David Hale From newspaper delivery boy in Rogersville to CEO of an international French pharmaceutical and medical device corporation with annual sales of more than $850 million
VILLEPINTE, France — David Hale recalls his first paying job as a kid growing up in rural Hawkins County, was a newspaper delivery route in the historic Town of Rogersville ... Tennessee’s second-oldest. Today, the former ‘preacher’s kid’ and Rogersville City School alumnus serves as the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officer of Guerbet, a French pharmaceutical and medical device corporation with international sales of more than $850 million (USD, 2019). David’s promotion at Guerbet, located in the Paris suburb of Villepinte, was announced by the company’s Board of Directors in mid-December of 2019, and became effective Jan. 1, 2020. “It was a long ride but definitely worth it,” David said in a recent phone interview. A pioneer in the contrast-agent field, Guerbet is a leader in medical imaging worldwide, offering a comprehensive range of imaging products, solutions, and services for Diagnostic Imaging (such as MRI, CT, Cath Lab, Digital Solutions) and Interventional Imaging (Interventional Radiology and Women’s Health). Founded more than 90 years ago, more than 85% of the company’s annual sales today are generated outside of France, and its international reach is so enormous that, somewhere in the world, one patient, every second, undergoes an imaging procedure involving a Guerbet product. The Hale family came to Hawkins County when David
was in the third grade, when his father became pastor of Rogersville Presbyterian Church, a position that the elder Hale would hold for 32 years. David, now 51, attended RCS through the eighth grade and completed his high school years at Kingsport’s Dobyns-Bennett. Growing up as a “preacher’s kid” in a small town definitely presented some challenges, he recalled. “You can run but you can’t hide,” he chuckled. “Because everybody knows everybody, they know everything you do, and you just knew that word of whatever happened was going to arrive home before you did.” As a young person, his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, a characteristic for which he is today very grateful. “I always had a job,” David said. “I learned that if you work hard, you go places. I worked in the pharmacy at the hospital for a while and there used to be a theatre in downtown Rogersville, and I worked there for a time.” His first-ever paying job, though, was a newspaper delivery route, and it was along that route — through heat, cold, rain and snow — that he met new people and developed lasting friendships. It was also on that route that he learned how much local people depend on their local newspaper for information, especially while delivering to his customers at the now-closed Card and Label plant. “A great kid from a great family”
“I may be half a world away now, but I do stay in touch,” David told the Review. “In fact, I was in Rogersville over the Christmas holidays visiting friends.” Bill and Joyce Phillips, James “Jim” and Julie Phillips, and William, Jr., and Erica Phillips remain close to this day, David said. “In fact, I was William’s babysitter when he was growing up,” he said. “I’m not sure that he wants to admit that!” Rogersville attorney Bill Phillips, William’s father, recalled that he and his wife, Joyce, moved back to Rogersville in 1976, and a year later bought a house across from the Presbyterian manse, where David’s father was pastor. “The Hales moved in the same year we got that little house,” Bill said, “so David and his brother grew up across the street, and were friends with our William, they played together, and Babysitting William at were pretty much fixtures at our house. home Nov 1981 Of course we didn’t mind, we enjoyed them being there. That’s the kind of friends that every parent wishes their children had. David was just a great kid from a great family, and now, when they come back to visit, they always call or come by and say hello.” Bill said that he is “absolutely elated” over David’s success. “It just goes to show that, no matter who you are, or how small the town you come from, you can always set your sights on whatever it is that you want to do and go for it,” he said. Today, David’s childhood friend, William, is himself a Rogersville-based lawyer, having followed in the footsteps of his dad and uncle James Phillips, and David’s brother, Carter, is likewise an attorney, with an office in Mobile, Alabama.
Listening, learning and showing respect
At every job he held, David said, he learned the importance of listening and learning from the experience of others, and of showing respect. “My dad always said, God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason,” he said. Even as a child in the small town of Rogersville, David knew that his horizons were “out there, somewhere”. “I loved Rogersville, but I always had an interest in international stuff, and when I was in high school, I had the opportunity to go abroad for a summer,” he said. “After that, I was bitten by the ‘international bug’ and tied to make sure that, every chance I got, I travelled.” He attended Tennessee Tech for a year, then worked in South Carolina and later enrolled at Georgia Tech. “But I always came back to Rogersville because that’s where my parents were until my dad retired.” At that point, he still had not settled on what direction his career path would take, but was inspired from his growing-up years in Rogersville to become entrepreneurial and creative. “In small towns, you learn that in order to get ahead, you have
11
to be resourceful and responsible, and to take every opportunity to learn, no matter what the topic may be,” he said. “I drew from those experiences there as a kid,” he said. “I began taking foreign language classes and changed my co-op program in college so that I could go overseas whenever possible.” After graduating, David got married to his college sweetheart, Florence, from France, and they moved to Switzerland, then Germany and two daughters later, to France, the U.S. and then back to France three years ago, where his wife is a professional coach, his oldest daughter Mary is a school teacher, and his youngest daughter Lauren attends university.” His career has led him from the Boston Consulting Group, and then GE Healthcare, prior to accepting a position as Guerbet’s Chief Commercial Officer in February, 2018, at the company’s world headquarters near Paris.
Teachers at Rogersville City School
Some of the biggest influences on his life, other than family and friends, he said, were the teachers at Rogersville City School. “There was one, Joyce Sanders, who showed me that she had confidence in me,” he said. “By giving you confidence, teachers make you realize what you can accomplish. She was one of those teachers who didn’t try to force things down your throat. She just figured out what each of us did well and encouraged us to stretch ourselves to do better. She was always supportive and reinforcing the positive.” David’s teacher — now Joyce Manuel — remembered her former student as “exemplary” and “always smiling”. “I’m not surprised that he is the CEO of that company,” Joyce told the Review. “He was always a leader at school.” “What I remember the most about David is his big, warm smile,” she recalled. “He was the most positive student, very intelligent, and kind, very kind, to everybody. He was just an easy student, such a joy to be around and teach, and with the willingness to help anybody.” Joyce was thrilled to learn of David’s success in the business world.
“I have had an absolutely incredible journey and I’m looking forward to whatever the future holds. I’ve been all over the world but I never forget where I came from, Rogersville and the people there will always be special to me. Always.” — David Hale —
“If there ever was a child who had ‘success’ written all over his future, that was David,” she said. After his father retired, the family moved to Kingsport, where his parents make their home today. And even though he today is the CEO of an international firm Continued on page 12

whose medical reach touches a life, literally, every second — 86,400 times a day — David says he will always cherish the memories and experiences of growing up “in one of the best small towns anywhere”. “I have had an absolutely incredible journey and I’m looking forward to whatever the future holds,” he added. “I’ve been all over the world but I never forget where I came from, Rogersville and the people there will always be special to me. About Guerbet
According to the company’s website, Guerbet began with Marcel Guerbet’s discovery of the first iodinated organic contrast medium in 1901. The company was founded 25 years later, in 1926, by André Guerbet. Since then, it has expanded significantly, thanks to the discovery of innovations that have left their mark on medical imaging technologies and the contrast media associated with them. Guerbet recently also launched a strategic initiative to develop a new business based on digital technologies and artificial intelligence with two objectives: first, to improve the productivity of radiologists, e.g. with diagnostic assistance tools, and second, to obtain a tumor tissue characterization through imaging to better guide treatments.

Dragging Canoe
The man who changed Rogersville’s history There is a small cemetery in Crockett Springs Park near downtown Rogersville. Among those buried here are Joseph and Mary Amis Rogers, from whom the town got its name. There is also a small tombstone with a plaque from the “Division of History State of Tennessee” which reads “Here Lie David Crockett and his wife, Grandparents of Davy Crockett who were massacred near this spot by Indians in 1777.”
Who was David Crockett?
It is known that David and Elizabeth Crockett moved their family to the Washington District of North Carolina, which is now the northeastern tip of east Tennessee in 1776. This is today the location of Rogersville. Little specific information on the attack is known, but history says the attack on Crockett’s family was led by Dragging Canoe, a “ChickamaugaCherokee” chief and warrior. In April 1777, Dragging Canoe led several attacks on settlers on the Holston, Doe, Watauga and Nolichucky Rivers. David Crockett was about 48 years old when he was killed in the attack. Elizabeth was also killed, and two of their sons, Joseph and James, were captured and held as prisoners for 17 years. An older son, John, was not living with his parents during the attack. He married and had nine children, the fifth of which was the legendary Davy Crockett.
Tsiyugunsini
Tsiyugunsini was born in 1738. He earned his name at a young age when he wanted to go to war. To prove his readiness he was told he must be able to carry a canoe to the water. Due to his youth, the best he could manage was to drag the canoe, so he became “Tsiyugunsini” which means, “He is dragging his canoe”. To the white men he was known as Dragging Canoe. It is known that he contracted smallpox as a child, which left marks on his face.
He first became a warrior fighting other Indian tribes, the Shawnee and Muskogee. He first fought against settlers in the Anglo-Cherokee War (1759-1761). Dragging Canoe became one of the most vocal opponents of encroachment by settlers into Indian lands. He was among the many Indians who fought alongside the British in the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Dragging Canoe was the leader of a series of conflicts known as the Chickamauga wars, He became the pre-eminent war leader among the Indian of the Southeast of his time. He served as principal chief of the Chickamauga, or Lower Cherokee from 1777 until his death in 1792. Dragging Canoe waged war on settlements in Georgia, Virginia and the Carolinas for 17 years, and became known as a feared warrior and leader.
Impact on Rogersville’s history
After the Crocketts were killed, the remaining family members sold the Crockett land to Thomas Amis. Amis’ daughter, Mary, married Joseph Rogers. Thomas Amis was one of the area’s most prominent citizens, and Rogers would become the founder of the town of Rogersville. He built and operated a tavern near the spot where the Crocketts are buried. If Dragging Canoe had not attacked the Crocketts, would they have stayed here and been leaders of the settlement? Would Davy Crockett have perhaps have had a bigger role in Rogersville’s history? If not for the incident in 1777, could we be living in Crockettville? Food for thought!

Benjamin Hawkins E
Hawkins County’s namesake
ven the most casual student of local history knows something about Joseph Rogers, for whom the town of Rogersville is named. But what about our county? Many people know nothing about Benjamin Hawkins. If he was important enough that our forefathers named our county in his honor, he deserves some attention, too.
Early life
Benjamin Hawkins was born on August 7, 1754 to Philemon and Delia (Martin) Hawkins in Granville County (now Warren County) North Carolina. He was the third of four sons. His was a family of wealthy planters and Benjamin enjoyed a privileged childhood. He left his home to attend The College of New Jersey which later became Princeton. He excelled in language studies, but his education was interrupted by the Revolutionary War.
Military Career
Hawkins was commissioned as a colonel and served on George Washington’s staff as his main interpreter of French. continued on page 27

After serving in this capacity for several years, Hawkins was released from federal service in 1777.
Political Career
Hawkins returned home to North Carolina and was elected to the state house of representatives, where he served in 1778, 1779, and 1784. The North Carolina General Assembly sent him as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1781, 1783, 1787. In 1789 he was a delegate to the Fayetteville Convention, which ratified the constitution. He was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served from 1789-1795.
United States Indian Agent
In 1785 Hawkins was a congressional representative for negotiating land deals and treaties with the Creek Indians in the southeast. He was usually successful in the dealings with the Creeks and was accepted by the tribe as a trustworthy friend. He worked through some very intense years with the Creeks. In 1796, Hawkins was appointed as General Superintendent of Indian Affairs by George Washington. He was still the principal

Indian agent to the Creeks, but was also responsible for dealing with the “tribes south of the Ohio River”, which also included Choctaws, Cherokees, and Chickasaws. He served in this position until 1818.
His life in Georgia
Hawkins had taken a common-law wife, Lavinia Downs, and they had seven children together. Many historians say that she was a Creek Indian. She had property on the Flint River near Roberta, Georgia and the family built a plantation there. He used the farm to teach Indians to farm in the European tradition, planting crops and raising animals for food. He worked hard to preserve the peace between the Indians and settlers, but some Creeks resented their lifestyle being changed. They formed the “Red Sticks” made war against the United States in 1813-1814. Hawkins organized the “friendly” Creeks into a fighting force to aid the Tennessee and Georgia militias to battle the Redsticks. The fighting ended when Andrew Jackson’s troops defeated the Redsticks at Horseshoe Bend in Alabama.
Later Life
Hawkins reportedly tried to resign his position and return from the Georgia frontier but was not allowed to because his service was so valuable. The tribes he worked with called him “The Beloved Man of the Four Nations”. He married Lavinia so that their children would be accepted in both the Indian world and polite society. Hawkins died suddenly on June 16, 1816 and is buried in Roberta, Georgia.
Legacy
Fort Benjamin Hawkins was built in Georgia and the archaeological site is now on the National Registry of Historical Sites The Benjamin Hawkins Boy Scout Camp is in Byron, Georgia. Hawkinsville, Georgia is named in his honor. And of course, Hawkins County, North Carolina was named in Benjamin Hawkins’ honor, and became Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1796.

in the department’s history. The department flourished under the direction of Carpenter with a record number of 25 members. Over the course of his 36 years of service, Chief Carpenter helped build one of the best volunteer fire fighting teams in East Tennessee. Not only did he dedicate many years as a firefighter, he was also a member of many other organizations to be of service to others. Discover Hawkins County asked a few past/present firefighters how they would describe Chief Carpenter: Bobby Bean -- “Murlice was a good chief that always listened to our problems and helped work them out.” Chief Shane Suthers -- “I never knew him as the chief but if I’m even half the fire chief, and friend that people say he was, I’d say that I have done a pretty good job.” Jason Byington -- “There are no words to describe the respect I have for that man.” Others used words to describe him were: the best, very good man, and friend. On January 3, 2020, Surgoinsville lost this legendary public servant. He is missed by many across Hawkins County and beyond. The fire department was once responsible for much of the town’s entertainment throughout the years. For many years, the

People from all across the area would attend and to many, it was an eagerly awaited event each year. The event gave the residents of the small town a chance to come together for food, fun, and fellowship while supporting the fire department. Unfortunately, the fire department is no longer allowed to host fundraising events due to changes in municipal codes. The department is now primarily funded by the Town of Surgoinsville and Hawkins County. Shane Suthers currently heads the department with 16 years under his belt and over four years as chief. Chief Suthers along with Assistant Chief Denny Steele and the other 12 firefighters continue to assist the community to the best of their ability. Although the fire department is part of the Town of Surgoinsville, all positions remain volunteer. In recent years the department has worked diligently to drop the town’s ISO rating two points which in turn lowers residential homeowner insurance by up to 30%. Surgoinsville firefighters are on the scene of an emergency an average of 40 - 50 times a year, however, the majority are to assist in automobile accidents. Actual structural or home fires only make up about 5% of the overall call-outs each year. The original fire hall on the corner of Church and Hendricks Streets continues to be utilized as one of two fire stations owned by the department. Station 2 is located on Hwy. 11W. The department utilizes two fire engines, a mini-pumper, and one support vehicle. They also own a vintage, 1942 model fire truck that is used to bring Santa down the streets of town and, on occasion, is used to honor former firefighters as transportation to their final resting place. “The department’s short term goal is to replace a very aged fire apparatus, 1977, to be exact,” Chief Suthers said. “As for our long term goals, we would like to see the department continue to evolve to meet the emergency needs of our community. We are always looking for volunteers to join our team. We have something for almost everyone to do. All that is required is to be 18 years old and be able to pass a physical and background check. Training will follow once one becomes a member.” In addition to fighting fire and assisting in automobile wrecks the volunteers participate in training, flow hydrants, and maintain department property and equipment. They are also involved in

community events including parades, festivals, back to school bashes, and more. They even assist in clean-up efforts throughout the town. If you see any of these firefighters or your local firefighters around town, take a minute to thank them for all they do for your community. Of One Accord Ministry
Christmas for the Children Christmas for the Children has served 1,082 children this year (2019) through 32 different parties, 17 of which were hosted by local churches. Jennifer Kinsler, CFTC director, gives her thanks to the many local churches, mission groups and businesses that sponsor names and provide a party for these families to make Christmas a joyous time for all families in our county. Christmas for the Children is one of the first programs launched by Of One Accord Ministry when it was founded 32 years ago. Kinsler, who works from October through December taking applications and then finding churches to help provide sponsorship of programs, feels relieved as Christmas parties finalize and the children are served. The original purpose of CFTC was to insure that every child in the county received a good Christmas without duplicating efforts. Part of Kinsler’s responsibility is to check with other groups to help insure only one serves each family. Kinsler also relayed that the Georgia Baptist Association’s Appalachia Ministry delivered more Christmas backpacks which
were passed on to children, increasing her numbers by the end of the year. She stated that while the program is about gifts and children, through the many church parties, 78 people received Christ in 2019 alone. Kinsler gives a special thanks to the Angel Tree Foundation which provided a cash gift and Americans Helping Americans which provided shoes, winter coats, and blankets, and to the Pajama Ministry and WCQR that provided more than 1,000 pair of pajamas. Special thanks, too, go to the Carrollton Baptist Association which provided 1,120 backpacks valued at $75 each. A host of local groups provided gifts or donations also. Serving 1,100 children with gifts and clothing valued at $75 each amounts to nearly $80,000 and could only be done through the involvement and support of our entire community.

ourteen years ago amidst the formation of The Local Artists Gallery in Rogersville, Tata Andres and Bobby Merrithew became acquainted. Both are artists with many different artistic talents. Through their love of horses, gardening, and respect for each other’s artwork, the pair turned their acquaintanceship into a long-term commitment. Now, they raise dahlias and zinnias together while enjoying the beautiful outdoors surrounding their home in Eidson, Tennessee. Born in Linz, Austria and raised an “army brat,” Tata spent her childhood traveling and called many different army bases home. As a young child, Tata developed a love of horses, and she turned that love into a passion for drawing and painting. She continued developing her skills as she studied art both in high school and while she attended the University of New Orleans. She sold her first watercolor painting at the young age of 18. Her talents don’t stop with drawing and painting; she is a published poet, gardener, photographer, massage therapist, and classical singer.
“I love singing classical music acapella and have been joined in song by the roaming coyote packs many times!” she jokingly said. Included in her many achievements are painting background scenery for various operas and creating variety shows. This kept her busy while attending college at the University of New Orleans. After college, Tata moved to Jamaica for two years to explore the tropical island while painting its exquisite scenery. She also worked as a massage therapist at one of the resorts on the island and painted signs for many local businesses. Upon her return to the States, she furthered her education at the Florida School of Massage. After graduating in 1985, she worked at numerous upscale resorts in Naples, FL. She even had professional golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez as a regular client. In 1989, she moved to the awe-inspiring mountains of East Tennessee and made her forever home in Edison. Tata has continued her work as a certified massage therapist for over 35 years. She specializes in tension headaches and pain relief to improve quality of life.

the nature of
with Tata Andres and Bobby Merrithew Ten years ago, Tata and three other experienced professional therapists joined together at the historic Kyle House Reflexology and Massage Therapy in Rogersville. Tata said, “The elegant Kyle House provides a lovely place for us to work and to help people from all walks of life.” Tata’s artistic partner in life, Bobby, was born and raised in a small town in southern Maine. At the age of 22, Bobby was offered an amazing, life-changing opportunity to become a part of an experiment in alternative living. Several people purchased 160 acres on the backside of a small mountain. Their intentions were to build and live in homes with no electricity or power tools. While building their homes, they only used materials that could be found on their individual parcels of land or recycled materials. Bobby learned how to live off of the land and how to use a foot adze (a long handled cutting tool), an ax, and repurposed nails. Building his cabin and its landscaping began Bobby’s love of laying stone.
“As I dug up and piled rocks around my cabin for a garden, I became hooked on building with stone, and I am proud to say I am a lifelong mason,” he said. “After six years of living and growing up in that setting, I learned so many alternative ways of building and being. For me, I had gone through a very intensive period of my life that I would live for the rest of my life. Those years were like my own personal college, and I wouldn’t trade it for any degrees from any institution.” In the late 70’s, Bobby moved to Sneedville with only the knowledge that he gained the six years prior building his cabin and living off of the surrounding land. Although he values the use of hand tools, he quickly learned how to use power tools to help get his jobs done. Bobby spent the next 30+ years as a stonemason, and he built some of the most outstanding works of art. He constructed many fireplaces and chimneys in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes of stone. In addition to his stonework, Bobby built several homes including the cabin he and Tata call home today. Not only did he build their cabin, he designed it, cut down the trees, and milled them into boards and beams. “Tata and I live on the edge of the Clinch Mountain range, one of the longest continuous mountain top ranges in the world, right here in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee,” he said. In his late 40’s, he began to discover wood carving as an art. Reminiscing, Bobby said, “It seemed like a natural extension of all of the home building and carpentry projects I have done. But with the carving, I found that I could express myself in a really personal way. All of the wood I carve was found in my own woods. It’s a really inner, personal thing for me to take a piece of dead wood from my own land and carve it into a beautiful piece of art.” Bobby didn’t stop there; he took an immense interest in stained glass. As he was adding an extension to his kitchen, he pictured a beautiful stained glass piece of art embedded into the gable above the sink. He said that he could not afford to pay someone else continued on page 53

for what he wanted, so he set his mind to it and made his own masterpiece. “The process became extremely addictive: cutting, soldering, and creating stained glass art. Right away, I felt like it was just like laying stone, which I really love doing, but glass comes in so many colors. Now, I was hooked on creating things with lots of colorful glass designs. It affected me in a profound way. We all know the benefits of color therapy: from the beautiful stained glass in cathedrals around the world that help feed our souls to the painted colored walls in hospitals that create a calming and healing

atmosphere for patients.” Tata and Bobby are continuing to grow and explore various forms of art and are finding new ways to express the joy of life. They are also in the process of building a gallery and learning center on their farm. The couple plan to sell their art while utilizing their 30+ years of knowledge to educate others in the world of art. ALL ABOUT
DESIGN CAKES O
n a cool, crisp morning in March 2010, Lori Smith carefully mixed together the ingredients, separated out the batter, and created her first masterpiece as the owner of All About Design Cakes. Prior to going into business, Lori weighed out the pros and cons of giving up a steady paycheck to pursue her passion. She really wanted to be able to free up her time with an at-home cake baking and designing business so that she could be a stay-at-home mom while continuing to contribute to her family’s finances. Lori has always been very work driven and a little of a perfectionist. “My husband describes me as a workaholic, and I guess I do go
a little overboard at times,” she said. “Going into business for myself was a scary decision especially as my son, Joshua, was getting ready to graduate high school and needing money for college.” One day, as Lori and Joshua were standing in their kitchen discussing her worries about starting a business, Joshua looked at his mom and asked, “What have you always told me? You can’t do anything if you don’t try.” He continued, “Don’t let me be the reason you don’t.” Joshua’s words hit home with Lori. She recalled, “After he said those things, my final thought on the subject was, ‘Ok, Lori, you continued on page 65

can do this, and you need to show him that you can.’” After many years working with the public and advancing into management and quality control, Lori decided to take a leap of faith, quit working for the “man,” and jump into business ownership full force. It did not take long for All About Design Cakes to take off and build a large clientele. This gave Lori hope that her dream would be successful, and she never looked back. Completely self-taught, Lori specializes in beautifullydecorated, delicious cakes for all occasions, including: weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and more. Lori’s husband, Greg, has been a constant source of support and help in the homebased business. He even helps her decorate cakes and does most of the deliveries. Customers have described Lori’s cakes as amazing, greattasting, gorgeous, perfect, and more. Here’s what some have had to say about their experience ordering Lori’s designs: “I have lost count of how many cakes Lori has created for us for special occasions. And every time, I’m still amazed at how
beautiful the cake turns out, and they are always as yummy as they look! We always receive so many compliments on the look and taste of the cakes!” “The cake was absolutely heaven!! We had two cakes and cupcakes for our wedding reception, and my goodness .. it was amazing! They looked beautiful, and we can’t thank her enough!” “Lori has never disappointed me with her designs, tastes, and reasonable prices! Each cake I get from her is always better than the last! She has been making cakes for me for years!! Love her!” Lori wants to thank her family for the sacrifices they make for her to succeed and for all of their support. “I love them so much!” she said. “I also want to thank my customers for making my dream a success. So many of my regular customers have become my friends, and I am very blessed.” If a unique, fun, and beautifully-designed cake is in your future, give Lori a call at 423-231-7209 or email her at allaboutdesigncakes@ yahoo.com and let her masterpiece be the talk of your event.

A country boy at heart and proud Hancock County native
BLUEGRASS LEGEND
Doyle Lawson
B
luegrass and gospel music legend Doyle Lawson began his spectacular career as a lad in Hancock County. His love of music began by listening to his father’s gospel quartet. “Old-fashioned and spirit-filled (just like it should be), gospel music was and will always be my first love,” Doyle told Discover Hancock County magazine. Doyle wanted to try his hand at playing an instrument, and one of his father’s quartet members, Willis Byrd, had just the instrument: a mandolin. Doyle asked his father to borrow it from Mr. Byrd so that he could try and play it. Mr. Byrd agreed, and at the young age of 11, Doyle picked up his first mandolin and taught himself how to play. “I kept that mandolin for a long, long time until I was able to buy one of my own,” he recalled. In later years, Jimmy Martin, another famous bluegrass musician from Sneedville, was home visiting family for Christmas. At age 14, Doyle got the opportunity to meet Martin, but little did he know that he was meeting the person who would begin developing his professional bluegrass career. Doyle left Hancock County when he was 18 and moved to Morristown to work in a furniture factory for seven short months. “On Friday, January 31, 1963, they let me go because they said it was clear to them that I liked to sing and pick more than I liked to work,” he laughed. “In just a few days, Monday, February 3rd, to be exact, Jimmy Martin offered me a spot with his band playing the banjo. That was when my professional career began. Jimmy gave me pointers on how to execute my rhythm in the proper way and gave me a leg-up on my musical career. I played the banjo with him until early 1967.”
Doyle was living in Louisville, Kentucky when he left Martin’s band. Banjo player and bluegrass bandleader, J.D. Crowe, lived nearby in Lexington. Doyle decided to visit Crowe and the two instantly became friends. Shortly thereafter, Doyle joined Crowe’s band as a guitar player. Later, the band needed a mandolin player, and Doyle eagerly put down his guitar and traded roles. The mandolin became his primary instrument at that moment and continues to be his instrument of choice today. continued on page 70

In 1971, Doyle moved to Washington, DC where he joined The Country Gentlemen. After five or six years, he was done with big-city living, so he moved back to the country. “I’m a small-town country boy at heart,” he admitted. Doyle married his wife of nearly 42-years, Suzanne, in June of 1978. Doyle had a son, Robert, by his first marriage, and the couple later had two daughters, Suzi and Kristi. Doyle is proud of all of his children and gives Suzanne credit for doing a great job raising their daughters while he was on tour. All three children are musically talented. “Robert can tear up a guitar, and both girls play the piano,” he said. “Robert didn’t want to play bluegrass; he wanted to play rock ‘n roll. I always encouraged my children to play what they wanted to play, but I had one requirement, which was to play the best they could. When Robert was a teen, he traveled with me selling our merchandise. Once, he filled in for our baritone singer for two weeks. It’s 30 years later, and people still remember him singing and tell me what a great job he did.” In 1979, Doyle started his own band: Quicksilver. The band is still going strong 41 years later with nearly 100 performances per year. Many bands go through hundreds of members over the years, but less than 40 band members have made their way through Summertime in Hancock County! Doyle is in the middle. The boy Quicksilver. “I told people I wanted to have as many people run through on the left is Loda Ward, Doyle’s best buddy growing up. The boy on the right is Doyle’s brother, Les Lawson. my band as Bill Monroe,” he joked. “Then I realized he had about

During his performance, Willis Byrd came up on stage to present Doyle with the same mandolin that he had loaned him as a child. It was the first one that Doyle ever played. He had a friend restore the mandolin, and now, it looks great and is fully playable. Today, that mandolin hangs on the wall in the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame. The Mayor of Sneedville presented Doyle Lawson with a “Key to the City” in 1979. Over the course of Doyle’s career, he has met and played with many of the greats, such as: Jimmy Martin, J.D. Crowe, Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, and many more. Surprisingly, he said that he has never met Dolly Parton, but he heard her sing on Cas Walker’s television show when she was only nine years old. “I have always been a fan of Dolly Parton. She could sing like an angel when she was a little girl, and she still can,” he said. When asked to reflect on Bill Monroe, Doyle’s first response
was a solemn, “He was my hero”. “I was so honored to get to know him,” he continued. “I knew him for 30 years or so and was just so honored to get to know him like that. Occasionally throughout the years, I would take my guitar up on stage and sing lead with Bill. I would sing some songs he hadn’t heard in years, and he liked that ... he liked a challenge.” Doyle laughed as he said, “I told Bill one time that whatever happened to me in music, good or bad, was his fault”. Doyle has received an abundance of awards and honors throughout his amazing career. In 2006, he was the recipient of the United States’ highest honor in folk and traditional arts: the National Heritage Fellowship Award. He also became an inductee to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2012. Although he stays very busy, Doyle returns to Hancock County on occasion to visit his parents’ graves on Chestnut Ridge. While there, he reminisces about his wonderful parents, his childhood, and the mountains where his musical career began.
