ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY Following its 20th birthday in 2017, the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre
remains one of the most active community centres in British Columbia. The Centre will host more than 400 programs and events this year, featuring the arts, education, social engagement, and recreation. The Roundhouse is more than just a downtown hub: it is an oasis connecting Vancouver as a whole. The Roundhouse Society is pleased to have accomplished two major goals in recent months. In Ocotber 2017, we completed the installation of 200 new retractable seats in the Performance Centre, thanks largely to support from the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and the City of Vancouver. Shortly thereafter, the Roundhouse Society signed a renewed Joint Operating Agreement with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, charting the course for our relationship with the Park Board for the next 10 years and beyond. In this time of reflection and action around Truth and Reconciliation, the Roundhouse and Vancouver Park Board are partnering on a project with local indigenous artists to set the railway history narrative of the Roundhouse in a larger context of place. We are pleased to welcome Debra Sparrow (Musqueam), Xuuyaah (Squamish/Haida), and Jordan Gallie (Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish) and their work to the Roundhouse. Enjoy a number of our in-house special events throughout the summer including Engine 374 Anniversary celebration on May 20 and the Roundhouse Fun Fair on August 19. We owe so much of our success to the volunteers who dedicate their time to be with us. We're always looking for passionate volunteers to join our team, contact the volunteer coordinator to get involved. A few highlights from our upcoming season include: • May 9: Move for Health Day, a city–and world-wide–initiative promoting physical activity • Jun 16-27: Queer Arts Festival "DECADEnce" • Aug 19-26: the first annual Vancouver International Bird Festival We look forward to an exciting and fulfilling 2018 with each of you! Andrew Dilts President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

FRAMING HISTORY: INDIGENOUS ART AT THE ROUNDHOUSE
Treasures of Identity, photograph, by Silmara Emde.
A project with artists Debra Sparrow, Xuuyaah, and Jordan Gallie, curated by Kamala Todd Three artists from Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations have created work that reflects their long-standing continuity and deep relationship with these lands, including the resource-rich, culturally-significant waterfront area where the Roundhouse stands. Debra Sparrow is a Musqueam weaver and artist who was instrumental in reviving Coast Salish weaving in this area. She innovates with many materials and designs, always staying true to the forms and stories of her Coast Salish culture. Xuuyaah is a Squamish/Haida artist who is also connected to Musqueam by lineage. He has a long history as a carver and artist deeply connected to his cultural practice. Jordan Gallie of Tsleil-Waututh Nation, also Squamish by lineage, is a young artist who works in a wide range of materials. Their work will be installed at the Roundhouse in Spring 2018 followed by an opening celebration. Visit our website for updates on the project: www.roundhouse.ca
