Why did we do it?

A few years ago, the staff of the newspaper that my wife, Dee Ann, and I own in Alabama, were sitting around brainstorming about ways we could promote our county and to do so in a very different, and very fun way. “We should do a ‘Day in the Life’ of our county,” Dee Ann suggested. “Start making pictures at midnight one night and go 24 hours, nonstop, photographing everyday people doing what they do everyday.” So we did. It was a huge undertaking that our staff had never attempted before. But we did it and, in the end, it remains one of the most popular special editions that paper ever did. When I came to Hawkins County last November as the new publisher and editor of The Rogersville Review, the staff and I were likewise sitting around talking about ways in which we could do something similar on a local level: to give readers a little “slice of life” here in Hawkins County. Something that would be 100% good, 100% positive, and 100% about Hawkins County and its people. We set the date for Friday, April 25, 2014, and beginning at 12:01 a.m. our staff fanned out with cameras in hand. Through the cities, back roads, mountaintops and valleys we traveled ... for 24 hours. When we finished, we had covered more territory than anyone thought was possible, capturing snapshots from nearly every nook and cranny of Hawkins County, and covering a plethora of “everyday” activities that we all participate in but so many times take for granted. Why did we do it? The answer is simple. We believe that the treasures of living in

Hawkins County are truly hidden in those moments of everyday existence, tucked inside the day-to-day events that often go untold, unnoticed, and unappreciated. The stories that are written on the faces of the people who make this county’s world turn. From Mooresburg to Allandale, from Bulls Gap to Clinch, we tried to capture in pictures evidence of who we are and what we do ... from a kid waiting to board a school bus, to a waitress taking an order at a local restaurant; from math class at school to a kid hanging tightly on to granddad as he enjoys a ride on a motorcycle. The photos are of Hawkins County folks at work and play, and every place in between. In short, it’s who we are. But let us say up front that it was not our intent to attempt to photograph every business, every profession, every historic site, etc. That is far beyond the scope of this or any other newspaper. We do hope to do this “Day in the Life of Hawkins County” again in a year or so, and in that follow-up edition, we will be covering many of the everyday activities and communities which didn’t make it into this issue. And we should point out that for much of the day that Friday, it rained, which put a huge “damper” on a outdoor events that would have normally been taking place ... farmers working in their gardens, folks mowing their lawns, fixing up around their businesses, kids playing sports, etc. But for those events and dozens of others, there is always next time. And, just so that you know, all of the

Twenty-four hours later and all is well in the historic town of Rogersville as the clock in front of First Community Bank ticks toward midnight and the close of a full day of picture-taking for the Review’s first-ever, “A Day in the Life of Hawkins County.”

Continued from page 5

photos in this special edition were made spontaneously. None were “staged” or arranged in advance. Contributing staff members included Joel Spears, Wade Littleton, Pat Smith, Sharon Roberts, Christy Alvis, Abby Swearingen, Buffy Torres, Tammy Wrightson, and Tommy Campbell. Dee Ann made the 1,100-mile round trip from Alabama to be a part of this photo shoot, too. Sheldon Livesay likewise contributed many snapshots, and to Dee Ann, Sheldon, and you readers, who also contributed your own “special snapshots” — we owe a large debt of gratitude. I might add that our one-woman graphic design staff, Freda Turbyfill, did an

absolutely outstanding job of taking all of the photos and arranging them into print form. Thank you, Freda! We would also like to thank the businesses, professional clinics and others who supported this special publication with their advertising. Please take time to thank them and to patronize their places of business. Most of all, we would like to thank all of the businesses, schools, professional clinics and others who so graciously allowed us to come in and make pictures as we tried to capture the day in images. We were welcomed by so many who seemed just as excited about this special project as we were, as evidenced by the smiles you will see on faces that appear in the photos inside. Thank you to everyone who contributed,

in any way, to this “family photo album” of one day in the life of our county. For those of you who live here, we hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind special edition that is all about US and OUR home county. For those of you who are visitors here and may be thinking about moving here, we hope that through these photos you will immediately come to realize that Hawkins County is a GREAT place in which to live, work, or retire. So come on, get onboard this train as it pulls out of the station on a 24-hour tour through Hawkins County! Enjoy.
