GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD
As I sit down to write this message at the start of February, I am now a (“full” or “mere,” depending on one’s perspective) seven months into my tenure as Head of School If the restrictions and preoccupations of COVID have not altogether vanished from sight, they are certainly receding in the rearview mirror, and a renewed energy born of personal connection has returned to our campuses I find myself both bewildered by the speed with which time has passed and overwhelmed by what we have achieved in that time
My deadline for this Annual Report also coincides with my first State of the School presentation
As someone for whom this is a new experience (the State of the [insert entity here] address is neither a political nor an academic tradition in Canada), the challenge for me in preparing both that presentation and this message has been not to decide what needs to be included, but rather what to leave out This school year has already been so full of significant moments — meaningful, thoughtful (and often frenetic) activity; community events; academic, artistic, and athletic successes — it is difficult to condense them to a few short paragraphs Suffice to say that what I will chronicle here represents only a fraction of what is taking place at Roeper
With an overall student population of 521, enrollment is healthy, and one can see innovative, student-centered teaching and learning taking place on and between both campuses each and every day As their students readjust to fully inperson learning, in addition to their usual focus on high-quality instruction, teachers in the Lower School are emphasizing social-emotional learning and responsive classrooms In Birmingham, this year has seen the opening of Sara’s Room, our brand-new student resource center; a makerspace; and with the financial support of the school, a completely redesigned Adams Park
In athletics we have seen nearly 300 students across both campuses playing on 28 teams in seven different sports along with the return of the perennial favourite Spooky Volleyball Our actors, dancers, singers, and musicians have played to packed houses, and our corridors are once again filled with student sketches and sculptures, photographs and paintings
We were privileged to host the classes of ’71, ’72, and ’73 on campus in the fall, and to join with alumni spanning some 40 years at a recent event in New York, the restaurant staff having to usher us out of the restaurant because closing time had come and gone Planning for this year’s MOSAIC auction is well underway
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice continue to suffuse all that we do at Roeper One of the very first things we did as a community of faculty and staff at the start of the year was to engage in professional learning on the topic of restorative practices, which we followed up in October with a workshop on designing for diversity in our classrooms and workplaces We also put in place a bias incident reporting protocol and have recently engaged a highly regarded consultancy to review the results of the DEIJ audit and advise us as we take the next steps
None of these things — or the many others that I have not mentioned here — would be possible without the support of our families, faculty, and staff whose trust, stewardship, generosity, and expertise combine to provide to our students that unique, inspiring thing that is a Roeper education It is with great pride that I look back on what we have already accomplished this year, and with great excitement that I look forward to what is to come F

KIT A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
As my children first stepped into the Hill House 15 years ago, we were asking a great deal We were asking that Roeper provide a safe, nurturing environment where our children could learn and grow We were also asking a lot of our children Resilience is a word we heard a lot Our children needed to be resilient to successfully navigate their education, moving to new spaces, transitioning to new stages, new buildings, and new campuses While the transitions have gotten easier for them and us over the years, each change always brings some stress about the unknown
It is the Roeper philosophy that drew us here and kept us here The philosophy of a commitment to equal human rights, justice rather than power, and looking at each child’s needs independently
This philosophy is a universal one It is a way of life It is not limited to the school or the children in it It is based on a concept of human rights, not in theory only, but in daily living … Built into this philosophy are both constancy and change Its inherent goals remain constant while the implementation may change as life and times require — Roeper Philosophy, George & Annemarie Roeper, 1981
The resilience that we teach our students in order to prepare them for the unknown is fundamental to our philosophy This community has shown a great deal of resilience through the changes over the last few years Our recent transitions include new teachers, administrators, and a new Head of School We have emerged as strong as we have ever been, with a continued commitment to our philosophy and a strong sense of community
Christopher arrived with a deep commitment to the inherent goals of our philosophy Our philosophy is indeed a way of life, not limited to the school or the children in it I am excited and thankful that Christopher is leading our school He would have been the right person for our school at any time, and he is certainly the right person at this time I look forward to the school’s future under his leadership
I am equally excited about our new faculty and administration, who alongside our more experienced members, show an innate understanding and commitment to our philosophy The experiences and relationships they create set us apart and help ensure that our community will continue to thrive
With a strong understanding of our past and commitment to our philosophy, we are all looking forward to an exciting future This is a great time to be at The Roeper School! F

KIT FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
The COVID -19 pandemic continued to have an effect on Roeper during the 2021/2022 school year, but years of careful discussions and decisions allowed us to successfully navigate another year of the pandemic With the focus squarely on supporting our students, faculty and staff, David Feldman, Dave Fluent, and the Finance Committee worked together closely to ensure the school would provide the best program possible under the circumstances
Using the framework of Roeper’s Strategic Plan, the team focused on sub-elements of the strategy that continue to be critical for Roeper’s long-term sustainability:
• Support and Attract Great Faculty and Staff : Roeper’s longevity is due to the strength of the faculty and administration Retention of our talented teachers and staff is vital to Roeper’s longterm success We are pleased to share that during the 2021/2022 school year, salaries were increased by 4 0% and are at the benchmark salaries of other Midwestern independent schools
• Invest in Best-In-Class Facilities: The Development team continued to work on fundraising to finish the learning resource space on the third floor in Birmingham In order to complete the third floor learning space in Birmingham, the Board has voted to supplement the current funds with a release from the Special Reserves to complete the space Construction was completed in the fall of 2022
• Grow the Annual Fund: Roeper’s total Annual Fund, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased 23% to $270k as a result of increased participation and significant lead gifts By continuing to grow the annual fund, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable
• Support the Mission through Increased Financial Aid: While financial strength is important to the long-term viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels Despite the difficulties presented by the pandemic, Roeper was able to continue to provide $2 9 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community Financial aid is a critical element of Roeper’s financial model as more than 30% of Roeper’s net tuition revenue comes from families who receive financial aid
The 2021/2022 school year had numerous challenges, deferral/cancellation of many in-person activities and a scaled-back in-person summer camp program While these events have had a significant impact on finances and operations, our years of sound decision-making between the school leadership and Finance Committee allowed us to maintain our program, support the Roeper community, and continue to build our longer-term financial strength in support of future students and families F

KIT HEARTFELT THANKS
Thanks to the unprecedented generosity of our community, I am overjoyed to share that the 2021/22 Annual Fund raised over $270,000, which is more than any previous year in the school’s history!
The Annual Fund experienced a significant increase in participation levels and lead gifts and saw nearly 23% growth over the previous year This record-breaking achievement did not happen by chance It is the result of thoughtful and strategic planning in alignment with ambitious goals aimed to grow the Roeper Annual Fund to $435,000 by 2024 If that seems bold, it is! However ambitious, it is also possible and necessary
The Roeper Annual Fund is a key source of funding for the school’s operations Over the last decade, Roeper’s Annual Fund remained nearly stagnant while the costs associated with running our school continued to rise steadily Growing the Annual Fund allows us to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable and continue to support our School’s robust financial aid program
Last year The Roeper School celebrated 80 years With the sustained support of our community, Roeper will continue to make a real, lasting impact on students and the world for the next 80 years A growing Annual Fund demonstrates our community’s collective belief in, and support of, Roeper’s philosophy and mission With your continued enthusiasm, we look forward to maintaining extraordinarily low studentteacher ratios, retaining talented teachers, providing enriching arts and athletics programs, and so much more
It is my honor to acknowledge all of the donors listed within this Annual Report, many of whom have been loyally by our side for five, 10, 15, and 20+ years We are incredibly grateful to our longtime supporters and equally thankful for new donors whose gifts also support the daily workings of The Roeper School
It is truly an honor to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for your unwavering support
Thank you!
Juliette Olejnik Director of Annual Fund & Alumni Relations

KIT PARTING THOUGHTS
CAMPUS MAP: Points of Interest
On a clear day several years ago, the Roeper Admissions Office was conducting a tour of our spectacular Bloomfield Hills Campus
The prospective student was a precocious and curious nine-year-old boy, and as he approached the Pump House at the back of campus — near the Middle Building staircase — his sightlines expanded and he spotted more of the captivating grounds that lay just ahead He promptly halted his full stride and in a simultaneous Maria Von Trapp-like spin, he exclaimed, “Who pays for all of this stuff?”!
In response, his parents may have deduced that probable tuition payments may factor in a calculation of that response Yet, the simple query was astute, thoughtful and discerning and the answer is … we all do!
In this Annual Report issue of Keeping of Touch, we have introduced new recognitions to celebrate and honor the folks that “paid for all this stuff ” It includes the recognition of Roeper’s most loyal and committed donors, as well as the establishment of our Cornerstone Society The Cornerstone Society honors and applauds donors who have made cumulative gifts totalling $125,000 or more Both groups of contributors provide critical assurance for the school’s present needs and future aspirations
Roeper has been fortified by thousands of gifts — small, large and larger — and they have advanced this remarkable community of learners The partnership continues to realize George and Annemarie’s vision and our standing as the oldest independent Pre-K through Grade 12 school for gifted students in the country
We celebrate the promise of opportunity that vigorous philanthropy provides to our enduring legacy and to the unyielding commitment to the philosophy of Roeperians throughout the world
Most especially, we celebrate you and offer our continuing gratitude
Yours,
18
