Welcome to Rogersville’s 2016 4th of July Weekend A message from the 2016 Rogersville 4th of July Celebration Committee Welcome to Rogersville’s 2016 4th of July Celebration It was on July 2, 1776, that the gutsy Second Continental Congress voted to declare the nation free. Thomas Jefferson then composed a Declaration of Independence on July 4. It was further edited by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. In a personal letter to his wife Abigail, Adams wrote, “The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by

solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.” From this bold beginning, our nation of thirteen original ragtag colonies has grown to 52 states, one out in the ocean, the last two added in the lifetime of many of us living today. This is what we celebrate. Today we all are patriots. Today we all declare independence. It is our prayer, our hope, and our expectation you will enjoy your day in Rogersville.

Funding the Event The Rogersville 4th of July Celebration is paid for in its entirety by monetary contributions from sponsors and donors such as you. No Town of Rogersville or County of Hawkins cash is contributed to the event, although public works from both entities assure its success. If you enjoy the Celebration and have a generosity of spirit which enjoys seeing those who might not be able to participate if there were a charge for attendance, we welcome your contribution.

MARK DEWITTE

A note of Gratitude For many years Dr. Blaine Jones, former Rogersville alderman and vice mayor, and Mark DeWitte, current Rogersville alderman, have sacrificed countless hours with no pay and little praise to assure a day of celebration for any and all who wished to participate. On behalf of everyone who ever has enjoyed

the fruits of their efforts through the years, and with gratitude from the new committee for all the help you have given us this year, we sincerely thank you and wish you a very happy, stress free 4th of July. And the same goes for April and Ann!

In Memory

Charles Phillip Beal

Since the last Rogersville 4th of July Celebration, Rogersville has lost its best friend, Philip Beal, owner of WRGS Radio and citizen extraordinaire. Never was there a non profit happening, from the smallest bake sale or car wash, to the events that bring thousands to Rogersville, which Philip did not promote at no charge to the organization. Because of his unrivaled community service,

former County Executive Doug Price declared Philip Beal week. Philip would say teasingly, “Others have had a day of recognition. I have had an entire week.” He was a fixture at 4th celebrations, broadcasting in his warm, mellow voice, from the WRGS tent in the park. Our sincerest sympathies go out to his family, his friends, and this entire community. It is a loss we all share.

KAITLYN BAKER and BRAD PUCKETT

Singin’ Country, Celebratin’ Freedom!

East Tennessee native Brad Puckett, whose soon-to-be-released single, “Start your Engine” has been chosen by NASCAR as the racing group’s 2016 theme song, will headline the July 4 show. Opening for Puckett will be Kaitlyn Baker, an up-and-coming star who is best known for her hit song, “Coal Train”.

Kaitlyn Baker Singer, Songwriter, Storyteller Kaitlyn Baker’s music reflects the beauty of the Cumberland Mountains and ruggedness of the coal mining culture in which she was raised. Indeed, this 20-yearold singer/songwriter from Pound, Virginia, has been referred to as a new “coal miner’s daughter.” BuzzFeed called her “feisty” and named her one of 11 “badass alternatives to bro country.” With influences from Elvis to Loretta to The Beatles, Kaitlyn’s style is traditional country tinged with rock, blues and bluegrass. Her ballad “Coal Train,” which was inspired by her hometown, was included in the official 2015 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards ZinePak, alongside tracks by such superstars as Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Florida-Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and others. The 2-CD compilation debuted at #4 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums Chart and remained in the Top 10 for three consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn’s debut radio release, “Burn,” tells the story of a woman who won’t tolerate a cheating man. The single reached #54 on MusicRow’s Country Breakout Chart. It even inspired the creation of Kaitlyn Baker’s BURN Sauce, made by Pepper Palace in Sevierville, Tennessee, one of the world’s leading hot sauce producers.

M Monday, d July J l 4th h at 7:15 p.m. Like the sauce that bears her name, this gal is on fire! Kaitlyn’s new single “Heart of Appalachia” with background vocals from Larry Cordle and Val Storey, is the official theme song for tourism in Southwestern Virginia. The song pays tribute to the breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage of the Heart of Appalachia Region.1

Monday, July 4th at 8:15 p.m.

Kaitlyn has been performing professionally since she was a young girl, and has opened for several acclaimed artists including Travis Tritt, Billy Currington, Rhonda Vincent, Sammy Kershaw and others. She has performed from coast to coast, including House of Blues in Los Angeles and such iconic Nashville venues as Tootsie’s, Hard Rock Café, 3rd and Lindsley and 12th

and Porter. She also taped an episode of the nationally syndicated PBS television concert series “Song of the Mountains.” If she’s not in a Nashville recording studio, chances are you’ll find Kaitlyn at home in the country, playing with her dogs, riding horses or fishing. Then, all of a sudden,

Elevation 1255

Elevation 1255 is a classic rock/blues band based in east Tennessee. The group is the brainchild of Bob Dilk (keyboards & vocals) of Morristown. Originally from New Jersey, Bob came to the area with TRW. Bob first learned to play piano by ear and later learned to read music. He worked his way through college, picking up good money playing parties, clubs and weddings up until 1984 when other business interests forced him to curtail the weekend music. Bob says “ I had a wonderful time and learned a lot from some excellent local musicians. Turning 50 I felt the old need to Rock and roll again.” On his first day at TRW Rogersville. he met guitarist Randy Ball. Randy has spent many years playing guitar with his daughters in The Ball Sisters Band, having written several songs they recorded. When

Bob invited him to practice one night in October 2012, they found some common ground musically and began working on a diverse playlist. Steve Schipp also originally came to the area with TRW, where he met Bob and Randy. He grew up near Buffalo, New York and began playing guitar about 10 years ago and later added bass. He “escaped” from New York in 2012 and joined Elevation 1255 in the fall of 2013. Elevation 1255 released their self-titled debut CD in July 2014. Their music is widely available on the internet.

SoulShine

‘They literally can play it all.’ — Mike Ringley SoulShine is a band handpicked by Mike Ringley to play the whole range of music. To quote Ringley, “They literally can play it all.” The band consists of keyboardist Ringley who has opened for bands including Confederate Railroad, Brad Paisley, Audio Adrenalin, Skillet, the News Boys, Third Day, and 2012 Gibson Guitarist of the Year Bart Walker. Guitarist Rick Luster appeared on stage for the first time at age 7 when he played Wildwood Flower. He has opened for Charlie Daniels, Kansas, Jim Dandy, Darius Rucker, Candie Box, and others. Dwayne Morris, vocalist, first sang in 1988 in the Volunteer High School talent show where he placed first. Morris says this shocked even himself.

Morris sings the wide range of vocals the band likes to play. Drummer Todd Reynolds lives in Abingdon where he is known in the community as a family farmer, music mentor, restorer of vintage drums. He still has his first drum kit, a pristinely preserved mid 1970’s Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat. Tommy McConnell of Damascus has played the bass for 20 years. He is a member of the Virginia band Phantom and has played the same venues as Confederate Railroad.

Of One Accord Ministry:

Freedom from Hunger Drive Once again the Rogersville 4th of July Committee is partnering with Of One Accord and event attendees to provide non perishable food items for three food pantries in Hawkins and Hancock Counties. Food pantries in this area have high demand because of unemployment and low wages. The average income in Hawkins County is less than $18,000 annually. In the summer months when school is out, children here where we live are hungry. Many of them have breakfast and lunch at school, but when school is out for summer, food can be unavailable for many. Countless studies show children living with hunger and

malnourishment do not receive nutrients essential to growth and development during critical years and may be dramatically affected the remainder of their lives. Additionally, lack of food brings with it a set of health problems. It is thought 1 in 5 American children get in bed at night hungry. As you plan your day at the Park, please stop by the store and pick up some food items which would be filling, nutritious, and delicious to children. Rita Jones, Community Nutrition Program Director for Of One Accord Ministries will have a tent immediately to the left at the East entrance to City Park where the food will be collected and distributed. Jones said, “We love all the children we reach through our summer food ministry, but there is an especially touching situation with a lot of little children in one of the trailer parks we call on. They are so happy to see us. It’s very rewarding work.”

Celebrating FREEDOM! through the years...

The nation’s independence always has been celebrated in Rogersville. Vintage photos courtesy of Tennessee Books & Autographs show the century old Independence Day Flower Parade down Main Street. Parades traditionally have taken place with varying activities held the remainder of the day. In the 1950’s civic clubs sponsored horse shows on the ball field of what now is Rogersville Middle School. When Hawkins County Memorial Hospital was built, their Pink Ladies initiated the Miss Independence Day beauty pageant. In years following the musical performances and fireworks shows were developed and moved to Rogersville City Park. This year’s parade is being organized by Rogersville Main Street under the direction of Melissa Nelson. Contact her at melissa.dawson.nelson@gmail.com for entry information.
