HOURS OF OPERATION
ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION
In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS
The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is unique as a community centre. Not only
are we situated in a beautiful piece of Vancouver's history, but we are part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture. This means we serve not only the local community, but the city as a whole. There are a number of great events and programs to enjoy this coming season. From April 17-21 the Roundhouse documentation team showcases our 2015 performances and events with their third annual art exhibit. On May 22 we will be celebrating Engine 374’s 129th anniversary from noon to 3pm with a brass band, speeches, birthday cake, and more. Come see the train roll out to the turntable, watch it steam and hear the bell! And on June 15 come down to the Roundhouse’s Turntable for the Yaletown 3rd Annual Community BBQ from noon to 4pm with many local vendors. Watch as well for our revamped Picnic in the Park this summer. If you haven’t already visited the new Roundhouse history gallery in the upstairs mezzanine, please do stop by. This Mezzanine History Gallery includes 22 history panels created by historian John Atkin and four digital stories that until now were only accessible on our web site. Look for new programming in that area as well as we re-imagine some less-used spaces at the Roundhouse as a way to enhance our citizens’ experience of arts, culture, and heritage. I also want to thank our volunteers. Volunteers do everything from staffing our 400+ special events to teaching tai chi classes, blogging about our community engagement, running the Train Pavilion, and everything in between. Volunteering is a fun way to participate and set an example of constructive contribution to your community. If you or your friends are interested in volunteering, or even in joining our Board of Directors, please give us a call. Craig Giles President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society
VOLUNTEER AT THE ROUNDHOUSE Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees, and to various environmental and cultural events. Currently 207 volunteers give their time and energy to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. From special event to administrative volunteers, they all play an active role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not do the work we do without their support.
JOIN US! ARE YOU:
• Over the age of 14? • Comfortable engaging with a diverse group of people? • Interested in arts and culture? • Able to commit up to 6 months of volunteer service? • Able to work as part of a team? • Looking to be physically, socially, and mentally active? • Ready to have some fun?
WE HOPE TO MEET YOU SOON
If this describes you, then we want to hear from you. Visit www.roundhouse.ca and click on the Get Involved tab, then Volunteer Opportunities which outlines our volunteer openings in detail. Volunteer requirements are listed under How to Join our Volunteer Team. If you still have questions, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator or call 604-713-1857.

THE ROUNDHOUSE TURNTABLE PLAZA
Roundhouse arts programs: how do they work? If we can incorporate community, all ages, and make it collaborative, we're on the right track. Offer no judgement, meet new people, create conversation through a new experience. Trying things from a new angle—even upside down—helps. (Kids are really good at teaching adults about this.) Open Air Studio led by artist Ian Forbes. Photo by Riz Herbosa, 2013 (Doc Team). Shaking things up with recreation programming. Karma Yoga headed outside a few times during the last few summers. Connecting the body to the outdoors makes a refreshing change. Photo by Kim Law, 2013 (Doc Team).
