HOURS OF OPERATION
ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION
In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS
The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is unique. Situated in a beautiful piece of
Vancouver's history, we are also part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture, serving both the local community and the city as a whole. The Roundhouse is also proud to be a leader in the field of community-engaged arts. Our arts programmers recently co-authored and published Leading from Beside: Community Engaged Dance in Recreation, a research paper that inspired the exhibition and national symposium we’re hosting this fall. This event celebrates community-engaged dance across the city, bringing together artists, community participants, recreation programmers, Langara College students and colleagues for panel discussions, movement workshops and dialogue circles. Like so many projects at the Roundhouse, Leading from Beside is a partnership endeavour, made possible by the Roundhouse Community Centre Association, Langara College, Made in BC: Dance on Tour and the Vancouver Park Board. Bluebird North, an intimate musical showcase, is celebrating its 100th show at the Roundhouse on September 13. Beerlesque, Roundhouse’s annual FUNdraiser, is back on October 22, bringing together craft beers and fabulously talented burlesque dancers. Don’t miss out, tickets go fast! The ever popular Breakfast with Santa and horse-drawn carriage rides are returning to the Roundhouse on December 10 and 11. Finally, I want to thank our volunteers. Volunteers do everything from staffing our 400+ special events to teaching Tai Chi classes, to photography, to running the Engine 374 Pavilion, and everything in between. Volunteering is a fun way to participate and set an example of constructive contribution. Investing in your community is a tenet of Canadian society, and the opportunity is yours for the asking. If you’re interested, contact the Roundhouse volunteer coordinator. As well, the Roundhouse is always looking for energetic people to join our board of directors. VOLUNTEER AT THE ROUNDHOUSE Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees, and to various environmental and cultural events. Currently, 218 volunteers give their time and energy to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. From special event to administrative volunteers, they all play an active role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not do the work we do without their support.
JOIN US! ARE YOU:
• Over the age of 14? • Comfortable engaging with a diverse group of people? • Interested in arts and culture? • Able to commit up to 6 months of volunteer service? • Able to work as part of a team? • Looking to be physically, socially, and mentally active? • Ready to have some fun?
WE HOPE TO MEET YOU SOON

Tips on searching for recreational activities online
Using the correct search filters will help you have a faster and easier experience when searching for a recreational activity through the Park Board’s online registration system.
What types of filters can you use? Customers have the option to filter activities by community centre, area of the city, time of the activity, type of activity and age category. This will reduce the number of activities displayed to the ones that fit your specific criteria.
How can you save those filter options so you don’t have to set it up each time?
What is the “Sort By” function? The “Sort By” function is located on the right side of the tool bar that includes the search option, and changes the order of the activities displayed. For example, if “Enrolled”’ is selected from this list, activities with the least number of enrollments will be displayed first.
Share your feedback with us We are interested in hearing what you think of the Park Board’s registration and reservation system. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts at recreation.vancouver.ca. All Vancouver Park Board community centres, rinks and pools are now using the new system. For more information, visit recreation.vancouver.ca
If you are using Internet Explorer, subscribing to the RSS feed feature will allow you to be notified of any updates on the activity list. After subscribing, find a link to the feed under the Favourites section in Internet Explorer.

ANNOUNCING ARTIST IN COMMUNITIES: ANTHONY SHRAG We are delighted to announce that Anthony Schrag is the successful candidate for the Artist in Communities program. Anthony is a Scotland-based participatory artist who describes his work this way: “All of my work is collaborative, in the sense that it exists for other people and not just me. Also, when I work with people I approach those people as co-collaborators. They are not my materials, but shared workers in an exploration. I may have the initial idea, but it can only develop in partnership with other people. Expect to see Anthony in the Roundhouse lobby, on the Turntable, in the park, and maybe even behind the front desk, where he will ask us to consider, How do we play?
SPECIAL EVENTS
HOW DO WE PLAY
How Do We Play? is a community-based project featuring a blend of art and sport based in the Roundhouse in 2017. Including invented games, exciting competitions and physical activities for all ages (and we really do mean all ages), this curious project encourages people to explore their place within the world. Plans are being made. Goals are being decided. Games are being designed. Are you going to play?

MAY 13, 2017
SAVE THE DATE Sun May 13, 2017 In 1997, the world population was closing in on six billion people, Dolly the cloned sheep was born in Scotland, and Titanic stormed onto the silver screen. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre quietly opened its doors to the public on May 3. We haven't looked back. Post-industrial and post-Expo, Yaletown was just beginning to take shape. We opened with 45 classes and now we offer over 200. To mark the day, the Roundhouse will be hosting the Roundhouse 20th Anniversary Celebration in 2017. Join us for a full day of free family activities, special performances and concerts, art-making workshops, drop-in fitness and dance classes, and so much more. It's been a wonderful 20 years growing with the neighbourhood and we hope you will celebrate with us. Look for a complete list of activities in the Winter 2016 guide, out at the beginning of December. Scan of the first program guide from May, 1997.

THE ROUNDHOUSE HERITAGE GALLERY Have you been upstairs in the Roundhouse in the last little while? You might have noticed the expansive blue wall with dates, displays, and a video playing short movies. Welcome to the Roundhouse Heritage Gallery. In early 2016, arts programmer Cyndy Chwelos worked with a small team of Roundhouse staff to move the history panels that were displayed in the Great Hall to the under-utilized mezzanine space upstairs. Reprinted onto durable plastic panelling, they now hang along a timeline, starting in the 1880s and working their way along the wall to the 2000s. Travel through the decades and learn how sawmills and log booms became part of the industrial landscape, women took over jobs during WWII, and how the Roundhouse very nearly never existed. As well, take a moment to sit and watch the Roundhouse Story Project. These videos were commissioned by the Roundhouse Society and focus on different people and times at the Roundhouse. Hard to Believe chronicles Jim Riddell's move from being a worker at the rail yard to a user of the community centre. Working on the Railway follows Howie Biehl on his summer job as pantry boy on a CPR Rockies tour train. The Roundhouse was dramatically saved from the wrecking ball as told in A New Lease on Life. And, finally, Transformation looks at the journey from a post-Expo 86 vista to it's current state as community arts and recreation centre. As the oldest building still on its original site, the Roundhouse is an important part of Vancouver's history. We hope you'll take a few minutes one day to visit the Roundhouse Heritage Gallery.

This year we celebrate our food traditions and what they tell us about home.
SUSTENANCE FESTIVAL 2016 NOT JUST ANOTHER FOOD METAPHOR
INFO www.sustenancefestival.ca for stories and information about Sustenance events. Every fall, many of us celebrate the season cycle and harvest, each with its unique food offerings rooted in tradition. Giving thanks, drying or preserving for winter, moon-gazing with mid-Autumn Moon cakes, or sharing stuffed squash in a traditional Jewish sukkah. In each case, family and community are at the heart of the feast to recognize the good fortune of the bounty. This year's theme will focus on our food traditions, and the stories they might tell about home, land and migration and all the happiness or tension it brings. This seems particularly relevant this year, with our city's residents finding new ways to listen to the present and past experience of our indigenous First Peoples, welcome refugees, defending rights for undocumented and migrant workers, and coping with natural and human-caused disasters that force sudden changes in what we rely on for holistic sustenance.

For guaranteed seating visit www.newworks.ca INFO www.newworks.ca In The Gates of Hell, project20 performs a new original work about discovering the beauty, peace, stillness, and love of one's self despite the distractions of the world around us. The work asks simple questions. Who are we? Where are we going to or from? What is our purpose? Under the direction of dancer and choreographer Donald Sales, project20 is a platform for dancers to speak their truths. Only who is left, by Lesley Telford, explores those daily efforts that turn into heroic feats. How are strength and power used to hide one's vulnerable side? When is the fight pointless? As Bertrand Russell said, “War does not determine who is right, only who is left.” Lesley Telford is a Vancouverbased choreographer and teacher who has danced with and choreographed for dance companies across Canada and internationally.
