked closely with the school’s leadership to establish the annual budget and to make sound financial decisions to not only benefit this year but to also keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families. It’s been an exciting year for the Roeper Annual Fund. With this in mind, the alumni office recently launched an Alumni Leadership Council whose goal is to develop, encourage, and grow alumni support for the School’s mission and to maintain and promote lasting and meaningful connections between the School and its alumni. One focus of the alumni council is to provide leadership for building a culture of stewardship and philanthropy among Roeper alumni.

With the enthusiasm of the new Alumni Leadership Council members, and a 30% increase in participation and dollars raised from current families over the past year, we look forward to continuing the trend of a growing Annual Fund. A strong Annual Fund fuels the School’s ability to maintain extraordinarily low student-teacher ratios, retain talented teachers, provide enriching arts and athletics programs, and keep tuition at a level that allows for a diverse student body and much more. Most importantly, the Roeper Annual Fund makes it possible for students to receive exceptional opportunities that allow them to flourish as individuals.

PARTING THOUGHTS I have been the recipient of a gift that was not intended for me and, in fact, it is more of my own appropriation.

Over the last few years, and in a variety of settings, I have had the privilege of introducing the “Roeper kids” — Tom, Peter and Karen — to community members. The immediate wonderment and reverence from students, parents, faculty and staff on meeting George and Annemarie’s children is palpable.

Witnessing this moving exchange is the gift I give myself.

In this year of Annemarie Roeper’s Centenary, we are reminded of the wealth of her prolific writings and guidance of our timeless philosophy. Nonetheless, it sometimes feels as if the actual embodiment of the Roeper legacy passes between these exchanges.

We are deeply grateful for the gift of their increased presence. Both individually and collectively, Karen, Peter and Tommy have made a significant impact on the present day community. Their generosity has been extraordinary!

On a sequential schedule that Head of School David Feldman has established, George and Annemarie’s children share their distinct and powerful perspectives about their parents at our Commencement exercises. In addition, each has treated us to independent and robust visits where they have shared their respective professional pursuits. Mindfulness, governance and linguistics are among their many domains, but they have also been eager to read to Stage I students, to lead staff in stress-relieving exercises to some of Motown’s greatest hits, and to remove overgrown brush in the Community Garden at Auntie Na’s House in Detroit.

The strength of the Roeper mission continues … Educating and inspiring gifted students to think as individuals and to engage a community with compassion for each other and this world ... in part because of the Roeper children’s abiding commitment to their parents’ legacy.

This expression of philanthropy by the “Roeper Kids” is incalculable and cherished.
