appy Spring to all of you! If you are like me it is a welcoming sight! It seems I have been cooped up inside for way too long and I am ready for warmer weather where I can get outside and enjoy it . It also means it is the time for all of our bigger spring and summer events . Rodeos, team ropings, barrel races, the ones we enjoy all year are coming fast and I hope you all are geared up and ready for them .

On to other new! The Big ticket in Tunica was a huge event for those East of the Mississippi, as well as many who traveled from other states across the big muddy river to attend . The event increased in size this year and John Johnson was excited to see new faces come and rope . The JX2 event was one of the biggest of the year . Signs of The Big Ticket and other events are on the rise . This is good news for the industry . More ropers, larger payouts and bigger events! I can’t wait to see them unfold this year . Lastly, I’d like to welcome a few new inclusions in the magazine . The first one is that we are partnering with the Jr . NFR and hoping to help them grow . Going into their second year, the Jr . NFR will welcome the best of the best to Las Vegas this year to compete in what many believe will be one of the largest youth rodeo events in the country . We are excited to be a part of this and will keep you all updated on the future of the JR . NFR . Be sure to check out their new section in the magazine for details . Also new in this issue and in the future will be the NTRL Finals in Review . The NTRL Finals is one of the largest team roping events in the country and we look forward to recognizing the winners throughout the year in the magazine . Be sure to check out the #8 Shoot-Out Champions, Cole and Luke LeMaster in this issue . I’m out of room again for this month and looking forward to putting this issue to bed and get outside to rope and enjoy the warmer weather . Hope you are too . Until Next Time... Dirt, Keep it under your feet!

The big news is the recent Patriot event in Fort Worth, Texas . You can find all of the winners and details inside this issue . Of course there has been a lot of discussion about the event since it ended, and I have to say that it seems like overall the event was well reviewed . There is always some unconstructive talk after events and it seems the larger the event the more this is resounded . One thing I have found over my two decades of watching team ropings come and go is that the pessimistic discussions are always the loudest and those who enjoyed the event are usually silent . With that in mind though I talked with Kevin and Andrea Hall from The Patriot after watching what they did immediately following the event . This included a survey to all competitors and discussions with ropers and producers about how to continue to grow and make The Patriot better . With any type of a large event such as the patriot, which is only in its third year, there are and will be growing pains . Although they seem to stick out like a sore thumb, they are actually a good sign of growth and The Patriot is examining those that were noticeable and making changes in the future . This includes ways to decrease contestants stress, raise payouts, increase the excitement and to work with others in the industry to continue to grow the event in a positive way for everyone involved . Be sure to watch future issues for the many ways The Patriot is going to make changes to the 2018 event in Fort Worth .

SRA RODEO SCHEDULE SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR OFFICERS & BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The current board of directors is seeking suggestions for five (5) potential new board members as well as presidential and vice-presidential candidates who will serve two-year terms. Nominees must be members in good standing and must not have been fined or suspended during a three year period immediately preceding nomination. The term for President Strawberry Pruitt, Vice-President Brad Stewart and Board of Directors - Brian Barefoot, Bradley Bullard, Jake Leonard, Thomas Linton and Matt McGee will expire this year leaving Chet Kidd, Jake Willcox and Jamie Ellsworth to complete another year as board of directors. Officers and board members are asked to participate in regularly scheduled conference calls, respond to text/email communications dealing with pertinent issues, as well as attend board meetings held during SFR and any other time of the year as deemed necessary. They are also expected to serve on committees as needed, to participate in the planning and operation of the finals rodeo (SFR) and to perform any other duties necessary to ensure the success of the association. Officers and board members will serve without salary. A complimentary membership for the following rodeo season will be issued at the completion of each year of service. If you know an eligible SRA member who can honor the above commitments, please submit their name, contact information and a short paragraph stating why this person would be a good candidate. (And, yes, you may suggest yourself!) While we will not be able to nominate all individuals submitted, your input will help the current board prepare a ballot of excellent candidates to present for vote by the full membership at the SFR in November. Send information by email to: sraoffice@ aol.com or postal mail to: SRA, PO Box 669, Four Oaks NC 27524 no later than July 31, 2017.
RULE CHANGE PROPOSALS The SRA is currently accepting proposals for new rules and rule changes which would be effective for the 2018 rodeo season. #8 Shoot-Out Champions (Total Cash Event Payout - $47,520) Cole Lemaster / Luke LeMaster Cash payout - $12,950 Prizes - Cactus Saddles - Gist Buckles
T
he 2016 NTRL season-ending Finals event in Jacksonville, Florida held an astonishing conclusion for a couple of youngsters. The #8 NTRL National Champions, Cole and Luke LeMaster from Gaffney, SC are a great example of where the sport is heading. Cole who is 13-years old and Luke who is 11-years old took control of the roping and finished ahead of the pack with a four-head total of 42.3-seconds. The brothers took home just under $13,000, plus part of the $140,000 prize line that included Cactus trophy saddles and Gist buckles. “The NTRL Finals was fun!” said Cole. “It was the first year we went and it was fun being a part of it all. The best part of it was winning it with my brother.” Cole’s brother elaborated on the event as well. “I liked competing against everybody; It was fun,” said Luke. “John put on a great roping. It was organized, our stalls were ready when we got there, all we had to do is get up and rope. It was also exciting to win it with my brother.” The LeMaster brothers did more than just win the #8 Shoot-Out. In all, they took home $19,000 from the event. Their father, Josh said, “They did really well. I only won about $2,000, so they out did me. They want to rodeo all summer so I guess we will use their winnings for fees.” No doubt the NTRL Finals was a big weekend for Cole and Luke, as well as their proud father. The team has been roping together for about 5 years. They plan to continue to rope together at the Jr. High School events and all of the NTRL and USTRC events that come up this year. You can bet they said they will be back in Florida next January as well for another taste of the great NTRL Finals and all of the good times and fun!

THE PATRIOT EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS
F
ort Worth in February was once again captivating! Not only did RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo offer an exceptional event that held the interest of the rodeo community, but the following week hosted The Patriot, The Richest Combined Equine Event! The event played tribute to what has said to be the largest equine event in the history of the city. Team ropers, barrel racers, tie-down ropers and mounted shooters filled the Will Rogers Memorial center in Fort Worth for a week-long event tht was second to none! “The facility told me that this is the largest attended horse event they have ever had,” said producer Kevin Hall. “We have had overwhelming support across the board, in all of the events. It truly has exceeded our expectations.” Examining the number of contestants that turned out, there is no question The Patriot surpassed everyone’s expectations. Barrel racers blasted through the arena vying for part of the events huge payout. The tie-down roping also finished well above where they expected. Tie-down and breakaway

ropers nodded their head in search of the big payouts throughout the week. Mounted shooters were also on hand and shot their way toward victories and payouts in their event. The team roping was nothing short of spectacular. Ropers filled the arena each day and fiercely competed for their share of the huge payouts. Over 1.6 -Million in cash was awarded throughout the week in the team roping alone, not to mention a prize line that is second to none, raising the bar and setting a new milestone for the event! Win it came to payouts, The Patriot winners were showered with greenbacks! A total of 3-million in cash was paid out over the course of the week in Fort Worth. In the team roping, the Patriot #12 topped the payout mark this year. A total of $250,760 was paid to the winners of the event. The #11 Patriot paid a total of $244,800, while the #10 Patriot paid out $238,820. The #9 Patriot paid a total of $207,240, the #13 Patriot paid a total of $155,680, the #8 Patriot paid $109,500 and the #15 Patriot paid out $70,600. The Specialty roping topped the

This does not include the Patriot Preliminary events that paid almost $100,000 throughout the week! Not only did The Patriot top everyone’s outlook, the event captivated the attention of the sport for the entire week. Ropers, racers and all in attendance were in the center of the spotlight! All eyes turned towards Fort Worth to see if The Patriot, in its third year would be able to surpass the high mark they set over previous years. The event did and with new champions to add to the Patriot “Wall of Champions,” there is already a countdown towards next year’s event. Be sure to stay in touch with The Patriot throughout the year as they hand out qualifications to next year’s event at USTRC Gold Plus events, as well as qualifier ropings throughout the year!

MECHANICAL or RELATIONAL?
of the
By Crystal Lyons
I
t’s an awesome thing to learn how God wants us to operate. Scripture says in more than one place that God’s people are often destroyed because of a lack of knowledge. God WANTS us to know HOW to bring His good will for us into our situations of life. But KNOWING “how to” should NEVER trump being relational. For instance....someone wants prayer for an ailment in their body and you have learned to claim healing scriptures so you instantly start moving in the principles of what you’ve learned....never stopping to ASK The Lord what He wants to reveal about this situation. Without realizing it, we just placed mechanics OVER relationship. It’s wonderful and needful to learn principles, but there’s a danger to make principles a FORMULA. We LOVE our formulas don’t we!! Let me put this in horse and rider terms: You have a colt that you’re just starting on barrels. At first that colt is listening intently to all that you’re doing. Bending, yielding, pausing, changing leads....etc. After a while
and the colt begins to recognize the pattern. THEN.....inevitably.....that colt that USED to rely on you telling him what to do goes, “ohhhhh, I got it!!” and starts running the pattern on their own, kinda turning a deaf ear to the instructions of his rider. Just because the colt has learned the basic barrel pattern does NOT negate the need for his rider!! He THINKS he knows what to do, but in reality, he can’t do it accurately without the one who taught him what he now knows!
Get it? We do that same thing with God! We NEED to learn! We MUST learn! But learning principles NEVER negates the need of listening to the Master!

Principles were never meant to replace being RELATIONAL. No matter how much we know.....knowledge can never replace a daily friendship with the Creator. I’m beginning to realize how often I’ve been just like that half trained colt on barrels. I’ve waaaay too many times, grabbed the bit as I ran head on into a situation, thinking I know just what to do! “I got this God!” Yeah....right....what a dipstick! How often I’ve sweated over trying to figure out “how to get God to move” in a situation or how to find a “formula” that will release miracles into this earth’s atmosphere, instead of just wanting to hang out with Jesus and be His friend! Miracles will be an automatic result of friendship with God. We can also do the same thing when it comes to learning scripture. We MUST learn scripture, but as Graham Cooke so aptly said....”some people think God wrote a book and then lost His voice!” God still speaks!! To YOU!! Don’t simply learn scripture as a replacement for hearing His voice!! Relationship....friendship with God is THE most important thing we can develop! Don’t just grab the bit and run into the arena thinking you know the game.....allow the Supreme Wise One to hold the reins and direct your steps!
becoming a team roper. As the years went by I realized that the NFR was probably not in my future. That did not keep me from being obsessed with the sport. I soon began competing and had some success. As a person who wants more s an individual I’ve never been out of life each day then the day before, I one to start something and only started looking for ways to become more do it halfway. This led to other until I accomplish what I want out of the experience. Some things I start just to say endeavors through other producers and people in the industry. Years of traveling I’ve done it, some to make money, some and meeting people involved in the roping things have led from fun to a career. industry led me to my second career. By Stuart Mitchell time is what am I “all in” with? Am I following the path that I’m supposed to? Am I putting too much time into things that don’t benefit my family? The older I get the more I pay attention to the things I’m involved in and the people I’m around. Although my emphasis has changed from competing at roping to the business side, I still love to practice and ride a good young horse. Also these days I like working with border collies. I also like to just relax sometimes. I don’t know how many things a person can be “all in” with at one time. I think that balance is key. God should come first then family, friends, your job then maybe your hobby. Sometimes it’s easy to get these in reverse. Every once in a while I have to evaluate whether or not my list is in reverse. I can’t really speak for anyone else but I do know that when my “all in” list is in the right order things seem to go a little smoother, and when the bumps come along in life they don’t seem to hit quite as hard. Advice is free so if you listen it doesn’t cost you anything and if you don’t, well, it still doesn’t. My advice is to find your “all in” list and work to keep it in order. And enjoy life, It’s the only one you get!

I
ey everybody! I hope everything is going well in your neck of the woods. March 11-12, my mom, dad, and I H hosted a special needs youth turkey hunt. We had three families come which included six kids come join us! One boy named Seth harvested a jake, and many of the other hunters saw some turkeys. Philip Vanderpool, Clint
Schwach, and Colton Good with The Virtue joined us to film! We can’t thank them enough for coming. The weekend resulted in great memories, one turkey, a whole stringer of crappie, and new friends! I am so blessed to live the life I do. Besides the hunt, the AHSRA held a rodeo in Montgomery, Alabama in the Garrett Coliseum. Saturday’s theme was red, white, and blue; Sunday was green for Cerebral Palsy Awareness! Most importantly, I thank God for allowing the whole weekend to be such a success and for the opportunities He presents to me! God bless, Miss Hannah Rogers
t is the time of year for ropers everywhere to gather up the horses, knock the long hair off and begin the quest of the season’s events. Although team roping has become a year-round sport for many, spring temperatures and the warmer weather often gives us some sort of renewed quest towards setting goals and looking for events to enter. However, that is the last step in the sport and in order to be successful, you have to get in the practice pen. This is where it comes together and gives you the momentum to become a champion inside the arena. Bret Beach at TotalTeamRoping.com has quite a bit to say about practice. He has had the opportunity to witness the practice routines of many different ropers who are taking the opportunity to use the new Video Coaching at TotalTeamRoping. com. Beside Bret, ropers can get direct feedback from their practice routines from Clay O’brien and Charles Pogue using these coaching videos. “I see a lot of ropers do the right thing inside the practice pen,” Bret said. “However, there are some who need to be
Practice With A Purpose
reminded that they need to make quality runs in the practice pen that are repetitive and helpful to them and their horse. The practice pen is the foundation of their roping and this foundation translates to events.”
When practicing, a team should prepare for the goals they have set. This may be for the next event, or for the season. In either case, ropers should be aware that what they do in the practice pen does affect how they do at the next roping. “Ropers need to practice the groundwork of what they can do time and time and time and time again,” Bret added. “Making quality runs sets the foundation for you and your horse. Think of it this way. If your horse is at 100% and drops 20% at an event because of the noise and the atmosphere of the event, you are still in good shape at 80%. Now think that if your horse is only at 70% because you have not set the foundation of a solid pattern inside the practice pen. Take 20% off that and you re 50%. Now you are not in a very good place to be successful.” Bret said it is also a good idea to practice
with your partner.
“It is even better if you and your partner can practice and set goals together,” he added. “Don’t go and make two good practice runs and then come back and try to go at the next three in a row. Duplicate what you can do and progress from there. The best of the best do this. They go and make solid run, time and time again. They sometimes rope 30 to 50 steers straight up. Not being fast, just working on the foundation and doing everything right, every time. They produce controlled runs every time, their horses score well, and everything just clicks on all cylinders every time. Nothing fast, but the foundation is set and when it is time to be fast at an event they just speed it up.” As the spring flowers begin to bloom, so can your roping. Be consistent inside the practice pen and set the foundation you need to become a winner this year. Be sure to log in to your TotalTeamRoping. com account and pick up a few tips, or send in a video for the professionals to take a look at and help you progress to the next step in your development inside the arena.

Memphis Challenge T
One to Remember
he Memphis Challenge rodeo is organized for multiple High School teams to compete and challenge their talents. This event is always a great time for all and like the name implies a true challenge! This year’s event was hosted at the Show Place Arena in Memphis, Tennessee on March 10-11. Kent Holt from the hosting High School Rodeo Association (Tennessee) summed up the event, “It was a good weekend. There was five different states represented and the

rodeo ran smooth. There was a lot of good cowboys and cowgirls there competing.” This year’s Memphis Challenge was special to the host high school. As a team, they took home the top honors of winning team. This has been a long time coming. “It was the first time in many years Tennessee took home the championships thanks to all of the great contestants of the Tennessee High School Rodeo Association,” Kent added.
It has been over 10 years since the Tennessee High School team won the event. It took the entire team to compete hard to help earn the title this year. The Tennessee cowboys and cowgirls filled the top spots in almost every event, winning the bareback riding, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, tie-down roping and the barrel racing. Congratulations to Team Tennessee and to all of the great young rodeo talent that competed at this year’s Memphis Challenge!

was doing a clinic the other day, and I had a young student that was under the impression that by coming to my two day school he was going to have calf roping figured out. I do feel like it is very beneficial to get quality instruction, but if you think for a second that you are going to be able to soak up the secrets to success in 2 days with any endeavor you are mistaken. I love when I see a student asking questions, taking notes, or a parent videoing because I know they are planning to take my information and knowledge to their practice pen. One of the most profound things that has ever been revealed to me is, there is no substitute for quality time spent. If you want to be successful at something, expect to spend an extremely large
amount of time doing it. It tells us in the Bible, “in all your getting, get understanding.” The way you get understanding is to take information and knowledge, add your time, equals understanding.
this highlight, but it’s the time that they spent with the basics we don’t see. They had to spend countless hours on the basics to be able to perform “highlight worthy” feats.
I love Sports Center, but a lot of times we don’t really have an understanding of what it takes to get a 5 second clip on Sports Center. All of the blood, sweat, tears, and time spent , by not only the athlete, but his family, friends, coaches, and even other competitors can never be fully seen. We watch the clip and get instant gratification watching our team or Individual succeed as if it’s our own success.
How many calves did NFR contestants tie in 7 and 8 in the practice pen consistently, before they were able to tie one in 6 at the NFR.
It takes a great play or move to get
A fan wants to jump right to the spectacular play. A true player wants to be able to perfect the basics until they are 2nd nature. Are you a player or a fan? Until next time, God Bless and I’ll see you down the line.

s always I try to find topics that seemed to keep coming up to write about. This month is no exception. I have found this month’s topic seems to be an issue over and over. I have had clients with major medical claims in the past several months that were not exactly sure of the process. So let’s get to it! First and foremost get your equine friend some attention through your veterinarian. It could possibly be a veterinarian that you have to use while on the road. Once you have your horse settled in your policy comes with an information card. Ours happens to be Neon Pink colored so it’s easy to find. This card will give you an emergency phone number for 24hr service. Call the 24hr emergency number and provide all the information that they request. From this point is where most seemed to forget to keep the adjuster informed of what the veterinarian is doing or what the veterinarian wants to do. For this article we are also assuming this is a nonlife threatening issue. A more lameness related injury or problem. From an insurance stand point some things have to be approved before doing the procedure or they could possibly be denied. Make sure the Vet you’re seeing understands this. Honestly most do not do this. The client wants everything done to have the equine friend fixed as good as new. I am a horse owner as well so yes I understand this! Yet we have to understand the underwriter has to be made aware of what procedures are being used. The best thing to do is talk with the vet and relay the information to the adjuster. A lot of cases the adjuster will talk directly to the veterinarian you just have to make certain that this is happening. IF you do this it will save a lot of unanswered questions as to why you have some things being paid for or some things not being paid for. Most veterinarians also know this. Equine Major Medical works no different than health insurance on yourself. You normally wouldn’t go to a hospital for a procedure without having a provider know what is taking place. Same with horse insurance. Some things a veterinarian wants to do may or may not be covered. If you ask the adjuster before a procedure is performed you won’t have a charge from the vet. If it’s a covered procedure have it completed. You know it should be paid under your policy due to you asking or getting approval before hand. Doing this will help your horse, it will get your claim closed faster, and with it closed a check for reimbursement. The key to having major medical claims go smoothly is communication between you, the vet, and the adjuster. As always read your policy. It should state basic things that are covered and excluded under a major medical policy. I have said it before go over the policy so that you understand what is covered and or excluded. It is the insured responsibility to know it. If you don’t know ask your agent. Call and have them pull the file and go over your specific policy. While they all may be similar each is individually written for your specific needs. In closing I want to say Major Medical insurance is great insurance. For performance horses traveling around I suggest it daily to clients. I just want equine insurance to be a smooth process and to get that done communication is the key. If I can help with any needs call me anytime! Thanks again! Jason

X2’s Big Ticket event in Tunica, Mississippi once again topped the charts. Always a great event, this year roping lived up and exceeded its standards as being not only a great roping, but a place
where ropers can enjoy the nightlife of Tunica, Mississippi. It truly is Vegas action – Southern style! Although ropers had the chance to enjoy the evenings at the many casinos in Tunica, the team roping action throughout the day stole the show. With close to $150,000 in cash up for grabs, as well as 10 Cactus trophy saddles, 42 super nice Maynard buckles and 24 American Hats awarded, the event attracted the attention of ropers from all across the country. Many, first-time Big Ticket ropers who traveled in from nearby states including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and of course those East of the big river commented that the roping was “one of the most fun events they have ever been to,” “the fellow ropers were the kindest they had met” and “the event had a tremendous staff and ran great.” The event witnessed a 200 team increase from last year and continues on its
steady rise as one of the largest ropings east of the Mississippi River. John Johnson gives all the credit of the success of the Big Ticket roping to his crew and a few others. “Man, I couldn’t do this without the great crew I have. From the office staff to the arena crew, hands down I think they are the best. Tunica is also a great place. It is fun. The ropers can rope all day and enjoy gambling at night. It is a great place and a great roping.” Of course it was about winning and the event produced plenty of them. Perhaps the biggest winner of the weekend was Will McCraw. He took home the win in both the #15 Big Money with Cole Curry and #13 Big Ticket roping with Lance Arviso. Other big winners included Mary Ann Brown and Derrick Davis who won the special fees #12 World Series event. Together they won $7,000!
The Priefert #12 Big Ticket win went home with Justin McMillion and Patrick Houchins while the Wrangler #11 Big Ticket average was taken away by the team of Randy Dehne and Ty Stroup. The Carroll Original Wear #10 Big Ticket roping was won by Dave Wingo and Justin McCright, while Tommy Thompson and John David Sanders were the champions of the Chaffehay #8 Cash Saddle roping. Thoughts of a Team Roping Spouse
Ego I
t’s called ego. Men are ate up with it. It is a major flaw with team ropers. It has to do with self-image and opinion of self. Team ropers define themselves as tough, capable, and they can do it all. They hate to admit failure and or being wrong. They may not admit it up front and out loud but they are always right. Duh! It’s a frame of mind. Roping can be frustrating. You think? I’ve been a casual, quiet observer in the practice pen long enough to see all kinds of reactions to roping gone wrong. Some blame it on the cattle. Some blame the horses. Some blame partners (though rarely) but very few blame themselves. They will admit to having a bad or off day. Strive as they might to get better and overcome they still have those moments of anger and frustration when things are going awry and falling apart. One particular instance took place recently when Boss and his partner were having a bad day. Neither of them could quite get it together. They didn’t really want to admit but things were just not working. From my point of view I thought they should just quit and start over again tomorrow with another and newer frame of mind. Heaven forbid, if I should offer advice. Ego! It’s a man thing. It’s also a roper thing. Regardless, what you called it this particular day was not coming together. As the pair rode back up the arena they were in a heavy discussion about the why’s and what for’s of the roping not coming together this particular afternoon. As they pulled up and talked in front of the heading box I made the slight indication that today just might not be a good day to rope. Perhaps, they were trying hard and the fun just wasn’t there. “Have you lost your mind, Gracie,” Boss countered. “We will get it together. We’ve got to work it out before the weekend.” I shrugged and figured they should just give it up and mark it off, for today at least. Some days are just better left alone. Besides walking away for a little while can work wonders. It tends 52 / APRIL • 2017 THE ROPING PEN
to change your perspective and frame of mind. It was fuel to the fire when June Bug came running up and said, “Mom, thinks we should postpone practice today. Are we going to keep roping?” Boss glared at me for voicing my opinions out loud. “We are roping” Boss said and got back on his horse. “We have to work out the bugs.” He rode into the heading box and Donald followed suite and took his position as the heeler. I opened the gate when Boss nodded and didn’t even watch the run. You cannot argue with expertise. When Boss missed he was mad. I just thought he was trying too hard to prove a point. There was no need. He rode back up the pen and Donald was giving him a lot of room. He threw his rope on the ground and slammed his fist against the saddle horn. Slamming one’s hand on the saddle horn always makes perfect sense. “I don’t know what is wrong with me,” he exclaimed. Donald offered some solace but had no advice. “It’s okay. It’s either your miss or mine. Maybe Gracie is right. Maybe we just need to walk away for a minute.” Boss glared at Donald. Donald shrugged and loosened the cinch on his saddle. “It’s like we have never done this before.” As the pair mulled over their inadequacies I smiled. “Let’s just quit for today,” I said with a smile. “Maybe you are both tired and trying too hard. Maybe tomorrow’s practice will be a better day for everyone.” “Have you lost your mind?” Boss shot back with vengeance. “You don’t understand!” “Of course, I don’t,” I thought. I’ve only been out here for two hours now watching two idiots on horses try to throw a clothesline on a runaway bovine. What is there to understand? Is it ego or is it just stupid? Is it ego that prevents a man from apologizing or is it just being stupid or hard headed? How does roping weigh so much on pride and good sense that a man cannot let go of his emotions for a minute and regroup? It is not quitting or giving up. It is just providing the opportunity for a
different outlook and frame of mind. “Let’s take a break,” Boss said. “Put it on a hold for a minute.” Boss and Donald headed to the house. “We are going to get something to drink and let the horses rest a minute.” I stood there with a dumb look on my face. Mmmm, my next question is, “Why is it a good idea when it is “HIS” idea but if it comes from me…well, how could I have even had such a thought? Ego? It’s no wonder men are from Mars or Venus or whatever the book says. I rolled my eyes and sat down a barrel. I watched Boss and Donald head to the house. Shortly, June Bug and Buzzy joined them. I took a deep breath. What was disturbing to me was in twenty or thirty minutes or however long it took both ropers would be back, calm and refreshed, and ready to rope. Different frame of mind, different perspective and everything would suddenly be lovely. In short, I had suggested they take a break. How could I have even come up with such an absurd idea? I’m glad ropers are smart. They have it all figured out. Heaven forbid, if I should offer any advice and suggestions. Who am I to even entertain an idea as to how they might or might not do things? They would be back to the arena in a bit and the world of team roping would be lovely again, back on track and everyone on the same page. I think ropers are egotistical. They may be arrogant and proud but they are always “right” and on track. If you don’t believe me just ask them. I’m so glad they have it all figured out.

SWEAT AND BALIN’ TWINE Ruts
O
ne thing I cannot tolerate is stagnation. I have family and acquaintances who are stuck in the same ruts they got into in high school. Life changes; we either change with it or stagnate. I can honestly say I’ve avoided those ruts. The passions I have today are all things I grew up without. As I have mentioned, I never got to play little league, middle, or high school sports. I got involved with my town’s little league baseball and softball through my kids, but they decided they like soccer now. I’m still involved with softball, and have a love for helping the young ones learn the game. I was not involved until my forties. By the same token, I did not get involved in team roping until my thirties. I won my first roping association saddle at thirty-three. Until kids and my own cattle operation took precedence, I was a rabid team roper, and
hope to get my children involved soon. Some of my good roping friends didn’t pick up a rope until their forties or later. Now, at almost forty-seven, I’ve started over again. Following the advice of a former teacher and good friend, I have started graduate school. She has encouraged me to get my Master’s and teach writing on the collegiate level. I bit the bullet and listened to Wifey telling me there will always be reasons to put it off if I choose to listen to them, but I needed to just do it now. One of the best examples of starting something new came to me from a friend. She had a friend who got pregnant in high school, married, and a baby at an early age. Two more children followed, one with muscular dystrophy. Kids in school, then college, a divorce, all a part of her life. After the kids were grown, she decided to follow her dream. She enrolled at LSU and took remedial classes to catch up. Her second year
BY JOHN B. RHUDY of college started in borrowed clothes and exhausted after flooding destroyed all of her belongings and she worked to clean up her home and those of other family members. In spite of all of the setbacks, this lady finally became a psychologist. That is a story about getting out of the ruts. Wifey is another great example of starting over. We had been married for a little while when budget cuts cost her her radiology tech job at the local hospital. She was torn, but I supported her in going back to school where she became a registered nurse, then got her BSN. I am very proud of her and the example she sets for our children. As I stated, I see too many stuck in ruts, routine, stagnant. They fear change or feel insecure starting over. It’s never too late for a new beginning. Don’t feel trapped. Yes, there will be sacrifices. There will be rough times. Never feel stuck. Make that change and get out of those ruts.
with Pastor Charles Powers
A
s I write this piece the temperatures here in Kentucky home have gone from a nice 70 degrees to a freezing 20. It was even warm enough this last month that I turned the soil over in the garden. The seasons seem to be getting more “confused” and blended every year. Despite this trend, the Bible has a lot to say about the changing of the seasons. Seasons of course don’t just apply to weather patterns, but also changes in our lives. Sometimes I am on top of the world and the next week it may seem I have traversed to the valley of the shadow of death. No matter where I am, no matter what season I am in, there is one thing that remains the same. That constant is God’s unending love for me! You can rest assured no matter where you are today, God is loving you the same as He did yesterday and will continue to love you the same tomorrow. Try to remember that no matter what life brings your way.
