Jim Caswell, Rogersville’s Automotive Artist By Randy Ball ROGERSVILLE -- Jim Caswell loves automotive art. His work has been used on t-shirts, dash plaques and advertising for countless automotive events such as car shows and cruise-ins. Jim’s continuing journey in the art world goes back several decades. Jim graduated from Rogersville High School in 1965. After a stint in the Navy, He answered an ad for a correspondence art course; he said “You’ve seen the ads, draw Abe Lincoln”. Jim began the course and progressed through pencil, color pencil and ink. He said the GI bill was paying $50.00 per month for the training. He hit a snag when one lesson assignment was to draw a car. Jim said the example given was a cartoonish car with balloon tires. “I decided I would show them what a car should look like, Jim explained, and he sent in a more realistic drawing. The response to his drawing was that he should “stick to the basics”. Jim dropped the course but was sent a “letter of proficiency”. That is the extent of his formal training, though Jim maintains the course did teach him some things. Jim has always favored the automotive field. He said there are a lot of automotive artists and a lot of competition. He

does the artwork for 5-6 car shows per year, including some as far away as Pennsylvania. He also does artwork for other events, including around 26 years of Hawkins County Heritage Days. Jim worked for a time for a printing company, but has been a full-time artist for several years. He has a studio in his home. Other than cars, some of his favorite subjects are southwest related. He said “There’s just something about a guy on a horse out by himself, he sees the world different”. There have been many highlights in Jim’s career: While working at a screenprinter in Kingsport, there was a contest to design the first t-shirt for Dollywood. Jim’s design was chosen the winner. He would paint flames on a 1957 Chevy for display at a Dollywood diner several years later. He continues to do artwork for a Johnson City company that sells automotive products. Some of his work for this client has been displayed at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Jim has done artwork for the Hershey Corporation in Pennsylvania. Jim has a humble and philosophical attitude about his work: “The good Lord gave me the talent to draw these things, if he should take that away, I’ve had a good time with it.”

ROGERSVILLE -- The annual concert in Rogersville City Park may have fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic this year, but plans, at this point, are still on for the Fourth of July Parade through downtown, as well as the traditional fireworks display that evening (weather permitting for both events). The parade on Saturday will begin at 11 am, with lineup starting at 9:30 in the parking lot of East Rogersville Baptist Church. Call 423-272-2186 for more information. Organizers are hoping for a large turnout of parade participants and spectators to celebrate the 244th anniversary of American Independence. Reminder to exercise appropriate protocol with social distancing, proper hygiene and wear protective equipment when appropriate. Photos are from a previous year’s parade.
