ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION
n September 1996, the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving Roundhouse Community project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports. THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY The Roundhouse was buzzing this fall. We added a before-school care program for students of our
neighbouring Elsie Roy Elementary school, and were pleased to welcome new staff members Sally Chan and Jenny Yu joining as our Community Youth Worker and interim Recreation Programmer, respectively. With fall behind us, we look forward to a restful holiday season before gearing up for a full roster of existing new partnerships, programs, and events to come. Winter welcomes the return of our annual festival partnerships. Please join us for inquiring and risk-taking performances: • PuSh International Performing Arts Festival brings powerful programming to the community, such the Race Cards exhibition by UK-based artist Selina Thompson, which will see the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall filled with 1,000 index cards containing race-themed questions. We invite you to join the conversation and answer one (or more) of them. • In February, the Talking Stick Festival welcomes visiting and local Indigenous artists to Coast Salish territory with 12 full days of exhibition and performance, including an all-day Celebration of Powwow Culture. • Vancouver International Dance Festival will present Trust, a new 10 Gates Dancing duet by choreographer/performer Tedd Robinson and composer/performer Charles Quevillon, who use trust as a base point for creative examination. This resonant encounter in the Roundhouse Performance Centre will invite the curious to trust the curious. With these thought-provoking performances in mind, our warmest thanks again to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers for their continued hard work in making these events possible, and to outgoing Directors Aleya Bhaloo, Trevor Brady, Blake Chersinoff, Gillian Crouch, and Steve Jones for their service on the Board. We hope to see each of you soon for what will inevitably prove to be another rich and fulfilling season! Andrew Dilts President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

MAKE ART IN OUR PARKS
Visit over 50 artists making art in Vancouver Park Board’s Fieldhouse Studios – transforming former care-takers’ suites in parks or underused facilities across Vancouver into active spaces for community-engaged creative practices. In each cycle, artist collectives, food, greening, and environmental groups are given free access to these spaces in exchange for engaging neighbours, colleagues, and curious visitors in imaginative, collaborative work. These inspiring projects lead communities into deeper conversations about living in the urban environment. IN TRIBUTE: RALPH MCKNIGHT November 7, 1946 - September 25, 2018
Ralph emceeing the Roundhouse 20th Anniversary Celebration, May 13, 2017. Photo by Peter Classen.
It is with tremendous sorrow that the Roundhouse said goodbye to Ralph McKnight, an invaluable member of our community, who died tragically in a motorcycle accident in late September 2018. As an active contributor to the Roundhouse Society for over twenty years, Ralph leaves an indelible impression with his warm-hearted, loving, and passionate presence. Ralph’s participation with the Roundhouse Society began in 1994, as a member of the Roundhouse Advisory Committee to the Vancouver Park Board. In conjunction with renovations to the building, the Park Board administration assembled the Roundhouse Planning and Advisory Committee—a team of staff, a Park Board Commissioner, and community members—to develop a vision, mission and mandate for the newly formed space. Ralph was a natural fit for the team, given his previous contributions to, and leadership at, the West End Community Centre. In 1997, the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre officially launched with an ambitious mandate, with Ralph as a founding Board Director. As President from 1999-2002, Ralph worked tirelessly to ensure the implementation and growth of this unique mandate, and organized inventive events to bring the Board and staff together, including summer picnics, croquet tournaments, and winter Christmas light boat tours through False Creek. After eight years on the Board, supporting special events such as the Roundhouse 10th Anniversary, Ralph joined the Roundhouse Society Advisory Council in 2005 as a lively, generous participant. He continued to work with the Facilities committee, providing valuable background as they began the in-depth process to revitalize the Roundhouse Turntable Plaza, and continued to offer invaluable insight to the committee following the project’s completion. In addition to being an enthusiastic and dedicated champion of the Roundhouse, Ralph was one of the kindest people you could meet. In 2017, he generously emceed the Roundhouse’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, a job that kept him at the microphone over a period of six hours, romping through the history of arts and culture at the Roundhouse while introducing artists and performers who have been with us for the past 20 years. He personally spoke with each of them to work out how to pronounce their names and find out what their connection was to the Roundhouse, even while having prepared text. Ralph was a rudder for the Roundhouse Society—always enthusiastic about new and creative ideas. In speaking with Ralph, it was evident that his enthusiasm and passion extended to a variety of interests involving community and sport. He connected with people in a way that encouraged involvement and energetic discussion. At the Roundhouse, we can find some solace in the knowledge that Ralph’s presence is embedded deep within the Centre, and won’t soon be forgotten. With contributions from Ingrid Alderson, Gerry Thorne, Joslin Kobylka, Elizabeth Snow, Leslie Adams, and Marie Lopes.

With its roots in prayer, bharata natyam is performed in temples by devadasis or servants of god. The name bharata is an acronym: bha, bhava for emotion; ta, tala for rhythm; and ra, raga for melody. Natya means dance or drama, given that in all Indian classical dance forms, a dancer must be an equally proficient actor. Acknowledgments: Edmonton Arts Council, Mandala Arts & Culture Society
