Welcome to Rogersville’s 2017 4th of July Weekend A message from the 2017 Rogersville 4th of July Celebration Committee Welcome to Rogersville’s 2017 4th of July Celebration It was on July 2, 1776, that the gutsy Second Continental Congress voted to declare the nation free. Thomas Jefferson then composed a Declaration of Independence on July 4. It was further edited by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. In a personal letter to his wife Abigail, Adams wrote, “The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by

solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever.” From this bold beginning, our nation of thirteen original ragtag colonies has grown to 52 states, one out in the ocean, the last two added in the lifetime of many of us living today. This is what we celebrate. Today we all are patriots. Today we all declare independence. It is our prayer, our hope, and our expectation you will enjoy your day in Rogersville.

Funding the Event The Rogersville 4th of July Celebration is paid for in its entirety by monetary contributions from sponsors and donors such as you. No Town of Rogersville or County of Hawkins cash is contributed to the event, although public works from both entities assure its success. If you enjoy the Celebration and have a generosity of spirit which enjoys seeing those who might not be able to participate if there were a charge for attendance, we welcome your contribution.

Restless Heart and Brad Puckett to perform in Rogersville’s 4th of July Celebration

With more than 25 “Top 40” hits stretching back to its first Billboard-charted single in 1985, the band Restless Heart has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in country music history, thrilling fans with blockbuster songs that are now considered country classics, such as “The Bluest Eyes in Texas”, “Wheels”, “That Rock Won’t Roll”, “I’ll Still Be Loving You”, “A Tender Lie”, and “Why Does it Have to Be Wrong or Right”. With six consecutive #1 hits under its belt, four of the group’s albums have been certified ‘Gold’ by the RIAA, and it has won dozens of awards from many organizations – including the Academy of Country Music for Top Vocal Group of the Year -in addition to receiving six Grammy, and multiple CMA nominations. The band was invited to perform at the inauguration in January of President Donald Trump. Members of Rogersville’s Fourth of July Committee are thrilled that Restless Heart has accepted the group’s invitation to bring its fast-paced, crowd-pleasing show to the stage at Rogersville’s City Park for the annual Independence Day concert and spectacular fireworks show afterward. Committee members said they wanted to get back to the long-standing tradition, set in place by now-retired former Co-Chairmen, Dr. Blaine Jones and Mark DeWitte, of bringing respected, accomplished and nationally-known entertainers with a solid string of hit songs to perform at the annual concert, which has, in previous years, attracted crowds of more than 20,000 people. Fans will remember that Restless Heart’s other “chart” singles include, among others, “(Back to the) Heartbreak Kid”, “I Want Everyone to Cry”, “Let the Heartache Ride”, “Big Dreams in a Small Town”, “Say What’s in Your Heart”, “Dancy’s Dream”, “Mending

Tuesday, July 4th at 8 p.m. Fences”, and “No End to this Road”. The band’s album, “Wheels”, was the #1 country album of 1986. Restless Heart is unique in that even though the band is celebrating its 34th anniversary in 2017, it still retains all five of its original members, so the “sound” that people will hear “live” on July 4 is performed by the same vocalists and musicians that fans remember from their hit recordings. Whitney Carr

Whitney Carr will once again emcee the Rogersville 4th of July celebration. A Rogersville native, she is the host of ‘VIPSeen Live!’, a livestream entertainment show which broadcasts on major social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube & Twitter. A new division of VIPSeen Magazine, ‘VIPSeen Live’ shows you inside area events, businesses and local fun LIVE as they are happening. She and her co-host, Morgan King, are well known in our region from their former TV show, ‘Good Day Tri-Cities’. ‘Unfortunately the TV station sold our channel to another network and that network does not broadcast any local shows so ‘Good Day Tri-Cites’ came to an end in Feb’. said Carr.’ ‘Morgan and I were hired by VIPSeen the day after our last show aired. God definitely had a hand in it’. ‘Social media is where most people are now getting their news, entertainment and daily updates, says Carr. We are excited to be the first livestream show of our kind in this entire region.’ Whitney is a 1989 graduate of Cherokee High School and grew up in Rogersville. ‘When I was in grade school at Rogersville City, I got in trouble a lot for talking’, laughs Carr. Now I’m making a

living out of talking’, she smiles.’ Years ago my days as a cheerleader in high school and member of the Thespian Club gave me a platform to perform which I always enjoyed. I later studied Criminal Justice at WSCC but never pursued that as a career. I got married to my husband Junior, in 1993 and moved to Johnson City. Since then I’ve had 3 kids and 25+ jobs in my lifetime. Each job has given me life skills and experiences which I utilize in my current job as a talk show host. I feel that I can connect with most people in one way or another. ‘ I am a graduate of Leadership Hawkins County class of 2013. ‘It’s an honor to be asked back to emcee the 4th celebration in Rogersville. My father, Wayne Allen, designed the Rogersville 4th logo and served on the committee for many years. I’m forever connected with my hometown and can promise you that we will present another fun, entertaining show this year! It’s the place to be in Tennessee!’

Elevation 1255 Elevation 1255 is a classic rock/blues band based in east Tennessee. The group is the brainchild of Bob Dilk (keyboards & vocals) of Morristown. Originally from New Jersey, Bob came to the area with TRW. Bob first learned to play piano by ear and later learned to read music. He worked his way through college, picking up good money playing parties, clubs and weddings up until 1984 when other business interests forced him to curtail the weekend music. Bob says “ I had a wonderful time and learned a lot from some excellent local musicians. Turning 50 I felt the old need to Rock and roll again.” On his first day at TRW Rogersville. he met guitarist Randy Ball. Randy has spent many years playing guitar with his daughters in The Ball Sisters Band, having written several songs they recorded. When

Bob invited him to practice one night in October 2012, they found some common ground musically and began working on a diverse playlist. Steve Schipp also originally came to the area with TRW, where he met Bob and Randy. He grew up near Buffalo, New York and began playing guitar about 10 years ago and later added bass. He “escaped” from New York in 2012 and joined Elevation 1255 in the fall of 2013. Drummer Rich Owens joined the group in early 2017. He has played for over 50 years with many groups including Exodus, Johnny Echo, Steel Wheels, Ragtops and Stages. He lives in Nickelsville, Virginia. Elevation 1255 released their self-titled debut CD in July 2014. Their music is widely available on the internet.

Fireworks!

The Perfect Ending to the 4th of July The citizens’ favorite part of the 4th of July Celebration seems to be the fireworks display which lasts almost a half hour and can be seen for miles around. Living in this small town are the owners of the big business, Dynamic Effects and Fireworks Company. Bob and Julie Smith have created shows for the Orange Bowl, the NFL Pro Bowl, MotorCross, SuperCross, the Miami Heat, the Nuclear Cowboyz, and the Rogersville 4th of July Celebration

at City Park. The Smiths have been major sponsors of the event for a decade, matching dollar for dollar the amount the 4th of July Committee raises for fireworks. This year’s accompanying soundtrack will be created by Dr. Blaine Jones. It is the wish of the Committee and the Smiths each citizen will enjoy the show, either at the Park, or from the comfort of home. Thanks to the donors!

Celebrating FREEDOM! through the years...

The nation’s independence always has been celebrated in Rogersville. Vintage photos courtesy of Tennessee Books & Autographs show the century old Independence Day Flower Parade down Main Street. Parades traditionally have taken place with varying activities held the remainder of the day. In the 1950’s civic clubs sponsored horse shows on the ball field of what now is Rogersville Middle School. When Hawkins County Memorial Hospital was built, their Pink Ladies initiated the Miss Independence Day beauty pageant. In years following the musical performances and fireworks shows were developed and moved to Rogersville City Park. This year’s parade is under the direction of Melissa Nelson. Contact her at melissa. dawson.nelson@gmail.com or call, 423-293-4272, for entry information.

Of One Accord Ministry:

Freedom from Hunger Drive Once again the Rogersville 4th of July Committee is partnering with Of One Accord and event attendees to provide non perishable food items for three food pantries in Hawkins and Hancock Counties. Food pantries in this area have high demand because of unemployment and low wages. The average income in Hawkins County is less than $18,000 annually. In the summer months when school is out, children here where we live are hungry. Many of them have breakfast and lunch at school, but when school is out for summer, food can be unavailable for many.

Countless studies show children living with hunger and malnourishment do not receive nutrients essential to growth and development during critical years and may be dramatically affected the remainder of their lives. Additionally, lack of food brings with it a set of health problems. It is thought 1 in 5 American children get in bed at night hungry. As you plan your day at the Park, please stop by the store and pick up some food items which would be filling, nutritious, and delicious to children. Rita Jones, Community Nutrition Program Director for Of One Accord Ministries

will have a tent immediately to the left at the East entrance to City Park where the food will be collected and distributed. Jones said, “We love all the children we reach through our summer food ministry, but there is an especially touching situation with a lot of little children in one of the trailer parks we call on. They are so happy to see us. It’s very rewarding work.”

On your way to the park on Tuesday, July 4th, make plans to bring some canned goods or a monetary donation to help Of One Accord Ministry restock their food pantries. Your donation will help many your neighbors in need!
