ome improvement projects ramp up when the weather warms up, as homeowners channel the rejuvenating feelings of spring and tackle their home to-do lists. Large-scale renovations can greatly affect a home, but smaller projects can yield impressive results. Home renovations do not need to take weeks or months. Many projects can be completed in an afternoon or over the course of a weekend. If time is of the essence, these weekend or one-day projects may satisfy homeowners’ desires to fix up their homes.

Create an accent wall. Painting a focal wall in a home can create a serious impact. The bonus is it will not take as long or require as many materials as painting an entire room. Accent walls frequently feature a bold color, so decide on placement and tackle this project in less than a day.

How to HANG PHOTOS and ARTWORK with ease

ersonal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. The first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57”, as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums. When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal. There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork

side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire, or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top. Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

More than ever before, homeowners are choosing improvement projects geared toward making their homes healthier. Establishing a healthy home means different things to different people. For example, to an environmentalist, a healthy home may incorporate eco-friendly or green products. To those with young children or mobility-impaired seniors, a healthy home may be one free from potential hazards. Others may view a healthy home as one that alleviates allergies. The World Health Organizations says inadequate housing conditions, such as poor ventilation, radon, urban pollution, and moisture issues, can contribute to many preventable diseases and injuries — especially respiratory problems, nervous system disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Furthermore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air quality as a top five environmental risk to public health. EPA studies have found that indoor air pollution levels were roughly two

to five times greater than outdoor pollution levels. People interested in making their homes healthier can embrace these renovations and lifestyle changes. Be aware of furniture materials. Toxic PBDEs, which are chemicals used as flame retardants on furniture fabrics produced prior to 2006, can send toxins into the air. Check or

replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. • Have your heating system, water heater and any gas, or coal burning appliances serviced by a qualified technician annually. • Have your chimney checked and cleaned every year. Chimneys can be blocked by debris and cause CO to build up inside your home. • Have a mechanic check the exhaust system of your vehicle every year. CLOGGED DRAIN

ome plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as it should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water in a snap. But when a clog is present in a system, water can quickly back up. There are various techniques to clear clogged drains. Minor clogs may be cleared without the help of a plumber or even any tools. More significant blockages will require more elbow grease. The first step to clearing a clog is to locate the problem. Drainage issues that affect a particular sink or toilet may be isolated to that fixture. Clogs that are present throughout the house may be indicative of a larger problem in the plumbing that is directing waste away from the house and into the sewer system. Sometimes a clog can be freed by pouring boiling hot water or a combination of baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If that doesn’t help, move on to a plunger. By creating pressure within the pipes, a plunger can dislodge whatever is causing the backup. If the clog seems to be further down the drain, hair or grime may have become trapped. An auger, often referred to as a “plumber’s snake,” can be inserted into the drain to remove the grime and free up the water flow. Homeowners without access to an auger can try to fish the clog out of the drain with a wire hanger. If clogs cannot be alleviated, drain traps may need to be accessed. Those who do not know their way around pipes and wrenches should hire a professional.

eighborhood watch programs can provide communities with a sense of security while serving as a low-cost deterrent to crime. The National Crime Prevention Council even notes that watch groups can serve as a stepping stone to community revitalization. Establishing a neighborhood watch program is no small task. Such programs are most effective when the entire community lends its support and participates. Men and women hoping to start watch programs in their communities can consider the following strategies, courtesy of the NCPC. Getting started Gathering neighbors and fellow community members to gauge levels of interest and discuss the challenges ahead is a great first step toward establishing a neighborhood watch program. Before hosting your first meeting, contact the local police or sheriff’s department and ask if an officer or deputy can attend the meeting and provide insight. When planning the initial meeting, give fellow residents ample notice and choose a location that’s easily accessible to all. At this initial meeting, discuss the purpose of the program and ask fellow community members how willing they are to participate, including how much time they can realistically devote. Moving forward Once the decision has been made to start a program, organizers can then ask for men and women to serve as block captains. Block captains will be responsible for disseminating information about the program to their neighbors, keeping them up-to-date on any crime or issues in the neighborhood as well. Captains also will serve as liaisons between the community and local law enforcement. Men and women who volunteer to serve as block captains should devise a regular way to communicate with fellow watch members and residents. Email can be effective and easy, but keep in mind that older residents may prefer phone calls or direct contact.

Once community members have agreed to participate, organizers and block captains can create maps that highlight the homes of group members, including their phone numbers and/or email addresses as well. Working with law enforcement The cooperation of law enforcement can be considerable for neighborhood watch organizers. Speak with local agencies, asking if they provide training for watch programs. Such training may teach observation techniques and offer suggestions on reporting crimes. Some local law enforcement agencies may even provide community members with neighborhood watch signs that participating households can post in their yards. Such signs can serve as a deterrent to prospective criminals and potentially help community members in distress. It’s important that neighborhood watch programs also discuss vigilantism with local law enforcement agencies. Neighborhood watch participants should never take the law into their own hands. Block captains should emphasize to members that the point of the watch is to observe and alert.

Banish MOSQUITOES from your yard

omeowners can employ several measures to prevent mosquitoes from invading their backyards this spring and summer. • Remove standing water. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can breed in bird baths, pets’ water bowls and empty plant pots that collect rain water. Routinely tipping these items and refilling them with fresh water can prevent mosquito infestations, protecting both humans and pets alike. • Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean gutters during spring and summer. • Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed. • Use fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay. • Use citronella candles or torches are an effective mosquito deterrent. Place torches around your patio but find somewhere other than the dining table to place citronella candles if you decide to use them.

hen young children are part of a household, homeowners may benefit by designing yards that are both functional and fun. Incorporating safe play areas for kids is one way to unlock the potential of both big and small backyards. As children run off to enjoy a playground, safety is the last thing on their minds. Kids are most interested in scaling ladders to tree-houses or coasting down slides. That’s why adults must take it upon themselves to keep injury prevention in mind. SafestPlayground.com indicates that playground-related injuries routinely result in severe fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. In the majority of playground injuries to children younger than age 5, the head and face are affected. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 experience more leg and arm injuries than younger kids. When considering playground equipment for the yard, parents need to make safety a priority.

• Surface: Parents should assume that children will fall. To lessen the blow of falls, choose playground equipment with a perimeter of six feet of a softer surface, such as sand, pea gravel, rubber pieces or wood chips. This material should be between six and 12 inches deep. • Structure: The structure of the play equipment should be built from sturdy materials. Pressure-treated lumber was once the standard, but it’s not advisable for kids’ playgrounds, as the chemicals used in the lumber can leach and young children may actually bite or pick at the wood. Use cedar or another wood that resists decay. Once the structure is built, inspect it frequently for damage. • Site: Look around the landscape for an ideal place to locate the playset. There should be no obstacles that children can hit while sliding or swinging. Avoid overhanging branches and do not place equipment too close to trees or fencing. hile it’s important for pets like dogs and even some cats to get some time outdoors, pet owners should recognize the potential threats to pet health looming in their lawns and gardens. • Mulch: According to the Pet Poison Helpline (PPH), mulch made from cocoa beans can pose a threat to pets. This type of mulch is made of discarded hulls or shells of the cocoa bean. These byproducts of chocolate production contain varying concentrations of the toxins theobromine and caffeine. When ingested in high concentrations, these toxins can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, and, in some instances, death. The amount of these toxins present in a given batch of this type of mulch may not be readily known, so homeowners should avoid applying it. • Slug and snail baits: The active ingredient in slug and snail baits is metaldehyde, which is highly poisonous to cats and dogs. Symptoms of distress, including
