AN OVERVIEW

Hawkins County Rich History

Hawkins County is rich in local history heritage. Several locations to visit while in the area are listed below.

The Heritage Association of Rogersville and the Rogersville/Hawkins County Chamber of Commerce have a pamphlet available of a walking tour of Rogersville.

ROGERSVILLE

Historic Rogersville, is one of the state’s oldest towns, was founded in 1775 by Joseph Rogers and settled by the grandparents of Davy Crockett.

Whether you are a history buff or just enjoy the scenery, you are sure to be charmed by the architecture and brick side walks, lined with period lighting in the downtown district, which is on the National Register of Historic places.

Once a part of the famous Wilderness Road, Main Street is home to Federalstyle buildings surrounding the town square, and has remained virtually intact since 1789.

Rogersville flourished due to its location on an important stage road that connected Atlanta to Washington, DC, with routes to Kentucky and the Cumberland settlements. As a result several inns and taverns were built here, including Rogers Tavern, at 205 South Rogers Street (1786). One guest who stayed at the tavern was future President Andrew Jackson. Another Tavern that Jackson stayed at was McKinney’s Tavern, now named Hale Springs Inn.

Rogersville has had an illustrious history, reflected both in brilliant statesmen and businessmen and in its many productive industries. Today it reflects its gracious past in its homes and buildings and in the cordial manner of its citizens.

Hale Springs Inn

The inn was built in 1824 and was the

oldest continuously-operated inn in Tennessee. It is one of the contributing properties in the Rogersville Historic district.

John McKinney, a local lawyer and businessman, built the inn in 1824-25. He built it in order to compete with Rogers’ Tavern, which was operated by the founder of Rogersville, Joseph Rogers.

McKinney constructed a massive, three-story Federal style building that housed a tavern and guestrooms.

McKinney’s plan was to build a larger, brick inn directly on the road to compete with both of Rogers’ buildings. In 1823, he began construction on a massive, three-story, Federal style building that would house facilities for a true tavern bar, but also individual guest rooms on the different floors. The building also featured an impressive balcony over its door that would feature prominently later in its history. Noted guest to the inn during the 19th century were U.S. Presidents Andrew Johnson, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson.

During the American Civil War when the Union forces captured the town, they used the inn as their headquarters. Ironically when the Confederacy retook Rogersville during the battle of Big Creek in 1863, they used the Kyle House as their headquarters, which was across the street from the inn.

In 1988 the inn closed and was Tennessee’s oldest continuously operating inn. The Rogersville Heritage Association purchased the inn in 1998 and launched a renovation project which exceeded 2.1 million in 2009. https://www.halespringsinn.com/

Hale Springs Inn is located at 110 W. Main St. Crockett Spring Park

beth Hedge Crockett received a 281 acre land grant and built a log cabin near a large spring. It became known as Crockett Spring. It is now home to Crocket Spring Park and Arboretum. It is the centerpiece of the downtown Rogersville area. In September of 2013 the Certified Tennessee Arboretum was dedicated and features 36 varieties of trees. It is the perfect location for pictures, weddings, picnics or strolls. The park features a gazebo which can be rented for special occasions. Crocett Spring Park is located in the historic downtown area at 200 Crockett St.

Joseph Rogers Tavern

In 1786, Joseph Rogers built an inn on what is now 205 S. Rogers St. The original log-and-stone structure is now under clapboard siding.

Legend tells about an early visitor to Rogers Tavern. One day, a stranger came to the inn and asked for a room. The landlady showed him a room that he could share with two other gentlemen. The stranger proceeded to make disparaging remarks about a town that could not offer a gentleman a private room. Another guest at the inn overheard the remarks and seized the stranger by the arm ushering the stranger to the corncrib out back and threw him in. Once locked inside, the stranger was asked if he was willing to apologize and accept the first-offered room. He agreed. The Incredible Story of an Early African-American College

Swift Memorial College complex is a restored building that now serves as memorial museum and warm, accommodating public gathering space and is all that remains of the sprawling institution. This is the story below as copied from their website, swiftmuseum.org.

In East Tennessee, at the close of the Civil War, the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America found itself somewhat adrift and disorganized. In taking its bearings and considering its re-organization in 1863, it discovered that it had a new factor to deal with in taking up anew the work of the Master. That new factor was the newly-emancipated Freedmen. The change of affairs and relations which had been produced in their condition before the war, made it necessary for the Church to reconsider them in its re-organization and rehabilitation, and to determine not only its attitude toward them, but what they would do with them and for them.

It began the organization of Presbyterian Churches and parochial schools among the Freedmen, and threw open the doors of Maryville College for their higher education. The churches and schools grew and prospered to such an extent, and the local conditions became such that it was soon manifest the Maryville College did not and would not do the work which was needed to be done, and that something else should be done to relieve the situation. The conclusion was reached that another school similar to Maryville College should be established somewhere for the benefit of the Freedmen.

In canvassing the situation, it was thought by those most prominent and interested in the matter, that Rogersville, was the place for the school. For the founding and propagation of the

school, the providence of God pointed to Mr. W. H. Franklin, of Knoxville, a student of Maryville College. Mr. Franklin graduated from Maryville College in 1880. In 1883, he completed his theological course at Lane, and in June of the same year, entered upon the work to which he was chosen. In September, 1883, he began the work of teaching in a rough and open frame building which was made possible by underpinning and putting newspapers on the unplastered walls. The school grew from that small beginning through the most strenuous, persistent and bitter opposition, until it has become favorably and widely known as Swift Memorial College. The success of the work has been due to the fact that God was in the work; labor, faith and prayers behind it; the help of a great Church beneath it, and the pressing need of a great race before it.

The Board of Missions for Freedmen, desiring to honor a great and good man, and true friend of the race, suggested that the school be called Swift Memorial Institute, in memory of the Rev. E. E. Swift, D.D., who was for many years, the beloved pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Allegheny, and the esteemed President of the Freedmen’s Board at his death.

The objective of the school were to give colored youth a solid education in arts and sciences, to train and prepare them for domestic duties and the practicla business of life, to equip and prepare eficient and suitable teachers for the public and other schools, and to make good, intelligent citizens and to provide Christian workers for the duties and requirements of the church.

The College consisted of three buildings situated on six acres, more or less, for the accommodation of its students. The main building was a modern brick building of three stories. It is an attractive building, and is used as a dormitory for girls, class rooms, domestic and general purposes. The rooms for young ladies were large, comfortable, well lighted and ventilated. They were provided with all necessary furniture, including bedding. The boy’s building was also a brick

structure. It had three stories and an attic for dormitory purposes. Provisions were made for students to do their own laundry work in both buildings. Park Cottage is a small frame building, situated between the two buildings above and is used for the accommodations of little girls. A limited number of small girls can be accommodated and cared for in it.

Roulstone and his partner, Robert Ferguson, published the first issue of the Knoxville Gazette on November 5, 1791. Roulstone remained in Rogersville until October 1792.

rated into the concrete sidewalks were used as the original sidewalks, built by stonemasons who also built railroad bridges. Sections of the original limestone – block sidewalks can still be seen on East Broadway and Colonial Road.

Rogersville City School

Rogersville City School was originally the site of the Rogersville Syndical College (1850), a private Presbyterian School for women. The building burned down in 1920 and the Rogersville Grammar & High School was erected. The oldest part of the building was built after a fire destroyed the original school in 1928. The large boxwoods remaining in the front yard are more than 150 years old.

CHURCH HILL

Church Hill was established as a trading post and stagecoach stop called Spencer’s Mill and Patterson Mill in the late 18th century. It obtained it’s name following the establishment of a Methodist church on a hill overlooking the Holston River valley, which still stands today on Grandview St. Church Hill was incorporated in 1958.

Church Hill is located 19.1 miles from Rogersville.

Tennessee Newspaper and Printing Museum

In the year 1791, George Roulstone, the first printer to enter the State of Tennessee, took his press apart in Fayetteville, North Carolina, packed it on horses’ back or in wagons and trekked over the trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Holston Valley where Kingsport now stands. There, on the banks of the Holston River at James King’s Boat Yard, he loaded it on a flatboat and floated it down to Rogersville where he set it up and started printing the Knoxville Gazette, the first piece of printing ever attempted in Tennessee.

In crossing over the valley to reach the river, Roulstone passed over the spot where the Kingsport Press, once the largest book producing plant in the world, would one day operate. And when he finally got to Rogersville and started his

Rogers Cemetery

Joseph Rogers, founder of Rogersville, and his wife, Mary Amis Rogers are buried here. Also here are the grandparents of David Crockett, original owners of the land, who were killed by Indians in 1777. The cemetery is located 8.1 miles from Rogersville.

Pettibone House

(Old Tavern House), c. 1795 – 207 –209 South Rogers Street – This double house is built of logs under the clapboard exterior. It was connected to the original Rogers Tavern (no longer there) across the street by a covered walkway.

Amis House

Amis House was built by Thomas Amis, the father-in-law of Joseph Rogers, as a pioneer settlement. His stone house served as an inn for travelers. A tavern, general story, distillery, saw mill and grist mill was later established by Amis. The buildings were surround by a stakewall for protection.

The Amis House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and ownership has remained in the Amis family.

The house is located 3.3 miles from Rogersville at 677 Burem Road.

In 2017, Holston Electric Cooperative (HEC) saw a need to provide advanced communication solutions, such as highspeed internet, phone and television programming, to customers in Hawkins and Hamblen counties. The plan was to install a broadband fiber network in the area. By developing HolstonConnect, they are able to provide internet, telephone and television programming to areas that were not provided for. Holstonconnect is a not-for-profit and wholly -owned subsidiary of HEC.

James Sandlin, general manager for Holston Electric, informed the Hawkins County Commission in 2017 that studies showed that 40 percent of the cooperative’s customers didn’t have access to high-speed internet services at their homes. Sandlin explained that a subsidiary called HolstonConnect had been formed to provide broadband services to Holston Electric’s Hawkins, Hamblen and Greene County territories. He said that phase I was to build a system-wide broadband service and plans were to have the building of the fiberr optic cable broadband system finished by 2023.

Sandlin said that HolstonConnect had

110 miles of active plant (working fiber optic lines), about 340 miles of main fiber optic lines in place and about 940 miles left to build. The pace of the construction depended on obtain grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development and other resources available. He stated that fiber optic cable was being placed on Holston Electrice power poles to build the backbone.

On Aug. 21, 2020, state officials awarded $5.5 million to HolstonConnect from a $61 million in emergency broadband grants through the Tennessee Emergency Broadband Fund. The

was created due to the necessity of providing high-speed broadband availibilty to all citizens due to the impact of COVID-19. With the closure of schools, the shift of working from home instead of a primary work location, and medical facilities closing made it necessary to provide high-speed broadband internet to members of communities the ability to function equally in society in hard to reach areas. The funding was dedicated to providing the service to portions of Rogersville-North and the Pressman’s Home area and to a portion of the Persia area. In doing so more than 2,300 homes, businesses and industries were provided

this needed service.

HolstonConnect had connected more than 7,500 customers to the fiber optic broadband network by the start of 2021. The five-year fiber deployment was to be completed by the end of June 2021 two years ahead of schedule. Holston continued to pursue additional grants in order to include a Fiber-To-The-Meter Smart Grid component. By implementing this element it would make the big box providers ineligible for grant funds, there by allowing high-speed internet to be available for the 40 percent of last-mile members.

HolstonConnect improves the quality of high-speed internet for customers enabling them to engage in the online world. HolstonConnect offers ultra-fast upload, download and transfer data speeds. They are the first provider of a gig internet service to Hawkins County, with no data caps, and no throttling of upload speeds. They provide technical support, and consistent pricing for existing and new members. They improve the online experience for multiple users and devises operated by it’s members.

AN OVERVIEW

Hawkins County Emergency Communications, a 911 System

Hawkins County Emergency Communications, a 911 system, allows all Hawkins County residents to request fire, law enforcement or emergency medical assistance by dialing 911. They are headquartered at 2291 E. Main St., Rogersville.

Only emergency calls should be made by dialing 911.

For non-emergency calls to the 911 office, dial 272-7532.

Hawkins County Emergency Management Agency and Hawkins County Emergency Communications District launched a new mass notification system called Hyper-Reach. This mass notification platform offers many features that our previous system did not offer. Some of the key feature updates include unlimited use, integration with social media, the ability to activate

cell phones through the FEMA Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS), the ability to send alerts to Alexa devices, and many more features. As part of Hyper-Reach selected weather alerts are included.

Some phone data is uploaded by the vender but all residents and businesses are encouraged to enroll to confirm they are enrolled. The enrollment process for Hyper-Reach can be completed by one of the following options, by visiting the website hyperreach.com/tnhawkinssignup. html, calling 423-358-2294 and following the prompts; texting ALERTS to 423-3582294; using a Alexa unit by saying “Alexa, enable Hyper-Reach. To enroll in the service is free.

The Hyper-Reach system replaced the CodeRED system previously used by

Hawkins County and none of the enrollment data was able to be transferred, a new enrollment will be required. This new mass notification system will be fully implemented by Dec. 1, 2022 and the previous CodeRED system will no longer be used. This project is a joint venture between Hawkins County Emergency Management Agency and Hawkins County Emergency Communications District.

POST REFLECTIVE NUMBERS

To ease the difficulty of tracking down a house or business, the 911 program requests that 4-inch reflective house numbers be placed where they can be seen easily from the road.

Suggested locations are on a house, on a mailbox or on a post next to the driveway.

A 911 address must be obtained by all newcomers, or families who move from one residence to another, before having telephone service installed.

Pressmen’s Home

The Pressmen’s Home was the former headquarters for the International Printing Pressman and Assistants’ Union of North America. George L. Berry convinced the union to establish the location after he became he became president of the Pressman’s Union. The union purchased the Hale Springs Resort.

The Pressmen’s Home became a self sufficient town by adding larger and more elaborate facilityies. as the union grew. It even provided it’s own electricity. The locations building included administration buildings, the home building, a Tuberculosis sanitorium, Hotel Pressuaina, Memorial Chapel and a trade school.

In the mid-1960s, the U.S. federal government was lobbied by competing union that the rural East Tennessee location of the union was a determent to the interest of the union. The headquarters was moved in 1967 due to lack of funding and merger with other printing union. The home was closed in 1969 after providing retirement facilities for union members.

Over the years there has been attempts to revive the site, which included a tourist resort, retirement community and even a state penitentiary. In the 1970s, an investment group partially re-developed the site into a resort with tracts of land set aside for vacation homes. A golf course and country club are the only active projects.

Many of the original buildings are in disrepair or have been demolished.

The Pressman’s Home is now a ghost town to a by gone era. It is located 11.6 miles from Rogersville.

SURGOINSVILLE

Long Meadow

Long Meadow was a log structure built by William Young after receiving the property through a royal land grant. considered to be the oldest wooden structure in Tennessee. It is located in Carters Valley near Surgoinsville.

Long Meadow is located 11.3 miles from Rogersville.

Stoney Point

William Armstong was given a land grant in the 1780s on which he built

Stony Point. The location was established as Hawkins County in 1787 and was named for Benjamin Hawkins. Hawkins was a U.S. Sentor from North Carolina. A visitor to the Armstrong estate in 1797 was Louis Philippe, who would become King of France in 1830. Hawkins County saw combat in the American Civil War the most noted was the Battle of Rogersville on Nov. 6, 1863. Poor Valley State Park, a 1,900-2,200 acre are in western Hawkins County, was proposed and planned as a state park to promote economic development in Upper East Tennessee. In the 1970s that plan stalled. Stoney Point is located 13.3 miles from Rogersville.

A Walk Through Time - Rogersville HERITAGE / HISTORY

As treaties were made with Indian tribes and land companies opened vast tracts of land west of the Appalachian Mountains, an increasing flood of settlers moved into the western country of North Carolina and Virginia. General settlement of what is now Hawkins County began in the late 1760s and early 1770s. Following the Revolutionary War in 1784, North Carolina ceded leaving the scene of an accident western lands to the United State Government to help pay for leaving the scene of an accident share of the war debt. Soon after, a convention of delegates from Washing, Greene and Sulllivan counties met to form a new state, Franklin. But North Carolina then repealed leaving the scene of an accident law and reclaimed leaving the scene of an accident Western lands. The State of Franklin existed in opposition to North Carolina’s claim until 1788 when it

finally collapsed and the area submitted once again to the rule of North Carolina.

In 1787, Hawkins County North Carolina was created by the North Carolina legislature. County commissioners voted to locate the county seat at Joseph Rogers’ place on Crockett Creek. A combination courthouse and jail were built where the old Presbyterian Cemetery now stands, and the community was known as Hawkins Court House.

In 1790, North Carolina again ceded leaving the scene of an accident western lands to the United States, and Hawkins County the became the territorial capital at James White’s Fort in present day Knoxville. Tennessee became the 16th state in 1796.

Rogersville’s founder, Joseph Rogers,

was born in 1764 in Tyrone County, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1781 and came south to this area where he found work at the plantation of Thomas Amis, located on Big Creek, just east of the present town of Rogersville. In 1786, Rogers eloped with Mary, Amis’ 16-year old daughter. Relations between Thomas Amis and his son-in-law, Rogers, were never cordial.

In 1786, Rogers purchased a 281-acre tract of land from Robert Crockett (David Crockett’s uncle) following the death of Robert Crockett’s parents (David Crockett’s grandparents) in an Indian attack at the site of Crockett Spring Park. That piece of land was the site of the soon-to-be established town of Rogersville.

In 1789, the North Carolina legislature passed a bill, which was presented

by Joseph Rogers and his partner, James Hagan, to change the name of the town from Hawkins Court House to Rogersville. Thomas Amis was one of the surveyors who laid out the 30-acre town on Rogers’ land.

Hawkins County was a great thoroughfare as settlers bound for Kentucky and middle Tennessee made their way through the area following the Holston River and the great Wilderness Road through Cumberland Gap into Kentucky. With the traffic came new settlers and trade for the Inns in Rogersville. Joseph Rogers built his first tavern and Inn on present-day Rogers Street in 1786. In the 1820s, Rogersville’s Absolom Kyle stated a stagecoach line from Bristol to Knoxville, and the Atlanta to Washington stagecoach line also passed

through the town. In 1827, attorney and landowner John McKinney built what is now Hale Springs Inn.

George Roulston and Robert Ferguson printed the Knoxville Gauzette, the first newspaper in the Territory South of the River Ohio here in 1791. In 1792, Roulston moved the press to Knoxville, the new capital of the territory. Rogersville’s Tennessee Newspaper and Printing Museum reflects the area’s long involvement with the printing industry. Sawmills and gristmills were an important factor in early industry. The marble industry began in Rogersville in the late 1830s. The unique pink and read marble quarried in the area was used in the Tennessee state house and in the National Capital of Washington.

Rogersville has had an illustrious career, reflected both in the brilliant statesmen and businessmen it has produced and in leaving the scene of an accident many productive industries. Today, it reflects leaving the scene of an accident gracious past in leaving the scene of an accident homes and buildings and in the cordial manner of leaving the scene of an accident citizens. It is a genial Place to visit and, even more, a delightful place to call home.

MAIN STREET - TOWN SQUARE

Founder Joseph Rogers deeded the four grassy corners at the intersection of Main and Depot St. to the town. The squares have remained virtually intact since 1787. Historic buildings around the square include:

100 W. Main St., Farmers Hotel, c. 1847 – Built by Absolom Kyle who owned a passenger and mail stagecoach line between Knoxville and Bountville. He also owned an interest in a stagecoach line that ran from Washington D.C. to Altanta, Georgia. In 1908, Dr. Jacob Miller converted the hotel building into a hospital and sanatorium.

107 W. Main St., Wax-Watterson House, c. 1822 – Jacob Wax whose father, Henry Wax Sr. had emigrated from Germany, built a log house lifed here until 1841 when he sold the property to Absolom Kyle. The original logs are covered with siding.

Hawkins County Courthouse, c. 1836 –the oldest original courthouse still in use in Tennessee. The architect, prominent local builder John Dameron, probably based his desing on Thomas Jeffers’s plans for the Botetourt County (Virginia) Courthouse. In 1842, he designed and built the new courthouse for Knox County.

Masonic Temple, c. 1845 – Overton Lodge No. 4, F&AM – Home of the oldest Masonic Lodge in continuous operation in Tennessee. The chapter was chartered in 1805 and named after Adnrew Jackson’s law partner, John Overton. The building was built in 1839 as the first branch of the Bank of the State of Tennessee. Overton

Lodge purchased the building in 1873.

EAST WALK

East Main St. - From Church St. Going East

324 East Main, c. 1848 – George White bought the property from Richard Mitchell, and in 1848, sold the lot to Archibald Carmichael, a doctor who had come to Rogersville to invest in the marble industry. Carmichael built the house from 1848 t9 1850. In 1902, Bart Simpson purchased the house. His widow conveyed the property to her daughter, Louise S. Hooper, and she lived there until her death in 1996. the house is an excellent example of Rogersville’s collection of Federal architecture.

400 E. Main St., c. 1874

403 E. Main St., Clay-Kenner House, 1935 – Built by Willie Blount Mitchell, son of Richard Mitchell. Sold in 1861 to John Gray Bynum and his wife, Nancy Phipps Bynam. Bynam was shot and killed on the front steps of the Tennessee Bank Building (now the Masonic Lodge). His wife then married Henry Boyle Clay. Their Daughter, Mary Clay, married W.D. Kenner. After a fire destroyed their house on Broadway, the Kenners acquired this house from the Bynam heirs and lived here until their deaths. The property is now owned by the Rogersville-Hawkins County Library Board.

406 E. Main St., c. 1884

430 E. Main St., c. 1915 – the lot was part of the John A. McKinney estate at the time of his death in 1845. In the 1930’s, Dr. William H. Armstrong maintained his office in a small building at the rear of the house and operated a hospital in the house. After 1936, the residence was

converted into a rooming house known as The Elms.

438 E. Main St., c. 1900

Rosemont, c. 1842, 500 East Main St. - Built by John A. McKinney as a wedding gift to his daughter Susan and John Netherland. Netherland was a prominent Tennessee legislator and a U.S. Senator in the 1830s.

John A. McKinney Law Offices / The Spring House, c. 1816 – Used as law offices by John A. McKinney and by his son-in-law John Netherland. A spring rises beneath the building and flows from it a the cut stone channel.

Three Oaks, c. 1810, 310 Colonial Road, c. 1810, - When attorney John A. McKinney and his wife Elzabeth moved to Rogersville in 1810, they purchased this manor house and land from Richard Mitchell. The house, smokehouse and tenant’s cabin were situated on a tract of land extending to the Holston River.

WEST WALK

Main Street – Depot Street to Hasson Street

110 E. Main, Hale Springs Inn, c. 1824 – Built by John A. McKinney, the building was designed by John Dameron and included a store and a hotel. The property was first named McKinney’s Tavern. In 1882, George A. Murray purchased it and renamed it Hale’s Springs House to advertise leaving the scene of an accident connection to the Hale’s Spring spa operation in what is now Pressman’s Home. Carl and Janet Netherland-Brown purchased and renovated it in 1982. In 2003, the Rogersville Heritage Association purchased it.

111 W. Main St., Kyle House (William (Simpson House), c. 1937 – William Simpson and Samuel Neill Sr. built a twostory log structure which served as store and living quarters for the two families. After their partnership dissolved, Simpson built the large brick house. The property changed hands several times before Gale P. Kyle purchased it in 1905. The Kyles made their home there and also kept a boarding house and tourist home in the location for many years.

119 W. Main St., Armstrong House (Dr. John M. Pierce Home), c. 1883 – Dr. Pierce built the large house in 1881 along with a small frame office building in the southeast corner where he practiced and maintained a drug store. His heirs included his daughter, Mary (Mrs. Rod) Armstrong whose family still lives there. The Armstrong family added the front portico and columns to the house in 1921.

120 W. Main, Joseph Rogers Building, c.1810 – The brick structure was built by Joseph Rogers and served him variously as a store, post office, bank, office and

private residence. In 1820, the Nashville Bank established a branch there.

North Hasson Street

Hasson and Kyle Streets, St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., c. 1912 –The lad was purchased after 1885 by the Board of Missions for Freedmen of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., and became part of the campus of Swift Memorial Junior College. St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church was chartered in Tennessee on May 15, 1912. Dr. W.H. Franklin, president of Swift College, served as pastor of the church until his retirement.

309 W. Kyle St., Rogersville Presbyterian Church, c. 1840 – The church was founded in 1805 and built in 1840. The church’s balcony contains original pews. The church’s earliest cemetery is located on Washington St., next to the First Baptist Church.

Hasson and Spring Streets, Price Public School Community Center, c. 1922 – In 1868, a group of black community leaders purchased the plot of land “for the purpose of building a schoolhouse for the education of colored childre.” In 1870, a

two-room log school was erected and was used until 1922 when construction of the modern facility was begun. It is constructed of hand-fired bricks. The school was placed on the National Historical Register in 1988. One of the schoolrooms is devoted to a museum of Swift College and Price School memorabilia.

South Depot St.

415 S. Depot St., Southern Depot, c. 1890 – the end of the line for trains from Bulls Gap. Restored in 1986, the Depot houses the office of the Rogersville Heritage Association and the Tennessee Newspaper and Printing Museum.

North Depot St.

200 N. Depot St., Swift Memorial Junior College – Swift College was founded in 1883 by the Rev. Dr. William Henderson Franklin of Knoxville, the first black graduate of Maryville College. The school was named for the Rev. Elijah E. Swift, president of the Board of Missions for Freedmen. Swift College served the area until 1955 when it was converted to a public high school. Shortly after, leaving the scene of an accident students were in-

tegrated into the Hawkins county public school system. The lovely administration building has been town down, but a number of the buildings remain and are used as offices by the Hawkins County Board of Education. The enclosed cemetery contains the graves of Dr. and Mrs. Franklin.

MAIN STREET BUSINESS DISTRICT Depot Street To Church Street

107 E. Main St., US Bank – a number of businesses operated on this lot before Citizens Bank chartered in 1887, moved here in 1890. In 1898, the old building was razed and a new bank building was built. The building was remodeled in 1978.

110 E. Main St., Simpson Building (Richard H. Mitchell Building), c. 1841 –Richard H. Mitchell erected this brick building and operated a general store here. After his death, the Rogersville Bank leased the property until 1896 when it closed. In 1887, Lou Simpson purchased the property and operated Simpson Brothers store in this location. In 1941, ParksBelk purchased the property and ran a store here until the early 1980s. Hawkins County purchased and renovated the

building in 1999-2000 to serve as an annex to the courthouse.

124 E. Main St., Alexander Building, c. 1830 – In 1823, Dick Alexander, a lawyer, purchased the lot and the frame buildin on it. In 1830, he built a two-story brick structure for his law office and residence. In 1921, Milum E. Testerman purchased the lot from Testerman Motor Company. In 1979, Lloyd Richardson bought the property and refurgished the upper floor of the building for apartments.

115 E. Main St., Mitchell’s Tavern, c. 1815 – George Roulston, a printer from North Carolina, purchased the lot from Joseph Rogers and James Hagan in October 1791. On Nov. 5, 1791, Roulston printed the Knoxville Gazette, the first newspaper published in the territory south of the Ohio River. In 1820, a brick tavern house, The Mitchell Tavern, was built on the stie. It was razed in 1830 by James K. Neill who built the present large brick building. Later, the building became a grocery and hardware store owned by A.B. Rogan. Boyd Law Office purchased the property in the fall of 2001. Their renovation has maintained the original floors, the ceiling in the reception room and the original hand-rope, pulley-driven freight elevator.

116 E. Main St., Powel House – George R. Powel purchased this property in 1842 from his father-in-law, Nicholas Fain. He built a two-story brick hotel on the property known as the Powel Hotel or the Powel House. Various business owners have owned the first floor of the hotel and the upstairs roooms have served as offices to a number of professionals and lawyers. The Rogersville Board of Mayor and Aldermen met there from 1860 until the new city hall was built on Washington St. in the early 1930s.

121 East Main St., Rod Armstrong Building, c. 1922 – Rod and Henry Armstrong leased the lot in the early 1900s and operated a clothing store, Rod Armstrong & Co. In 1922, Rod and Henry built a new brick store on the lot. Heirs of the Armstrong family owned and operated the store until 1982.

Alexander Peter Stewart (Historical Marker) – Armstrong was born in Rogersville. He graduated from West Point in

1842. Armstrong taught at Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee, from 1845-1860. He was appointed Brigadier General for the Confederacy in 1861, promoted to Lieutenant General and given command of Polk’s Corps until the end of the Civil War. Armstrong retured to Cumberland College and was named Chancellor of the University of Mississippi from 1874-1886. He died in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1908.

West Main Street - From Hasson Street To Rogers Street

203 W. Main St., Rogersville Post Office, c. 1931 – The building is the only depression-era post office still in use in Tennessee. The floor of the main hall is lain with pink Tennessee marble.

220 W. Main St., Presbyterian Parsonage, c. 1838 – The Rev. James A. Lyon was the first pastor to live there. During the Civil War, the home was sold. From 1946 until 1988, it was used as an apartment house.

South Rogers Street

205 S. Rogers St., Rogers Tavern (Big Tavern House), c. 1810 – Built by Joseph Rogers, to accommodate overflow from the old Tavern House. The building is constructed of logs under the clapboard exterior.

207-209 S. Rogers St., Pettibone House (Old Tavern House), c. 1795 – The double house is built of logs under the clapboard exterior. It was connected to the original Rogers Tavern building, which no longer exists, across the street by a covered walkway.

Rogers Street: Stone Sidewalks – The large blocks incorporated into the concrete sidewalks were used as the original sidewalks, built by stonemasons who also built area railroad bridges. Section of the original limestone-block sidewalks can still be seen on East Broadway and Colonial Road.

West Main Street - From Rogers Street To Rogan Road

301 W. Main St., c. 1891 – James Johnson built The Margraves House.

311 W. Main St., c. 1839 – Joseph Roger’s daughter, Nancy Cameron, sold

the lot to Jacob Nugent, a tailor, who built the house on site.

312 W. Main St., c. 1890 – The home on the site was built by Roger Kyle.

317 W. Main St., c. 1836 – Originally the home of Joseph Roger’s daughter, Frances G. Rogers Walker and her husband, Dr. Hu Walker.

324 W. Main St., c. 1851 – The house of handmade brick was built by Joseph Brown Heiskell. Heiskell, a lawyer and Confederate sympathizer, subsequently moved to Memphis. In 1875, he sold the property to John A. McKinney Jr., trustee for Margaret McKinney Rogan, wife of James Woods Rogan. In 1974, Jack Taylor purchased to property and ran a funeral home in the house until his death in 1958. The boxwood hedge is thought to be over 200 years old.

325 W. Main St., c. 1891 – The house was built on property originally owned by Dr. and Mrs. Hu Walker.

413 W. Main St., c. 1855 – The house, originally owned by Absolom Kyle, was

once a stagecoach inn on the Atlanta to Washington stage line.

HISTORICAL CEMETERIES

Rogan Road, Rogers Cemeteries – Joseph Rogers, founder of Rogersville, and his wife, Mary Amis Rogers are buried there. Also the grandparents of David Crockett who settled the land in 1775 and were killed by Indians in 1777. Crockett Spring is located in the park behind the cemetery.

Presbyterian Cemetery – Is located on Kyle St. to the east of the Rogersville Presbyterian Church.

Old Presbyterian Cemetery – Located next to the First Baptist Church on Washington St.

Old Methodist Cemetery – The Methodist-Episcopal Church South was located at the corner of Kyle and Church Streets. The cemetery extends from Depot St. to Church St.

McKinney Cemetery – Located of Stamps St. off East Main St.

HERITAGE / HISTORY

The history of the Rogersville Review

Located in the “Cradle of Tennessee Journalism,” where the state’s first newspaper was printed by George Roulstone in 1791—also the third newspaper West of the Appalachian Mountains—The Rogersville Review was founded by Will Robertson on July 23, 1885. Under its current names, as well as The Holston Review, it has remained the newspaper of record for Hawkins County and its communities for more than a century.

While the newspaper began as a weekly publication, today, it is printed twice weekly on Wednesday and Friday.

One of the newspaper’s most celebrated publishers was the late Eleanor Sheets, who passed away before The Review’s centennial celebration on July 18, 1985.

The Newport Plain Talk employed Eleanor and her husband, the late J. Fred

Sheets, before they relocated to Rogersville in 1932 at the request of Major George L. Berry, president of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union, which was headquartered in Hawkins County at that time.

Berry hired the Sheets, along with Spurgeon Akers, to manage The Review.

Though Akers left the paper soon afterward, it was in 1958 that Fred, who served as publisher and editor, passed away and left the paper to his widow.

THE SHEETS ERA

Eleanor became the new publisher and editor, and continued to publish The Review until her death.

A legendary character, among the first female publishers, Mrs. Sheets was widely recognized as a champion of her commu-

nity.

During her years at The Review, she often campaigned for safer highways and is credited with having coined the phrase “Bloody 11W,” in the years before the construction of four-lane “superhighway” U.S. 11W through Hawkins County.

Sheets’ keen publishing ability took her all the way to the White House in the 1960s, where she was the only female publisher among dozens of other members of the press to dine with President John F.Kennedy in the White House Dining Room. (Sheets is pictured above in a white hat, seated next to President Kennedy.)

Her columns were well read and bear re-reading just for their construction and use of words, if not the content that offers readers today a glimpse of journalism in another era.

Copies are available for perusing at The Review office, as well as on microfilm through the Hawkins County Library System.

It was Eleanor who also introduced one of the Southeast’s first African-American columnists, Beatrice Cope, who began writing for The Review at the height of the Segregation Era. Mrs. Cope continued writing for The Review until shortly before her death in the early 2000s.

Other popular columnists introduced by Sheets included the late “Snookie” Burns and the late Mildred Shortt, whose local viewpoints and stories were a popular read for many years.

It was also in Eleanor’s time that The Rogersville Review became the last such letterpress weekly newspaper in Tennessee.

In July 1981, a conversion was made to cold type, photocomposition, and other state-of-the-art mechanical processes. And today, well the process is even more refined, with pages constructed on computers, sent electronically to the Greeneville Sun, where it is sent directly to a plate and then put on the press to print.

A TIME OF CHANGE

At the time of Eleanor’s death, her grandson, W. Andes Hoyt, who had served as associate editor, assumed the role of editor and publisher.

In 1988, he and his sister, Lace Hoyt Stevens sold The Review to Jones Media, Inc., led by John M. Jones Sr., and his family, which includes the president of Hawkins County Publishers Inc., Gregg Jones.

Doug Morris was named publisher and editor on May 23, 1988, bringing 25 years of newspaper experience with him, having started as a reporter at the Morristown Daily Gazette-Mail.

Following Morris on October 15, 1990, Ellen M. Addison (Myatt) was named publisher. Myatt previously served as publisher of The Smyth County News, Marion, Virginia.

It was during Myatt’s tenure that The Review became a twice-weekly publication.

In 1997, Kevin Burcham, former advertising director for The Mountaineer in Waynesville, N.C. was named publisher and editor. During this time, The Review moved to 316 E. Main Street (pictured above), from it’s Washington Street location, where it had been since 1953.

On January 15, 2001, Bill Parsons was named publisher.

It was during his tenure that The Review converted to an all-mail delivery system.

On June 19, 2006, Ellen May Addison Myatt resumed leadership after serving nearly 10 years as publisher of The Business Journal for Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia, Blountville, Tennessee.

On July 1, 2009, Jesse Lindsey was named editor and publisher of the newspaper.

During Lindsey’s time at The Review, a lifestyles publication Discover Hawkins County Magazine, was launched.

On November 11, 2013, Tommy Campbell was named editor and publisher, bringing more than 33 years of experience in publishing newspapers in Alabama and North Carolina.

THE FUTURE

Through the years,The Rogersville Review has expanded its news coverage to include all Hawkins County communities, as well as coverage from events in neighboring Hancock and Grainger Counties.

Today, The Review not only publishes two editions of its original newspaper, but also the Discover magazine series, Hawkins County Great Homesearch, and Hawkins County Marketplace.

The newspaper’s online presence also continues to grow, meeting the ever-changing needs of 21st Century journalism, with the establishment of the new, interactive website and online subscription service in 2014.

The Review also offers daily news updates and additional reader commentary on Facebook.

All qualified citizens have the right to vote in national, state and local elections after registering to vote.

To be eligible to vote in Tennessee, a qualified citizen must be a citizen of the United States, must be 18 years of age or older on or before the date of the next election and must be a resident of Tennessee.

As a convicted felon eligibility to register and vote depends upon the crime convicted of and the date of the conviction. If a felony conviction made a felon ineligible, the felon may regain their eligibility if the conviction has been expunged or if a successful petition to has their voting rights have been granted, unless the conviction for a crime rendered the felon permanently ineligible to vote.

In order to participate in an election, a qualified voter must be properly registered no later than thirty (30) days before the election. The election commission office will process any by-mail voter registration form that has been postmarked at least thirty (30) days before the election. T.C.A 2-2-109.

NATIONAL / STATE VOTING:

Federal and state general elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years.

In presidential election years, the Presidential Preference Primary election is

held on the first Tuesday in February. The Republican and Democratic parties in Greene County may choose to hold their primaries on the same date.

Federal and State Republican and Democratic party primary elections are held on the first Thursday in August in even-numbered years, in conjunction with the County General Election.

LOCAL ELECTIONS:

Registered voters may vote by mail when certain conditions are met. If voters wish to vote by mail, they must request a ballot in writing over their signature. The first day to receive a request is ninety (90) days prior to the election, and the last day to receive a request is seven (7) days prior to the election. Information About Driver’s License Services GOVERNMENT / CITIZENSHIP

The Hawkins County Driver License is located at Hawkins County Clerk Driver Service Office, 110 E. Main St., Rogersville.

The center is where to go to obtain license reinstatements, license renewals, learner permits, commercial licenses, ID-only licenses, and handgun licenses.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Any Tennessee resident with a suspended license may be eligible for license reinstatement.

Tennessee residents 18 years old or over with proper identification, proof of citizenship and proof of residency may apply for a Tennessee driver’s license. A list of certifiable documents that are acceptable can be found at the website or by calling the center at 1-866-849-3548.

Tests include a knowledge and skills test, vision screening, and a road test. The road test can also be administered at the Greene, Hamblen or Washington county driver’s license stations.

Appointments are needed for the road test only and can be made online at www.tn.gov or by calling 1-866-8493548.

A handbook and study guide for the knowledge and skills test may be picked up at the reinstatement center.

Those under the age of 18 may apply for the graduated driver’s license. The Graduated Driver License Program eases young drivers into the responsibility of driving.

At 15, one can apply for a learner’s

permit, which requires the driver to be accompanied by a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat. A proof of school/ attendance progress form (located on the website) must be obtained as well.

The learner’s permit carries a curfew of no driving between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

To apply for an intermediate restricted license one must meet the following criteria: driver has held a permit for at least 180 days, reached the age of 16, has logged 50 hours of behind-thewheel driving experience (including 10 hours of night driving), has passed a road skills test and has maintained a safe driving record (less than six points).

A parent or legal guardian must sign the 50-hour certification form (located

Garbage, Recycling Pick-Up and Disposal GOVERNMENT / CITIZENSHIP

Several Hawkins County Convenience Centers placed throughout the area serve Hawkins County residents with sites for garbage and recycling disposal. Locations, hours and phone numbers for the convenience centers are listed below. All of the centers are closed on Sundays.

All location take the following recyclables: vehicle batteries, scrap aluminum, aluminum drink cans, aluminum cat food cans, plastic milk jugs, plastic soft drink bottles, newspapers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, used motor oil and transmission fluids, air conditioners, white goods such as stoves and refrigerators, water heaters, electric heaters and most metals. Exclusions is the Lakemont location, which is solid waste only.

Tires can be recycled at the Carter’s Valley site every first Saturday of January, April, July and October, and any-

time at the Recycle center. Limit of 8 passenger tires per residence, per year.

How To Get A Passport GOVERNMENT / CITIZENSHIP

A United States passport verifies to other governments and officials that the holder is a U.S. citizen.

A passport may be obtained by any American citizen who has not been convicted of a felony.

For people traveling outside the United States, passport applications are available at the Hawkins County Chancery Court office at 100 E. Main St., Rogersville. Applications are also available online at www.travel.state. gov.

Visas, which are stamped into the U.S. passport, are required for entry into some countries, but not for all.

To determine whether a visa is necessary to enter the country you are planning to visit, call or check the particular country’s embassy website.

Vaccinations are not required in order for a resident to return to the U.S., but immunizations are required for entrance into certain other countries.

For more information on immunizations, contact the Hawkins County Health Center at 272-7641. The department is located at 201 Park Boulevard, Rogersville.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The first step in obtaining a passport is to go online at www.travel.state.gov or pick up an application at the Hawkins County Chancery Court office.

Next, make an appointment with the Hawkins County Chancery Court Office and bring the following: one proof of U.S. citizenship, one proof of identity and two proper photographs (see details below).

For a U.S.- born citizen, proof of citizenship would be a certified copy of one’s birth certificate, a full- page certificate with the state’s embossed, multi-colored seal.

If you do not own a copy of your birth certificate, then submit a registrar’s notice of birth in addition to a hospital birth record, school or family records, etc. Evidence must include given name and surname, birth date and place, and signature of the issuing official.

A citizen born outside the U.S. must submit his or her previous U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or citizenship or Report of a Birth Abroad.

A driver’s license is a sufficient proof of identity, but temporary licenses and learner’s permits are not permissible.

PHOTOGRAPHS NEEDED

The second step in procuring a passport is to have a set of two photographs made for the passport.

Each photograph must be 2-inch x 2-inch, must have been taken within the last six months and must present a front view of the

individual, sizing the face no smaller than 1-inch x 1 3/8-inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (including hair). Both eyes must be open, with a neutral facial expression. Hats and/or sunglasses are not permissible.

A white or off-white background is required.

Passport photographs can be taken at the Hawkins County Chancery Court office before or on the day of the appointment for a cost of $10.

Full information regarding photo requirements is printed on the back of the passport application.

FEES FOR PASSPORTS

The third and final step toward obtaining a passport is to pay the fees required.

Passports for adults (16 years and over) cost $140 (this includes $110 to the U.S. Department of State and $30 to the USPS) and are valid for 10 years.

Passports for minors (under 16 years) cost $95 (this includes $80 to the U.S. Department of State and $15 to the USPS) and remain valid for five years after issuance.

To obtain a passport within two weeks, there is a $60 fee for expedited service, including a fee of $17.56 for return overnight postage.

Check or money order made payable to the U.S. Department of State is the method of payment.

The $35 fee for the postal service can be

paid by check, credit, debit, money order or cash.

APPLICANTS UNDER 18

Applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by one parent or legal guardian (with proper legal documentation) when returning the application.

Applicants under the age of 14 must be accompanied by both parents or legal guardian(s) and present:

1. evidence of the child’s U.S. citizenship;

2. evidence of child’s relationship to parents or guardian(s); and

3. parental identification.

If only one parent appears, one of the following must additionally be submitted:

• second parent’s written statement consenting to passport issuance for the child,

• primary evidence of sole authority to apply; or

• a written statement (made under penalty of perjury) explaining the second parent’s unavailability.

When an application is completed, the clerk will send it to the passport center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Renewal forms for existing passports and lost or stolen passports are also available. The renewal application may be picked up at the post office, completed by the applicant and sent directly to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Hawkins County Technology Department Oversee

The Technology Services Provided To Area Schools

The Hawkins County Schools Technology Department is comprised of nine full-time staff members dedicated to maintaining the ever-growing technology infrastructure of Hawkins County Schools. Services provided by the HCS Technology Department includes an enterprise level data center, manages email accounts for users throughout the enterprise, the configuration/repair/

maintenance of new/existing computer systems and other peripherals throughout the enterprise, software support, training, implementation of wired and wireless networked services, security surveillance systems, as well as telecommunications equipment.

Each school has its own local area network connected to the wide area

network by a fiber connection. This bandwidth is shared among the approximately 5000 computers, which consists primarily of Windows devices. Additionally there are approximately 6000 iPads and Chromebooks distributed throughout the district, which are controlled by Mobile Device Managements systems. Hawkins County Schools utilizes an onsite content filter as well as

filtering provided by our Internet Service Provider, to promote a safe online experience for students and staff.

Colleges, Universities In East Tennessee EDUCATION

Several colleges and universities in Northeast Tennessee serve students from Greene County.

Tusculum University and Walters State Community College have campuses in Greene County. Other regional institutions with a reasonable commute attract many Greene County students as well.

TUSCULUM UNIVERSITY

Enrollment: Approximately 1,735. Just over 1,400 are undergraduate students, and just over 325 are in graduate programs.

Tuition: Approximate cost of 202021 tuition, room and board is $34,800$35,800 for both in and out-of-state residents.

Academics: Founded in 1794 as Tusculum College, Tusculum University is the first higher education institution in Tennessee and the first institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) to admit women. The university was the first institution of higher education in East Tennessee to provide degree programs specifically designed for working adults. It transitioned university status in 2018 to demonstrate the breadth and depth of its programs and position for long-term growth.

It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctorate degrees. Tusculum has locations in Greeneville, Knoxville and Morristown.

Tusculum University offers more than 60 majors, minors and pre-professional programs.

Its Niswonger College of Optometry is engaged in the process of develop -

ing its program to meet accreditation standards of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. When it receives the necessary approvals, the university will have the 24th college of optometry in the nation and the fifth in the Southeast. The university is also seeking accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant to establish a physician assistant program in the College of Health Sciences.

Tusculum’s traditional student body is composed of individuals from 31 different states and 34 foreign countries. The university’s student body includes working adults who can earn a degree through adult and online programs designed to accommodate family and career responsibilities.

Athletics: Tusculum is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the South Atlantic Conference. The university fields varsity teams in baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, cross country, cheerleading, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Pioneer Park doubles as the home of the Tusculum baseball team and the Greeneville Reds of Minor League Baseball’s Appalachian League.

WALTERS STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Many students who attend immediately after high school benefit from Tennessee Promise, which provides the state’s high school graduates with 2 years of a state community or technical college tuition-free, and the Tennessee Hope Lottery Scholarship. Students over the age of 24 or classified as independent students benefit from a similar program called Tennessee Reconnect.

Walters State offers over 150 programs that lead to associate degrees or technical certifications. WSCC alumni reside in all 50 states, and the college has been recognized among the nation’s top tech-savvy community colleges. It is an Apple Distinguished School. Walters State has also been recognized as a VETS Campus and a military friendly college.

WSCC provides parallel university programs that prepare students to transfer two years of college work to a four-year institution. The Tennessee Transfer Pathway provides for a smooth transfer of credits.

Also offered are public service programs in support of economic and community development; dual-enrollment courses offering college-level work to high school students; advanced and developmental education programs for students with certain academic needs; student development and leadership

programs and activities; and research and development activities applied to institutional advancement.

WSCC’s East Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy is located on the Niswonger Campus. The campus also hosts the respiratory care program, the occupational therapy program and the nursing program.

EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY

How To Apply For A Library Card

Anyone who lives, works, attends school or owns property in Hawkins County or who lives within fifty (50) miles of Hawkins County is eligible to borrow materials from any library in the Hawkins County Library System. All patrons must fill out an official Application Card*. Adults must provide valid photo identification with

a current, legal address. Examples of acceptable identification are Driver’s license; Passport; or Student ID card. If photo identification does not have correct address, another form of ID will be required. An example would be a utility bill with their current address. Patrons below the age of 18 must complete a Juvenile Application Card** which must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Children who are at least six years of age and are able to print their name may be issued a library card. There is no charge for the first (1st) library card; however a replacement card is $5.00.

Isaiah 117 House Coming To Hawkins and Hancock Counties

Hawkins and Hancock County will soon have an Isaiah 117 House to meet the needs of children awaiting foster care placement.

Isaiah 117 house is a home that provides physical and emotional support in a safe and loving home for children awaiting foster care placement.

The kickoff event was held May 22 at the Rogersville Middle School. Rhonda Paulson was on hand to discuss the history and purpose of Isaiah 117 House. Alison Osborne has been named as the Expansion Coordinator.

In an article published in The Rogers-

ville Review published March 22, Osborne told the Review that Isaiah 117 House volunteers have begun a tradition of setting their alarms to 1:17 p.m. each day to pray over the organization, volunteers, children in DCS custody, caseworkers, foster families and biological families. Anyone interested in supporting the organization is encouraged to join in this tradition.

THE PURPOSE

When children are removed from their homes out of concern for their welfare, they are usually brought to the Depart-

ment of Children’s Services offices to await placement with a foster family. This wait can be several hours to nearly a full day. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry and in dirty clothing.

Isaiah 117 provides a comforting home where these children instead can be brought to wait - a place that is safe with friendly and loving volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys, and snuggly blankets. This space allows children to receive the comfort and care they need while DCS staff can do the neces-

sary paperwork and identify a good foster placement.

Humane Society Helps Animals In Need

Hawkins County Humane Society is located at 5180 Highway 11W, Rogersville. The phone number is (423) 272-6538, hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, noon until 4 p.m.

The Hawkins County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter.

They are a 501(c)(3) organization that receives no government funding. Deductible donations enable the organization to care for more than 1500 homeless and unwanted dogs and cats each year, assists local authorities with animal cruelty cases by providing veterinary care, special needs food and socialization to animals that are victims of cruelty and neglect, providing Humane Education to the public, including children at local schools and are dedicated to speaking up for homeless animals who cannot speak for themselves.

To Adopt a Pet

• Knowledgeable staff in the Adoption Center will assist you in finding a dog or cat that is a good match. All adopted pets are fully vetted, including spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchip, and vet exam. When you adopt from the Hawkins County Humane Society, you are giving an unwanted pet a second chance at life.

Lost and Found Database

• In an effort to reunite lost pets with their owners, the Hawkins County Hu-

mane Society’s Adoption Center keeps an undated database of lost and found animals in Greene County. Call the Adoption Center if you have lost or found a pet.

Low-Income Spay/Neuter and LowCost Spay/Neuter Programs

• Because cost is often the biggest reason why pets are not spayed or neutered, the Hawkins County Humane Society offers spay/neuter vouchers to pet owners of low-income as funds allow. Access to low cost spay/neuter programs are available to all Hawkins County citizens.

ROGERSVILLE—The August Cruise-in on the Square, organized by Rogersville Main Street Program, was held downtown on Aug. 12, 2016 under sunny skies. Volunteer Speedway Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap hosts stock car races. The 0.4-mile, highbanked, oval dirt track is located near the intersection of U.S. 11E and Interstate 81 at Exit 23 at 14095 West Andrew Johnson Highway, Bulls Gap, TN 37711.

Bristol Motor Speedway

NASCAR fans’ need for speed is fueled at the nearby “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”

Hawkins County is located about an hour away from NASCAR’s most popular track, Bristol Motor Speedway. Located on Highway U.S. 11E in Bristol, the historic venue can be claimed by this region’s race fans as their home track.

Each spring and late summer, race fans make their way to the legendary highbanked track.

With attendance figures that can top 150,000, Bristol Motor Speedway plays host to some of the largest crowds in professional racing.

The Night Race in August is one of the most popular weeks of racing on NASCAR’s national circuit.

Bristol Motor Speedway’s Fan Zone,

which is open year-round, includes interactive displays, a theater and Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway history exhibits.

The weekend comes to a close with the Saturday night classic, the NASCAR Night Race.

Bristol Dragway

Complementing Bristol Motor Speedway is the legendary Bristol Dragway, better known to the racing world as “Thunder Valley.”

The quarter-mile strip hosts the NHRA Full Throttle Series each summer in the form of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

Nitro-burning Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars blister the quarter-mile at speeds exceeding 320 mph, while Pro Stock cars provide some of the closest racing in all motor sports. In addition to the NHRA’s visit, a year-long calendar of events keeps the Dragway busy.

Bristol Dragway holds numerous events throughout the summer.

From March through October, the dragway hosts bracket racing, which sees a large number of area racers competing for more than $100,000 in cash and awards.

BASEBALL

There are nine Appalachian League teams in the area. The teams are summer collegiate baseball teams. The new league includes Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol and Elizabethton in Tennessee; Burlington in North Carolina; Bluefield and Princeton in West Virginia; and Danville and Pulaski in Virginia. All teams from the previous Rookie League are participants in the new PDP league.

The Appalachian League season runs annually from the first week of June to the first week of August. The new dates coincide with the players returning to their respective schools for the new school year.

The two closest teams are the Greeneville Flyboys and the Kingsport Axmen.

ROGERSVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Provides Many Recreation Options

The Rogersville Parks & Recreation Department oversees the Rogersville City Park, Swift Mini Park and the Rogersville City pool.

The Rogersville City Park consists of 42 acres of recreational facilities including: three pavilions, four lighted tennis courts, five small picnic shelters, multi-purpose field with stage, walking/jogging trail, playground, fishing (duck pond), outdoor basketball courts, horseshoe pits, six baseball/ softball fields, public swimming pool, and sand volleyball court. Swift Mini Park is a five acre park located on Hasson Street with an outdoor basketball court, picnic shelter, playground area, picnic tables, horseshoe pits, open play area, and walking/jogging trail.

HAWKINS COUNTY AGRICULTURE EXTENSION

Serves The Agriculture Community In Hawkins County

The Hawkins County Agriculture Extension office serves the citizens of Hawkins County with educational programs in the areas of Agriculture, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community Resource Development, and 4-H Youth Development. They are an outreach branch of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and Tennessee State University, providing research-based solutions and information to the citizens of Tennessee.

The Hawkins County Airport (airport identifier: RVN) is a public airport owned by Hawkins County offering private aircraft service and cargo shipping.

The airport cover and area of 56 acres. It has one runway which measures 3,502x75 feet. In 2009 the aircraft operations totaled 12,616 with an average of 35 per day.

TRI-CITIES REGIONAL AIRPORT TN/ VA

The Asheville (North Carolina) Regional Airport (AVL) is served by com-

The terminal building opens at 4:30 a.m. and closes after the last flight of the day arrives. The airfield is open 24 hours a day.

AVL provides non-stop flights to 17 locations, including hubs in Atlanta, Charlotte, Washington, D.C., Newark, Chicago and Dallas/Fort Worth.

The Asheville Regional Airport has an 8,001-foot runway.

The Rogersville Review

Adams Publishing Group Inc. publishes The Rogersville Review, Hawkins County’s hometown newspaper and website. The newspaper has served Hawkins County since 1885.

The Rogersville’s website offers all of the newspaper content to paid subscribers of the print edition, with some content provided free online to nonsubscribers.
