INVESTMENTS

In 2013 we made a significant investment in the infrastructure of the Birmingham campus. We put on a new roof; tuck-pointed the 1917 building, replaced more than 300 windows, upgraded the hallway lighting, and did significant work to beautify the hallways and stairwells. At a cost of just over $1.5 million, the project was a significant capital investment.

Roeper students are rarely shy, and more often than not, they are able to cut through the topic of discussion and get to the heart of the matter. My alumni friend saw the issue and made sure that we did too. It’s nice to have a roof that doesn’t leak, and it’s critical that the bricks not fall from the walls on the heads of passers-by, but at the end of the day those are the things as stewards of the school we are supposed to take care of on a regular basis. All of the items listed can easily fall into the category of preventative maintenance.

As this graduating senior made clear, the student experience — the academic program — was in need, and if we were going to discuss projects with an architect we should make sure to be studentcentered in our conversation.

As we enter our 75th year and engage in all of the reflective celebrations and gatherings that will shape the next school year, we are also entering a time to look forward and to plan for the next 75 years — and beyond. As stewards of the school, it is expected that we are good caretakers of our history and philosophy. It is foundational to our school that we know our past, the core tenets that guide us, and can reflect on George and Annemarie’s wisdom. Our history and philosophy is foundational, it is the brick and mortar that holds us together. How we live that philosophy, how we bring life to that unknown future is what gives our school continued life.

Our plan focuses on developing just over 9000 square feet of additional space that is currently the courtyard at the Birmingham campus. Yet this project is so much more than added space.

Developing the center part — the literal and metaphorical heart of the campus — will be transformational to how we live and use our Middle/Upper School campus.

The project includes: collaborative spaces for social and academic gathering, the development of our library collection and space to serve the needs of 6th – 12th grade students, technology and digital infrastructure to dependably support the integration of technology into classrooms and for student use in research and online coursework, a commons with a functioning kitchen to provide lunch and snacks throughout the long days that Roeper students actively spend on campus, and finally, classrooms and quiet study spaces to meet the daily needs of faculty and students.

The celebration of our 75th anniversary will begin with a capital project that is forward looking. We will create a learning commons that encourages academic and social collaboration between our students and teachers. We will provide spaces that give students choices. We will develop through architecture, spaces that reflect how we teach and learn rather than rely on the creative use of spaces that were never designed for middle and upper school students. As my Roeper alumni friend implored, we are investing in program.

We are investing in the tools that students and teachers need to grow as individuals and engage interdependently.

Later in the year, I met with a group of graduating seniors and the architects we had just selected to lead our courtyard renovation project. We talked in great detail about the building and the money that had been spent the previous summer. After about 20 minutes of review, one student raised his hand and said, “You know all of that work is great, the building certainly needed the care — but what about the program? When are you going to invest capital project dollars in growing and developing the program?”

Our next major capital investment — the learning commons project — is about how we build from the foundation of our founders’ teachings; how we provide teachers and students with the tools they need to be leaders able to shape their destinies. Through the guidance of our Board of Trustees, the school has been engaged in outreach across constituency groups to gather the financial resources necessary to realize this vision. The Designing for the Difference Capital Campaign is the instrument we have been, and will, continue to use to raise the funds necessary to achieve our goal.

Our Birmingham teachers and students have for decades been incredibly creative with how they use building space; in fact sitting on the floor in the hallway or claiming a particular stairwell has become a badge of pride for various groups and grade levels. This sense of pride and creativity is something for which I have great respect. We are saying in our actions that the physical limitations of the building cannot stop us from developing the type of connections that make Roeper, Roeper.

While I respect the commitment and spirit behind such sentiments, I also know that having strong relationships and having functional spaces are not mutually exclusive concepts. What would Roeper be like with a library that had 10 times the collection? A building that allowed friends to have both work space and social space? Connectivity

that teachers and students could depend on for teaching, research and projects? Lunch and snack options that were not limited to a cart open for a couple of hours a day?

Transformational — that’s what this project is. It transforms the way we use our space and the way we think of space. The intentional and accidental collaboration that comes from seeing each other and engaging with each other simply because we are not in closed hallways enhances the relationships we value so intensely.

Seventy-five years — that’s a rich period of time for us to reflect upon. I hope you will make time during the coming months to return to campus and join us in this year of celebration. As we look back on where we have been, I hope you will also think deeply and reflectively about how our Philosophy continues to guide us toward our next 75 years, and as the Roepers reminded us — that glorious, ever-changing, unknown future. FROM THE CHAIR

It has been a very positive and very busy year at Roeper. Students, faculty, parents and administration continue to do amazing things. I believe there are more positive developments to talk about now than at any previous point in my 15 years as a parent, trustee or chair. You will read about a number of them elsewhere in this report. I would like to note three: ROEPER CONTINUES TO BE A STRONG COMMUNITY At this point last year, we were waiting for the results of the Climate Survey that was conducted as part of the ISACS re-accreditation process. I mention last year’s survey because it gives us insights on how we’re doing in being the community we wish to see.

The results are in. And although they have been out for a while, I think there are four findings that are worth noting again. First, they show us areas in which you would like to see the school continue to strengthen itself — financial resources, in particular. Second, the results also showed that the vast majority of our community feels that the School lives the core tenets of the philosophy either extremely well, or very well. Third, they show that we also feel strong loyalty to the school. Last, the results showed that we view the school very positively. Specifically, when asked to rate the education and environment at Roeper along roughly 20 dimensions, we view Roeper more favorably in many areas than the parents, faculty, staff, alumni and students at other schools view their schools. This struck me as very important.

ROEPER IS GROWING Of course Roeper is growing physically. As you know, all of our soccer teams now practice and play home games on a superb field at Ultimate Soccer. You might not know this, but soccer is our largest participation sport at Roeper. The School’s agreement with Ultimate Soccer really gives Roeper a third campus.

Equally as important, Roeper is growing in enrollment. If you’re a parent, you’ve experienced a year in which one of your children grew several inches, or as we somewhat inelegantly put it, had a “growth spurt.” In 2015, as a result of the efforts of many in the faculty and administration, Roeper experienced significant growth, as a result of which, the School now has its largest enrollment in 10 years!

ROEPER BENEFITS FROM THE INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS On a more anecdotal level, I’d like to end by expressing my appreciation to all of the parents in the Roeper community. Of course, Roeper has always benefitted from the time, talent and generosity of parents who volunteer at the School for years after their children have graduated. What is also apparent is that — from the classroom to activities to the RPC to the Capital Campaign to the moments of understanding and empathy that make us a community — the School is also being enormously strengthened by the wisdom, compassion, energy and ideas of a new generation of parents.

As always, I look forward to being part of the conversation with you as the school continues to work on fulfilling its important role for our children and in our community. F

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW Roeper strengthened its financial position during the 2014/2015 fiscal year due to increased enrollment, improved student retention, stronger summer camp participation and disciplined financial management.

As a result of our stronger finances, David Feldman, in conjunction with the faculty, administration and Board of Trustees, devoted resources toward meeting the goals of our strategic plan.

CONTINUE TO SUPPORT AND ATTRACT GREAT FACULTY AND STAFF In the midst of the financial crisis, we froze the salaries and eliminated the retirement match for the faculty and staff. We are pleased to share that during the 2014/15 school year, salaries were increased by 2% and an additional 1% was restored to the retirement match, which is now at 3%.

IMPROVE FACILITIES BY ADDRESSING DEFERRED MAINTENANCE NEEDS AND MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE BIRMINGHAM CAMPUS

Roeper strengthened its financial position during the 2014/2015 fiscal year due to increased enrollment, improved student retention, stronger summer camp participation and disciplined financial management.

With the completion of the renovation of the interior of the Birmingham campus during 2013/14, the administration is investigating a major capital project to significantly improve the Birmingham campus.

In addition, we also invested in the ongoing maintenance of all our facilities to ensure we have properly maintained buildings and grounds for our students and staff.

CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN OUR FINANCIAL MODEL Roeper’s endowment, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased to more than $7 million as a result of donations and prudent investment management. By continuing to grow the endowment, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable.

SUPPORT THE MISSION THROUGH INCREASED FINANCIAL AID While financial strength is important to the long-term viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success. George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels. As a result of an improving financial position, Roeper was able to continue to provide more than $2 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community.

Roeper has strong financial stewardship under Dave Fluent and David Feldman. Their leadership guided us through a very challenging economic environment over the past several years. The Finance Committee has worked closely with the school’s leadership to establish the annual budget and to make prudent financial decisions to not only benefit this year, but to also keep a clear focus on Roeper’s long-term financial strength to support future students and families. PARTING THOUGHTS At the time of this writing, we are preparing to announce the “Community Phase” of the school’s next capital campaign — Designing for the Difference — a construction project to transform the Birmingham Campus. In the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing the full scope of this effort and the remarkable components of this extraordinary enterprise.

In the interim, I think the moment and impact demands some attention.

One of those milestones is the partnership with the Malone Family Foundation and the granting of the single largest gift ever to The Roeper School of a $2 million endowment gift toward scholarship and tuition assistance. This alliance began with a chance encounter between Annemarie Roeper and Tracy Malone at a National Association of Gifted Conference nearly two decades ago, and our shared goals continue to resonate in a myriad ways throughout the school.

The privilege of enrolling Malone Family Foundation Scholars is, of course, a profound benefit to our program and one example of this significant relationship. Similarly, we have been engaged in innovative collaborations that include the documentation of pioneering gifted education practices and an exciting distance-learning platform that will play an integral role in the upcoming construction of the Birmingham Campus transformation.

A most recent example of the continuing strength of the relationship, is the creation of the “Malone Scholar Leadership Day.” This new program includes a full day of meetings with community leaders: legislators, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists and more, coupled with a luncheon and discussion with Roeper community members in these respective fields.

The first presentation exceeded our expectations and produced an exciting template. Our current Malone Scholars joined Judge Qiana Lillard — Roeper Class of 1993 — and a highly regarded Wayne County Third Circuit Court Judge, as guests in her court, followed by a contemplative lunch dialogue with the Honorable David Allen. Judge Allen is a Third Judicial Circuit Court Judge and both a current and alumni Roeper parent. Both gatherings yielded a terrific wealth of experience and insights for our students.

The Roeper School has been endowed with an unparalleled vision for education and an inspiring philosophy for life, but we have candidly had an uneven and sometimes patchy record of fundraising.

However, this “irregular record” does not represent the stunning generosity from generations of committed and visionary Roeparians and a host of friends! We have, in fact, experienced remarkable fundraising milestones in recent years.

Each day brings a new affirmation for the generosity that has shaped the foundation of the school since 1941 and is forging a lasting and even road toward our preferred future.
