HOURS OF OPERATION

ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION

In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT

All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS

The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION

The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY The Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre is one of the most active and influential

community centres in British Columbia. Hosting more than 400 events each year and offering innumerable artistic, educational, social, and recreational programs, the Roundhouse is more than just a downtown hub. Positioned in a beautiful and historic area in Vancouver, we are home to CPR Engine 374, which on its first arrival marked the completion of the transnational Canadian railroad. Today, more than a century later, we are still connecting citizens with the country and the world. In 2017, the Roundhouse will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a community centre. We have been privileged to host wonderful programs: from diplomatic gatherings of international significance to childrens' lunch-hour chess classes, from an annual city-wide Diwali celebration to classes in our pottery studio. On any given day you can drop in to the Roundhouse and see the results of 20 years of growth, community building, and celebration. We hope you will join us to mark our birthday over the coming year. None of our successes would be possible without the hard work of the Roundhouse's staff and volunteers, and without the strong partnership between Vancouver Park Board and the Roundhouse Society. Park Board and Society staff and volunteers are the true heart of the Roundhouse, and we are deeply indebted to them for their time and energy. Next time you are at the Roundhouse, take a moment to thank the staff and volunteers for their dedication and hard work. They have earned it. We look forward to celebrating our 20th birthday with you in 2017! Best regards, Andrew Dilts President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

VOLUNTEER AT THE ROUNDHOUSE Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our community. Without the hours of volunteer service by our community members, we could not do the work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees, and to various environmental and cultural events. Currently, 218 volunteers—as varied as the programs we offer—give their time and energy to the Roundhouse. From special-event to administrative volunteers, they all play a vital role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not thrive without their support.

ANNOUNCING ARTIST IN COMMUNITIES: ANTHONY SHRAG We are delighted to announce that Anthony Schrag is the successful candidate for the Artist in Communities program. Anthony is a Scotland-based participatory artist who describes his work this way: “All of my work is collaborative, in the sense that it exists for other people and not just me. Also, when I work with people I approach those people as co-collaborators. They are not my materials, but shared workers in an exploration. I may have the initial idea, but it can only develop in partnership with other people. Expect to see Anthony in the Roundhouse lobby, on the Turntable, in the park, and maybe even behind the front desk, where he will ask us to consider, How do we play?

ROUNDHOUSE 20TH ANNIVERSARY

MAY 13

SAVE THE DATE Sun May 13 In 1997, the world population was closing in on six billion people, Dolly the cloned sheep was born in Scotland, and Titanic stormed onto the silver screen. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre quietly opened its doors to the public on May 3. We haven't looked back. Post-industrial and post-Expo, Yaletown was just beginning to take shape. We opened with 45 classes and now we offer over 200. To mark the day, the Roundhouse will be hosting the Roundhouse 20th Anniversary Celebration in 2017. Join us for a full day of free family activities, special performances and concerts, art-making workshops, drop-in fitness and dance classes, and so much more. It's been a wonderful 20 years growing with the neighbourhood and we hope you will celebrate with us. Look for a complete list of activities in the Spring Summer 2017 program guide.

On May 7-10, 1997, the Karen Jamieson Dance Company ended their cross-Canada tour of Stone Soup at the Roundhouse. "The evening will feature indigenous singers, dancers and performers from this area and a new creation by Karen Jamieson based on the Stone Soup legend, a story that has resonance in all cultures." Including invented games, exciting competitions, and physical activities for all ages (and we really do mean all ages), this curious project encourages people to explore their place within the world. Plans are being made. Goals are being decided. Games are being designed. Are you going to play? Creator Anthony Shrag is a Scotland-based, participatory artist who describes his work this way: “All of my work is collaborative, in the sense that it exists for other people and not just me. Also, when I work with people I approach those people as co-collaborators. They are not my materials, but shared workers in an exploration. I may have the initial idea, but it can only develop in partnership with other people.” Expect to see Anthony in the Roundhouse lobby, on the Turntable, in the park, and maybe even behind the front desk, where he will ask us to consider, How do we play?

GOOSEFEATHER: ARTIST TALK

FEB 21

A Roundhouse residency Tue Feb 21, 7pm Café Lobby Naomi Steinberg is an accomplished performer, storyteller, and installation artist. With over 14 years experience she knows how to seduce her audiences through a provocative mix of political thought and artistic content. Curious about space-time and measurement, Naomi went around the planet by land and sea, carrying the story of Goosefeather for her latest project. Early one November 2014 morning, she left her Vancouver home for California where she caught a cargo ship that took her 21 days across the Pacific Ocean to Australia. A hop-skip-jump-bumpeditybump then brought her through China, Japan, Russia, Norway, the UK, Belgium, France, and Switzerland with plenty of performances, workshops, and creative collaboration along the way. Finally, she crossed the Atlantic from Southampton to New York, arriving back on Turtle Island one perfect autumn day in November 2015. Naomi will give an artist talk about Goosefeather and her journey around the world. Please come with your questions and your adventurous spirit! For information www.roundhouse.ca 604.713.1800 ext 1
