ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION
In September 1996, the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS
The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.
WHERE WE ARE
The Roundhouse is located at the corner of Davie St & Pacific Blvd • The Yaletown-Roundhouse Canada Line Station is 200 metres from us • Bus routes 6 & C23 stop within steps of the Roundhouse.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY Hello from the Roundhouse Society Board!
We’re ecstatic to welcome you back to the Roundhouse and the many exciting programs that our programmers have put together for this session. There are old favourites (woodworking, sports, and many more) and hopefully some new favourites as well. We missed you! The COVID-19 pandemic has hit all recreation and arts organizations hard, given the lengthy restrictions and limitations brought upon by the Provincial Health Officer. We know this has affected our community members – as the community connections that we create, maintain and develop in-person were abruptly severed. We wanted to thank you for hanging in there – and now considering registering for workshops or attending arts events. We also like our volunteers – they do everything from staffing the hundreds of special events, helping supporting teaching in classes, staffing the Engine 374 Pavilion, and many more. Volunteering is fun way to support the community and rebuild the connections after so many months of restricted activities. Investing in your community is a tenet of the Canadian society and the opportunity is yours for asking – if you have an interest, just get in touch with our volunteer coordinator: something is always cooking/dancing/singing/happening! The Roundhouse is co-managed by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Roundhouse Arts and Recreation Society. The Society is a volunteer-led community organization tasked with the important task of running the programs, managing finances and providing oversight to our staff. We are always looking for energetic, community-linked volunteers to join the Board – drop me a line at president@roundhouse.ca if you have an interest! Adrian Mitescu President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society
IN MEMORIAM DAISY CHIN
January 4, 1964 – March 18, 2021 Staff and Board were saddened to hear of the passing of Daisy Chin, former Supervisor at the Roundhouse (2012-2014). Daisy was with the Park Board for 37 years, rising through the ranks from Summer Day Camp Leader to Director of Recreation. A dedicated and passionate proponent of recreation for everyone, she was particularly noted for her honest and compassionate leadership qualities. She mentored countless Park Board staff, including many at the Roundhouse. The twinkle in her eye, her distinctive warm laugh and bright smile, her quiet dignity and gentle soul—she is sorely missed by her Roundhouse family. Rest in peace, Daisy.
WILLIAM MOYSEYRUBIN
February 7, 1964 – August 9, 2021 The indomitable William Moysey—composer, choreographer, sound designer, poet, theatre technician and performer extraordinaire—is gone. His Roundhouse family is heartbroken. It’s hard to imagine our lives without his brilliant mind, unique gifts, passion for life and, most of all, his expansive and generous heart. Bill was a dedicated theatre and live event technician at the Roundhouse for many years. He worked attentively and tirelessly with our production team and community members to produce wonderful and magical events. His greatest love was his children, and his greatest pride was in who they are becoming as beings in this big, beautiful world. There was never a father or husband who loved more deeply, shared more profoundly, or had a bigger heart. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, Bill.

RESIDENCIES
WHAT IS A ROUNDHOUSE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE?
Participate in a free Artists’ Residency and collaborate with professional artists on projects that build creative community. The Artists in Residence program is an important part of our commitment to community cultural development: promoting diversity, interdisciplinary activity, innovation, collaboration and involvement. This is your opportunity to create original theatre, dance, music, and visual art with some of Vancouver’s most renowned artists.
VISUAL ARTS
Artist Residency, Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐏᐢᑵᐤ Arseneau
Nehiyaw (Cree) Métis visual artist Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐏᐢᑵᐤ Arseneau has worked hard to re-gather, practice, and foster traditional skills… and she wants to share. Her Plant a Seed Bead Residency offers a unique opportunity to learn beading directly from the artist and, in turn, to share this knowledge with your own circle. Receiving a package with beading materials by mail, then meet online with the artist, one-on-one. With her guidance, you will create a beaded patch, as she shares her stories and invites you to share yours. In exchange for this lesson and connection, each participant pledges to share the skill and conversation with two others who also receive materials packets by mail. They each share with two more, supported by additional materials. How long can we keep this skill-sharing project going? How far might this teaching travel? Adele ᒪᐢᑿᓱᐏᐢᑵᐤ embarks upon this project with a firm belief that we are all simultaneously teachers and learners, and that we can choose to honour and cultivate these roles in our own lives. Due to the intimate nature of this residency, space is very limited. To read more or to enter for the chance to participate, visit roundhouse.ca/programs/artists-residencies/plant-a-seed
DANCE
Community-engaged dance residencies at Vancouver Park Board facilities bring together people of all ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds to explore, create, and perform dance with professional dance artists. This winter, we welcome back the Roundhouse Ageless Dancers, Roundhouse Community Dancers, as well as residencies for both adults and youth through All Bodies Dance Project. See page 33, 43, 52.
MAKE ART IN OUR PARKS
Visit over 50 artists making art in Vancouver Park Board’s Fieldhouse Studios – transformed former care-takers’ suites in parks or underused facilities across Vancouver into active spaces for community engaged creative practices. In each cycle, artist collectives, food, greening and environmental groups are given free access to these spaces in exchange for engaging neighbours, colleagues and curious visitors in imaginative, collaborative work. These inspiring projects lead communities into deeper conversations about living in the urban environment. Find out more about all 22 Fieldhouse Programs across the Vancouver Park Board at vancouver.ca/fieldhouse-programs.
CLIMATE CHANGE ARTS RESIDENCY WITH YOUTH
Re-storying Our Futures This residency invites youth to take back the narrative of climate change through multi-media storytelling. The climate crisis is happening here and now. This is an especially critical issue for young people, for whom climate anxiety is the norm—a whole generation who rightly fears for their future. And there are so few stories about climate change, that this frontier is up to them. Winter and Spring 2022 youth will explore fiction scriptwriting to tell their stories in preparation for a 48-hour film production challenge. Guided by a team of writers and filmmakers invested in the idea that we need new stories to help us navigate the uncertainty and chaos of the climate crisis. To give us the courage to act. For information on activities, and how to participate, check roundhouse.ca or contact db.boyko@ vancouver.ca. See pages 12, 43.

BALLOONS THAT FLAME POETRY EXHIBITION Throughout Winter and Spring 2021, the Flaming Balloon youth collective of truth seeking, audacious poets and musicians nurtured their craft online under the direction of poet-in-residence, Angelic Goldsky. To celebrate their brave work, and in true pandemic fashion, an exhibition was held—online. The next few pages, and the back cover of the guide, presents just a few of their pieces. Come home, says my body. by Meghan Romano I like you very much, my body says. Yes, I like you very much, When you’re changing your shirt for the evening, trying on the bikini you bought last year, those three seconds before I do the shower, I’m there, and like you very much, my body says. You should see the gears inside those my body ankles that keep grinding, says. They can get you up a mountain in three hours flat. Not without these thighs, my body smiles. These babies are strung up like a harp inside those legs. Every fiber tuned to the music of your heart beating, surrendered to the wave of your blood moving. And they enjoy it too, my body laughs. No mountain is painful. forever. Take your lungs, for example, my body points. The way they heave for breath, the stitches you get around your rib cage, like it was made too small. Hurts, doesn’t it? Without the heaving and the creeks of sweat on your forehead that go up in your hair, quads being strung, without and ankles in the gravel, le, sib pos m i be uld wo n i ta un mo the my body winks. So would swimming across Jade Bay on summer vacation, So would biking across Okanagan desert. So would waking up and placing one foot on the gas before school. Where would your breath go, she asks, if it were not in these lungs? Where would you be if not here? My body asks, Come home. I really placing a hand on its/my chest. Do like you.
If Our Forever Were Different After Keira Vanderkolk By Mohini Takhar If our forever was different there would be bubble-gum skies above us fingers intertwined glances toward each other we’d never want to let go. Instead, our forever became slow, once-in-a-while hello’s static conversations where the radio dial was never turned all the way around so all you heard was white noise right before it turned off right before you gave up no gentle goodbyes just forever maybes. A thousand chances sit in the middle of the palms that we never held onto one of us too afraid perhaps the other too bold and perhaps we’ll never know
Untouched chances slowly slipped away to say this cant remain the same forever always one sided it felt too one sided like there was always something missing. this was never something I signed up for nor did I ever want it I just didn’t know it until I got here. if our forever were different fireworks would dance in the sky at midnight paint it in neon colors like we are in an alternate galaxy a universe far, far away we would look up at the same time in awe fingers intertwined I’d lean on your shoulder let you be my safe space a hollow tree to always come back to. They say pieces of a puzzle should effortlessly fit together but the pieces of us do not maybe we never tried hard enough then again, we shouldn’t have to in the first place.
We could have infinite possibilities together fingers intertwined, glances toward each other. we’d never want to let go.

You know. I find myself in pain so often it lacks meaning Things that once shattered me. A dull ache Sometimes I forget if my heart beats You tell me I absorb emotion too easily The reality is what is a stone to do I exist to clean the messes of others I dream of days where I will disappear from the lives of those who hurt me without feeling guilty I dream of days when this will feel like a dream Pain washes over me like a warm blanket now It reminds me I was right not to trust, right not to share What silences me protects me Maybe it is strange to be so codependent Intertwined with my melancholy We walk hand in hand Drink wine together Remiss in the nostalgia of past wounds She says she is the only one who will be there for me Some days I believe her Most days I am just thankful for a blanket in the cold.

I try to find myself spiritually. I was raised to recognize God’s voice in the breeze. But I can’t seem to hear his advice now.
I am pushed down by expectations, my obligations and a complete lack of satisfaction. I’m beat down and told to stay there. But I won’t. Because I don’t want to stay low.
Instead I pray to something, I’m not quite sure. I launch my words out into the universe. I pull myself from these treacherous thoughts.
I won’t settle down. I won’t be peaceful. I will not settle for a society that cripples the very people who form it.

The world feels heavy Yet I want to create light. I’m sick of fighting, Of biting my lip.
Finding My Place
Finding My Place
Warm Blanket By Majin Buu
I was told to dream But those who marked my worth with a dollar sign Kept me from crossing the line Over and beyond this current realm To where my heart can truly Create purposefully.
So I’m on my way Picking up my favourite fragments of myself Pulling the dusty books off the shelf To revisit their nurturing pages.
So I search for the gods and the goddesses The ones who will actually love, The ones who will help me. I set my intention Launch out into the spaces around me.
I will listen, I will learn, In community I will burn With passion for collaboration. I’ll create something beautiful Out of the strife. I will show those who create fear What better could be like.

I will take up space. Do not tell me to quiet down. I have worth to share. Upon my mind and my body This pain I bear. This is my fuel.
