ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY It is hard to believe in the height of summer that temperatures will soon cool and children will
return to school with the arrival of fall. We are looking forward to connecting with the Roundhouse community once more this fall with our annual special events including the Halloween Carnival (October 31), Breakfast with Santa (December 8), and the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival (December 21). We invite you to join us for the Roundhouse’s Community Celebration and Annual General Meeting on November 13, 2019. The night is free for all attendees, and will include artistic performances, refreshments, and an opportunity to learn more about the Roundhouse, celebrate our accomplishments, and have a voice as valued members of our community. Visit roundhouse.ca leading up to the date for full details and registration. Fall also brings a change in leadership at the Roundhouse. Our former Supervisor Peter Fox has moved on to another portfolio with the Vancouver Park Board, and Recreation Programmer Val Ferrar has graciously stepped in as our Acting Supervisor until a permanent fill for the role is found. On behalf of the Roundhouse board of directors, I would like to thank Peter for his dedication to and support of the Roundhouse and the Society, to Val for stepping up to the plate to ensure the Roundhouse continues to function smoothly in transition, and as always to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers for their hard work. As usual, our Arts Programmers have been hard at work coordinating innovative performances and installations at the Roundhouse. We encourage you to visit Frequencies, a collaborative kinetic sound sculpture project that will be developed at the Roundhouse. As part of the project, artist George Rahi invites members of the public to the Roundhouse to explore the sonic roles of bells in civic life. EVENTS SEP
EXHIBITION AND COMMUNITY ACTIVATIONS
Wed Sep 18 – Sat Sep 28 Exhibition Hall
OPENING RECEPTION
Thu Sep 19, 5-7pm INFO sustenancefestival.ca “Food will be what brings the people together” - Secwépemc Elder William Jones ‘Wolverine’ Ignace In this exhibit, guest curator Dawn Morrison of Wild Salmon Caravan draws upon a community of practice in the arts embedding Indigenous perspectives of regeneration, sustenance, and life spirit. A regenerative practice moves away from linear, production-oriented thinking and shifts towards holistic perspectives. It is a life-giving paradigm to regenerate society, reflect on daily lives, and offer time to work and heal in different ways. “The life cycle of wild salmon provides a powerful metaphor for a regeneration of life spirit,” says Morrison. “The relationship between wild salmon and Indigenous people is interlinked as a keystone species for biodiversity and cultural heritage. With loss of cultural diversity, we lose biodiversity. A regenerative paradigm underlines our Indigenous worldviews. Human creativity is critically important to address environmental and social crises in the world we live in today.” Inspired by ideas of regeneration, this exhibition explores a selection of community-engaged arts to push the boundaries between art, culture, food, and life spirit. Feasting for Change is part of the annual exhibition State of the Practice that highlights Vancouver Park Board’s longstanding commitment to artists working in community to engage citizens in creative practices.

EXHIBITION
Nov 1-30 TICKETS Free Roundhouse Great Hall This residency begins from an interest in Vancouver’s soundscape and the everyday repetition of certain acoustic events. While the 9 o'clock cannon and the noon hour ‘O Canada’ horn punctuate this soundscape as markers of time, symbolically reinforcing Canadian industrial providence, what would characterize a new instrument or sonic signal in the public realm if one were given the chance to compose it? Artist in residence George Rahi looks at the functions and the potentials of public sounds, drawing inspiration from the historical role of bells in church towers. Their sounds could be used not only to mark time and religious events, but function to also signal fluctuating circumstances of urban life like approaching storms and other threats. What could a new series of bell-like instruments in Vancouver function for, if not solely to mark time? What types of symbolic or ritual meanings could it hold today? During the residency, Rahi will develop a platform for people to craft their own bell-like sounds via a series of soundwalks, workshops, and sound installations open to the public. Participants will then be able to schedule their sounds at specific days and times to ring out across the community centre.

PERFORMANCE
Sun Oct 20, 2pm Performance Centre TICKETS Pay what you can at the door (suggested $20 adults; $5 children under 12). For guaranteed seating and workshop registration visit eventbrite.ca INFO newworks.ca Third Space is a trio between dancers, a stilt-walker and designed objects, exploring the concept of liminality. It brings together a series of oppositions (stilts/dance, pop/experimental music, soft/hard objects, French/Farsi/Swedish native tongues etc.) and attempts to discover what gets revealed in the in-between. What lives in the gap between stimulus and response? What gets lost in translation? How do we meet? Negotiating binary oppositions and allowing for multiple levels of identification, this work explores the concept of hybridity through intimate connections between performers, objects and audience members.

ART AFTER: RECONCILING ART AND MOTHERHOOD NOV–DEC DENISE GASSER
Nov-Dec WINDOW Gallery TICKETS Free INFO denisegasser.com This series acknowledges the tension that exists between the roles of artist and mother. Bridging the gap between creative aspirations and physical reality, artist Denise Gasser embraces the interruptions that typically hinder the creative process. These small artworks, in their varying levels of success and completion, come together as a rich tapestry to represent not only the struggle, but also the beauty and triumph she experiences as she continues to make art in motherhood. This work calls into question the limitations often placed on women after childbirth, and the notion that artists must choose between art and childrearing. DENISE GASSER is a mixed media artist, born and raised near the mountains of Utah. After receiving her BFA in Art Education, she lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, before moving to Vancouver. Denise shares her home studio with her architect husband and their four young, and very busy, sons. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and the U.S., and is collected internationally. Last year, the evening included performances by our children's capoeira class, the artist residency run Sound & Song Roundhouse Choir, and Kokoro Dance, a professional butoh dance company and producers of the Vancouver International Dance Festival based at the Roundhouse. Afterwards, audience members told us how much they enjoyed the performances and the chance to connect socially with other community members. Join us this year to see who we'll showcase!
