Otis Eldridge in the Studebaker Diner at Memory Lane

OTIS ELDRIDGE BUSINESSMAN • COLLECTOR • CAR GUY Otis Eldridge is a well known Rogersville businessman; owner of Eldridge Auto Sales and body shop, as well as interest in real estate. He is one of the Rogersville area’s leading citizens. He’s also known as an avid car collector with many rare vehicles. Many people know Otis as the creator of “Memory Lane”, a 1950s-60s village that sits behind his home and business on Caney Creek Road.

“Now I’ve got a few extra cars”

Otis remembers his friend Sonee Hall taking him to auto Otis’ Corvettes auctions and swap meets. Otis says that Hall taught him to buy the right cars; hemi Cudas, wing cars, Boss Mustangs, ’57 Chevy convertibles. Otis says “Finding cars worth doing, it was fun to buy the right car.” It was fun to find the missing pieces, Otis remembers his brother telling him “You work on cars Monday through Friday and then work on your classics all weekend.” Otis “likes them all, Chevy, Ford and Chrysler”, but in the late 1980s he was looking for hemis, and bought a Superbird, a Hemi Cuda and a Hemi Roadrunner. He remembers at an auction in Alcoa in 1989, a “Bowtie” friend (a Chevy enthusiast) told him that he knew where “one of those cars with a closeline on the back” was. He was referring to a Plymouth Superbird, located in Maryville. Continued on page 20

He added “It’s been so much fun ... getting the cars.”

The General Store

Memory Lane

Memory Lane wasn’t a planned project, it just happened. In the mid 1990s, Otis’ business interests were taking less of his time. He heard that Robinette’s Grocery in Lee County was selling out and closing. This was the store where Otis’ parents shopped every Saturday for years. Otis wanted to preserve a bit of history from his childhood; he wanted to acquire the store’s coffee mill. He did get the coffee mill, along with two truckloads of 1950s items from the store’s stock. To have a place to display these items, Otis built his country store, patterned after the store in a Coca-Cola poster. There weren’t enough items to fill the store, so Otis spent the next five years “buying stuff to fill it.” Continued on page 21

The Rogersville Heritage Association had been displaying a railroad caboose next to the depot in Rogersville. The caboose suffered a fire and Otis wound up with it displayed near the store. He had the idea to turn it into a sweet shop and was working on it when a friend told him about a diner in Marion, Virginia that was available. It was a 1942 model diner and spent 1942-1962 in New Jersey before being moved to Marion. Otis bought it and moved it to his property in 2002.

The General Store is stocked with authentic merchandise.

It was that year that he had his first “car get-together”, he expected around 30 participants but over 160 showed up. The next building added to Memory Lane was the Lunstrom house. Lunstrom was the first company to manufacture prefab houses. This house was on McKinney Avenue in Rogersville and was going to be demolished. It is a 1949 model. Otis says that the company only lasted three years before going bankrupt. Only 2,300 Lunstrom homes were built. Continued on page 23

Around the same time the Ford sign came to Memory Lane from Testerman Ford in Rogersville. Otis built a simulated Ford dealership to go with it. The Texaco station is a true 1950s icon. Otis moved it here from Saltville, Virginia. Daisy Smith donated the Lance Motel sign to Memory Lane. In 2004 Otis bought the land across the Creek from his property and added the covered bridge. About that same time Otis bought an airplane from Amanda McPeek, The 1948 Luscomb High Wing plane was flown by Amanda’s husband, Ralph McPeek. She sold it The Texaco station to Otis on the condition that nothing about the airplane would be changed. Also in 2004, two important new structures were added. The church features pews from the chapel at Pressmen’s Home. Otis points out that true church services have been held in the church and that there have been baptizings in the creek behind the church. continued on page 24

The house next to the church was constructed about the same time. It is modeled after the house where Otis was born, which belonged to Otis’ uncle. The furnishings in the house include items belonging to Otis’ parents and grandparents. Otis “weeded out all non-vintage cars” and continued to build Memory Lane. Over the years he added a bowling alley with two duck pin lanes, a pool hall, fire department, sheriff’s department, radio and TV repair shop, body shop, doctors office, and dentist office. At one time Otis says he wanted to use car names in Memory Lane, such as the Studebaker Diner. The “Rocket 88” motel sign was changed from its original Skelton’s Motel artwork. The work on creating Memory Lane began in earnest in 1999. Otis says that there was never any intention of turning it into a

business. He says that many items have been donated because Memory Lane isn’t a business. The Memorial Day weekend car shows became a huge hit. In the first year there were about 160 cars, 375 the next, 400+ by year 4 and by 2012 there were over 1000 cars. There were cars from 19 states,

including California, Texas, Florida, NewYork and Pennsylvania. Some highlights from the car shows were vintage movies shown at the “drive-in” and appearances by impersonators of Elvis, Patsy Cline, Aunt Bea, Otis Campbell and Barney Fife. The show just became too big and hasn’t been held in several years. Although Otis never had any thoughts about Memory Lane being a business, he is happy that it has been great for local charities. Local fire departments, the Boys & Girls Club and the American Cancer Society have all benefited from Memory Lane events, especially the car shows. Although Otis has never promoted Memory Lane, the word about it seems to have gotten out. It has been featured on several television shows including Weird Backyards, Tennessee

The 2014 Memory Lane Car Show

Crossroads, Crook and Chase and Crossroads of America. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver filmed a music video there. Otis says there has been one movie filmed at Memory Lane and commercials have been filmed in the Studebaker Diner. Memory Lane may not be quite finished…. Otis says “I’m going to build a saloon.” A visit to Memory Lane and the car collection can be overwhelming. It takes dedication and passion to build a collection. If Otis is there a visitor will soon learn that the story behind each item is as important as the artifact itself. Memory Lane is truly a unique place. Otis says “We’ve worked hard and hustled. God has blessed us.’”

The church was built around 1875 on property donated by Andrew Galbraith. There may have been a log church building

on this property before the current building was constructed. The oldest grave in the church cemetery is dated 1810. Originally, Methodist and Presbyterian congregation shared the building. The Methodists had services on Sunday Mornings and the Presbyterians held services one afternoon each month. Continued on page 30

Andrew Galbraith

Andrew Galbraith was a prominent early settler in the area. He was born on April 10, 1776 in Washington County, Virginia. At the age of three he came to this area with his father. It is thought that Andrew Galbraith’s homestead was near the location if the present church building. His homestead was described as being “in western Hawkins County on the east side of Short Mountain along the Holston River.” His vast holdings would in time include farmland, a mineral springs resort, a school, a marble quarry and of course, the Methodist church. He was married twice; he had six children with his first wife, Elizabeth Laughlin. She died in 1810 and her grave is the oldest in the church cemetery. In 1811 Galbraith married Sarah Anderson and they had eight children. Sarah passed in 1849. Andrew died on November 22, 1860. His farm was referred to as “Tater Hill”. Over the years the area was known as Galbraith’s Springs, Quarryville and Lakeview. Marble from the quarry was used in construction of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Church History

There was probably a log church located near where the present Lakeview Missionary Baptist Church stands today. The current white church building was built in 1875 and was called Galbraith Methodist Church. In 1876 it came to be called “The Methodist Episcopal Church at Quarryville.” In 1940 when TVA formed Cherokee Lake from the nearby Holston River, the church deeded as Galbraith Methodist Church. In 1971, the property passed from the Morristown District United Methodist Church to the Mooresburg Recreation Center, Inc. It then passed one final time to “Lakeview Baptist Church in 1987.

H

awkins County native Ashlyn Gordon was only a little girl around the age of six when she began to realize her artistic ability. Like many of us did in school, Ashlyn doodled on her paper almost every day in class. Eventually, her classmates began to notice her talent as her doodles turned into impressive drawings. Ashlyn said, “By the time I was in the 4th grade, I was absorbing everything I could in art class. The time would pass by too fast, and I just wanted to stay in art class all day.” By the age of fourteen, Ashlyn was painting with acrylics on canvas. Her high school art teacher, Mrs. Bowman, really helped her build her confidence and had Ashlyn painting murals all over the school. Ashlyn’s family was also a great influence on her creativity. Growing up with a creative mother, Ashlyn always found craft and painting supplies in the house to experiment with as a child.

“My dad helped me tap into my patience spending time out fishing together. Patience is a huge part of creating and there is always something new to learn.” — Ashlyn Gordon

She said, “My mom, Cheryl, influenced me to try a little bit of everything in the creative world and showed me that my talent could be applied in many different ways. My sister, Jaclyn, inherited the creative gene from our mom. She is really talented at creating jewelry.” In addition to art, Ashlyn has always had a deep love for animals. “My dad, Larry, helped instill my love for animals.” As a child, she would check out books about animals from the library and study the pictures so that she could draw them. Ashlyn’s husband, Barrett, is also an artist, but with his job, he doesn’t have much time to pursue his talent. However, he is quick to jump in and help Ashlyn whenever he can. “He has the ability to draw people, and that is one area I am lacking. He is always ready and willing to help when I bite off more than I can chew. I am grateful to have someone who is so supportive and helpful. Also, Continued on page 38

she made her first commissioned house-portrait sale. Since that first sale, she has painted hundreds of homes from all over the US. Ashlyn recalled, “One of the first homes I was commissioned to paint was a home that was completely lost to a fire. The family wanted a keepsake to hang in their new home that was being rebuilt. I was heartbroken for them. I knew I was on the right track. I felt like I was finally discovering a real purpose for my art.” Ashlyn has also painted several Hawkins County historical landmarks over the years. One such painting was her interpretation of what the infamous Amis Mill may have looked like in the late 1800’s. It features the Amis home and the nearby dam. She has also painted a tiny 2x2 inch magnet series of historic downtown Rogersville that features the courthouse, the train station, and other beautiful buildings. (The magnet series is an ongoing project for

my sister is my go-to honest critic. She can reel me back in when I get a little too far off track on a project.” The Gordons have two teenagers, Cole and Hannah, who also carry the creative gene. Both can draw; however, they have multiple other skills as well. Hannah is a makeup artist while Cole is a selftaught guitarist and bass player. Just a few years ago, Ashlyn discovered the world of painting with watercolors. She began by purchasing a cheap package of watercolors and watercolor paper. Then, she did a tremendous amount of online research and watched numerous YouTube tutorials until she learned how to use them. Once she learned, she decided to paint a few family members’ homes as gifts. Ashlyn said, “It was a chance for me to give them something uniquely theirs.” In just a few months, she posted a listing on Etsy, and in no time,

“I received one of Ashlyn’s art pieces as a gift from my daughter. It was of our old Lab named Max. Ashlyn captured his personality perfectly. The painting looked as if Max was jumping off the page smiling at us. Even though it was only his face, I could imagine his tail wagging. Her artwork is beautiful and very realistic! We will cherish our painting always.” — Patty Sumner “Ashlyn painted two pictures for me of the cars that my dad remodeled, and they were perfect. It’s something that I will treasure. Her paintings are wonderful, that it is amazing that she is self taught, and she was so great to work with.” — Kitty Earl “Ashlyn is wonderful to work with. I am able to give her my vision, whether it be a house portrait for a client or a beloved furry friend, and she is able to make my vision come to life and so much more. Each time I have worked with her, she has completely blown my expectations out of the water. Ashlyn.) The former Blue Springs House that sat just off of Main Street in Rogersville and the Maxwell Academy in Surgoinsville have also been subjects of her paintings. “I’m passionate about making art that creates a connection. For a long time, I searched for my niche, painting anything and everything, never really feeling that spark on any certain project. I always wondered exactly where I would find my place in the art world. Why was I given this talent, and how can I get it out into the world to serve others? Painting keepsakes is my way to serve others and feel that my art serves purpose in the world.” Ashlyn moved out of her comfort zone when she was approached to paint a large design for the football field at Cherokee High School. She said, “My initial reaction was that there was absolutely no way I could tackle something on such a large scale. After a few days of calculations, I had a game plan and went for it.” With the help of her family, Ashlyn created a painting of a spear that reached nearly 30 feet wide and 100 feet long. Later drone coverage of a football game was aired on television. Ashlyn told Discover Hawkins County that she would never have imagined that she would paint something so large that it could be seen from the sky. Today, Ashlyn’s primary focus is watercolor and gouache pet portraits. “The two mediums layer well together and help me create the textured appearance of fur. I also use acrylics occasionally if a client requests a painting on canvas or on some other object that watercolor won’t work on.” She continued, “I felt mediocre at many things until I discovered watercolors and eventually painting animal portraits. It was the first time I felt a really strong connection to my paintings. I guess the combination of creativity and love for animals all lead me to where I am now creating pet portraits.” Ashlyn practiced painting pet portraits using her own pets and friends’ pets as her first subjects. She uploaded her pet portraits to Instagram and received an overwhelming response. She also decided to paint a tribute to a local famous pup, Duke of Bush’s Baked Beans. Shortly after she posted a photograph of the painting, she was contacted by Bush’s to use the painting in their advertisements. Today, a photo with the painting of Duke can be found hanging in the background of Duke’s Instagram page, @ itsdukebush. Her love for animals is also a way for Ashlyn to give back to her community. She donates a portion of her proceeds from her pet portraits to the Hawkins County Animal Shelter. She also donates paintings to charitable events to help them raise funds and is always looking for ways to give back to the county she calls home. Ashlyn has shipped her masterpieces to more that 25 US states and as far away as Canada. Currently, she is so busy that she is taking bookings a month in advance. She also offers digital pictures of her paintings. This gives the buyer a way to print and use the picture in many different ways. BULL BABIES

Taking Southern Comfort Food to a Whole New Level Sisters Amanda and Mattie Wilmoth returned to their roots of Hawkins County after a decade of living separate lives in different parts of the country. Amanda, the older sister, spent her time away working in the trucking and transportation industry while Mattie worked in the hospitality and restaurant industry. After the pandemic hit the US, both girls lost their jobs and headed back home to begin the next chapter of their lives. Little did they know that their longtime dream of co-owning an eatery would be that next chapter. After being back in Hawkins County for a while, the space

that is now home to their eatery, Bull Babies, became available. Amanda recalls that Mattie called her on a whim and said, “Let’s just look at it.” So they met with a real estate agent, and from the moment they walked into the space, they fell in love with its potential and the opportunity to revisit their dream. Coming a long way from their childhood lemonade stand, the sisters are now living their dream of co-owning a casual eatery featuring high-end, Southern comfort food. Their dad gained the nickname Bull, but ironically, it was not from his farming heritage. Amanda and Mattie told Discover Hawkins County that their dad was somewhat of a local legend. Mattie said, “People only knew him by his nickname, Bull. Some say he got the name from his size, and others say it was because of his demeanor. Either way, once they met him, they never forgot him, and that is exactly how we want people to remember Bull Babies.” Being daddy’s girls, the name Bull Babies was a no-brainer that suited them perfectly. Even their logo is two baby bulls that depict each sister’s persona: sweet Mattie with the jewelry and savory Amanda with her infamous red banana. Together, Amanda and Mattie make quite a team. I mean, there are two of us!” Amanda and Mattie want to thank the Rogersville Chamber, Nancy Barker, the Historic Board, Rogersville Main Street Program, Heritage Association, and many other permitting boards in town for their help and support. The farm and the land that it is on is just amazing, and it was absolutely perfect for my wedding.” Samantha Gladson was also very happy with her experience. Samantha said, “Just wow! Conley Farms was the most perfect, beautiful place we could have imagined to begin our forever. The rolling hills, the peaceful creek, the gorgeous barn, and the lovely house and suite were all nice touches to our experience. It was so nice having all of the girls stay together in one home the night prior, and then also having somewhere for the boys to be boys before the wedding. After the wedding, being able to clean up and spend the first night of our lives together at the place where we were married was so nice.” Bride Heather Wells also had a positive experience, stating “We could not have asked for a better venue for our elopement! Everything was perfect and had gorgeous views!! You will not be disappointed with the Conleys; they make sure your day is special in every way!” Two photographers that had the honor of photographing

“Springtime on the farm is stunning with an apple orchard and many other trees showing off their colorful, delicate blooms.” Monica Conley

weddings at the farm also sing the praises of the venue. Photographer Justise Petty said, “I loved working with my brides who booked their wedding at Conley Farms. They have a little slice of heaven off the beaten path in Hawkins County that shows just how much charm we have in our little town! I look forward to shooting many more weddings at Conley Farms!” Megan and Nick Reid of K3 Photography TN said, “The Conleys are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! They have created a beautiful venue with breathtaking mountain views. You can tell they want to give each and every couple that celebrates with them an extraordinary experience! If you choose Conley Farms, you will not be disappointed!” Conley Farms at Big Creek and the Conley family have hosted more than 40 events with most of them being during the pandemic. to the pandemic. I believe the large outdoor space and the open air barn really made an impact on people choosing our venue for their weddings.” People from Virginia and Alabama with no ties to Hawkins County have chosen Conley Farms as their wedding venue. Monica said that she imagined the venue would mainly be used by area folks, but that hasn’t necessarily been the case. Weddings are the main focus of the venue, but other events, such as graduation parties, family reunions, and birthday parties, are always welcome. The guest house can also be rented when it isn’t wedding season. The event venue allows the Conley family to give back to their community not only by hosting charitable events but also by bringing people into the area. Richard said, “It brings business to the area and spreads revenue throughout the county. From filling hotels and restaurants to providing work for local caterers, florists, photographers, and more, it not only gives them jobs, but it also brings in tax revenue. In turn, our place is recommended to others. We all work together to help each other out.”

If you are looking for a venue like Conley Farms at Big Creek, check it out on Facebook and give Richard or Monica a call to set up a tour. Who knows? It may just be the wedding venue that you have dreamed about since you were a little kid, or it may be the perfect, peaceful gathering place for your event.
